Sweetheart Scams – Dating scams are as old as the hills, and Internet dating has created another way for them to proliferate. A boyfriend or girlfriend who claims to be wealthy but doesn't have cash at the moment will ask for money for a "sure thing" investment. People who engage in online romantic relationships with people they have not met in person are in a prime position to be cheated. Wednesday, Jan 17 • 11:00am • NO COST

Betty White Luncheon with Barry Bradford Betty White has been called a national treasure – and rightly so! Year in and year out, she has been voted one of America’s most beloved entertainers. You know her as the seemingly polite, but secretly scheming Sue Anne Nivens on the “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” the naïve and trusting Rose on “Golden Girls,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka on ” Hot in Cleveland.” She has been a staple on talk shows, game shows, and has even performed in some popular movies. What you may not know about Betty White, is that she was a pioneer in television, being the first woman to produce her own show. She is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. Most importantly, she is widely considered to be one of the nicest people in all of show business. This warm, charming and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. Lunch will include a grilled chicken sandwich, pasta salad and dessert. Wednesday, Jan 31 • 11:00am-1:00pm • $10M/$15NM Judy Garland: Beyond the Rainbow with John Boda We will look at the incredible life and career of Judy Garland starting from her childhood days as Francis Ethel Gumm and singing with her sisters. Select big hit songs she recorded will be performed such as “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart”, "The Trolley Song”, “On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe”, “Over the Rainbow" and more! Lunch includes mostaciolli, beef sandwich, salad and dessert. Friday, Feb 2 • 11:00am-1:00pm • $10M/$15NM

Inspired by his three-year old daughter asking him, “Daddy, why don’t I have good hair,” Rock realized she had already absorbed the perception among some Blacks that curly hair was not “good.” The film goes from the hair salons across urban America to temples in Southeast Asia to focus on how African-American women have perceived their hair and historically styled it. Good Hair explores the current styling industry for Black women, images of what is considered acceptable and desirable for African-American women's hair in the United States, and their relation to African-American culture. A Message from Our Social Worker Caregiving: Moving from Resolutions to Self-Care Making and keeping a new year’s resolution leaves many people overwhelmed. Resolutions often focus on losing weight, exercising more, or taking up a new hobby. How can a new year have so much power over us? Caregivers, however, are often struggling to find time to shop, work or sleep. Traditional resolutions may seem meaningless when a caregiver is trying to meet his or her own needs and that of a partner or relative. Last January, the Huffington Post listed the following 5 New Year’s Resolutions for Family Caregivers: ● Prioritize your own physical and mental health. The daily stress of caregiving often places the caregiver at risk for health challenges. Caregivers often fail to keep their own medical appointments, which can make it difficult to sustain caregiving. Consider finding days that a friend or relative can give you respite to visit your doctor. Also consider counseling or attending a support group to reduce risk for anxiety or depression.

847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

Get more sleep. Sleep deprivation affects many Americans -- and especially caregivers who must often get up at night to help their loved ones with personal care or emotional support. If possible, hire overnight help to assist you. If this isn’t possible, try to go to bed earlier or immediately after your loved one goes to sleep.

Schedule “me” time. Try to coordinate respite for yourself with a loved one, in-home care provider or adult day care program. This time apart can make caregiving more sustainable.

Spend more quality time with your loved one. Day-to-day caregiving can mean that, though your loved one’s needs are met, you have less meaningful time together. Watching a favorite show, ordering delivery of a favorite meal, or going for a ride are just a few examples of nice ways to connect.

Plan for your loved one’s care. Consider family and other caregivers that can provide care for your loved one should you fall ill. Review Advance Directives and other important documents.

Niles Senior Center social workers can be a helpful resource to answer caregiver questions. We also have a monthly caregiver support group. Please call Melanie Amin, LCSW, Senior Social Work Coordinator at (847) 588-8475 for more information on caregiver resources and available support. New Program! This March we launch our Dinner and Discussion Group: Grief, Loss and Change. While the group will support people coping with grief and bereavement, we welcome participants managing other types of loss. Some examples of issues we will cover include moving, changes in health or mobility, changes in relationships with friends and family, and adapting to living alone or with others. The first meeting will be held at the Niles Senior Center on Wednesday March 28 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. The program is open to Niles residents and will meet the fourth Wednesday of each month. Attendees have the option to purchase an early dinner for $5, but there is no cost to attend the program. Registration required. Please contact Melanie at (847) 5888420 for more information on this new program.

Fight Fraud: Guard Your Medicare Card! If you have Medicare, you can protect your identity and help prevent health care fraud by guarding your Medicare card like you would a credit card. Identity theft from stolen Medicare Numbers is becoming more common. Medicare’s here to help by removing Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards and replacing them with a new, unique number for each person with Medicare. Medicare will mail new Medicare cards with the new numbers between April 2018 and April 2019. Here are some important steps you can take to protect yourself from the identity theft that can lead to health care fraud: Don’t share your Medicare Number with anyone who contacts you by telephone, email or in person, unless you’ve given them permission in advance. Medicare will NEVER contact you (unless you ask us to) for your Medicare number or other personal information. Don’t ever let anyone borrow or pay to use your Medicare Number. Review your Medicare Summary Notice to be sure you and Medicare are only being charged for actual items and services received.

If you’re looking to enroll in a Medicare plan: • • •

Remember there are no “early bird discounts” or “limited time offers.” Don’t let anyone rush you to enroll by claiming you need to “act now for the best deal.” Be skeptical of free gifts, free medical services, discount packages or any offer that sounds “too good to be true.”

If someone calls you and asks for your Medicare Number or other personal information, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). To learn more about protecting yourself from identity theft and health care fraud, visit www. Medicare.gov/fraud or contact your local Senior Medicare Patrol (www.smpresource.org). This message is brought to you by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hey, Illinois!!! Did you know you may be able to request a replacement Social Security Card online easily and securely? Visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber to find out how.
