Fishing refugia were designed and agreed upon by residents of the communities that fish in the area, based on their empirical knowledge and their management and conservation priorities. These refugia (both nationally and internationally) are considered potentially an effective management tool that allows sustainable use of marine resources, and offers protection to their critical habitat.

Everyone can and should report illegal activities. However, enforcement and legal follow through is carried out by an officer of CONAPESCA (National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries) with support of a local community enforcement council. Compliance and surveillance is everyone’s responsibility for the fishing refugia to be successful. Complaints: (612)123 6090 ext. 72239

A network of eleven fishing refugia was established in the marine coastal Corridor San Cosme – Punta Coyote, BCS, Mexico, totaling less than 1% of the total fishing area. This network was established to contribute to the restoration and development of fisheries resources, as well as to protect the critical habitat and ecosystems essential to those species¹,².

Brown seaweed that flourish in Punta Coyote serve as natural nurseries for commercially important species. This site was subject to destructive and illegal fishing activities; the refuge zone is trying to restore the essential habitat.

Northern San Francisquito refugia was created to recuperate commercial fish populations, which were subject to intensive fishing practices in the past.
