Balancing the emotional and physical demands of caring for a loved one is challenging. While friends and family may provide a great-deal of support to a person, a time may come when more help is needed.

Social Worker’s Corner

Deciding on In-Home Care: Questions to Ask

When confronted with a major medical change, such as a stroke, cancer diagnosis or surgery, a care recipient may face new safety concerns. And if safety issues such as falls or poor medication management exist, more than one caregiver may be needed. Maybe a family member only previously needed help with transportation or small errands. After a major medical event, occasional help from friends or family might not be enough. A person experiencing frequent falls or increased immobility may now require in-home care. Once the need for in-home care is established, there are questions to ask. You can start by assessing what caregiving needs exist. Do you or the care recipient need help with personal care (bathing or grooming), or mostly with household care issues -- such as cooking and cleaning? Maybe transportation is the most critical need in order to keep up with doctor and social appointments. By determining which activities can be managed independently, it will then be easier to find a good match for an individual’s needs. In the best of circumstances, hiring qualified in-home help can help improve a person’s quality of life, not rob the person of their independence. To ensure that you are hiring good in-home care, it is important to ask an agency how workers are screened, paid, trained, supervised and scheduled. It is also important to: Personally interview prospective condidates Check personal and professional references Observe how the worker interacts with the care recipient. Does the person seem warm and engaging? Does the worker have the personal skills to deal effectively with anger, confusion or anxiety? Understand the tasks a worker excels at, but also assess any limitations. Are the limitations acceptable to you and the care recipient? For example, a worker who can’t drive may not be a good choice when a primary need is transportation.

The Niles Senior Center Caregiver Support Group is a source of practical and emotional help for caregivers, where issues such as hiring in-home help are frequently discussed. The group is facilitated by a Senior Center Social Worker who can share coping tools, help you relieve caregiver stress, and offer a safe place for caregivers to receive the support of other community members dealing with similar challenges. If you are interested in this group or know of a caregiver who might benefit from the Caregiver Group, please contact Bev Wessels at (847) 588-8420.
