Hit the Boards!

Is it really summer in New Jersey without a trip to your favorite boardwalk? From the sweet smell of funnel cake to amusement park tilt-a-whirls to a game of Skee-Ball or pinball (Silverball Retro Arcade in Asbury Park is a must!), a walk along the boards is a Jersey Shore rite of passage. In this issue, we share what we love most about six of our favorite boardwalks. Summer is also prime time for fairs and festivals, from the stunning spectacle that is the NJ Lottery Festival of Ballooning in Readington (which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year) to music and food truck fests throughout the state. Braces vs. Clear Aligners

Here’s what you should know about both types of orthodontic treatments

If your child’s dentist has recommended braces, you’re probably wondering about the options. You may be familiar with traditional braces, but you’ve also heard about clear aligners, such as Invisalign.

“Clear aligners are a removable orthodontic treatment option,” says Jacy Papasikos, DMD, an orthodontist at Papasikos Orthodontics in Montclair and Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics of Midland Park. “They consist of a series of plastic aligners or trays. Each week a new tray is introduced to apply more pressure to the teeth.”

Clear aligner therapy appeals to some families for many reasons, especially cosmetic purposes. “Clear aligners are less visible than traditional braces so many kids, especially teens who are conscious of their appearance, prefer them,” says Richard Bloomstein, DDS, vice chairman of orthodontics at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. “When they’re worn correctly, they work well.”

Here’s what you should know about traditional braces versus clear aligners, as well as the pros and cons of both types:

CLEAR ALIGNERS MAY BE MORE COMFORTABLE

irritating to the tongue, lips and cheeks at first. And because they’re put into place all at once, there’s lots of pressure, all at once. Most kids do adapt to the soreness and wires after a few weeks of wearing them, says Papasikos.

But nothing is adhered to the teeth with clear aligners, so there’s nothing poking inside the mouth. The plastic trays also are somewhat flexible. But it’s a misconception to think clear aligners are completely pain-free because they’re still moving teeth, says Bloomstein. Kids adapt but both types of braces involve some temporary discomfort, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol.

TRADITIONAL BRACES ARE ALWAYS AT WORK

Because your child is always wearing traditional braces, they’re always working. There’s no break in treatment or forgetting to put aligners back in the mouth after eating. Many patients actually like the idea of not having to be bothered with taking the trays in and out or switching to the next tray, says Bloomstein. Traditional braces also may be a good option if kids tend to lose things, such

as their glasses or books (though if your child loses an aligner, you just skip to the next tray).

THE TREATMENT TIME IS ABOUT THE SAME

“Braces and clear aligners can achieve the same outcome in the same amount of time, which is about a two-year process,” says Papasikos. Braces need adjustments from time to time, which means trips about every six weeks to the orthodontist’s office. Appointments for aligners usually are every three months, with fewer unplanned visits because there’s nothing to break, such as wires. Typically, kids spend less chair time with aligners with fewer trips to the office.

But—and here’s the kicker—clear aligners rely more on your kid’s willingness and ability to follow the treatment plan. The recommendation is that kids wear them 22 hours per day. “You know your kid best,” says Papasikos. “One of the perks of clear aligners is that there’s lots of freedom, but there’s also lots of responsibility. Nagging won’t work. If your child isn’t going to wear them, they’re not the best choice.”

MAINTENANCE IS EASIER WITH CLEAR ALIGNERS

Obviously, it’s more challenging to clean teeth with braces on; kids have to brush for a longer period of time to dislodge food, and flossing is essential, followed by a fluoride mouth rinse. “There are more areas for food and bacteria to hide with traditional braces, meaning kids can be more prone to cavities,” says Papasikos.

Aligners have another benefit because kids take them out to eat. Kids with traditional braces shouldn’t eat sticky, hard or crunchy foods such as carrots, whole apples or pretzels. But there are no such limitations with aligners. It’s also easier to brush, though the trays do need to be cleaned twice a day, too.

CLEAR ALIGNERS AREN’T FOR EVERY KID

Every case is different, so your orthodontist must evaluate the child’s individual needs. “In general, we have less control over tooth movement with clear aligners,” says Bloomstein. “With traditional braces, we can push and pull so we have twice the mobility. But aligners just push against the tooth. That may not be appropriate for more complex cases, such as where there are large spaces.” In some cases, your orthodontist may recommend a combination therapy, starting (or ending) with traditional braces to achieve the type of correction your child requires.

BOTH ARE SIMILAR IN COST

Insurance coverage typically is the same for braces or clear aligners, with a lifetime maximum of whatever your insurance allows for orthodontics. Generally, braces run about $5,000 to $7,000 (less insurance coverage), with clear aligners usually costing about $500 more overall. In addition, many orthodontists will allow you to split the fee into no-interest monthly payments.

