SOCAL’S HOMEGROWN ARTISTS In the veins of Southern California lies a music culture that has effected the entire nation. Be it the rock stylings of Jane’s Addiction, the global star power of No Doubt, or the cult following of Social Distortion, Southern California flows with music. With endless options to choose from, NiteGuide has highlighted artists from our favorite regions. By Heidi Darby

Avenged Sevenfold
Stone Temple Pilots
Forming in Huntington beach in 1999, their most recent album Nightmare debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. This was the first album recorded after the untimely death of drummer James “The Rev” Sullivan. The band has received great commercial and critical success, receiving “Best Vocalist,” “Best Guitarist,” and “Best Album of The Year” from Metal Hammer’s Golden God Awards.
STP was an integral part of the 90’s, releasing four albums including their highly regarded debut Core in 1992. Earning devout followers throughout the last two decades, the drama surrounding the group failed to deter fans. With the release of their self-titled album in 2010, Stone Temple Pilots perseveres as one of San Diego’s most influential rock bands.
Ozomatli
Steve Aoki
Unwritten Law
Defying the mainstream, Ozomatli thrives through a multi-cultural sound, and serves as a voice of the citizens of Los Angeles. On April 23, 2010, they were awarded their own “Ozomatli Day” by the city of Los Angeles for their efforts in the community. With the unique blend of urban-latino with funk and raga, it’s no surprise Ozomatli has two headlining Hollywood Bowl shows under their belts.
Producer/DJ Steve Aoki has generated an impressive buzz around SoCal through his various contributions to the music scene. His label DIM MAK Records has been credited for sparking the careers of Bloc Party, The Kills, The Gossip, and MSTRKRFT. He’s produced endless remixes and collaborations, and lends his musical prowess to the Pacific Festival: OC for it’s second consecutive year, featuring headliner Snoop Dog.
United out of San Diego County via Poway, the boys of Unwritten Law took their pop-punk sound to the masses with their single “Seein Red.” The group released their latest album Swan in March after a six year hiatus. Opening in the past for influential bands including the Sex Pistols and Authority Zero, they’re now leading the charge on this years Warped Tour.
Incubus
Thrice
Slightly Stoopid
Technically forming in Calabasas, the group continues to operate out of LA with great success. The ever evolving music of Incubus has led to seven studio albums and countless gigs, ranging from early career Ozzfest dates, to years of headlining tours. Now out on the road in support of their latest album, If Not Now, When?, Incubus’ music continues to flourish.
Thrice has carved out a name for themselves, and defied being easily placed into a specific genre. With seven studio albums to their name, the group pushes their creative boundries through varying time signatures and concept ideas. With proceeds of every album released going to charity, the Irvine natives are gearing up for a tour in support of their album Major/Minor, due out September 20.
Slightly Stoopid was born out of SoCal skate punk culture, and grew into champions of feelgood reggae rock. Discovered by the late Bradley Nowelll (Sublime) while still in high school, some of the groups best work has been done acoustically. Now operating with their own label, Stoopid Records, Slightly Stoopid creates a vibe that mirrors the attitude of San Diego.
Rage Against The Machine Arguably the greatest band to come out of Los Angeles, the momentum of RATM refuses to slow. After reuniting for a legendary headlining set at Coachella 2007, the group continues to make musical and political waves with shows such as LA Rising, and appears stronger than ever. Though their first impromptu show took place in Orange County, Los Angeles proudly claims ownership of the group.

Lissie Threading soulful vocals, country undertone, and pop savvy, Lissie creates an intriguing and refreshing folk sound. After touring with great success in Europe, the Illinois native hit multiple festival dates this summer and continues to tour in support of her debut full length album Catching A Tiger. Now based in California, Lissie and her backing band continue to capture the attention of both music fans and critics.
The Sheepdogs An unlikely success story in the making, The Sheepdogs have brought their full bodied 70’s panache to the people, receiving attention after their run on Rolling Stone’s “You Choose” cover contest. Hailing from Saskatoon, Canada, these four shaggy-haired boys from the north bring a nostalgic groove back to rock and roll.
J. Cole In the the world of hip hop, J. Cole’s musical stylings set him above many of his more successful contemporaries. Though his lyric’s have room to mature, his talents were striking enough to catch the eye of Jay-Z, who signed him as the first artist to his Roc Nation label. His album Cole World: The Sideline Story, produced in part by Cole, is due out in September.
The New Limb These Southern California darlings make harmonies sweet as honey, and possess a charm sticky with sass. Their layered style and intelligent use of instruments on their album Sounds People Can Hear make them a band worth listening to. Fusing elements of indie pop with 60’s flair, The New Limb are turning out to be a worthwhile extremity.

