Lite Lunch and Movie: Boyhood (R 2014 165min) Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring, Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. -IMDB. Lunch includes a pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw and dessert. Cole Porter Presentation & Luncheon Cole Porter was one of the great American songwriters of the 20th Century. He was also very unique because he wrote BOTH the lyrics and the music with no collaboration. The only other of his contemporaries who did that was Irving Berlin, who was also a good friend. This presentation is a one hour look into his life and music which includes a few film clips of his songs introduced by dancers Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers and Eleanor Powell on screen. All songs are performed by John Boda along with brief details on each and many pictures. A few included are “Night & Day”, “Begin the Beguine”, “True Love” and more! Taking Care of the Caregiver
Information
It’s hard to describe exactly what a caregiver does, because they do so much. While many people know that their workday ends at 5 p.m., caregivers often work round-the-clock shifts. They are often endlessly busy, looking after spouses or parents with complex medical situations that create many needs. Everyday activities that were managed independently by a once healthy family member-- such as personal care, cooking and medical treatments -- may now require a caregiver’s total supervision. Yet, serving as a full-time caregiver increases the risk of both physical and emotional burnout. Caregivers may skip seeing the doctor when they’re sick, simply because they can’t find the time. Sometimes, rather than getting enough quality sleep, they are disturbed during the night with requests for help that can’t wait until morning. It is all too easy for a compassionate caregiver with good intentions to become exhausted. When stress and fatigue take over, caregivers may find themselves isolated from the people and things that bring joy and meaning to their lives. Caregivers can often justify not caring for themselves for many reasons. Caregivers may feel they are the only people able to care for their loved one, finding it difficult to trust others’ help. Reaching out for support, however, can provide caregivers with time to take care of themselves – so they can continue to caregive in a healthy way. It can be challenging, for example, to arrange for another family member or home-health care worker to be with a loved one. A caregiver might feel guilty leaving their spouse or parent – even for a few hours. Yet, making the time to exercise, have lunch with a friend, go to the mall, or attend a support group may be the best prescription for a caregiver’s wellbeing. Without respite from fulltime caregiving, normal feelings of anger, frustration and resentment associated with caregiving can become overwhelming. If you have any questions about resources to assist a caregiver or would like to participate in the Caregiver Support group, please contact Bev Wessels at (847) 588-8420. We are pleased to announce that Milcah Baraona joined the NSC staff on May 11, 2015, coming to us from the City of Evanston where she worked in the Department of Health and Human Services. During her 14 years there, she worked with seniors, persons with mental illness, and other at-risk populations, in the areas of social services, program development, and community health/wellness. In addition to planning programs at NSC, Milcah will be working to increase membership and promote community outreach efforts through social media. She also sits on numerous civic engagement, educational advocacy, and arts-oriented boards in her free time. Milcah has already planned a number of programs and is anxious to meet everyone. Please stop by and introduce yourself the next time you’re in.
Congratulations Chester Szafranski
We are very excited to announce that this year’s recipient for the Annual Super Senior Award was given to Chester Szafranski. Chester was honored at the 42nd Annual Super Senior Day at North Shore Senior Center on Thursday, May 21st. Since joining the AARP Tax Aide Program in 2005, Chet Szafranski has completed countless tax returns. In 2012, Mary Ann Borucki retired from the Senior Center and the tax program was in question. The staff knew all too well the complexities of the program, but Chet stepped up to the plate. When asked, he agreed to serve as the Coordinator of the program, which added a whole new list of responsibilities. He now not only trains counselors and prepares tax forms, he also e-files all returns, follows up on the ones that are rejected and is the go to person when the IRS needs to be contacted. Due largely to his expertise, the AARP Tax Aide Program just finished another successful year. We thank you for your professionalism, endless patience and dedication to the program.