As a parent, you’re always attuned to your kid’s health. But should you be worried when your kid complains of back pain? Or maybe you’ve noticed that your child’s shoulders or hips look uneven when wearing a bathing suit. Should that be checked out?

It turns out there are common spinal issues parents should know about so they can seek early treatment. “The most common spinal condition in kids is scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine,” says David H. Clements III, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery and director of the Scoliosis Program at Cooper Bone and Joint Institute at Cooper University Health Care. “We can do a simple exam to look at a child’s spine to see if it’s symmetrical and determine appropriate treatment based on the degree of the curve.” Here’s what else to know about common spinal issues:

WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Although scoliosis often runs in families, it’s not really known why the Sor C-shaped curve develops. “Scoliosis often appears when kids are around ages 10 or 11, but most kids are so flexible that they’re not even aware of it,” says Clements. “It typically comes on slowly, and kids aren’t usually in pain.” It affects about 2 to 3 percent of the population, but girls are eight times more likely than boys to progress to a curve that requires treatment.

Mark Rieger, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and the founding partner at The Pediatric Orthopedic Center in Cedar Knolls, says most cases of scoliosis don’t require treatment. “We see a lot of patients who just require observation, fortunately,” Rieger says. “There are fewer surgical cases being done because early intervention is so effective in suppressing curve progression.” Using a comprehensive approach of monitoring by a physician, getting physical therapy, making sure the patient is getting enough vitamin D and calcium, if needed, and early bracing are key.

Scoliosis is usually diagnosed by a physical exam and then confirmed by X-ray. Typically, the curve is monitored by X-ray and exams every six months to see if it’s worsening. At The Pediatric Orthopedic Center, a special EOS X-ray is used which requires far less radiation than a regular X-ray. While mild scoliosis curves don’t need treatment, kids with moderate curves between 25 and 40 degrees and who are still growing may require a brace, which fits under the arms to the hips. “Many studies show that the braces stop curve progression in about 80 percent of kids who wear it as prescribed,” says Clements. It’s typically worn about 16 hours per day but can be removed for activities such as sports.

More severe cases of scoliosis must be treated with surgery. One example is a posterior spinal fusion using what’s called a Firefly instrument that creates precision guides that minimize surgical risk and radiation exposure, Rieger says. Another surgical option is anterior vertebral body tethering, which is up-and-coming, and modulates the growth of the spine, he adds.

Physical therapy (PT) also helps. “PT can help align and stabilize the spine with strengthening exercises,” says Ashley Conklin, DPT, assistant professor, Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences at Rutgers School of Health Professions. “We collaborate with your child’s doctor and orthotist, who fits the brace, to tailor PT to the child’s specific needs.”

WHAT IS KYPHOSIS?

Kyphosis is a forward-bending of the spine, resulting in a rounding of the upper back. It’s also diagnosed by exam and X-rays. “It’s a postural issue, which I see in kids who are constantly bending forward and looking at their phones,” says Clements. It can be seen at any age but is more common in adolescent females. Fortunately, postural kyphosis can be corrected with stretching and strengthening exercises.

Rarely, kids may be diagnosed with Scheuermanns kyphosis, which becomes apparent during the teen years. It may cause back pain and is due to a structural deformity, not poor posture, so X-rays will show consecutive vertebrae with a triangular, instead of the normal rectangular shape. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, PT also may relieve pain and improve posture from this type of kyphosis. Some kids also may benefit from bracing.

WHAT IS SPONDYLOSIS OR SPONDYLOLISTHESIS?

These are two conditions diagnosed by exam and X-ray. “Spondylosis is a crack in the part of the vertebrae which is thin and ‘plastic’ in a kid’s spine,” says Clements. “This part doesn’t harden up until adulthood, so it can fracture with repetitive stress. It’s especially common in kids who participate in sports in which they’re leaning backwards a lot, such as gymnastics.”

The crack may cause the vertebrae to shift or slip forward, which is called spondylolisthesis. Slippage often occurs during periods of rapid growth. Kids may have no symptoms or, with severe slips, they may experience lower back or leg pain, says Clements. Treatments may include limiting activities to allow healing, a back brace, and PT.

WHY DO KIDS HAVE BACK PAIN?

Fortunately, not all back pain is related to a genetic or structural issue with the spine. Carrying a heavy backpack is a common cause of back pain. Clements says kids should carry less than 10 pounds in their bags. “Learning some basic stretches, reducing screen time, and moving more relieves back pain in many of the children I treat,” Clements says.

If you’re concerned about a potential issue, have your child assessed. An awareness of common spinal conditions, along with early intervention, PT and exercise can help promote more positive outcomes with back issues at any age.

