What is

DESIGN ? Design is everywhere - and that’s why looking for a definition may not help us grasp what it is. It’s what drew you to the last piece of furniture we bought. The single word ‘design’ encompasses an awful lot. Design could be viewed as an activity that translates an idea into a blueprint for something useful, whether it’s a car, a building, a graphic, a service or a process. The important part is the translation of the idea, though design’s ability to spark the idea in the first place shouldn’t be overlooked.

Creativity

A design doesn’t have to be new, different or impressive to be successful in the marketplace, as long as it’s fulfilling a need, but design methods do lead to innovative products and services. Designers learn that ideas that may seem strange are worth exploring and that the ‘common-sense’ solution is not always the right one. Designers often hit on counter-intuitive concepts through Design Council - 2 methods such as drawing, prototyping, brainstorming and user testing. Watching users in real-world situations especially gives insights into their behaviour that lead to ideas that wouldn’t have formed had the designer simply thought about the situation, or relied on generalised market research.

Design and Business

Designers, unlike artists, can’t simply follow their creative impulses. They work in a commercial environment which means there is a huge number of considerations that coming to bear on the design process.

Design and the User

Good design begins with the needs of the user.

“Design is a balance between form and function” 7

PERSPECTIVE Drawing The world around us is in 3 dimension, so it very important to understand the perspective. Sense of height and depth is very important in visual design. We understood 1 point , 2 point perspectives and fundamentals behind it. The concept of vanishing point and baseline. The NID tomb was taken as an object to study and was drawn in one point and two point perspectives.

NATURE Drawing Nature is model which has evolve through ages and hence it gives us immense opportunities to observe and learn from it. All the basic principles of design are followed when we study the form and shape of the objects carefully. Design Elements like : colour, shape, texture, form can be taken as inspiration for any design project. A simple leaf study of any plant can teach us about the basic elements. This exercises helped me understand the nature in design perspective and made me more observant to look into the minute details in texture, form and function.

COLORS Speak Colors are nothing but energy, and when it is used with text aptly they together speak a common story. To communicate something we need to design by making the right color choices. This exercise was about convey a story using color language as the mode. I chose my Goa experience as the story.

COLOR Association Being a designer we need to be aware of our surroundings, so it is necessary for us to keep our eyes and mind open to things. This exercise we had to collect material in all tones for an allotted color, for me it was Bluish Purple. After collection we had to arrange them like a color wheel but in a rectangular fashion. This exercise made us observant to colors present in surroundings. Starting from colors on the wall to a wrapper in a dustbin.

Key Take Aways : Observant to colors Color Recognition Importance of light

COLOR Making Colors are very important part of design so to understand the science behind it is really important. This exercise helped us understand the parameters involved around colors like Hue, Saturation, Value. We had to manually mix colors and make color wheel by matching colors with the material color wheels. Tints, Chroma and Shades color wheel were made.

Key Take Aways : Color Science Color Parameters Importance of light Observant to surroundings

COLOR Science Monochrome object and designs are very rare, so it becomes very essential to understand how color interact with each other. The first exercise was to depict the word fear using 2 colors. I used red and black combination as these colors are associated with horror and horror induces fear. The other pair was chosen inspiring from the dark forest in the night. The second exercise was about color contrast and the importance of foreground and background colors. First exercise was the contrast between tertiary and primary color and the second was the contrast of complementary colors.

Analogous colors are those which lie on the either side of any given color. Analogous colors scheme are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye.

Complimentary Split Colors Complimentary Colors

Complimentary colors are those which are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. Important element can be highlighted because of the high contrast present between these colors.

Analogous Colors

Cool Colors

Split complimentary color scheme is the variation of complimentary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two color adjacent to the complimentary colors.

Rectangular Colors

Square Colors

Triadic Colors

Rectangular color scheme uses four colors arranged into two complimentary pairs. This rich color scheme offers plenty of possibilities for variations.

This color scheme is similar to rectangular color scheme with all four color evenly spaced in the color wheel.

Triadic color scheme uses the power of 3 colors which are situated at 120 degree in the color wheel. Triadic color harmony is considered to be the best color scheme.

COLORS Theme Nature has colors more than that our eye can perceive, so to get the right color theme for the design we sometimes need to extract colors from well composed images. This exercise was to go around and click pictures and then simplify the image in terms of colors and shapes. I chose the photo taken from Vishala an utensil museum in Ahmedabad.

COMPOSITION Importance composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art We had to torn paper by hand and stick on 25 cm x 25 cm box wither black on white or vice versa. This exercise was to make us realise that the basic principles of design are inevitable and we apply them subconsciously.

