a breathing landscape
2
Fascinated with the movement of water, the design team selected a plot in an area that experiences the dynamic push and pull of tides and waves in a unique place: the Sundarbans in the west bay of Bengal, the world’s largest mangrove forest.

“Man masters nature not by force, but by understanding.” –Jacob Bronowski
4
Taking inspiration f rom the most important elements of the site, the design team uses a combination of structure and voids to embrace and contain the landscape. Modules are
equipped with flexible openings, floating platforms plugged into a stable and f ixed bamboo structure, and optimally oriented sloped roof for function, comfort, and safety.
5
ins, outs & in-betweens The approach to architecture is sensitive to the elements. It considers lessons f rom the past whilst taking a step forward into the future, being keenly aware of the changes and challenges that lay ahead. 4

#fromwhereistand The project is designed for a family of six: grandparents, parents, and children. The three generations live in harmony in a house composed of three clusters, each with particular characteristics and atmospheres within this mythological nature. Together, they experience inf inite possibilites, paths, textures and sensations in this playful, amphibious, and resilient structure.
9
inter-connection Cluster 01 The exploration starts by unraveling the paths that can be taken in the project. In this entrance cluster, that faces the street, a strong and multi scale interconnection is def ined between nature and the users and the users and the community. The curiosity will be the guide through this journey ...

antidotes to boredom
The question of circulation– regardless of environmental condition– is answered with a dynamic array of options: a spirited entrance stair, pulleys for utility, flexstep stairs connecting the entirety of the multi-level structure, and rope ladders for the children.

family as roots Cluster 02
Drifting through the structure, the second cluster, that faces the river, emerges as the core of the house. Coziness and sharing pulsate as the most remarkable feelings and translate the essence of the project: family as our main root

enclosed, rigid & stable The modules are designed in order to be an in and out. Enclosed, rigid and stable, but also open, flexible and dynamic. The openings enhance the idea of outside in through its different typologies, integrating the exterior and interior in a functional and practical way. The furniture follows the same criteria of being an integral part of the design, folding and unfolding according to the necessity.

(be) longing Cluster 03 Arriving in the more intimate spaces, the deepest relationships are revealed. The third cluster, that faces the mangroves, is a place of immersion. The movement is of going out to get in your inner self. Strong, solid and rooted connections like this are rare, the feeling is of belonging.

the shape of light As the viewer steps inside the modules, they can explore deeper the sensations that the different openings offer in each unit of the house, a variation f rom direct to indirect light according to the unfolding mobiliary. Here logic is translated into spirit, the lights are in the thickness.