Some of the most common sports injuries seen by pediatric orthopedists in our office and urgent care clinic include sprains and strains, fractures, growth plate injuries, and overuse injuries.

How can sports-related injuries be prevented in children?

Parents can help prevent sports-related injuries in their children by ensuring that their children warm up and cool down properly, wear appropriate protective gear, focus on proper technique, gradually increase intensity and duration, take rest and recovery breaks, stay hydrated, and play on appropriate surfaces. Parents should encourage their children to be involved in multiple athletic activities as opposed to specializing in a single sport and playing it year-round. Doing so will avoid using the same muscles repeatedly without adequate recovery time.

How does the treatment approach of a pediatric orthopedist differ from that of an adult orthopedist?

A pediatric orthopedist’s treatment approach may differ from that of an adult orthopedist due to the differences in anatomy and physiology between children and adults, as well as the fact that children’s bones, muscles, and joints are still growing and developing. Pediatric orthopedists

may also focus more on conservative, non-operative treatment options to avoid interfering with growth and development.

Besides sports injuries, what other common conditions do you treat?

Some common conditions our pediatric orthopedists may treat include developmental dysplasia of the hip, scoliosis (low-dose radiation imaging and in-house bracing available), limb length discrepancy, clubfoot (Ponseti method), neuromuscular disorders, and trauma such as fractures, dislocations, and ligament injuries.

What are some of the latest advances in pediatric orthopedics?

Some of the latest advances in pediatric orthopedics include 3D printing technology for custom orthotics and surgical guides, minimally invasive surgical techniques, motion analysis technology, biologic therapies for tissue regeneration, biological implants (BEAR for ACL tears) and implantable devices such as growth rods and magnetic rods for spinal deformities.

Boardwalks THE BEST ALONG THE JERSEY SHORE

Summer in the Garden State means hitting the boards for some epic family fun! From rides and games to delicious eats and treats (not to mention spectacular Shore views), these boardwalks have something for everyone in your crew.

Asbury Park

A little bit edgy, a little bit rock n’ roll and a whole lot of fun, this boardwalk is a Jersey Shore staple. Come for the trendy restaurants, bars and historical buildings and stay for fun activities like mini-golf at Asbury Eighteen. Kids will love getting wet at the Asbury Splash Park on the boardwalk. Snap some pics at the historic waterfront Carousel Building and take in a concert at the iconic Convention Hall. The legendary Stone Pony is just across the street, as is Wonder Bar which is so dog-friendly it even hosts a Yappy Hour. The Silverball Museum has more than 6,000 pinball machines you can marvel at and play for an admission fee (no quarters required). Head to nearby Cookman Avenue and its side streets where you can check out the shops, galleries, coffee shops, microbreweries and distilleries and more eateries.

Atlantic City Long Branch

AC has the oldest (built in 1870) and longest boardwalk in America. Step outside the resorts and casinos to take a ride on a rolling chair along the boardwalk the way they did back in 1880! The boardwalk is 4 miles each way and filled with shops, dining, entertainment and of course salt water taffy. Take a stroll and you’ll be entertained by musicians and street performers along the boardwalk. Bike rentals are available from 6 to 10 am. Be sure to make your way to Steel Pier, the oldest amusement park with thrill rides like the Slingshot and classic ones like the carousel. While you’re in the area, head to nearby Margate City to see Lucy the Elephant, a National Historic Landmark.

This boardwalk was revitalized with the addition of Pier Village in the Victorian-inspired community. These days you’ll find ample parking, great restaurants like Simply Greek which has a daily happy hour and of course the original WindMill hot dogs (don’t forget the cheese fries). There’s a great carousel for the young and young-at-heart that evokes the nostalgic history of Long Branch. Boardwalk Fun and Games has virtual reality games, Skee-Ball, crane games and more for all ages and skill levels. Try the free, year-round scavenger hunt that’ll have you taking photos of some of this beautiful beach town’s most iconic sites.

Wildwood

A visit to the Wildwoods is worth the trip! With 38 blocks of fun, over 100 rides, three beachfront waterparks, arcades, minigolf, go-carts and escape rooms, this boardwalk is truly a summer paradise for families. Known as one of our country’s last great seaside promenades, it’s been a center of activity for families since the 1890s. Be sure to spend some time at Morey’s Piers for amusement rides, two water parks, dining and events including the Sticks in the Sand Beach Hockey Tournament. Head to PigDog Beach for the best BBQ on the sand. The loaded BBQ fries and trash can nachos will be a hit with the kids. Take a morning bike ride with a view or a serene stroll at sunset. You’ll also find fun events all summer including beach yoga and the Wildwoods International Kite Festival.

