Strategies to Improve Patient-Doctor Communication

Health

When confronted with chronic illness or a new diagnosis, people often have many questions about medical care. Today’s fast-paced medical environment, however, can discourage many patients from getting the most out of their physician visits. Often, important questions about medications and medical treatments go unasked and unanswered. Why does this happen? Sometimes patients report feeling that their doctor was “too busy” or “didn’t seem to have enough time” to address their concerns. Still others say that they “didn’t want to bother their doctor unless it was an emergency.” Yet, not understanding how to take new medications or fully grasping treatment options can result in emergency medical situations – the very events that most people try to avoid. Feeling empowered to ask for your doctor’s time when you need more information can be an important way to ensure that your medical care is the best it can be. Understanding what your doctors say during medical appointments, however, can help you better advocate for your care. Some strategies to boost your understanding of important medical information include taking notes during the visit or enlisting a trusted friend/family member to sit in and provide a “second set of ears.” Another helpful strategy is to write down a list of your concerns in a note you can bring to your doctor. When your doctor walks in for your appointment, you can hand the note to your doctor and say, “Doctor, here’s my list.” Once you understand the medical information your doctor presents to you, you can determine what questions to ask during the visit or during a follow-up call or appointment. The American Cancer Society provides the following list of general questions that patients can tailor to their individual medical situations: What’s wrong with me? What treatment do you recommend? Are there other treatments? What are the benefits and risks of these treatments? What medicines are you giving me? What are they for? How should I expect to feel during treatment? What side effects, if any, can I expect to have? The Niles Senior Center Caregiver Support Group is a source of practical and emotional help for caregivers, where issues such as improving communication with physicians and medical professionals are frequently discussed. The group is facilitated by senior center social workers who can share coping tools, help relieve caregiver stress, and offer a safe place for caregivers to receive the support of other community members dealing with similar challenges. If you are interested in the Caregiver Group, please contact Bev Wessels at (847) 588-8420.

Stroke...Diabetes..Heart Disease - Life Line Screening Niles Senior Center is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on Monday, April 13, 2015. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. Brush off the dust from your dancing shoes, warm up your vocal cords, and sharpen your wit – it’s time for the Annual Niles Senior Center Variety Show!! We cannot assume you will automatically want to be in the show year after year, although we hope you do!