Key Take Aways : Importance of Composition Balance of the greys

24

GESTALT Principles.. Principle of Similarity

Principle of Association

Principle of Ambiguity

Principle of Simple Shape and Contour

Principle of Enclosure

The eye has a tendency to group together the shapes which are either exactly the same or have similar character. As a rule the grouping results from the similarity in size, shape, location, orientation, brightness or colour

All the nine principle of gestalt described above are independent of any previous experience of the observer. However there are gestalts whose perception is strictly based on previous experience

Many gestalts are ambiguous to perceive. this happens mostly with some two dimensional objects. Whenever an easy and quick readability is necessary ambiguous shapes or structures are not desirable. Ambiguity arises when both ground and figure of a two dimensional gestalt are of equal importance to the eye.

When the perception is a matter of choice between a simple and a complex shape the simple shape will eventually dominate

In perception, closed shapes or conglomeration of shapes are preferred for readability over the unclosed shape. As a corollary to this principal, even with interruption the shape is read as a closed shape

25

GESTALT Principles Principle of Continuous Shape

Principle of Nearness

Principle of Symmetry

Principle of Even Width

Principle of Self-Interesting Linienzug

Independent of the previous experience the eye always tries to correct and complete an incomplete shape. the tendency is strong enough to overcome the resistance including a psychological resistance. For instance depending on the context, circles not absolutely round.

The human eye prefers to group those elements which are nearer or which have smaller distance in between and see the in between space as a figure. Conversely, it need strong effort to group and see the elements other than those preferred to define the figure

if there are in a space, elements which define symmetrical shapes, the eye would invariably prefer to see the symmetrical shapes in preference to the unsymmetrical ones. The principle of symmetry has proved dominance over the principles of nearness and enclosure

When there are several elements of defining shapes the eye tends to ‘read’ only those shapes with even width in preference to the shapes with uneven width

The shapes generated by self-intersecting linienzug are not read as separate shapes bt as part of a single gestalt

26

COMPOSITION in 3D This exercise was to make a 3D composition using 3 basic 3D object - pyramid , cube and sphere. We had to depict a situation in the composition. The situation we chose was “ Moments before the Rocket launch Here in the first iteration we depicted the Rocket with triangles and the smoke with small spheres. All the similar sized cubes and circles are people and the transparent room is the control room. Black and white cubes represent the scientists.

Key Take Aways : Make Structure out of basics Situation composition Proportion Abstraction Simplification

BODY Expressions First impression is a very major factor behind successful designs. It is important for us express ourselves confidently way font is important for words, in the same way right body posture is important for communicating. This unique exercise was conducted by Pradip Patil where we did series of work outs for team building and body expressions. All the workouts helped us realise the importance of control over once body.

Key Take Aways : Team Building Importance of body Movements Coordination

28

COMPOSITION Skit This assignment was about performing a skit/play in front of the NID community. This exercise involved lot of Conceptualisation, Writing the Script, Set Design, Acting, Music/Sound, Costume Design, Production Management, Logistics, Publicity & Promotion (Logo/Poster Design, Installation etc), Documentation (Still and Video) etc. So here it got plenty of opportunity to work on and a chance to interact with each other, get acquainted with the NID’s systems, people, in a meaningful multi disciplinary activities - In true sense - an intense orientation. There were three restrictions - No dialogue in the play, no expensive light effects and no print outs.

Key Take Aways : Team work Management skills Preproduction

29

Pre-Production.. Branding The process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product/ service in the consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers. definition/ branding.

30

Costumes The Costumes for the actors were designed considering the colors and the role. The cloth for the costumes was also bought so that it suits the body movements and help in showing body expressions clearly. The stiching was done in textile studion NID itself.

Promotion Promotions refer to the entire set of activities, which communicate the idea, brand or service to the user. The idea is to make people aware, attract and induce to come for the event, in preference over others. Different medium were used so that the event is publicised among all the masses. Facebook Page and event was used to reach on social platform. Pre production videos were made and shared across different social media. Hand made posters were put up all over the campuss. Every team member wore a group badge.

Pre-Production Story Boarding

Story - Writeup The act tries to explore the true nature of our habit and our relationship with them. Through the medium of personification we depict how man right from his birth embarks on the journey of self-realization. There are habits that are acquired subconsciously and then there are those that he desires to inculcate. But to fulfil this desire he must overcome various inhibitions and distractions, but not without a fight. During this journey where habits come and go, he evolves in the persona without even realizing the impact that he had on himself.