Ocean City

Friends and family step onto the boards here for wholesome fun and adventure. The 2.5-mile boardwalk is a favorite for biking, walking and jogging in the early morning hours. The two can’tmiss destinations here are Gillian’s Wonderland Pier at Boardwalk and 6th Street and Playland’s Castaway Cove at Boardwalk and 10th Street. The Music Pier hosts a summer concert series featuring a full range of musical styles and on Tuesdays and Thursdays the Philadelphia Mummers bands strut the boardwalk from 6th to 14th streets. Shopping is another fun activity and you’ll find everything from antiques and collectibles to fudge and jewelry. Grab a sausage or an ice cream for a snack or take the teens to Bungalow Bowl for fruity açaí bowls and smoothies. You’d be remiss to pass up Manco & Manco Pizza and Shriver’s is an institution for salt water taffy and the best way to bring home a taste of those seaside memories.

Point Pleasant

Jenkinson’s Boardwalk on Point Pleasant Beach is all about family fun. Come for the rides (there are kiddie rides for the little ones and coasters for the big kids!), the SkeeBall, video games, batting cages and of course tons of games up and down the boardwalk. Don’t forget to stop by Jenkinson’s Aquarium where kids will marvel at the fish, penguins, seals and sharks and other forms of marine life. When you’re hungry, the Boardwalk Bar & Grill has seafood, salads and pasta. Stop by Martell’s Tiki Bar sans kids for a strawberry daiquiri or tequila sunrise. The new Adventure Lookout Ropes Course is fun for the whole family since there’s a larger course (for those over 48” tall) or a smaller one for guests under 48” (Sky Tykes).

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT FOR YOUR BABY

Choosing a pediatrician is one of the most important choices you’ll make for your baby. But where and when to begin? According to Bert Mandelbaum, MD, of Princeton Nassau Pediatrics in Princeton, expectant moms should choose a pediatrician before they deliver. That’s because many times a pediatrician will see the baby in the hospital after you give birth.

“Newborn infants need close follow up once discharged from the hospital and often have to see their pediatrician within one to two days of discharge, so making a decision on your pediatrician in advance can be extremely helpful,” Mandelbaum says.

Basil Bruno, MD, medical director of Pediatrics, Optum Pediatrics in Rochelle Park, says it’s never too early to start looking for a pediatrician. “Start making appointments for interviews, either in person or remotely, during the second trimester if possible. Ask to take a tour of the offices you visit.”

Here are some tips for finding the right fit:

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

Of course, you’ll want to find a pediatrician who accepts your health insurance and who is located within a short distance from where you live since there are plenty of visits, especially in the first year of life. It’s vital that you feel comfortable with the doctor and staff at the office.

“Understanding the office hours and availability is essential as well, as infants and children get sick often,” says Mandelbaum. “It can be helpful to look at the pediatrician’s training as well and whether they have any special interests that might align with your concerns.  Parents can inquire about immunization policies, whether sick children and healthy children are kept separately in the waiting areas and about the average length of time for an appointment as well as the average wait times.”

Bruno says that parents should remember that their pediatrician is their partner when it comes to their child’s healthcare. “You need to feel comfortable having a conversation, and not be intimidated to ask questions.” Ideally, they should be board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. “You want to make sure the doctor is accessible,” says Bruno. “Do they use e-mail or texting apps along with phone calls? Is there a nurse

or medical assistant available in the office to answer non-urgent questions? What are the doctor’s views on using antibiotics and/ or over-the-counter medications?”

Some additional questions to ask include:

What is your philosophy on immunizations?

How long have you been in practice?

What are your office hours?

Do you do same-day sick visits?

Is someone available after hours to answer phone calls?

Do you have evening, weekend or holiday availability?

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Once you’ve ensured that the practice meets your requirements for geography, practice hours and insurance, most of the “fit” issues are about style and communication. “Going to an open house and meeting the pediatrician can be very helpful,” says Mandelbaum. “It gives you a sense of the office, the staff and a feel for the communication style.”

You can usually get a good idea if you feel comfortable with how the doctor answers your questions and seems willing to engage in conversation with you. “If they seem genuinely interested in your concerns and questions, then they are a good fit for you,” says Bruno. Having a sense of confidence with the doctor’s answers is always a good sign. If the office meets your access and insurance needs, that only adds to your comfort level.

RED FLAGS TO LOOK OUT FOR

“Red flags include if the doctor seems rushed and seems short in answering your initial questions,” says Bruno. “If you’re feeling intimidated or afraid to ask questions, then they are not a good fit for you.” If possible, take time to visit the offices and take notice if the staff as well as patients in the waiting room seem happy to be in the office.

Mandelbaum says parents should trust their gut. “You are creating a long-term partnership to provide comprehensive care to your most precious asset: your newborn. You want to ensure that you feel comfortable trusting this person and heeding their advice. If you don’t feel as if you can trust your pediatrician, you should consider that it might not be the right fit.”