Now host of two highly successful podcasts, his “Doug Loves Movies” podcast revolves around the film industry. On “The Benson Interruption” guests perform their stand up routines with Benson seated in his throne on stage with them, interrupting at any moment he deems appropriate. Formerly on Comedy Central, the podcast version offers greater freedom. “TV you have to answer to a lot of people, there’s a lot of collaboration, for good or for bad. My podcast is just me doing my thing, unedited and uncut. That freedom is exhilarating. But don’t get me wrong, I love being on television and in movies. I’m working on another documentary right now, which will come out sometime next year. I hope.” When asked if there was anything his fans should know about him, he replied, “I have a new CD coming out on August 1 called POTTY MOUTH. You probably meant something personal? I can catch 35 quarters off my elbow. You’re welcome.” Catch Doug in all his glory on August 21, at The Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana.

Growing up in San Diego, Benson shares that he played the role of outcast more than class clown. “I liked making people laugh, but they’d mostly think my jokes were weird. I thought it was funny to trip on purpose in front of everyone, but all the cool kids saw was a nerd tripping. I wasn’t even good at being a nerd though - my grades were terrible!”

“A lot of dudes will say something like ‘Oh you’re one of my favorite chick rockers!’ They say it like they’ve got their regular record collection, and then they’ve got their girl record collection, you know what I mean? I don’t like that. I think it should all be one thing. Music is music.”

We brainstormed, because they wanted to get me a keyboard that was as loud as I am, because I’m a pretty loud mother fucker,” Grace says. “We wanted to find a keyboard that had a lot of dimension, and the B3 is an exceptionally dynamic instrument. You can make it sound like a single flute, like John Paul Jones does on Led Zepplin songs, or you can make it sound like a huge brass choir. There’s so many opportunities to manipulate the sound and tone of a Hammond B3.” With founding members Tournet and Burr, the group added bassist Catherine Popper and rhythm guitarist Benny Yurco in 2009. The five bandmates released the their self titled album Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, to great critical acclaim, debuting at #19 on the Billboard 200 chart. Though this was the groups third studio album, it was the first with the current lineup. During their collective ten years as a band, music festivals initially provided the Vermont natives with the platform necessary to reach the masses. After countless festival appearances, GPN performed on the prestigious main stage at The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in June, and headlines both nights of their self-constructed Grand Point North Festival. Their hard earned success brings validation to the group, and allows room to acknowledge the benefits of being a

While opening for Kenny Chesney at the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Chesney brought them out during his set to jam with classic rock icon Joe Walsh, of The Eagles. Without enough room to bring their instruments back on stage with them, Grace and her band improvised. “There we were, with nothing to play, and he brings Joe Walsh out. We didn’t want to just stand there, clapping our hands, so he got all five Nocturnals with pots and pans and wooden spoons, playing the shit out of them onstage at Red Rocks, like a bunch of assholes. It was so much fun! Probably one of the best things we’ve ever done,” Grace shared.

T
he first time I heard Amy Winehouse, I’d stumbled across her doing an acoustic version of “Valerie” on YouTube. I’d looked her up after seeing her name in
tiny print at the bottom of the Coachella 2007 lineup poster. To say that I was intrigued would be an understatement. This was just as “Rehab” started creeping onto the radio, and it wouldn’t be long before Amy moved from little known singer to full blown pop wonder.
After hearing the album Back To Black, I was instantly mesmerized, and my intrigue from the YouTube footage was validated. The heartbreak of the title track was both gripping and cathartic. The taunting of “You Know I’m No Good” was soulful and sexy. The album in it’s entirety was of a caliber I hadn’t experienced in years. What makes Amy’s work even more impressive, is the fact that she was a songwriter. One of our few pop culture phenomenons that created, instead of interpreted. I had the opportunity to attend Coachella that year, and Amy was high on my priority list. I wish I could say that her performance moved me as much as her album, but Amy had already entered into the lifestyle that would be her eventual demise. Unable to finish her cover of Lauryn Hill’s “That Thing,” her back up singers finished the tune for her. There were glimmering moments of greatness in her performance that hot April afternoon. The unfortunate reality is that her future artistic contributions must go unrealized. Truly a gift, To find more music releases, Log onto www.metacritic.com

