here we are with another issue of Night&Day Magazine Winter Edition. For the third consecutive year we are here in Miami during the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival to inform you about the previews of Ibiza and Formentera 2012. We will be at the Congress Hotel South Beach from March 15 to 25, where we will be with House Ibiza, a meeting point chosen by our friends from Ibiza where you can have fun at the pool parties and events while looking at the ocean. A complete program with our partners from Ibiza Global Radio, Welcome to Ibiza. On the cover of this issue you will find the talented Nina Kraviz, who will present her first CD, and Ritchie Hawtin who, after his successful Plastikman tour (his show at Amnesia in Ibiza was so incredible that we encored in Turin), will introduce our special about Berlin by interviewing the most important characters from the music scene in this city, from the creators of Tresor, the first techno club, to the legendary Watergate. Be careful because over the next few months we will be on tour at the best clubs to present this special issue and the Night&Day compilation.

aquí estamos de nuevo con la edición de invierno de Night&Day. Por tercer año consecutivo estamos aquí, en Miami, en la Winter Music Conference y el Ultra Music Festival, para informaros sobre los avances de la temporada 2012 en Ibiza y Formentera. Nos vemos en el Congress Hotel South Beach del 15 al 25 de marzo, donde estaremos con Casa Ibiza, un punto de encuentro pensado por nuestros amigos ibicencos donde podréis divertiros en las fiestas en la piscina y en los eventos mientras contempláis el océano. Un programa completo con nuestros socios en Ibiza Global Radio, Welcome to Ibiza. En la portada de esta edición tenemos a un gran talento, Nina Kraviz, que presentará su primer disco, y a Ritchie Hawtin que, después de su exitosa gira de Plastikman (tan increíble que, después de ver su espectáculo en el Amnesia de Ibiza, repetimos en Turín), presentará el especial de Berlín con entrevistas a los personajes más importantes de la escena musical en esta ciudad, desde los creadores del Tresor, el primer club de techno, hasta el legendario Watergate. Where are you originally from? I was born and grew up in the town of Irkutsk, the capital of Eastern Siberia, Russia. When and how did you start DJing? I just couldn’t stand not being involved anymore. I wanted to share my own understanding of “the way it should sound”. In about 2003 I started playing Italian soundtracks, blacksplotation and 70s underground disco in a café. At the same time I started buying techno records. Then I started playing in dance clubs from time to time. Soon after, I went to Australia to attend a red bull music academy session in 2006... all that changed me a lot as a person... I began feeling more confident about myself.. and 2 years later I became a resident at the best house club in Russia, Propaganda club. What do you enjoy the most ab bout DJing? The interactive part. I love sharing music with people. It’s always a little battle though: you need to get them interested, their appreciation. If you manage to do - it feels like the best thing in the world. Tell us about your first LP release, how would you define it and what was the engine? This is a little story. My story. When you listen to it you will get to know me a little better, because the engine was my personal emotional experience. You are going to play for Rekids at the WMC 2012 Miami. Will it be your first time? I used to play at Electric Pickle, but I have never played in Miami during the Winter Conference before. Yes, it will be my first time and I am very excited. Last su ummer we saw you playing at Cocoon and DC10. What do you think about playing in Ibiza? I think playing in Ibiza is always good. Because in any case you get the best food, sea and the sun! but talking seriously, I like playing in Ibiza because it is very different to anywhere else. The vibe is just unique. People here want to celebrate
life in every possible way. They need some serious fun. You can feel that a DJ in Ibiza is a part of a huge industry, which is good but also can be bad if you don’t know how or don’t want to deal with that. Sound systems in most of the clubs are really good and clubs themselves are just really big. If the party is good and you are the one who was making it happen - it’s just unforgettable. But the most amazing thing is that there is a flip side to the island that is truly beautiful and has nothing to do with clubs and DJs. There are totally quiet places where you can have very tranquil life surrounded by incredible nature.. . What are the 3 most important things a DJ should have? Version number 1: passion for music, sense of groove and balls to guide people on the dance floor by playing the music you truly feel. Version number 2: ears, balls and hands. Well, you can see balls are of great importance for a DJ (laughs). Your favourite club in the world? Rex club, Robert Johnson and you know dc DC10 seems to be very nice! p.s. I also really like Amnesia for the sound system.. If you hadn’t become a DJ, what you might have done instead? Perhaps I would have continued working as a dentist but I would most likely have started working in science. I would do research in order to know more about how “time” works in reality. What do you usually do when you are not on tour? Lock myself at home with books, food and a hot bath... Tell us your plans for 2012 I am very excited to have my album released on February 27th... I’ve been working on my live show and I’m really looking forward to singing my songs live! I am very much looking forward to coming back to the dream island!

