PACKAGING Packaging is the technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Package Design is the discipline of creating the container, graphics and visible outer space.
Primary Packaging Directly holds the product
Secondary Packaging Outer wrapping that helps to store, transport, inform, display and protect the product. Secondary packaging is used to group primary packages together.
Tertiary Packaging It is used for bulk handling, warehouse storage and transport shipping. Generally it doesn’t reach the end user.
4
PURPOSE OF PACKAGING Contain To hold the product
Protect Prevent breakage, spoilage, contamination, tampering and theft
Inform
To identify the brand, to explain how it should be used, to warn about the hazards for misuse and to reveal product related information
Transport To safely move the product from the manufacturer, then to the retailer and finally to the consumer
Display
To attractively display and facilitate the sale of the product
5
It is must to have a thorough knowledge of a product before designing the packaging. Whether it be market data or physical properties of a product, it pays to take the time to become familiar with all the available information.

A Sari, saree or sadi is a South Asian female garment that consists of a drape 6 meters in length and 1.2 meter in breadth, that is typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder. The sari is usually worn over a petticoat and blouse
Sarees are carried in separate polybags which are given by shopkeeper
Majority of the saree transportation is done through trucks. 7
In shops, Sarees are generally stored in shelfs
Sarees are displayed in multiple ways. Most common way is to hang it by a hanger.
Sarees are also put up on mannequins to attract customers.
8
A clear understanding of the segment of the market which the package is expected to serve is necessary before a valid design can be created.
9
Saree industry is one of the major industry in women
There are different types of sarees and different ways of wearing it.
10
A well-designed package will cater to the needs of the purchaser. These may be either psychological desire or practical applications, but whatever they are, the package designer must recognise them and satisfy them.
11
Folding - Saree folding after showing it to the customer is the major area of interest, as it affects the buying and selling experience. In business time is money, so how much time a customer takes before buying can be reduced by having an efficient system. A packaging which could assist the seller in folding can make the process fast and add to the customer satisfaction.
Closed Box - Customer is unable to make a choice directly from the shelf. Colour identification - Saree which are packaged in closed boxes, makes it impossible to recognise the content from outside.
Gift Wrap - Sarees are used as traditional gifts so it becomes necessary to have a packaging which adds value to the gift.
12
Price Tag - Price tag is generally stapled or stuck on the saree itself, as the packaging and saree are not attached.
Wear and tear - Costly sarees looses its quality because of repetitive showing and displaying, hence a loss to the salesman.
Display - Displaying a sample of the design attracts more customers and it makes the sale faster. Store – In homes ladies generally keep the sarees in stacks or hang it over a horizontal bar.
13
Plastic - Present plastic packaging adds to the littering and cause ecological problems. Carry - Majorly cloth materials are carried in a plastic bag, which has now become a problem and many cities plastic bags are banned.
Show - Saree is a 6 meter long cloth material, so showing the main attributes becomes necessary. At present it is achieved either by showing the complete saree or by showing the catalogue of models wearing those sarees
Locking mechanism - Boxes are designed with no lock mechanisms which limits its orientation to horizontal.
14
Transport - Sarees are transported in corrugated carton boxes, sometimes when the primary packaging is a box lot of extra space is consumed and adds to the cost of the saree.
Measure - Measurement of the saree and blouse. Customer sometimes need to cut the blouse themselves to give it for stitching.
Branding – The packaging and the product gets mixed up in a large lot as they are separate entities.
15
Satisfying the fundamental needs is absolutely essential to the success of the package. Other desires can be brought in light once the necessary is covered.
16
Package-design is not an isolated system but an integrated one. The package must fit into the manufacturing-marketing mix and contribute its share to the effective operation of all the segment of the process. A right packaging needs thinking ahead to the various situations which will confront the product and package through the many channels of procurement, manufacturing, storage, shipment and use, in order to achieve the optimum result overall.
17
Movement of manufactured goods between manufacturer to wholesaler and wholesaler to retailer should be taken into consideration before package designing, because it may look not as good at the retail outlet as it looked when it was used at the point of packaging.
