EDITORIAL Philippines not prepared by Cee Gee Doltz Bacud

K-12 is a new law approved by the congress. It enhances the educational system of our country, but it increases high school by two years. We doubt on that certain law. What about the poor people who are living below the poverty line of this country? What about unprepared teachers who taught children in a far away places for a living? Remember that children go to school sometimes, with only their slippers, sandos and shorts. The parents of the poor children do not have enough budget for sending their child for ten years in the elementary level. With that, they shall work double time to get their children to a simple or an extravagant school. Yes, we agree that we, Filipinos, love education, but how about the farmers working for their children to go to school? And also the fishermen who have to double their catch to sustain their family’s needs and let their children go to school. So, ten years is too short for the government. But the poor found it too long. How about twelve years in elementary and highschool level? Will that really do later on. Will this change ever make us look back at our achievements as worthwhile? Although it has only been approved, we have yet to know if this program shall help our country exceed in terms of education, and most importantly, the way it can form our economy in the future, with more educated individuals, who have undergone the program, running it. I truly hope that eventhough we have yet to see the results, the Philippines shall learn from past mistakes and past leaders and move forward. Let’s make it a point that K-12 is not just a desperate act to try and improve our economy. We have to think about the future --- the development of the youth.