It’s never too early to start your baby’s dental care routine

Even though your baby may not have cut any teeth yet, it’s never too early to think about dental care. Here’s how to make sure your kids keep their pearly whites healthy for life.

THE BABY DAYS

Infants need oral care even before their teeth come in, says Elisa J. Velazquez, DMD, MSD, president of the NJ Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Hispanic Dental Association, and the NJ Dental Association. “Wipe the child’s gums after each feeding. Gradually begin brushing the gums and teeth as they erupt with a soft brush. Babies should never go to bed with a bottle; ideally, brushing should be the last thing that happens before bed.”

Thumb sucking or pacifier use are natural forms of self-soothing, but parents should decrease these habits around 18 months.

“Prolonged use may interfere with the growth and development of the palate and teeth,” says Velazquez, of Ocean Pediatric Dental Associates in Cream Ridge, Manahawkin and Toms River.

TIMING YOUR FIRST VISIT

Babies should be seen at age 1 for their first visit, Velazquez says. “Our goal is to guide parents through the teething years and establish good, healthy oral hygiene habits.” Children should then be seen every six months for a checkup and cleaning.

signs of teeth coming in are drooling and babies putting their hands in their mouth. “Ideally, familiarize yourself with the eruption pattern of baby teeth,” she says. “Remember, they may experience irritability during teething. Rubbing the gums with a clean finger, washcloth or teething ring may help with discomfort. Please avoid teething necklaces, teething tablets or pain medications containing benzocaine.” Teethers have parts that can break off and be a choking hazard, she says. If a teether is filled with liquid, newly erupting teeth could puncture and release the liquid.

KEEPING CAVITIES AWAY

Kids have 20 baby teeth, which they start losing between the ages of 5 and 7. Baby teeth typically fall out and are replaced by about 12 years old. But you still want to avoid cavities in baby’s teeth.

Any food or drinks that have natural or added sugars can cause cavities. Juice, starchy snacks and sticky snacks (like gummy bears) are leading causes of tooth decay for kids, Velazquez says.

FINDING THE RIGHT DENTIST

Remember that all pediatric dentists should have two years of additional training specializing in children in addition to four years of dental school, says Velazquez. “You want a pediatric dentist you trust and feel comfortable with for their growth and development.” she says.

Aformer elementary school teacher turned full-time mom of four boys, Chastity Milligan has always loved baking and is known among family and friends as a thoughtful and creative gift giver. When her father was recovering from a hospital stay in early 2022, Milligan wasn’t able to visit him right away due to COVID restrictions. So she sent him a care package that included a handwritten card, a drawing from her son, homemade diabetic-friendly quiche, chicken soup and some no-slip socks. Thrilled to get such a thoughtful package, Milligan’s father called to thank her. “He was filled with joy over the package. I was able to send him some homemade love to let him know just how much I was thinking of him,” she says. “I had no idea he’d pass away just a few days later. It gives me comfort to know that in his final days, my dad knew how much I was thinking of him, even though I couldn’t see him in person.” Milligan always knew she wanted to do something creative and decided to finally pursue her passion and start Sending Goodness in honor of her father. Her love for him motivated her to take the idea of “sending goodness” and turn it into a business. She chose lemons to represent her brand because they’re not only bright and cheerful but also boost mood and immunity. And, as Milligan shares: “When life gives you lemons...I say, make lemon cake!” We asked her about her business, the parenting and entrepreneur juggle and what she likes to do for fun with her family in NJ.

New Jersey Family: Did you always love baking growing up?

Chastity Milligan: I grew up in the small town of Ellwood City, PA, and come from an Italian family. Food was at the center of all occasions. I learned to cook and bake by watching my mom. We always sent thoughtful gifts, usually involving food, around the holidays, to celebrate something good like a new baby, or when someone was sick or grieving. Now that my family and friends are spread out all over the country, I am sensitive to the fact that we can’t always stop over someone’s house with a meal or thoughtful gift. Sending Goodness is the solution to that.

NJF: What makes Sending Goodness unique?

CM: In life, the relationships we form and maintain are everything, but our lives are busier than ever these days. I think many people notice an occasion and want to do something thoughtful for that person, but may not have the time to put it all together and mail it. Sending Goodness is a product and a service that solves this problem and makes life easier. It allows the giver to be thoughtful and send their love and support, and it connects them with the recipient who receives the unique and often unexpected gift.

NJF: Tell us about the first box you curated.

CM: The first was for a client who requested a St. Patrick’s Day gift box. Morristown throws a big St. Patrick’s Day parade every year, and many homes and businesses in town have parties afterwards. This was made for a hostess gift. It featured homemade Irish soda bread and other specialty Irish “goodness.” I came up with most of the other ideas that followed by brainstorming with and taking special requests from friends and family.