Paving the way for House Music Domination
T
he EC Twins have become two of the electronic music world’s most influential pioneers, ground breaking performers, and beloved DJ’s. They’ve spun everywhere from the most underground nightclubs in the world, to the biggest festivals nationwide. It was our pleasure to catch up with them at TAO beach as they played the Official Electric Daisy Carnival Pool Party. They opened for the incredible Trance group Above & Beyond here and had two DJ sets at EDC itself. “We’re tired of opening for the big guys, when’s our big break coming?” They exclaimed and laughed as they introduced themselves. Marc and Allister Blackham began their careers in the House Music scene at the mere age of 16 in Edinburgh, Scotland. “You know in Scotland there really isn’t much to do but go to pubs. We were tired of going out and ending up in brawls. We weren’t much for fighting so we longed for a place to go out where we could enjoy a drink and not have to worry about getting into trouble,” said Marc in his incredibly cute accent. “We ended up at a gay bar one night and had a blast! The best part was the music, that’s when we fell in love with House,” chimed in Allister. With such a passion in his face I knew we shared the same love for the music. At the time only gay bars and clubs were playing electronic music, but they wanted to share House Music with everyone. So they launched Eye Candy, the city’s most successful club. At Eye Candy it didn’t matter if you were gay or straight, everyone enjoyed House Music together. “In 2005 we got the crazy idea to share our love for House Music with America, Los Angeles to be exact,” said Marc as he takes off his signature fedora hat. “We went to every club in LA and said we want to throw a House night and everyone looked at us and laughed in our faces!” They were persistent though, making their own CD’s and handing them out on the streets for people to listen. “We spent all our life savings into clubs here. We were broke and homeless, but when we felt like giving up we just went back to the music. We believed in it so much that it kept us going,” shares Allister as he wraps his arms around his shirtless body. It’s that passion for the music that shines through in their energetic performances, play worthy remixes and events they are a part of. It’s no question why The EC Twins have residencies in every major club and city in the US including Marquee in Las Vegas, Lavo in New York, Liv in Miami, and Enclave in Chicago. They are where they are today because they have played a pivotal role in the rise of Electronic Music from behind the scenes, but they are ready to take center stage and shine just like the rest of the major House DJ’s and producers. “It’s not as easy when your daddy doesn’t own an island and can put your music in the hands of the right people,” says Allister. “We’ve had to work our asses off to get the notoriety that we have today. Sometimes we still look in the mirror and say when will we make it”? They may not think they have made it yet, but with their unique sound and awesome remixes like Dirty Vegas’ “Little White Doves” and a résumé as extensive as theirs, and proven that not only are they here to stay but will continue to influence the Electronic Music scene for years to come. They’ve made it big in our book!

ELECTRONIC SCENE JuJu Beats
Oak Canyon Ranch [Silverado, CA] Story by Alejandra Loera | Photos courtesy of Pluelife.com | Kiwi
The creators of the original electronic outdoor music experience, B3 Cande and Motive Events (who throw 420 Fest among other music festivals) joined forces this year to bring back the infamous Juju Beats at Oak Canyon Park. The 20 minute drive into the parking lot was dark and serene, but as we made our way down the mysterious path we could finally hear the electrifying house sound. The “Fantasy Forest” stage was right in the middle and hosted legendary names like Jason Blakemore along with fresh names like Starkillers. The crowd was here to escape and get away from the usual club, bar or house party and to feel as if in a far off destination with their favorite music. It was the craziest sight to see massively constructed stages in the middle of the woods. When I arrived Jelo was on the main stage. His progressive house sound resonated throughout the wilderness. On the Bumblebee Love Swarm stage the legendary Doc Martin was playing his original House beats. The night was made when Charles Feelgood played an energetic funky house set, even playing an Amy Winehouse song as a tribute to the late artist. This event gave true testament that it doesn’t matter how big or small the party is, if we all love the music, all we need is the speakers and each other.