Casting A storyboard is a graphic organizer in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of previsualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence. Once the script got final complete story boarding is done by the team to visualize the scene which would help in the direction of the skit.

Casting is a pre-production process for selecting a certain type of actor, singer or dancer for a particular role or part in a script involving a dramatic production meant for an audience. The roles were allocated based on several factors like experience, skills, relevance and personality.

ART and Aesthetics The fulcrum of the course is art, beauty and philosophy. The module begins by raising questions such as what is art? What is design? What is beauty? What is good art ? what is not? The notion of value in art and so on. In the Western tradition, we cover concepts like ‘realism’ (Plato), ‘empiricism’ (Aristotle) and ‘sublimity’ (Longinus), and undertake a brief journey through various other theories leading to the post modern age. The questions of power and politics play a crucial role in the study of art and culture and the module covers some of the theories. We also looked at theories of aesthetic perception in Classical India. Rasa theory as espoused by Bharatamuni (Natyasastra). In the process, we tried to explore the concept of bhavas, the process of generation of rasa, the essence of dramaturgy and poesie, etc. Art and Design are different from each other in the sense of their functionality, but the aesthetic qualities remain consistent. The Rasa theory talks about the aesthetic attitude and the involvement of the viewer in the process.

Art has no end but its own perfection Plato 33

RASA Theory The very core of the Sanskrit Natya theory is the creation of “Rasa”. Every dramatic presentation was aimed at evoking in the minds of the audience a particular kind of aesthetic experience, which is described as “Rasa”. The concept of “Rasa” is the most important and significant contribution of the Indian mind to aesthetics. The study of aesthetics deals with the realization of beauty in art, its relish or enjoyment, and the awareness of joy that accompanies an experience of beauty. Rasa has no equivalent in word or concept in any other language or art of the world hitherto known to us. The closest explanation can be ‘aesthetic relish’. Bharata classifies the Rasa under eight categories (ashtarasa) and gives the corresponding Bhava which gives rise to the rasa. These are known as Sthayi Bhava or pervading stable emotion. They are 1. rati(love) 2. hasa(mirth) 3. shoka(grief) 4. krodha(anger) 5. utsaha(heroism) 6. bhaya(fear) 7. jugupsa(disgust) 8. vismaya(wonder)

No meaningful idea is conveyed if the “Rasa” is not evoked Bharata Muni 34

MUSIC and Image This Exercise was about how music can associate with images and paint a different picture in the eyes of the observer. We chose the music “ Flight of the Bumblebee” The pace of the music is very fast so to justify that we chose pictures which shows fast motion. “Flight of the Bumblebee” is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

35

ART and Society The assignment was to show the importance of art in the society. We chose Hand Painted Bollywood Posters. The study helped us understand how Art is used for communicating a message. With the advent of modern era hand made poster lost its way and digital posters took over it. In pre-colour photography days, artistes will use black and white film stills to hand-paint coloured posters on canvas, which, in turn, will be used as a template for printing posters by lithographic method. Poster painters emerged as an art fraternity unto themselves and laid the foundation for hand-painted posters.

DESIGN and Print This exercise was to give us hands on experience of the complete printing process cycle. We had to design and print one poster related to printing technologies in team of 7. We chose gutenberg as the central figure for our poster as he is considered to be the Father of printing. The poster was to be designed in 3 colors in which black would be printed by screen printing and other 2 colors in offset printing. Once the design is finalised the separate positives were made after color separation. The Offset printing was a cumbersome task as it took many adjustments for us to get proper registration. The final stage was screen printing which was done on a semi automatic printing machine.

The complete theory was documented as a book which helped us understand imposition and layouting. The book will help us stay in touch with the printing basics.

INDUSTRIAL Visit A field visit to experience and feel what production and printings like in an assembly line right from the pre press till the post production steps. This is intended to reinforce the understanding of the course covered in the theory section. The overall learning experience proved very useful. Printing is a very complex process with many steps involved. All of these are inter dependent. Even a slight problem in one of the steps will effect the subsequent ones. As a designer it’s very important to be aware of all these steps to get the desired final output.

LATERAL Thinking Lateral thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. Lateral thinking, is the ability to think creatively, or “outside the box as it is sometimes referred to in business, to use your inspiration and imagination to solve problems by looking at them from unexpected perspectives. Lateral thinking involves discarding the obvious, leaving behind traditional modes of thought, and throwing away preconceptions.