¿De dónde eres? Nací y crecí en la ciudad de Irkutsk, la capital de Siberia Oriental, Rusia. ¿Cuándo y cómo empezaste a pinchar? Simplemente no podía soportar no estar involucrada en ello. Quería compartir mi propia comprensión de “la forma en que debe sonar”. Alrededor del 2003 empecé a tocar bandas sonoras italianas, blacksplotation y la disco underground de los 70 en un café. Al mismo tiempo empecé a comprar discos de techno. Entonces empecé a tocar en clubes de vez en cuando. Poco después, en el 2006, me fui a Australia para asistir a una sesión de Red Bull Music Academy... eso me cambió mucho como persona. Empecé a sentirme más segura de mí misma y 2 años más tarde me convertí en residente en el mejor club house de Rusia, Propaganda. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de ser DJJ ? La parte interactiva. Me encanta compartir la música con la gente. Aunque siempre es una pequeña batalla: hay que conseguir que se interesen, que te aprecien. Si lo consigues, es lo mejor del mundo. Cuéntanos más sobre la publicación de tu primer LP, ¿cómo lo definirías y cuál fue el motor? Es una pequeña historia. Mi historia. Cuando lo escuches me vas a conocer un poco mejor, porque el motor fue mi experiencia personal emocional. Vas a pinchar para Rekids en la WMC 2012 en Miami. ¿Será tu primera vez? Solía pinchar en Electric Pickle, pero nunca había tocado en Miami durante la Winter Conference antes. Sí, será mi primera vez y estoy muy emocionada. El verano pasado te vim mos tocar en Cocoon y DC10. ¿Cómo es tocar en Ibiza? Creo que pinchar en Ibiza siempre es bueno porque tienes la mejor comida, el mar y el sol. Hablando en serio, me gusta tocar en Ibiza, ya que es muy diferente a cualquier otro lugar. El ambiente es único. Aquí la gente quiere celebrar la vida de todas las maneras posibles. Necesitan un poco de diversión de verdad. Puedes sentir que un DJ en Ibiza es parte de una gran industria, lo cual es bueno, pero también puede ser malo si no sabes cómo o no quieres lidiar con eso. Los sistemas de sonido en la mayoría de los clubes son muy buenos y los clubes mismos son muy grandes. Si la fiesta es buena y eso es gracias a ti, es simplemente inolvidable. Pero lo más sorprendente es que hay otra cara de la isla, que es verdaderamente hermosa y no tiene nada que ver con los clubes y DJ. Hay lugares muy tranquilos donde se puede tomar uno la vida de forma relajada rodeado de una naturaleza increíble... ¿Cuáles son las 3 cosas más importantes que un DJ debe tener? Versión 1: pasión por la música, el sentido del groove y bolas para guiar a la gente en la pista de baile tocando la música que realmente sientes. Versión 2: orejas, bolas y manos. Bueno, podéis ver que las bolas son muy importantes para un DJ (risas). ¿Tu club favorito en el mundo? ¡Rex Club, Robert Johnson y también DC 10 parece ser muy agradable! También me

gusta mucho Amnesia por su sistema de sonido. Si no te hubieses convertido en DJ, ¿qué podrías haber hecho? Tal vez hubiera continuado trabajando como dentista, pero lo más probable es que hubiese empezado a trabajar en ciencia. Investigaría con el fin de saber más acerca de cómo “el tiempo” funciona en la realidad. ¿Qué sueles hacer cuando no estás d e gira?

WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE 2012
Winter Music Conference (WMC) 2012 is the 27th annual program for what is largely regarded as the pre-eminent platform on the global music industry calendar for launching new music, technology and trends. Winter Music Conference Week 2012 happens March 16 – 25, 2012 in Miami Beach, Florida. For 2012, WMC plans to further enhance the WMC experience by delivering ten non-stop days of music programming in Miami Beach and Miami. This expansion will wrap the program week with two full weekends of parties and events. WMC Co-founder, Bill Kelly, explains, “Expanding the WMC dates was an easy decision given the high demand of artists, businesses and industry delegates. Miami Beach and the greater Miami area boast some of the most celebrated event and club venues as well as the hotels and resorts that comprise South Beach’s famed Art Deco District. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops and every sort of possible entertainment venue are filled to capacity during WMC Week to the point where five days just wasn’t enough.” New for 2012, WMC will be unveiling correlated segments of its industry program dedicated to music and fashion on its opening weekend and indie rock meets electronica programming under the WMC Rocks header on the closing weekend, in addition to its standard programming and events. NEVERDOGS Where are you from? From Catanzaro, a city in southern Italy, but we now live between London and Ibiza. You usually play at Egg, London, and this year you’ve Djed at Tenax, Florence,, with Craig Richards. How is the English audience compared to the Italian audience? Over the years we have played at the most important Italian clubs. We have been residents at Docshow, Bologna, for nearly 10 years. In London we play at Egg, Follow Me and Secret Costume Party. The British are more attentive to new trends compared to the Italians, although they’re both very warm towards us. 2011 has been a great year for your career: you’ve played in different countries and produced some tracks on diffferent labels. What about this year? Actually, 2011 was a very important year, since we played at famous European clubs, and also in the States and at Move On Festival in Uruguay, and we had plenty of success. Our last releases – Istrana EP on Eucatek and Bisquits EP on Idea - received positive feedback from Richie Hawtin, Steve Lawler, DJ Sneak, among others. This year we’re concentrating on new productions and DJing in Europe and