JULY IN REVIEW: FEATURED EVENTS The Orange county Kush Expo Anaheim Convention Center [Anaheim]
Story by Alejandra Loera | Photography by Tristan Copeland The 2nd Annual Kush Expo is a Medical Marijuana Show at the Anaheim Convention Center. I am not going to lie, as a non marijuana smoker it was quite the experience. The entire room was filled with all sorts of booths with any type of Marijuana accessory one can possibly think of. For only $20 at the door, guests had access to dispensaries, hydroponics, vaporizers, growth experts, equipment, nutrients and anything Marijuana related. Attendees could even get a medical Marijuana prescription for $40 and join the non-tobacco smoking patio. The live music, food and beverage vendors kept goers entertained. Not to mention all the hot promotion models for various different organizations. Dania Estrada, the NiteGuide June issue featured Go-Go, was signing copies of the issue at the NiteGuide booth. She was also a contestant in the Hot Kush Girl Contest, and took home 1st Place! Everyone 18+ came dressed in their favorite Marijuana adorned outfits proving how large the Medical Marijuana community really is. On Friday the Best Artist Marijuana Music Award winner Mystic Roots Band performed and got the crowd really going and having a great time. With hundreds of booths who gave tons of giveaways, The OC Kush Expo can say it is the biggest Medical Marijuana show in Orange County. The resting lounge even had a full liquor bar and massage chairs to indulge in, making it a very informative yet fun event for all Marijuana connoisseurs.
Counquer the Dada at Sutra Sutra [Costa Mesa]
Story by Alejandra Loera | Photos courtesy of rukes.com If you have not unleashed the Dada in your life yet, then we highly suggest it! Sutra had one of its most impressive evenings yet on July 17th when Dada Life took center stage for the second time this year. With now an even bigger following of fans and more produced singles under their belt this sold out event was one for the books. Dada Life has come a long way from when they last performed at Sutra. Their bananas and champagne gimmick has spread like wildfire and this time not only did they walk in with an array of giant inflatable champagne bottles, but a bunch of the partygoers themselves were dressed up as giant bananas! After making their grand entrance the crowd went wild with excitement as they shook the roof off the entire building. Their energy was electrifying and not one single person in the entire club was just standing or sitting. Everyone was jumping up and down with excitement dancing to their incredible electro inspired style. Bottles of booze kept overflowing everyone’s drinks and champagne was sprayed all over the crowd by Stefan and Olle. These guys played banging songs with incredible remixes like Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” which they changed the lyrics to say, “Push me and then just touch me, till I can get my Dada Life!” They have proven themselves to be not only one of the most talented EDM duos out right now, but also the most exciting to see live. 36 niteguidemag.com
Liquid Aloha Music Festival
Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort [Newport Beach] Story Alejandra Loera & Photography by Celia Lira On August 23rd the Newport Beach Dunes turned into an island oasis as the Liquid Aloha Music Festival took place from 3-6pm. For only $5 Hawaiian lovers got to indulge in 16 ounce pours of Kona Brewing’s Longboard Island Lager, Fine Rock Pale Ale, and the sweet Wailua Wheat on draught. Food trucks from Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and TK Burger kept guests well feed all day in the sunny Orange County waterfront. Vendors of all sorts were selling everything from eco friendly bikinis, surfboards, iPod music playing fanny packs and LED light beer pong tables. There were even paddle board rides available for guests to tread out into the water. All day festival goers were enjoying the sun as they drank amazing beer, mingled with old and new friends, ate great food and listened to some amazing live entertainment. When star of the show Matt Costa came on, the crowd was either dancing away in front of the stage or sprawled out in blankets or lawn chairs in the grass enjoying his laidback soothing voice and sound. The Newport Dunes was a beautiful location for such an event. As the sun set across the marina couples began to cozy up with one another as the cold yet inviting chill of the evening broke. The beers kept pouring all night and even after Costa’s awesome performance, the crowd was yearning for more. The upbeat Kalama Brothers took center stage playing their fun loving Hawaii inspired songs and pop favorites with a twist and all festival goers got down on the dance floor. At the end they played a song written by their father and performed by a real Hawaiian dancer called “Oahu.” In this moment the festival goers got lost in the music and really imagined themselves in the beautiful far off islands.