NJF: How do you source the goodies for your boxes?

CM: Every signature lemon loaf and dessert are homemade by me. I source the honey from Wightman Farms in Morristown. The succulents come from Country Mile Gardens in Morristown. I am currently searching for other local makers to collaborate with.

NJF: What are your best sellers?

CM: The bestsellers are the Sympathy, Sending Hugs, Get Well and Thank You boxes. I think the fact that these heartfelt boxes are our bestsellers is a testament and reflection of our society wanting to spread goodness. It shows that people are striving to stay connected, and people do care about being thoughtful, grateful and encouraging others in good times and bad.

NJF: Do your sons get involved with the business?

CM: I have four boys: Shawn, 12; Sam, 10; Charlie, 8, and James, 8. The boys are watching and learning firsthand how to take an idea and turn it into a business. They help me build the boxes, arrange the bubble wrap, carry boxes into the post office, and even ride their bikes to deliver files back and forth between my graphic artist and me. But the most fun part we do together is coming up with ideas for boxes. We’ll do a roundtable discussion, and they pitch me ideas. We’ve done several children’s boxes, and they have helped consult as to what goes in them. Favorites of theirs have been the How to Catch a Leprechaun Box and the ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Box. I hope that I’m teaching them an example of confidence, hard work and helping people. I hope that they are learning to think creatively, to question, problem-solve and to confidently turn their ideas into actions.

NJF: What was your proudest moment as a business owner?

CM: My proudest moments have been when friends and family who I haven’t seen in years have reached out to use Sending Goodness for their families, friends and clients. The smiles and joy emanating from the Sending Goodness community have surprised and touched me more than I ever expected.

NJF: What advice would you give to an aspiring business owner?

CM: Have confidence in yourself and your product or service! If you’re confident, others will be too. There will be setbacks along the way, but work hard and don’t give up. It’s worth it!

NJF: What do you love about living in Morristown?

CM: It’s rich with culture and history, going back to the Revolutionary War, and I love that our children have historical landmarks right in their backyard. Our downtown is full of energy, with so many dynamic restaurants and events. But Morristown wouldn’t be what it is without the community of supportive people. It’s a rather large town, but with a smalltown feel.

NJF: What do you like to do in New Jersey with your kids?

CM: Our boys are involved in baseball, lacrosse, football, track, and wrestling, so it gets busy! We love watching them play sports and the energy and camaraderie that goes with it. We’re also involved in our church, which provides opportunities for service projects. In the summer, we love spending time at the Jersey Shore.

NJF: What’s next for Sending Goodness?

CM: We’ve only been in business for one year. We are working on bringing in new, exciting products, new ideas for gift boxes, and expanding our customer base.

What inspired you to start your practice?

I was inspired to start my practice once I became a mom. Building a start-up is sort of like becoming a new mom. You study and research hard in anticipation of it. Once it opens for business, you work hard day and night to nurture it. As the practice grows you can never be certain that you are doing things right. You can’t guarantee it will be successful, but you give it 100 percent because it’s your baby. Once the practice begins to mature and you see the impact it has on the community around you it’s the most gratifying thing in the world.

What do you love most about what you do?

We’ve built a culture here at MPDC that breaks the “scary dental office” stigma.  Our patients are the Growing Smiles Club. This gives them pride and ownership of their oral health. I love what I do because oral health is such a major component of the overall development and wellness of a child. If I can teach families about prevention early, the result is a cavity-free beautiful, bright smile that will grow into adolescence and adulthood.

How do you juggle business with family demands?

I have found the only way to juggle being a business owner with family demands is to hire and build a quality staff.  As moms we are hard-wired to “do it all.”  In family and in business it takes a village. I strive to balance the stress with things I enjoy so that I can show up as my best authentic self for my family and my patients.

What sets your practice apart?

What inspired you to start Morphmom?

I served as an assistant prosecutor in Hudson County for many years. I stopped after the birth of my second child and later discovered that reentering the workforce would be difficult. I quickly noticed that I was not alone and that there were, in fact, many women who found themselves in a similar position, struggling to discover their next step, be it work related, volunteer-based, or simply rediscovering their passion. I began to travel the country to chronicle and share the inspirational stories of women. Since its launch, Morphmom has become a platform to promote, support, inspire, empower, educate and connect these women and their remarkable stories, in order to help them to find their next step.

What do you love most about what you do?

I’m honored to meet the most incredible and inspiring women and to share their stories to help others.

How has your business evolved?

