Holiday Kindness From You to Another How can we keep holiday spirit alive in the New Year? As we head into 2016, we begin a new year filled with opportunity. Many of us take stock of what we want to achieve in the new year by making resolu ons. One popular resolu on is to get organized by cleaning out closets and ge ng rid of things we no longer use. Yet some of the items clu ering our closets and basements can be donated to charitable causes -- a great way to ring in the New Year. In addi on, some dona ons may be tax deduc ble.

More tradi onal contribu ons include clothing, household items, and books -- which can be donated to an array of organiza ons. Veteran Groups such as AMVETS and the Purple Heart accept dona ons, as do shelters such as WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger) and social service groups such as the Salva on Army. In addi on, your dona ons of used furniture can be donated to H.O.M.E. (Housing Opportuni es and Maintenance for the Elderly), which will arrange for pick-up and distribu on to Chicago area seniors.

Hunger con nues to affect families coping with stress and financial challenges. Dona ons of nonperishable food in cans, containers and boxes can make a big difference in the lives of others. Niles Family Service, as well as Maine and Niles townships, maintain emergency food pantries that can accept these dona ons. Finally, volunteering me may be one of the most appreciated and valued contribu ons that many of us will make. Delivering meals or visi ng homebound seniors are just some of the ways to share your me with other seniors in our community. Please call Bev Wessels at (847) 588-8420 with any ques ons about ways you can make a difference.

847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

For example, did you know that it’s possible to donate a used car to a charity and get a tax deduc on? In addi on, pickup and towing costs to remove the vehicle are o en covered by the contribu on. The Vehicle Dona on Program directs the funds it collects from auto dona ons to American Lung Associa on programs. Another program through America’s Car Dona on Chari es Center allows people to select which charity their auto will benefit. For example, the United Way and the Alzheimer’s Associa on are just some of the many organiza ons which benefit from the program.

Health care items are other useful items to consider giving. The Lions of Illinois Founda on recycles used eyeglasses (the glasses are refurbished and sent to needy areas outside of the United States). Also, the Starkey Hearing Founda on’s Hear Now program collects donated hearing aids that are recycled for people with financial need.