Warped Corner
By Heidi Darby
NiteGuide gains inside perspective on The Warped Tour, as it rolls into San Diego on August 9.
Lucero
“We got new management and we came to the realization that we were doing our own thing. We were getting a few new people, but we hit a ceiling,” Brian Venable, guitarist, shares. “We could have kept ourselves as insulated as that. But we wanted to open ourselves up for more people... With Warped Tour we’re trying to draw some new blood.” Lucero’s unique blend of grit and heart make them punk rock’s most romantically interesting band. With classic country undertones, and lyrics full of imagery and soulful queries, their throaty vocals and alt-country sound make them a jewel on this years Warped Tour. With an album on the horizon for 2012, the seasoned Tennessee natives embraced the brotherhood of The Warped Tour. “It’s like tailgating. You’re in the middle of a field, it’s not like a bar situation where you can go have a drink. But it is crazy, there’s a lot going on. We really bonded with the Street Dogs. We were friends with Against Me before hand, and we’re glad we get to see them again,” Venable said.
The Expendables “This year on The Warped Tour they’ve gone with some more reggae-rock styles. There’s a couple of other first timers on the tour, and they’re our genre. I think the Warped Tour ‘powers that be’ are noticing that our type of music can bring fans through the door,” Geoff Weers, guitar and vocals, said. The Expendables intertwine reggae and punk, with a dose of rock in between. After signing to Stoopid Records, the boys toured extensively with the labels founders and fellow California natives, Slightly Stoopid. “When I first heard their music in high school, The Longest Barrel Ride, it was really influential for me,” Weers says. “I think the rest of the band would say so as well. We kind of adopted their style and made it our own. They’ve taken us around the county, and I attribute a lot of our international fame to touring with them.” Now hitting every Warped Tour date this summer, they’re involved in a tour they grew up admiring, and experiencing first hand what it’s like to travel with 450 other people. “Everything is very organized, everyone’s working really hard to make it smooth. People are always setting something up or breaking something down. I’m fortunate enough to be traveling in a big comfortable bus, but the kids who are doing it in vans, it’s killer. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a tour with this gnarly of drives and scheduling.”
Middle Class Rut “I woke up today and was glad it was noon, and that we didn’t have to play an early time slot. It’s about 100 degrees with the same humidity. You have to respect the kids who buy tickets and pay money to come out in this heat, and watch all these bands play. It’s a trip out here,” Zack Lopez, guitarist, said. A two piece out of Sacramento, Middle Class Rut made a name for themselves with their breakout single “New Low” off their debut album No Name No Color. Consisting of Lopez and drummer Sean Stockham, the duo provides an edgy and refreshing sound to the stages of The Warped Tour. The pair has opened for bands including Them Crooked Vultures, and My Chemical Romance, and over the past two years have gained insight to road life. “If you’re not used to touring, and this is what you jump on first, it’s a good way to appreciate club touring later on. We’ve been doing it on and off for what feels like forever, so this is just another way of going about things. The strangest part about it for me, is that it all exists during the day, instead of nighttime. We get everything out of the way early in the day.” niteguidemag.com 39

If you’ve found yourself in a dating rut, see if you recognize yourself in these “7 Deadly Sins of Dating”. Pride – Do you dismiss him quickly because you think you are too good for him? Mommy and Daddy’s little princesses often grow up thinking that they are better than other people. Instead of assuming he isn’t good enough for you, don’t judge a book by its cover. Get to know him a little before you decide his relationship potential. Sloth – Are you active in your search for a partner? We are in a society that gives kids trophies just for participating. Is that really good enough? Or should we be teaching them to really go out and work for it? Just showing up to a bar or party isn’t enough. You have to mingle and talk to new people. Finding a partner in life takes work. You have to put yourself out there and be active in your dating. And ladies, this also means taking the initiative of asking a guy out, don’t just sit at home waiting for him to call you! Wrath – Are you still holding onto anger from a previous relationship? Not all men are the same. Just because one was a jerk and hurt you doesn’t mean that the next one will, too. Take a close look at the relationship that did you harm and learn from it. What should/could you have done differently? You must learn to trust again – without trust you will never have a successful relationship. Even if it takes time (and possibly some therapy), it’s worth it. After all, it is the rest of your life we are talking about. Envy – Do you always think that there is something or someone better out there? When you are in a relationship do you envy those who are single? And when you are single, do you envy those who are in a relationship? Focus on what is good in you and in your relationship. And don’t compare your relationship to someone else’s, everyone moves at different speeds. If you seem to be the bridesmaid and never the bride, that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen for you. Just make sure you don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you don’t deserve it, because you do. Lust – Do you seek intimacy without emotion? For some of us, there are times in our lives that are good for one-night stands and friends with benefits. But when you are ready for something more, reconnect with your emotional center and open yourself up so you will recognize when you find Mr. Right. Gluttony – Are you too needy? Does your life completely revolve around your relationship? Your partner shouldn’t have to continually prove his love. In fact, that will drive him away. And just because he doesn’t want to spend ALL of his time with you doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to be with you. He needs to have his life and you need to have yours. If one of you gives up their life for the other, that will only breed resentment over time. After I became single and started dating again, I quickly came to the realization that I wanted to be in a relationship with someone who wanted me, not someone who needed me. Dating someone who is needy is exhausting! Greed – Do you put too much emphasis on what kind of car he drives or how much money he makes? You can’t have a relationship with a bank account. I can tell you from experience that money does NOT buy happiness. Some people hide behind the money. If everything is about sports cars, expensive clothes and fancy dinners then they hope you are less likely to notice the flaws in their personalities and/or the flaws in your relationship. Plus, if he treats you like a possession, than you are more likely to be replaced like a possession. Dating should be fun and exciting. It should also be a growth experience. Dating different people gives you the opportunity to learn what is important to you and what you want and need out of a relationship. And just as important, it gives you the opportunity to improve yourself and be a better partner in your future relationships.