I began traveling the country with a video camera and tripod capturing stories and sharing them on our website. I then began hosting live events and conferences. I shared these stories in my Huffington Post column and hosted a live radio show and podcast. When the pandemic hit, we pivoted to an online show, The Happier Hour, where we interview an inspiring woman. It now airs on Instagram live @morphmom every Wednesday at 6 pm. Post-pandemic we started a daily newsletter “Morphmom Daily” and have returned to live events. We’re bringing our “show on the road” and hosting intimate speaker events around the country three times a year. We just visited Asheville, Charleston and Boston. This upcoming year we plan to add Westchester, Palm Beach and Washington D.C to our tour!

What would you like everyone to know about you?

I love what I do. I love meeting and connecting women around the country and sharing these incredible stories. I am forever grateful to the Morphmom community—a group of incredibly kind, generous and amazing women who graciously give their time to help others, and I am inspired every day.

What’s next for you?

We have fallen in love with our weekly Morphmom Happier Hour and are excited to grow our show and audience. We’re also thrilled to announce that we are starting a national Morphmom registry—as part of our club—allowing women to stay connected locally after our events, and providing access to women around the country as well.

What inspired you to start your business?

What inspired you to start your own business?

Dental visits aren’t usually a priority for some families. I started a family-friendly practice to help view dental visits as a routine activity, by welcoming families in a warm, caring, comfortable and professional environment. What’s your most memorable experience with a client?

When a parent said this was her daughter’s fourth dental office and she didn’t think I’d be able to get X-rays or do treatment. We proved her wrong. At the end of her visit, her child remarked, “I like this dentist.” After 12 years, she’s still my patient, along with her siblings.

How are you involved in your local community?

One of our biggest annual events is giving back with Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) where we donate dental services to underserved children. IT WORK Making

The designer’s challenge with this home office in Woodcliff Lake was to work with the room’s existing architecture to achieve a sophisticated professional space. Rather than try to minimize the room’s predominant feature—the bookcase built-ins—Pacca went big and bold, designing the entire space around it. Keeping the walls neutral, she revitalized the built-ins by painting them a commanding shade of blue. From there, she chose a modern, multi-hued Jaipur area rug and added complementary pops of color on the window seat and pillows. She sealed the deal with power players like the oversized gold chandelier from Currey & Company, desk from Mr. Brown Home, Moe’s desk chair and two Bernhardt chairs to achieve a room that projects both personal and professional polish.

Pro Tip: Start with one key piece, such as artwork, fabric or an area rug, and design the room around it. Don’t be afraid of paint or oversized pieces such as furniture and light fixtures.

While large enough, this South Orange kitchen was so poorly organized that the homeowners were constantly bumping into each other. In addition to daily family meals, they enjoy making kombucha, yogurt and beer, as well as growing vegetables in their garden. Their wish list: an ultra-functional, efficient space personalized to their sustainable lifestyle. Stephens’ key structural changes—closing off the unused back stairs, relocating the half bath and reconfiguring windows—enhanced flow and function by carving out two separate work zones, a two-seat peninsula and a small rear-door mudroom area. Gray Shaker cabinets, black crackle glaze tile backsplash, whimsical star-patterned porcelain floor tiles, walnut countertops and apron-front sink enhance the cozy culinary haven. Custom details—a Julia Child-inspired pegboard displaying the homeowners’ cooking gadgetry and a hand-crafted walnut countertop spice rack—avoid cookie-cutter conformity. The result: a warm, welcoming space with a modern farmhouse vibe.

Pro Tip: Pre-plan where you’ll store essentials, create separate prep, cleaning and cooking zones as well as specially designated areas like a drop-off section or a pet feeding spot.

OUTDOOR LIVING

The Lincoln Park homeowners wanted an off-premise, temperaturecontrolled site to store their third car, as well as additional outdoor living and entertaining space. Mannarino’s novel solution: chip away the mountain of granite at the top of the driveway and build the third garage directly into the bedrock using the same red brick employed for the main house and existing garages. Taking advantage of the property’s sweeping views, she designed a rooftop deck atop the new garage and a tiered space off the back leading down to a new islandstyle kitchen with a refrigerator, icemaker, storage and grill. She kept the natural cuts of the bedrock alongside the newly formed stonefaced and bluestone-topped steps. For the rooftop deck, she opted for low-maintenance decking installed above the fiberglass garage roof and added a glass/stainless steel railing. Placed along the property’s perimeter and stairs, black iron gates and railings blend in with rocks and landscaping. For added convenience and safety, the redesigned paved driveway and walkway now feature a snowmelt system.

Pro Tip: Before completely bulldozing or removing all trees, plantings and natural hardscapes, try incorporating some into the new design. At a minimum, consider replanting or repurposing some of the existing natural elements.

How to decide if coverage makes sense for your family

We all love our four-legged family members, but it can be very expensive to care for them. Insurance for pets is similar to health insurance for people in that there are a variety of companies, plans and levels of coverage to choose from. Despite the growth in the number of plans, many pet owners don’t have insurance. Here’s what to consider if you’re thinking about getting insurance for your pet.

