Our first outing will be a trip to see Oakton Community College’s presentation of Hedda Gabbler Sunday, Mar 6 • 2pm-Play, Dinner- Immediately following play Hedda Gabler is the prototypical “desperate housewife”. Married to a man beneath her station who she doesn’t really love, she longs for her personal freedom. When she becomes entangled in her husband’s academic rivalry, she finds that she can pull the strings that hold together careers as well as life and death. After the play, we will share a family-style feast at Café Lucci. Dinner will begin with Italian bread and roasted garlic and olive salad. Then we will enjoy pollo asparagi (boneless breast of chicken sautéed in white wine with fresh asparagus and sun-dried tomatoes), salssiccia con pepperoncini (charred Italian sausage sautéed in garlic and olive oil with mixed bell peppers), penne pasta in tomato vodka cream sauce, coffee/tea, and spumoni. Managing the Stress of Chronic Illness

As people continue to live longer, it’s hard to find a family not affected by chronic illness. While a person might fully recover from a sudden illness in a few days, chronic illness lingers – creating lasting stress and potential family conflict. Cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, are just some of the many medical conditions requiring patients and their families to adjust to medical, emotional and caregiving challenges. Understanding as much as possible about a new diagnosis, with the help of a medical team and family advocates, is a good first step. Doctors and family members may have good ideas about resources to access effective medical treatments, community resources and social support. Consulting with one our senior center nurse may able a helpful first step in navigating the many medical questions faced with a new diagnosis. People facing chronic illness are often worried about challenges to their independence. The question, “Will I be able to take care of myself?” is a difficult question for newly diagnosed people and their close family members to answer honestly. Chronic illnesses affect people differently, making them difficult situations to predict and plan for.

Identifying caregiver burnout is also an important area to address. While a spouse may say they are able to caregive for their partner round-the-clock, all people need respite from caregiving to stay emotionally and physically well. Keeping family communication open about ways to share caregiving responsibilities -- and consider hiring in-home care if needed -- is an important part of keeping every family member healthy. The stress of a new diagnosis can feel overwhelming. If you, or a friend, have questions about how to cope better with chronic illness, or have questions about available community resources, please contact Bev Wessels at (847) 588-8420.

847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

A person’s natural desire to remain independent when faced with physical changes may suddenly be questioned by concerned family members. Yet to encourage a person’s sense of hope about the future, it is critical to find creative ways to maintain as much independence as possible. Maybe that might involve family members sharing turns transporting a chronically-ill relative to a favorite club or other cherished activity. Maintaining familiar routines can be a source of joy when faced with the uncertainty of a new illness.

Members can register by mail or in person at the Senior Center beginning the second Tuesday of the mailing month. Non-member registration begins the third Tuesday of the mailing month. Early registration is encouraged as programs with insufficient registration may be cancelled. A wait list is started when a program reaches its maximum capacity. In the event of a cancellation, calls will be made to individuals on the wait list in numerical order. Refunds Programs cancelled by the NSC due to low enrollment, weather, or other scheduling conflicts, will be fully refunded. If a registrant cancels, refunds are given only if the Center can resell the ticket. Refunds will be credited to the individual account; checks are issued only upon request. Trip Cancellation Policy Fees for day trips are non-refundable within 10 working days of the trip if a replacement cannot be found. Please call and speak with a staff person and let them know you cannot attend the trip. We will do our best to find a replacement for you on the trip. If we are successful, you will be given a credit on your account or issued a refund check.
