STEEL RAIN NEWS J A N / F E B

2 0 1 1

From the Commanderand battalion Holiday parties and even made room for the big guy in the red suit (a.k.a. SSG Smith) to pay us all a visit. Through some generous contributions from our Soldiers, we were able to purchase some Christmas presents for a young orphan boy in the local community and treat him to a hearty meal. We were even entertained by the ever so lovely Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders (I’m a Redskins fan, so I could not go) and the U.S. Army Soldiers’ Show.

Dear Steel Rain Family, Happy New Years! The Steel Rain Battery had an exciting and very unpredictable December in the Land of Morning Calm. If you watched any news, then you saw North Korea getting a bit unruly and threatening an all out attack on South Korea. Shortly thereafter, you saw North Korea change its position and back down from its hard line stance. What you may have missed on the news was the fact that the Steel Rain Battery and the rest of the 210th Fires Brigade stood up and loudly proclaimed that any attacks on the people of South Korea would not be tolerated. You can be proud knowing that your Steel Rain Soldiers were responsible for deterring North Korean aggression and ensuring the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula remained intact.

So another year is upon us as we welcome in 2011. I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season and that the new year brings you love, joy, happiness, and fortune. CPT Maull Steel Rain 6

With all of that excitement, we still found the time to have enjoy the holiday season and have a little fun. We enjoyed battery

The Legend of St. Barbara “According to legend, Saint Barbara was the extremely beautiful daughter of a wealthy heathen named Dioscorus, who lived near Nicomedia in Asia Minor. Because of her singular beauty and fearful that she be demanded in marriage and taken away from him, he jealously shut her up in a tower to protect her from the outside world. Shortly before embarking on a journey, he commissioned a sumptuous bathhouse to be built for her, approving the design before he departed. Barbara had heard of the teachings of Christ, and while her father was gone spent much time in contemplation. From the windows of her tower she looked out upon the surrounding countryside and marveled at the growing things; the trees, the animals and the people. She decided that all these must be part of a master plan, and that the idols of wood and stone worshipped by her parents must be condemned as false. Gradually she came to accept the Christian faith. As her belief became firm, she directed that the builders redesign the bathhouse her father had planned, adding another window so that the three windows might symbolize the Holy Trinity.

“The order links field artillerymen of the past and present in a brotherhood of professionalism, selfless service and sacrifice symbolized by Saint Barbara.”

When her father returned, he was enraged at the changes and infuriated when Barbara acknowledged that she was a Christian. He dragged her before the perfect of the province, who decreed that she be tortured and put to death by beheading. Dioscorus himself carried out the death sentence. On his way home he was struck by lightning and his body consumed. Saint Barbara lived and died about the year 300 A.D. She was venerated as early as the seventh century. The legend of the lightning bolt which struck down her persecutor caused her to be regarded as the patron saint in time of danger from thunderstorms, fires and sudden death. When gunpowder made its appearance in the Western world, Saint Barbara was invoked for aid against accidents resulting from explosions--since some of the earlier artillery pieces often blew up instead of firing their projectile, Saint Barbara became the patroness of the artillerymen. Saint Barbara is usually represented standing by a tower with three windows, carrying the palm of a martyr in her hand. Often, too, she holds a chalice and a sacramental wafer and sometimes cannon are displayed near her. In the present calendars, the feast of Saint Barbara falls on December 4th and is traditionally recognized by a formal military dinner, often involving presentation of the Order of Saint Barbara. The Order of Saint Barbara is an honorary military society of the United States Field Artillery. Both U.S. Marine and Army field artillery along with their military and civilian supporters are eligible for membership. The order is managed by the U.S. Field Artillery Association and two levels of recognition exist. The most distinguished level is the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara and those who are selected for this honor have achieved long-term, exceptional service to the field artillery surpassing even their brethren in the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara. “ *

The Story of Molly Pitcher “An Artillery wife, Mary Hays McCauly (better known as Molly Pitcher) shared the rigors of Valley Forge with her husband, William Hays. Her actions during the battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778 became legendary. That day at Monmouth was as hot as Valley Forge was cold. Someone had to cool the hot guns and bathe parched throats with water. Across that bullet-swept ground, a striped skirt fluttered. Mary Hays McCauly was earning her nickname "Molly Pitcher" by bringing pitcher after pitcher of cool spring water to the exhausted and thirsty men. She also tended to the wounded and once, heaving a crippled Continental soldier up on her strong young back, carried him out of reach of hardcharging Britishers. On her next trip with water, she found her artilleryman husband back with the guns again, replacing a casualty. While she watched, Hays fell wounded. The piece, its crew too depleted to serve it, was about to be withdrawn. Without hesitation, Molly stepped forward and took the rammer staff from her fallen husband’s hands. For the second time on an American battlefield, a woman manned a gun. (The first was Margaret Corbin during the defense of Fort Washington in 1776.) Resolutely, she stayed at her post in the face of heavy enemy fire, ably acting as a matross (gunner). For her heroic role, General Washington himself issued her a warrant as a noncommissioned officer. Thereafter, she was widely hailed as "Sergeant Molly." A flagstaff and cannon stand at her gravesite at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. A sculpture on the battle monument commemorates her courageous deed.”*

Molly Pitcher’s Monument presently guards the Old Carlisle Cemetery in Pennsylvania. * From http://www.landscaper.net/artylgnd.htm