WHAT IS PET INSURANCE AND WHAT DOES IT COVER?

Pet insurance is a health plan that covers specific medical exams and treatments. Each company has a distinct plan and coverage options that vary. Among the most common plans are Nationwide, ASPCA,

A sample pet insurance policy can range anywhere from $11 to $70 a month, depending on the animal’s species, breed, age, pre-existing conditions and where you live, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The cost of coverage also depends on the level of care you choose, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Basic coverage includes accidental injuries and illness, but not cancer; comprehensive office visits, diagnostic tests, X-rays, lab fees and prescriptions; and wellness care would provide reimbursement for preventative care, including vaccinations.

her office, but often are not covered for exams or routine visits. Schwartz notes spaying and neutering are often not covered. Most insurance companies will pay for issues related to a birth defect but won’t cover a preexisting condition. That’s why it’s important to buy insurance before any issues are noted by the vet.

DO YOU NEED INSURANCE?

In theory, you should get insurance for things you can’t afford, such as an unexpected illness, an accident like getting hit by a car or needing surgery because your pet swallowed something, Schwartz says. If you can afford $200 per year for checkups and vaccines, let’s say, she says insurance doesn’t have to be a priority; versus spending $500 for bloodwork because a cat is in kidney failure or $2,000 on a surgery to remove a squeaker toy.

“You need insurance for the unexpected,” she says. “It’s like health insurance or life insurance—you hope you never need to use it, you hope it’s a waste of money, but if you ever need it it’s good to know it’s there.” She likened it to the difference between spending, for example, $30 a month on health insurance or paying off a $2,000 credit card bill. “It’s never wrong to have your insurance as a backup plan,” she says.

If you buy a policy, it’s important to purchase it as early on as possible so the rates are low and health issues are not declined, Schwartz says. The bottom line: If you get insurance later in a pet’s life, the insurance company is more likely to classify most issues as preexisting and not cover them. “Decide when they’re younger if you’re going to get it. The premium is more expensive when they’re older because they are more likely to get sick or they are more prone to accidents,” she says.

Marlboro resident Randi Colatrella welcomed her purebred English bulldog, Tank, four years ago. Encouraged by her mother and sister who had pet insurance, Colatrella purchased a plan before she brought Tank home. She chose both a wellness plan and an injury/illness plan through Nationwide. “I wanted to make sure that we had insurance right from the start,” she says.

Colatrella says this was a great idea, in retrospect, because Tank has had numerous ear, eye and tail infections (prior to his tail removal), infections on his feet, allergies and was hospitalized for pneumonia. Colatrella jokes she could have bought a dream vacation home with the amount of money spent on her beloved pup.

She says the ophthalmologist was covered, but not the medication. Tail removal surgery was not covered because it was considered a birth defect. Tank’s hospital stay for pneumonia was also not covered. She has to meet a deductible and there is a cap on certain treatments, which factor in as well. But in her case, she says she “absolutely” saved money by having insurance.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Most pet owners will have a deductible to meet, depending on the company they choose. Schwartz says most veterinary offices have pet parents pay upfront, and then submit the receipt to their insurance company for reimbursement. She says in rare cases the insurance company will pay the vet directly. Colatrella says her insurance typically

pays within a few days of her submitting a claim.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE INSURANCE?

If you can’t afford pet insurance and are wary of medical bills, organizations like St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison are willing to help.

“Veterinary care is expensive, and access is very limited in underserved communities,” says Sarah Sangree, director of Community Engagement for St. Hubert’s. “As part of our commitment to keeping pets with the families that love them, St. Hubert’s is able to assist with medical issues ranging from ear infections, emergency spays and blockages, to mass removals, intensive wound care and emergency dentals.”

In the last six months, St. Hubert’s Community Programs team has noticed a sharp increase in calls from New Jersey families in need of help with medical bills, vet visits, spay and neuter and emergency boarding, Sangree says.

Jersey City resident Kip Smith had a scare when his American pit bull terrier Benji, who will be 7 in July, ingested a corn cob this spring. “We noticed that he was vomiting and had a loss of appetite. After taking him to a vet, we found out that he had a blockage that required urgent medical attention.”

At the time, Smith did not have pet insurance – but he said he would definitely consider it now. “While it is unclear whether pet insurance would have saved us money in this particular incident, we recognize the value of having coverage and wish to avoid any future scares.”

Smith called St. Hubert’s, which “not only assisted us with providing valuable information and resources, but they also went above and beyond by covering the cost of Benji’s surgery,” he says. They helped find an urgent care facility that could treat Benji’s blockage, and they also advocated for financial assistance. “We are truly grateful for St. Hubert’s and their amazing team,” Smith says.
