The Musical Memory Singers offers individuals and caregivers an opportunity to engage in the moment through song and join a joyful new community. Members will share musical memories while singing a variety of familiar songs. The experience also helps reduce caregiver stress by allowing both the caregiver and loved one to take a needed respite from their roles.

Determining an approximate date may help you to know whether the woman in the photo is your grandmother or your great-grandmother. This is where costume dating can be helpful. Becoming familiar with certain popular silhouettes enables one to assign a date range to a photograph, thus helping to identify those pictured. Basic facial recognition will also be covered which will help identify the same person in several photos over time. There are some good, easy tricks which you will learn in this presentation. *If you would like, please bring 1-2 photographs prior to the day of the program and we will all try to date them for you using the techniques in the presentation. Volunteer Summer Spotlight Senior Center Volunteer John Dunne has been a Niles resident for 23 years. He retired 17 years ago after working as a software programmer for a governmental agency for 26 years.
As his curiosity grew he decided to ask one of the drivers if he could help. The individual told him that he was a volunteer Meals on Wheels driver through the Village of Niles Senior Center, and if he wanted to get involved he should contact Kelly Mickle, the Director of the Senior Center. John made the call and has been a dedicated volunteer ever since. He currently delivers meals 3 times a week and is missed by everyone on his route on the rare day that he can’t be there.
Volunteer Spotlight
John has been a Meals on Wheels Volunteer for the Niles Senior Center since March of 2011. It all started when he noticed volunteers delivering a meal to his elderly neighbor weekdays during the noon hour. There were a number of different people and they all appeared to have regularly scheduled times. His neighbor lived alone and the daily interactions obviously brightened his day.
19
When asked what John’s favorite part about volunteering is, he states “I love giving back to the seniors even though I’m one too. I like giving back to the people that normally wouldn’t get it. I get to meet their family and caregivers, and I enjoy the overall camaraderie. “ John has several memorable moments from his years of delivering meals but one of his favorites is of a husband and wife. Every day when he arrived the wife would be setting the table so she could have a nice lunch with her husband. As the task became more difficult John stepped in to help and visited with both as he put out the place settings.
The Niles Senior Center is honored to spotlight John Dunne as going above and beyond as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program. He is always willing to pick up extra routes and help wherever needed. He exemplifies volunteerism and is a gift to the Village of Niles community.
George Button - 45th Annual Super Senior The Niles Senior Center is pleased to have George Button as our 2018 Super Senior recipient. George has been volunteering as the Rhythm Band leader at the Niles Senior Center for the last 17 years. Once an internationally renowned linguist who has held prominent positions with governments around the world, George now uses the language of music to bring joy to older adults in Niles and the surrounding communities. He takes the music seed that has been planted in every one of us, and fosters blooms of sound in those among us who never realized we had any type of musical skill, let alone enough to play in a band. He devotes countless hours a month in recruiting new band participants, directing the bi-weekly band practice, and providing one-on-one ukulele lessons to members---all from the goodness of his heart. George keeps the spirit and soul alive through his gift of music and is an invaluable member of the Niles Senior Center family. The Niles Senior Center is honored to have George as our Super Senior 2018 recipient.
847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com
John loves music, and is a leader and cantor at St. Hillary’s and St. Juliana’s. He also enjoys gardening, bike riding, and spending time and helping out with his grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Leah, Jack and Shannon. During the last few years, John has had the opportunity to share his passion of volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program with his grandchildren who have volunteered to ride along and deliver meals with their grandfather.

A Message from Our Social Worker..... Have you ever been concerned about the wellbeing of an older neighbor or friend in Niles? Maybe you felt the person was struggling with their health, their finances or their sense of safety in the community.
Social Services
Worrying about a fellow senior can be a difficult problem to manage. Although you may want to provide support and assistance to a friend or neighbor, you may not know where to start or where to turn. To address the challenges that Niles residents, businesses and organizations may face in assisting a senior in trouble, the Niles Senior Center created Niles Helping Elders through Referral and Outreach (HERO). The HERO program is a collaborative, community-based system for identifying and assisting older adults at-risk physically, emotionally, socially or financially. The program offers community members a way to confidentially refer vulnerable seniors to needed resources. As Niles Senior Center social workers, we can respond to your HERO referrals by reaching out to a senior and offering comprehensive assessment, referral, case management and counseling services. In addition, we can offer crisis intervention, help arrange in-home support services and address concerns about available community resources. When Should I Make a Hero Referral? We encourage community members to connect with us if they are concerned about a fellow senior. We can help you determine what resources might be helpful to address the situation you’re concerned about. Some general reasons to refer older peers to the HERO program include: • Signs and Symptoms of Distress/Emotional Changes (confusion; depression; severe forgetfulness) • Health Issues (difficulty coping with medical issues; reduced ability to manage daily life; struggling with self-care; falling; homebound) • Safety Issues (wandering; kitchen fires; disconnected phones; occasionally unable to recognize surroundings) • Financial Issues (problems managing finances and paying bills; can’t make change or balance checkbook) • Caregiver Issues (caregiver appears overwhelmed or expresses anxiety about caring for a spouse, relative or adult vulnerable child)

How Can I Make a HERO Referral? To make a HERO referral, call (847) 588-8460 and say, “I want to make a HERO referral.” Your referral will be directed to the senior social work department, where one of our workers will follow-up with you for more information about the senior. After the worker assesses the situation, they will then try to personally connect with the at-risk senior to address concerns or conflicts. It is important to note that your HERO referral will remain confidential. Unless authorized by you, no other individual, agency or department of the Village of Niles will be aware of your contacts with us. To learn more about the Niles HERO program, please contact Melanie Amin at (847) 588-8460. We look forward to answering any questions you might have.

Code of Conduct Participants are expected to maintain an accepted level of conduct and hygiene so as not to cause harm or distress to self or others. Disruptive behaviors that affect others will be immediately addressed and may call for immediate and/or permanent dismissal of the participant. Parking Vehicles must be parked in a designated space. If a parked vehicle is taking up more than one space, it is not an acceptable excuse for another operator to do the same. Should the staff witness or be notified of any issues in the Senior Center lot, including locked cars with engines running, parking illegally in or next to a handicapped spot, fender benders, and/or observed difficulty with driving, the police will be called to respond. Permission to Photograph Photos are periodically taken of participants in a class, during a special event or any other Senior Center function. These photos are for Village of Niles use and may be used in Village publications.
