Focused On Growth Vision Mission About the Organization
Minority-owned businesses thrive in our increasingly diverse and growing community. To create meaningful partnerships between corporate members and NMSDC certified minority-owned businesses that maximize mutual success. The Tri-State Minority Supplier Development Council, formerly the Kentuckiana Minority Business Council, was founded in 1984 to expand business opportunities for minority-owned companies; to encourage mutually beneficial economic links between minority suppliers and the public and private sectors; and to help build a stronger, more equitable society by supporting and promoting minority business development. The Council is one of 37 affiliate councils of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), and continues to be in full compliance with the standards of affiliation.

Focused On Growth Dear Members, Clients and Friends, 2010 began with great optimism for a recovering economy and a trend of growth for TSMSDC’s corporate members and MBE clients. We were not disappointed as we witnessed the beginning of a turnaround that signaled better days ahead. Through the dedication of our corporate members and committed MBE suppliers, new growth opportunities continued to become available last year. Our thanks to all firms contributing to the advancement of Supplier Diversity—your support strengthens both our organization and our region as well as encourages entrepreneurism and economic development. Our parent organization, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), experienced growth and change in 2010. Joset B. Wright, Esq. was named NMSDC President, succeeding Harriet Michel who led the organization for 22 years. Marquis Miller was named Vice President-Field Operations, completing the new leadership team. The NMSDC network is fortunate to have two outstanding leaders with successful professional experience in both the corporate and non-profit sectors. The work of advancing Supplier Diversity is often carried out quietly without much public acknowledgement, but that does not take away from its importance or power. Supplier Diversity will always be a vital business initiative and TSMSDC remains committed to ensuring minority-owned firms are actively participating in corporate and government procurement opportunities. I believe the road ahead holds great promise for TSMSDC. On behalf of our staff, Board of Directors and MBE Input Committee, we thank our constituents for a successful year. We are made strong by the company we keep and that includes all of you. Sincerely,
Ty Gettis President & CEO

Focused On Growth Highlights and Accomplishments 2010 was one of the most challenging years in recent times for the Tri-State Minority Supplier Development Council (TSMSDC), as it was for many in our region and across the country. Economic uncertainty impacted our organization along with our corporate members and MBEs as well as our colleagues at the National Minority Supplier Development Council. TSMSDC ended 2010 on a favorable note, however, thanks to corporate partners renewing their memberships and MBE firms renewing their certifications. We could not and would not have made it through 2010 without their dedication to the cause of supplier diversity and our commitment to reducing costs in all departments.
Events & Activities • Kentucky welcomed Alltech FEI The World Equestrian Games to Lexington last year, bringing the world-class event to the United States for the first time. TSMSDC worked with event representatives to ensure regional MBEs were included in opportunities with the games.
Another new BOF component was an expanded educational seminar agenda, sponsored by Toyota and hosted on the afternoon preceding the opening reception. Honda America sponsored the BOF Luncheon with keynote speaker, Dr. Melvin Gravely, who held the audience spellbound with his disclosures of real world supplier diversity experiences and realities.
• To address questions regarding federal stimulus dollars and minority participation in stimulus projects, TSMSDC brought together state and Louisville Metro Government representatives to provide MBEs with the facts regarding spending in Kentucky and share information on registration requirements for suppliers.
• Another new program in 2010 was the Yum! Brands “A.M. Energizer” series to help new and prospective corporate members develop Supplier Diversity programs. Kristen Staab, TSMSDC board member and Yum! employee, facilitated the event.
• TSMSDC took a look forward at our 2010 Business Opportunity Fair, held at the Kentucky Exposition Center and Fairgrounds and entitled “The Future is Now – Are you Ready?” Humana and Levy Electrical and Plumbing Supply were Title Sponsors of the event which featured a first-ever Technology Café. Industry group clusters on the trade show floor allowed related businesses to display in common areas.
• In the fall, we successfully conducted our annual Buyer-Seller Business Networking Summit and we thank the BrownForman Corporation for their support as Title Sponsor. • Our 2010 event calendar concluded with the 2010 Annual Meeting and Agave Awards, held at the Kentucky Derby Museum. The evening featured award presentations to many of our corporate members and MBEs and a record amount raised by the silent auction on behalf of the TSMSDC MBE scholarship program.
‘
• We conducted “Making it Happen” networking and “How To Do Business With Us” sessions with the Louisville Regional Airport Authority and LG&E and KU Services Company. LG&E took the extra step of providing our MBEs with an extensive list of needed products and services to alert them to potential opportunities. They also had buyers on site to talk directly with MBE suppliers.

Focused On Growth Educational Initiatives
Strategic Partnerships
One of TSMSDC’s strategic objectives for 2010 was to improve our educational programs and utilize resources to help develop MBE suppliers.
Our outreach efforts into West Virginia, Lexington (Kentucky), Northern Kentucky, Southern Indiana and other communities in the TSMSDC coverage area continues as we work pro-actively with our Community Partners including:
• On January 14, 2010, we launched the NMSDC/TSMSDC Centers of Excellence Program. This two-year program allows corporations to mentor MBE suppliers, share best practices and assist in building capacity for expanded procurement opportunities. We thank Toyota, the Brown-Forman Corporation, Jefferson County Public Schools, Kentucky State Government, Toyota Boshoku and Honda for their participation in the COE by identifying a minimum of two MBE suppliers for mentoring. We have 14 MBE firms actively participating in the COE. • Educational scholarships were awarded to three of TSMSDC’s MBEs in 2010: o Kofi Frempong, Martin Construction, attended the Kellogg School for Advanced Management at Northwestern University o Stacey Wade, NIMBUS, Inc., attended the Tuck School at Dartmouth o Tawana Bain, New Age Communications, attended the Tuck School at Dartmouth Scholarships are funded by silent auction funds but they are often not enough. We thank Brown-Forman for providing scholarships to help augment our program.
• Greater Louisville Inc. • Commerce Lexington • Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce • Charleston (West Virginia) Area Alliance • The Governor’s Office of Economic Empowerment • Louisville Urban League • African-American Business Alliance • Hispanic Latino Business Council • Louisville Enterprise Group • One Southern Indiana We appreciate the support of these and many other effective organizations in helping TSMSDC leverage resources and provide needed services to our constituents.

Annual Meeting and Agave Awards - This event brings CEOs, buyers, senior management, minority business entrepreneurs and others together to recognize corporations and minorityowned businesses that have excelled in our region. It also recognizes individuals who play a key role in our community and who display their commitment to quality diversity and multi-cultural teamwork.

Buyer - Seller Networking Classic - This annual event is designed to provide a great opportunity to network while enjoying a great activity in an informal setting. In recognition of the economy, we held the Networking Classic at a public golf course in Louisville for a second year. This change of venue allowed us to significantly reduce pricing, which permitted many of our MBEs and Corporate Members to participate.
Making It Happen - This quarterly event allows corporate members to meet a variety of MBEs and communicate their particular requirements and needs. Particularly popular with MBEs, it allows entrepreneurs an opportunity to gain pertinent information from the decision makers of a corporation and gives them an inside track on upcoming needs in goods and services.
NMSDC Annual Conference and Business Opportunity Fair Hosted by NMSDC each October, this is the nation’s premier conference and trade show and a true benchmark forum for corporate representatives and MBE representatives. At this year’s event, held in Miami, participants attended a 600-booth trade show, numerous workshops that answered questions and allowed fresh opportunities, networked with thousands of people, and socialized at numerous receptions. The culmination of the event was the Awards Program which recognized AT&T as the Corporation of the Year.
