Nightclub in the Afternoon with Kym Frankovelgia Kym Frankovelgia returns to the NSC to entertain us with her vocals. Menu to be announced. Friday, Dec 1 • 12:00-2:00pm • $10M/$15NM WWII Christmas Miracle Luncheon with Rochelle Pennington Rochelle Pennington's "World War I Christmas Miracle" program is based on the true story included in her book, Christmas Gifts: Ten of the Greatest Ever Given. Her program draws directly from the written memories of those soldiers who participated in the events of Christmas 1914 while celebrating the great holiday with their "former enemies." It is estimated that 100,000 soldiers experienced the unofficial "Christmas Truce" which spanned hundreds of miles along the trenches of the Western Front in Europe. Some truces were initiated by soldiers "gifting" their enemies opposite to them a song, while other truces began when candlelit Christmas trees appeared along the German trenches. In some places the truce was started when brave soldiers appeared unarmed in No Man's Land (the area between the trenches where serving soldiers were dug in for protection). Many truces began on Christmas Eve, while others commenced on Christmas Day. Pennington's program will detail the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the war "miraculously" halting at Christmas. The author will share vintage photographs of soldiers exchanging gifts with one another, as well as photographs of Christmas trees on the battlefield lit with candles. She will also share diary entries, letters home, and newspaper articles. In addition, the author will bring authentic World War I battlefield artifacts with her including items exchanged between the British, Scottish, German, and French troops. Lunch will include a BLT sandwich, coleslaw and dessert. Monday, Dec 11 • 11:00am-1:00pm • $9M/$13.50NM

Managing Change and Loss During the Holidays

Social Services

The pressure to celebrate and be happy during the holidays is strong. Around us we see media images of families together, festive parties and a New Year promising joy and new beginnings Coping with the death of loved ones can add great sadness and stress to the holidays. There are, however, additional losses that can make the holiday season far from happy. For people coping with loss, there can be pressure to keep up with the family and social demands of the holidays. Some of the changes and losses that people cope with during the holidays include: ● Out-of-State family or friends. It can be hard to be far away from the people you care about. Out-of-State family visits, however, can create pressure to catch up, entertain and “be happy.” ● Living alone may create additional pressure to determine what groups or occasions to consider. Isolation may also be a factor that makes the holidays hard to cope with. ● Changes in living situation and moving can be stressful, whether the move is to a condo, in with family, or to a retirement community. Adding a move to the holiday season can create anxiety or stress as the person adjusts to new surroundings. Moving is an emotional task on its own, involving sorting through the pictures, possessions and the treasures of life. Deciding what to keep, sell or donate can be overwhelming. ● Changes in health, emotional coping, friendships or social connections can make it challenging to plan holiday events while also conserving energy. ● Changes in the ability or energy to entertain can complicate family traditions. Family members may want to be more involved, yet it can be difficult to have discussions about who will cook a new dish or offer to host family events. ● Family conflict. No family is perfect, and the holidays can create pressure to get along or mend troubled relationships. Coping effectively during the holidays requires balancing self-care needs with the expectations of others. Some of the strategies recommended by the Mayo Clinic (“Tips to Prevent Holiday Stress and Depression”) include:

847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Acknowledging feelings. Reaching out to friends, family, community, or possibly a faith community to reduce isolation. Focusing on the reality of the season. The holidays don’t have to be perfect. Consider what traditions to keep and other ways to celebrate that may be a better fit. Setting aside differences if possible. If you find yourself in problematic situations, consider ways to have alternate get-togethers with friends or family you are close with. Sticking to budgets for gift giving and celebrations. Learning to say no to requests from friends, family, faith community, volunteer work, or employers. Maintaining as many healthy eating and lifestyle changes as possible during the holidays. Taking a breather. Allow time for rest, relaxation or reflection. Consider counseling support from a licensed professional therapist.

New Program in 2018! In early 2018, the senior social work department will launch a Dinner and Discussion Group focusing on managing loss and change. While the group will support people coping with grief and bereavement, we welcome participants managing other types of loss. Some examples of issues we will cover include: moving, changes in health or mobility, changes in relationships with friends and family, and adapting to living alone or with others. This program will be held at the Senior Center. Look for more information soon! Please call Melanie Amin, Senior Social Work Coordinator at (847) 588-8475 if you have concerns about managing holiday stress or to discuss social work support, programs and services.

Giving Opportunities

Niles Family Services Food Pantry The Niles Family Services Food Pantry provides Niles residents with a monthly and emergency food pantry. Please recognize your ability to make a positive impact in someone else's life. If you have a donation of food, paper goods, infant items or toiletries, you can conveniently drop them off at the NSC and help the familes in our community.

US Marine Corps Reserve/Village of Niles Annual Toys for Tots Drive For several years, the Village of Niles has partnered with the local US Marine Corps Reserve with collecting toys for children in need. The goal is that every child gets a new toy this Christmas season. Through the Toys for Tots program, thousands of children in Illinois and hundreds of children in our own community received a brand new toy, whereas without this program, it may not have been possible. Holidays were made brighter for these youngsters, and this is where you can help this holiday season. A Toys for Tots drop off box will be located in the lobby of the NSC through the middle of December. All toys must be brand new, never used and unwrapped. Thank you for giving back.