also in other continents. Tell us about your latest releases No reflection EP feat. Maria Angeli came out recently on Idea Records and received positive feedback. It’s a tech house three tracks album. In addition, it’s about to come out Still in my town on Pleiadians Records. ¿De dónde sois? De Catanzaro, una ciudad del sur de Italia, aunque vivimos entre Londres e Ibiza. Normalmente tocáis en el Egg de Londres y este año habéis pinchado en el Tenax de Florencia con Graig Richrds. ¿Cómo es el público inglés en comparación con el italiano? En todos estos años hemos pinchado en los clubes italianos más importantes. Somos residentes en el Docshow de Bologna desde hace casi 10 años. En Londres pinchamos en Egg, Follow Me y Secret Costume Party. El público inglés está más atento a las nuevas tendencias que el italiano, aunque los dos son muy cálidos. El 2011 ha sido un gran año para vuestra carrera: habéis pinchado en distintos países y producido varias piistas para distintas etiquetas. ¿Cómo se prevé este año? Efectivamente, el 2011 ha sido un año muy importante: hemos pinchado en clubes europeos muy famosos y también en EE UU y en el Move On Festival de Uruguay, donde hemos conseguido un gran éxito. Planes para 2012 Me concentraré en mi sello y en el desarrollo de mi programa de radio mediante la creación de una agencia de eventos y una gira mundial. JIMITHESUN Where are you from? Born in Venice, Italy. When and d where did you start DJing? In 2002 and since then I’ve been resident at many clubs and events in Slovenia and Croatia. I arrived in Italy in 2004 as a DJ and art director of Afterhours. In 2006 I started collaborating with Space Ibiza and Movida Club in London. Now I’m on a world tour with my label Digital Traffik and work as a guest DJ with the Komitee group at Space and at Tresor in Berlin. You are famous for your strong personality, what do n stage? The most important thing is you usually do on having fun and enjoying music so I can share these good vibes with my audience. In 2005 you founded Digital Traffik Recordings. What have been your main releases? Digital Traffik is one of the best labels in Italy and well respected around the world. We have got famous underground producers and on the last two vinyls DJs of the likes of Aldo Cadiz, Basti Grub, Andre Butano, Jose De Divina, Alberto Sola and Psykoloco have collaborated. Tell us about your new radio program It’s the first time I’ve had my own showcase, it’s called “Keeping Underground Alive” and it’s just incredible! It’s a weekly program on Ibiza Global Radio. Plans for 2012 I will concentrate on my label and developing my radio program by creating an event agency and a world tour. 30 YEARS OF SUCCESS Some clubs do not need a description. Tenax in Florence is certainly one of them. It is September 1981 and Florence is prey to the fury of the new wave, dark, punk, which is the new sound coming from the United Kingdom. A small group of young people decides to create a new alternative disco, alert to new styles and new musical trends. They created Tenax. RECORDS Underbelly Records is a label that specializes in deep house, minimal and techno productions, for the connoisseurs of electronic dance music. Formed as a consequence of the Underbelly club nights, where DJs naturally branched into producing their own music. The Underbelly family hosts private parties throughout the year, known as The Underbelly of Society Ball. Originally started in London’s east end at random dates and venues, which have now also taken place in Ibiza and Italy, and look to take on America in 2012. These exclusive parties attract the most discerning, random, life-loving spirits that clubland has to offer. The Underbelly logo is predominantly made up of the Astrological Natal Chart of Tim Underbelly. In the centre is a pentagram, a mystical symbol believed to protect the bearer, made up of the elements: fire, water, earth and air, plus the spirit. Surrounding the pentagram is the wording of the Pagan outlook in life “in perfect love & perfect trust.” The Idea behind the logo is that whether it is on a record, flyer or a piece of clothing, the bearer is under a spiritual spell of protection. All things Underbelly; the record label, parties, clothing, accessories, music video production and artist management, are run by brother and sister team, Tim and Amy Underbelly. Underbelly Records es un sello especializado en producciones deep house, minimal y techno, pensado para los conocedores de la música electrónica y dance. Apareció a raíz de las noches del club Underbelly, donde los DJ se diversificaron de forma natural y acabaron produciendo su propia música. Durante todo el año, la familia Underbelly organiza fiestas privadas, conocidas como The Underbelly of Society Ball. Originalmente empezó en el East End de Londres en fechas y lugares elegidos al azar, y ahora también tienen lugar en Ibiza e Italia, y piensan en enfrentarse a Estados Unidos en 2012. What is the best season to go to Miami?I recommend visiting Miami in winter for its temperature. Would you return to live there? Miami and Ibiza are my two homes, I would never leave one since I can have both!
Name My name is Maria Jose but in Miami they call me “Peca” and in Ibiza “MJ”. Where are you from? I was born in Chile, raised in Miami from the age of 7 and when I was 25 I moved to Ibiza. What do you do? I work for the Pacha Group in Ibiza as part of its new project Lío, a cabaret restaurant that enjoyed great success last summer. What do Ibiza and Miami have in common? They share the sun, gorgeous guys and good music. What more could a girl ask for? (Laughs) What do o you miss about Miami? The truth is I do not have time to miss Miami because I visit regularly.
