Nijhuis Industries acquires Excellent Ozone Solutions With the acquisition of Excellent Ozone Solutions, the product range of Nijhuis Industries has expanded with innovative ozone disinfection systems and unique monitoring and service concepts.
Other applications of ozone are disinfection for reuse of process water and removal of medicinal residues from wastewater. As undisputed market leader in the Netherlands, Excellent Ozone Solutions will take the opportunity to explore activities worldwide, using Nijhuis network and expertise in the water and wastewater arena.
Disinfection with ozone is the sustainable alternative to chemicals in the prevention of Legionella in open cooling tower systems.
Reference project Excellent Ozone Solutions has built a 3000 gr ozone system for E.On Benelux NV to treat recirculating cooling water (total of 15.000 m3 /h) coming from four cooling towers at the power heating plant with a joint capacity of 204MW. This installation is based on cold plasma technology, resulting in the production of more ozone at very high
concentrations of up to 300 gO3/nm3 (20wt%) with less energy consumption than conventional systems. The microbiological control by using ozone in cooling tower systems for oxidizing microbes (Legionella) is the most effective method. For example E-coli bacteria are eliminated around 1000 times faster than with the use of chlorine under the same circumstances (with elevated pH). Ozone also destroys the sedimentary deposit (bio film) throughout the entire water system and prevents further deposit. Simultaneously the probability of microbiological contamination is reduced significantly.
END-O-SLUDG project Nijhuis Water Technology is one of the leading parties in the END-O-SLUDG project, which is a collaborative research project involving 14 European partners drawn from industry, academia and government establishments. Together, the partners are tasked with identifying and developing innovative system solutions for municipal sludge treatment and management in the context of EU climate change mitigation and energy policies.
The END-O-SLUDG project aims are: • Sludge reduction: To improve the sewage treatment processes by using innovative techniques to reduce net energy consumption and sludge arising. • Sludge treatment: To develop a range of novel sludge treatment processes that increase biogas yield, reduce capital investment requirement
and combat the resurgence of the pathogen indicator in the sludge products. • Market development: To develop a portfolio of high quality sludge products that cater for a range of value-added applications. The project will also seek to address the legal, economic and market issues associated with the introduction of waste-derived products.
• Contribution to carbon reduction: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing energy efficient techniques is at the heart of the END-OSLUDG project and will help to support the move towards a low carbon economy. In the progress meeting in Oviedo a few new developed concepts were presented.
The EU is responsible for the generation of 9.4Mt of sludge each year and the figure is set to rise. Major challenges to sludge management include: (1) material reuse/disposal (2) environmental and health impacts of sludge management practice (3) regulatory compliance and public perception.

Aecomix TM Anaerobic digestion systems for sludge, waste & water
ent together with pre-treatment.
NOMINEE
The AecomixTM system is a waste to energy concept based on anaerobic treatment combined with solids retention by Dissolved Biogas Flotation. The unique and robust concept for food and beverage plants is focussed on treatment of waste waters with relatively high Total Suspended Solids and/or Fats, Oils and Greases together with their organic waste streams in one reactor. A single step process solution for different substrates, converting organic matter into biogas, with a total removal efficiency on organic matter of up to 98 %. Based on extensive and full-scale testing at different industries, the process has proven to be very robust. It has a sustainable low OPEX due to higher biogas production and stable operation as a result of the use of a combination of proven technologies like Digestion and Flotation.
• Dairy • Vegetable and fruit Design highlights • Substrates with medium to high levels of TSS and FOG can be handled in the AecomixTM • The solids recycle allows for a minimized hydraulic retention time and an extended solids retention time • Typical loading rate 3-7 kg COD/m3 /day • Gas storage can be integrated in tank design through a double foil membrane roof, otherwise a separate gas holder can be provided • Heat exchange tubing inside the tank to maintain temperature and to heat up substrate
• No pretreatment (chemicals) required for waste water • System can be executed with mechanical mixing or gas mixing. (Tank execution without moving parts inside is possible.) Factors of excellence • A single process to convert a mix of wastewater and organic wastes in one anaerobic reactor into an energy source • Gentle mixing and gentle separation preserves biomass and biomass activity • No contact with air, preserves the biomass (methanogenic) • High performance • Highly adaptable to local requirements and conditions • Simple and stable process
Applications The system applies to waste with a high organic load and a low(er) dry solids content, such as: • Whey • Sugar • Waste from candy production • Glycerine It is a perfect solution to deal with factory effluent together with organic wastes without the need of a chemical pre-treatment. Typical examples of such industries are: • Chocolate • Ice cream

Nijhuis Ammonia Recovery (NAR) Anaerobic digestion can be toxicated by high ammonia concentrations, e.g. in chicken manure & slaughter waste. The Nijhuis Ammonia Recovery (NAR) is developed to remove NH4-N at 60 80˚C before anaerobic digestion. At this temperature NH4-N is removed ≥ 80% and suspended COD is more hydrolysed, result 10 - 30% more biogas. Washing with H2 SO4 will result in valuable ammonium sulphate which is a fertilizer and clean air.

Intelligent DAF The next generation Technical Description The inside fed rotary drum screen has a drum with perforated holes. The inlet system is a unique patented design, which is clog free and adjustable for various waste water characteristics and project requirements. Adjustable process parameters are flow rate, solids loading and dryness of the screenings.
The Nijhuis Water Technology Dissolved Air flotation unit is for decades known as the most robust and best DAF unit available in the market.
The drum is chain driven and installed around the drum. Rotating parts are positioned outside the wet parts of the screen. The cleaning system of the screen consist of a brush and jet spray. Screenings transport will be done by an internal screw inside the drum towards the solids discharge. Screen is standard equipped with an overflow.

Second largest biogas plant in Europe, from design to full scale operational plant
Introduction Mironovski Hleboproduct operates a large vertically integrated chicken complex. The plant is mainly digesting chicken manure and other agricultural substrates. The biogas installation creates value for the chicken complex as it is helping the customer to become energy-selfsufficient by:
• creating heat for the digester during the year • using heat in the winter time for buildings and stables • production of energy during the entire year

Preparation of Substrate
The Taurus reactors, designed and constructed by Nijhuis Water Technology, will digest different types of substrates: • Chicken manure from the farm • Flotation sludge from the waste water treatment plant • Sorghum, which is similar to maiz • Waste water
The chicken manure and sorghum will be dosed via two bunkers into a mixing tank. In the mixing tank the dry substrates will be added and mixed with liquid substrates like wastewater and flotation sludge. The homogeneous mixture is pumped and distributed over 6 main digester tanks and 4 post digester tanks.

Digestate treatment
The Taurus digester tanks, each 30 meters in diameter, are mixed and heated to allow anaerobic biological activities to produce biogas. To increase and optimize the biogas production the mixture from the main digester tanks is divided over 4 post digesters. A two-step system is designed to increase the biogas production.
The biogas will contain relatively high amounts of H2 S, which is too high for the gas motors. The installation is supplied with a desulphurisation system and a gas scrubber.
The cleaned gas is used to run four combined Heat and Power units (CHP) each 1 MWel and for the gas boilers of the slaughterhouse. The heat will be used in the process and in wintertime also in the chicken houses. The power can be used at the slaughterhouse during all seasons.
The digestate (material remaining after the anaerobic digestion of a biodegradable feedstock) is separated in a solid fertilizer and a liquid fraction. The liquid fraction will also be used as fertilizer.
