BA (Hons) Graphic Product Innovation London College of Communication Degree Show 2011
What is Graphic Product Innovation? BA (Hons) Graphic Product Innovation is an interdisciplinary design course which has given us the ability to focus on ideas and design principles we can then apply across and outside of traditional design disciplines. We have an understanding of how design thinking can be used to analyse existing situations, communicate ideas and solve problems. Over the three years, we have focused on why we design and who we design for. We take into consideration how our designs are going to be seen and how they’re going to be used. We look at using design as a tool to see and to influence the bigger picture. Most briefs focus on design methods and processes and are not prescriptive and neither are we. Each of us have developed into very different designers with our own understanding of what Graphic Product Innovation is.
Ladies and Gentlemen! Roll up! Roll up for a once in a lifetime opportunity! For one night only, the first graduating year from BA (Hons) Graphic Product Innovation, will be entertaining guests with a unique outdoor event which aims to promote their work and themselves to prospective employers. A new course from London College of Communication that strives to offer multidisciplinary industry ready designers to a market that is hungry for innovation. Popcorn, Propaganda, Carnival characters and connections! Just some of the prizes on offer at the final of the university’s ‘Round About’ Show. The event, ‘The Spectacular Propaganda Extravaganza!’ is a refreshing take on the generic gallery space and business card routine. Guests are invited to interact with the students and each other through the curious setting of a carnival. In addition to this, the BA (Hons) Graphic Product Innovation students will be exhibiting their major projects in the lower street gallery. This is an opportunity to see the diverse briefs, skills and talents of the first graduating year.

This is a self-initiated project experimenting with ‘zombified’ products in a post apocalyptic scenario when a cure has eliminated the undead’s urge to attack all humans. However, even though their human personality has returned that craving for brains has not left. I used the British supermarket Waitrose as a platform for development. In response to the scenario Waitrose releases a zombie friendly products in their ‘essentials’ range. I wanted the final outcome to appear to be a real snippet of the scenario and a shopping bag with a few essential items is an every day scenario we can all relate to.

GPI gave me the required tools and design thinking to successfully complete my final four projects. Which proved essential for the CykeNav and CykeApp projects. User based research was key to the success of these projects. Part of my research included meeting up to give participants head cams so I could get a user perspective of cycling and navigating. I enjoy meeting new people and learning from what they have to say. These meetings were invaluable to my research. The challenge of designing a product suitable for cyclists, was a great way to show my abilities to prototype and create simple yet effective systems.
Tom Maxwell Giving and Getting, was an RSA brief that asked designers to find another way for charities to ask for donation or encourage people to donate. I chose this brief as I was drawn to the challenge of trying to affect peoples behaviour in regard to a familiar action. Through my research I found concept of trading donation for warmth. As I had decided to look at the British Heart Foundation I developed the ‘Heart Warming’ campaign: an interaction based around waiting for a bus at a bus shelter. On a cold night while waiting for a bus you are given the opportunity to stand next to a homely log fire while being warmed by an overhead infrared heater for the donation of £1.

The Map of Internet content touches every stage of interactive website development, user centered design and infographics. Bringing this project to life I had to explore in depth the structure of the Internet and the data flow in its networks, providing invaluable experience for my future career and a successful test of my skills. My challenge was to represent the complex structure of the Internet and its content in a user-friendly way. The map of the Internet can be seen at www.inetmap.net is an innovative way of browsing websites and depiction of statistical data that makes the Internet look more real.

An awkward or embarrassing moment will always happen when you least expect it. They happen to us all, anywhere and everywhere. When they happen to someone else it’s generally quite funny, or a relief. My aim for this project was to explore whether it was possible to avoid an awkward or embarrassing moment, by developing a system that can be used in a public space. Identifying the most popular awkward and embarrassing moments that happen to people and illustrating them. Whilst developing this project I also considered other possible outcomes for the illustrations. The strongest being an Alcohol Aware campaign.

This brief helped us discover that the majority of students experience stress, pressure and lack of motivation, which leads to them leaving work till the last minute, which is a serious issue. We thought it would be better if students managed their time more effectively, which would ease the stress to organise their work. We decided to focus on our class and our brief was to design a time management system where students can be more prepared with their work. With our research we produced an idea of having a live calendar and an interactive system for students to be more involved and reminded of what they have to do.

“A non-existing exhibition” is a project that takes a character from a work of fiction and presents them as an artist performing in London at the National Theatre. The character is professor Woland from the novel by Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov called “The Master and Margarita”. In the book, Woland is a mysterious professor who is visiting Moscow, presenting a performance of ‘black magic. However, the real face of Woland unfolds later, as he appears to be Satan himself. In my project, Woland and his demonic company are advertised to be performing in London at present time; Non-existing, fictitious characters are transferred to the existing place.

Collaboration roll is a 5 metre tool that helps people get together. The roll is the process you go through to make a project. It is also the result of the experiment of taking out the design process out of the design context and opening it to the use of several other subjects working together. It should help question, develop and refine a project’s idea as well as helping you think and re-think. It is designed to be fun so it is colourful and easy to read. Use thick marker pens, post-its, coloured pencils and scissors. Every person sitting at any of the places will have their bit to read, so everyone gets a chance to be involved. Enjoy.

This project was based on the movement of pedestrians within Elephant and Castle. When analysing the overall space you can see that pedestrians were being forced into underground subways where they can feel “trapped” and “confused”. With so many subway entrances and exits, you’re most likely to end up going in the wrong direction. I decided to design a new signage system that focuses on giving pedestrians quick and relevant information including transport routes very rapidly. Signs will be located outside each subway, with larger signs in key hotspots where people usually get lost.

For my ‘Giving and Getting Project’ I have chosen to work with is Great Ormond Street Hospital. The brief was to design a method that would make it easier for the charity to ask for money as well as people to give. My idea was to get the children involved so they could be a part of helping others. The idea is that children in a group would with the help of teachers or a group leader sell homemade cookies and cupcakes in packaging with G.O.S.H branding to help promote the charity, inside the packaging an information card explaining how to give more money at a later stage without feeling pressuring customers into doing so.
