Hispanic Heritage Month Trip - Humboldt Park (Heavy walking; 3-4 city blocks with rest) Come explore Humboldt Park, home to Chicago’s largest Puerto Rican population. With streets that are decorated in vibrant murals and air that smells of carne guisada, Humboldt Park is a Caribbean escape shrouded in urban charm. Our first stop will be to the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture for a self-guided tour of the exhibits. Then we will have an authentic lunch at a neighborhood restaurant where you may have the choice of one of the following: bistec enceballado (steak with sautéed onions), lechon (roasted pork), or carne guisada (beef stew), along with arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), salad, plantain, and beverage. After lunch, we will visit Humboldt Park’s monuments and public art displays that were designed to celebrate Puerto Rican heritage. And since no trip is complete without dessert, we will make a bakery visit before we head back. Walking is at participants’ discretion. Welcome Back Melanie Amin! I am so happy to be back! Thanks to the staff and residents who have welcomed me back to the Niles Senior Center! Most recently, I was social services supervisor at AMITA Alexian Brothers Hospice. The senior center, however, has always felt like home to me. I completed my graduate school social work internship at the Niles Senior Center, and I worked here as part-time social worker from 2001 – 2009. My social work experience includes work in public housing, a skilled nursing facility, a partial hospitalization program, and as a home health social worker. I have also facilitated caregiving and bereavement groups and presentations. I worked as a journalist and editor before I became a social worker, and I loved writing about music, bands and personal interest stories. I am very passionate about issues related to loss, grief and health. All our social workers offer counseling and case management services – but sometimes you might just have a basic question you want to ask. You can reach me directly and confidentially at 847-5888475. I spend my free time with my husband, our 14-year old daughter, and our mischievous cats. I love music, current events, and reading. I live in Arlington Heights and I grew up in Glenview. I look forward to hearing from you! It is good to be back at the Niles Senior Center! Melanie Amin, Senior Social Work Coordinator
