Dinner & Movie: Courage (PG13, 2015, 118 min) Tuesday, July 5 • 5:00pm Starring: Aaron Eckhart “What Freddie Steinmark (Finn Wittrock) wants most in the world is to play football. Although he is deemed too small by the usual athletic standards, his father trains him hard. Freddie brings a fight to the game that ultimately gets him noticed--by none other than legendary University of Texas coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart). Awarded a scholarship and a chance to play for the Longhorns, Freddie sets off to Austin with his loving high school sweetheart, Linda (Sarah Bolger), determined to make the team. Alongside his old teammate Bobby Mitchell (Rett Terrell) and new pal James Street (Juston Street), Freddie is put through the paces of a grueling practice schedule. The boys’ camaraderie off the field translates into solid playing on it, and they rise up the depth charts, giving the Longhorns a real chance to improve upon their mediocre record. But just when they’re reveling in the success of the season, Freddie suffers an injury that leads to a shocking diagnosis and the biggest challenge he will ever face.” – IMDB.com Dinner includes: hot dog, chips and dessert. $2M/$3NM Movie ONLY, NO COST Encore presentation: Wednesday, July 6 • 1:00pm NO COST Dinner and Movie: The Big Short (2015, 130 min) (Extreme Language) Tuesday, July 12 • 5:00pm Starring: Christian Bale, Steve Carell & Ryan Gosling “Based on the book by Michael Lewis (writer of Moneyball, Liar’s Poker and Flash Boys, among others), the true story of a handful of investors who bet against the US mortgage market in 2006-7. Enrichment/News & Announcements
The NSC is excited to announce a partnership with the University of Illinois-Chicago Extension to present a series of workshops for our members. Molly Hofer, the Family Life Educator with University of Illinois Extension will be facilitating the sessions. Ms. Hofer is a gerontologist by specialty and provides a variety of workshops for professionals, families, and individuals in Cook County. All sessions are provided at NO COST, but pre-registration is required. Hold That Thought! Thursday, Aug 25 • 11:30am Have you ever gone into a room and couldn’t remember why you went in there? Have you ever misplaced your keys or cell phone? Have you ever forgotten what you were about to say? If you’ve answered “yes,” you are not alone! Everyone forgets things now and again, and this happens throughout life. Did you ever need to remind a child to hang up his coat or take out the garbage? Yes, memory does change as we age, but forgetfulness is common for people at all stages of life. This interactive discussion-based workshop will look at the memory process and what researchers say contributes to brain health, as well as provide fun and interesting strategies for helping challenge ourselves to overcome everyday forgetfulness. (Light refreshments will be provided.) Looking for the Funny Side Thursday, Sept 22 • Time to be announced When was the last time you laughed really hard – a hearty sidesplitting belly laugh? Humor can be good for you. Bringing humor into your life can provide both physical and psychological benefits. Do you look for humor in your everyday life? You don’t have to be a comedian to have a sense of humor. This program will help participants look at ways humor can help them deal with stress and change in their lives. Benefits of humor will be identified. (Light refreshments will be provided.)

A note from Kathy... It is with great pleasure that I have been given this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Kathy O’Grady and I am the new full-time social work coordinator in senior services at the senior center. Instead of an article this month that focuses on social services, I would like to tell you a little about myself and how I came to become a social worker. My biggest influence came at a young age when my mother and I would walk across the street every morning to take care of a lady I will call Mrs. N. Mrs. N. was an older lady who was married and whose family had a very successful Chicago business. Mrs. N suffered from what I later came to learn was cancer and she required help with cleaning the wounds that were a result of the radiation she was receiving. This was in the early 1970’s and neither radiation or hospice were services that were as well known or as widely used as they are today, and her family was inexperienced when it came to taking care of a loved one. Thus every morning, my mother and I would walk over to Mrs. N. and I would watch as my mother cleaned Mrs. N’s wounds and applied new bandages.
Social Worker’s Corner
Welcome Kathy O’Grady, LCSW
Ultimately Mrs. N. succumbed to cancer, but my daily visits to Mrs. N. taught me several life lessons. One, that we as individuals and many times, as families have limitations that hinder us from caring for our loved ones. The limitations may include not feeling that one is adequate or able to take care of a loved one, especially when they are ill. In many cases, it is better that a spouse or children take a step back and let a person with more knowledge or experience help a loved one. It is often hard to let a stranger in, not only to the home but into one’s daily experience, but it can make the world of difference for a spouse or the children to just experience their loved one as their father, mother or sibling instead of the continuous caregiver. The social services department at the senior center has many types of referrals that could be of help to you. This includes information about the Community Care Program (CCP) through the Department on Aging, which can offer up to 20 hours of care in the home at no cost if a person meets financial criteria. Additionally, the department has referrals for private duty agencies in the area that are licensed, bonded and have experience taking care of individuals that have memory loss, end stage illness or if a person is just in need of companionship. We also have information on facilities that provide independent living, assisted living and skilled care if you are thinking of long term care planning for yourself and your spouse.
I look forward to meeting you and assisting you where I can in your life endeavors.

As I mentioned, I learned many life lessons from my mornings with Mrs. N. and my mother. One of which is that it is certainly OK to ask for help. It may come in the form of asking your younger neighbor to shovel your walkway, asking a relative to pick up medications at the drug store or asking a friend for a ride to church. Mrs. N. taught me that asking my mother for help was not an imposition. Mother knew that by helping , Mrs. N. she would be able to live in her own surroundings for a longer period of time. Mrs. N. taught me that help can be right across the street. In the case of village residents, help can be found on the second floor of the senior center.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NILES SUPER SENIOR HANK BETKA We are very excited to announce that this year’s recipient for the Annual Super Senior Award was given to Hank Betka. Hank was honored at the 43rd Annual Super Senior Day at North Shore Senior Center on Thursday, May 26th. Hank Betka is one of the most energetic, dynamic volunteers the NSC has. As a former longtime employee, Hank’s affiliation did not end upon his retirement. He continued his service as a volunteer and took up the difficult task of being the Men’s Club President. Hank’s dedication has led him to be a fierce advocate for building community partnerships. There is no job too big or small for Hank and we are honored to have him as a Volunteer. Hank, we thank you for your constant dedication to the NSC!
