PARAMETRIC OR DIRECT MODELING?
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PARAMETRIC MODELING?
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF PARAMETRIC MODELING?
Parametric modeling brings engineers many advantages. For instance, once you have made a part that will be used in many models, then the part can be archived so that in the future it can be recalled rather than remodeled. And, because it is possible to embed intelligence with a design, it allows engineers to pass this design intelligence to other engineers throughout the lifecycle of the product.
But, it hasn’t all been positive. The way that these constraints work is that they often have references that can work against each other. While this can empower a lot of intelligence in a design and in a model, it can also prove to be restrictive. For instance, a change to a feature very early on in the model can have a dramatic effect on the subsequent features. Sometime the unintended effects can even cause a model to fail.
With a parametric approach, it is possible to add constraints to parts, meaning that they cannot be altered by mistake later on in the design process. In other words, constraints are a way of ensuring that any modifications made to the design are done so with design intent in mind.
There is a real challenge here. Sometimes, you follow some very strict rules and paths, where the restrictions work well. But, other times you want to freedom to explore design options more freely. This is where the restrictions can be limiting. These constraints can slow down the innovation process and even force engineers to have to recreate parts of a model because of a failure.

ETH Zurich Uses Robots To Construct Three-Story Timber-Framed House Researchers from ETH Zurich are using a new method for digital timber construction in a real project for the first time. The load-bearing timber modules, which are prefabricated by robots, will be assembled on the top two floors at the DFAB HOUSE construction site. The Spatial Timber Assemblies project combines architecture with robotics and craftsmanship.

BIM as a collaborative method Recognition of BIM’s requires going deeper into the organization as well as project management activities. A measurable, structured approach to project workflow and information flow based on the availability of up-to-date and shared information, must drive for the restructuring of digitally-supported processes and procedures.
BIM has opened up endless possibilities for improved efficiency.
However, without the correct understanding of technology and its workflows, very little can be gained.
As the complexity of projects increase, it becomes more challenging to design, build, and coordinate a project that can be ready for construction.
As a result, thousands of issues need to be communicated, tracked, and solved.

Whether you need to retrofit, refurbish, or simply do routine maintenance on an existing building, 3D laser scanning can deliver a full, more accurate picture of parts or entire structures much faster than traditional surveying. A 3D laser scan can help reverse engineer objects without the cycles of trial and error that are normally a drag on such projects.

By measuring one data point at a time, 3D laser scanners create a “point cloud, which can be loaded into modelling software to show what new additions would look like laid over an existing structure. These models can be loaded into virtual and augmented reality headsets that workers wear as they build, giving them an interactive blueprint to assist in their task.