CREATIVE Thinking One of the most useful of all thinking modes in creative problem solving is visual thinking. It is especially effective in solving problems where shapes, forms, or patterns are concerned. To improve our powers of visualization, concentrate on the accompanying illustration. Creativity is the ability to bring something into existence that was not there before. Creativity is the connecting and rearranging of knowledge in the minds of people, who allow themselves to think flexible - to generate new, often surprising ideas that other judges to be useful. HOOK & Loop This assignment we had to select a very basic object and study its form and function in a group of 10. After all the discussion we selected hook and loop commonly know as velcro. We bought the object for observation and started our study around it. After presenting the study we had to formulate a design brief around the object of study. We went to the hook and loop manufacturer in Ahmedabad and had a discussion with the owner. A survey was also conducted to know the common man perception and awareness about the object. The finalised brief was presented to the jury with the design proposal.

LETTER Integration I This project was completed in a series of stages. I began by experimenting with letterforms, and how they coexist and interact. I focused in on my own initials, N and M, and while varying typeface and size, created many iterations. Then, I compiled some more formal experimentations in Photoshop and Illustrator and created 3D form of it.

I selected A and 5 because the letter form of A in lowercase and upper case has completely different forms. Explorations of 2 letter forms gave me insights of the principles involved in the form creation and it helped me to get more efficient results.

Key Take Aways : Letter forms Incremental refinement of form Exhaustive nature of design development

OBJECT Abstraction First we were asked to select a broad theme and then select an object which falls under the selected theme. After brainstorming we came up with two themes : Home and Adventure. I chose adventure to work upon as a theme. Now to select an object which is available around us, i had to go through the complete design process. Different object came to my mind, but the one thing that was common among all the adventurous sports activity was rope and the hook. After few iteration i selected the front view and started working on the abstraction by tracing the image on paper. Here we had to make sure that the material of the object is reflected even when the object is in black and white.

ICON Design Pictogram or Icons are the most minimalist and informative images. An image speaks more than the text. In this assignment we were asked to depict a message using an icon. I chose to depict “Be aware of loose rocks in trekking context. In my personal trekking experience i have been a victim of loose rocks. Hence i chose to design an icon for it. Many times when you are trekking suddenly the terrain gets rough and you tend to slip because of it. So if you see a signboard before crossing it will help one in taking precautionary measures and prevent the possibility of an accident. Even in rock climbing sports when the mountain is very steep the loose rocks from the top can fall on you and cause harm to person who is climbing.

TYPEFACE Study Form Study This assignment was about how much we know about the font that we think that we liked. I liked Futura font because it is a sans serif font and very clean and crisp edges. We are asked to write our name in the font that we selected, without a reference of any sort. In the later iterations we had to rectify the form by comparing it with a reference.

Expressive Characters Project the characteristics of a person by choosing a suitable font and layouting the name in a specified space. I had to project “Learning” Qualities of Sheetal This exercise made me go through thousands of font to reach to a final selection. After many iterations and Tarun and Akash’s input I selected a sketch font named ‘FFF Tusj’ and the capital L shows that she is still learning.

EMPHASIS Making This assignment we were asked to layout the text which was provided to us. For me it was in Devanagri script. We had to do so by keeping the same bold and light typefaces. In the first exercise we had to keep the size same and in second we could change it. This exercise helped us understand the importance of font weight in a layout and also how one can use this as a tool to hold the meaning in the words.

EPITAPH Design

This was a very unique exercise where we had to design an epitaph. That sounds sad and interesting at the same time. So here we had to select a font which can be carved easily without loosing its form. I chose FF Meta The quote and graphic i chose was to justify that i never want to die. I reversed the hands present in the famous painting of Michelangelo to signify that I am the last person on earth and God is taking life from me.

SPEECH Layout In this Exercise we had to layout the famous speech given by Steve Job at the convocation ceremony. Word expression is incomplete without proper hierarchy and an appropriate font. I chose DIN to give that good design touch to the speech, as Steve Job has been associated with good design and it is his forte. I created stress on punch lines by increasing the font size and weight. The complete speech is divided into 3 chapters as Steve himself divided his life story in three unrelated stories.

TYPOGRAPHY Inspirations We had to design poster to show our typography inspirations. First poster shows the Fashion Companies Logos. The reason behind for these to be my inspiration was because major part of branding of these companies relies on the shoulder of the shape and letter forms of the logo. The second poster was to be designed with a restriction that it should be of indian origin. This was due to my keen observation during travelling in a train. These hand painted text has very clear form which helps in readability, even in motion,
