THE CRUSADER KEY

Winter Wonderland The last weekend of November was Clark’s holiday kickoff and of course, Key Club was behind the scenes. On Saturday the 28th, Key Clubbers helped set up an decorate the municipal building for the annual tree lighting ceremony. Mr. Bernardo, director of Clark Recreation, asked everyone to make sure the building was as festive as possible. Key Club made the municipal building into a winter wonderland with tons of jolly wreaths, shiny snowflakes, lights and Christmas trees. Key Club even had their own tree to decorate! The next day was the actual event and Key Clubbers helped run the activities again. Members were Santa’s helpers that afternoon by helping him out with all the children who came to sit on his lap. Members also served food, painted faces and clean up afterwards. All the help from everyone made the event smoother. Mr. Bernardo sends his thanks to all who participated. Pictures on the next page.

Sandwiches for the Soul On Wednesday December 2nd, Key Club had their second annual sandwich making meeting! Members brought jam, jelly, bread and peanut butter to make tons of sandwiches for the homeless. Last year’s event was a huge success and this year’s was ten times better. The sandwiches were donated to a local church group that feeds those in need of a meal. In the end, there were 773 peanut butter jelly sandwiches ready to make some lives easier. Thanks for all who helped out and made the meeting so special!

Harlem Wizards Game On December 4th, the Harlem Wizards vs. Clark Faulty games took place at ALJ high school in the lower gymnasium. Key Clubbers have been helping out the Wizards for a couple years and this year was no different. An hour before doors opened to help check in tickets, set up the concession stand and organize a raffle game. Once all the families and friends were seated, the magic of the Harlem Wizards consumed the gym as the basketball players performed tricks, amazing dunks and out of this world alley hoops. Key Clubbers remained working the concession stand as the crowds went crazy as the Harlem Wizards dominated the teachers and staff members. All the tickets and snack profits go towards the Clark Board of Education to improve the schools’ of Clark. Key Club, the BOE and the Wizards raised over one thousand dollars from just the concession stand. It was an mazing and magical night!

Clark EMT Squad & Key Club

On December 5th and 6th, Key Clubbers helped out the Clark Emergency Squad prepare for their luncheon held at the Clark fire house. Key Clubbers on Saturday helped clean and decorate rooms for the lunch from 10am3pm. Then, on Sunday Key Clubbers helped serve the lunch participants their food and make sure everything ran smoothly for a few hours. A special thanks to senior Key Clubber, James Walsh, for taking charge on Sunday and making sure the event ran well. Another thank you to the two EMT volunteers who came to the sandwich making meeting to explain the event to the members.

Preschool Holiday Visit

On Monday, December 21, a group of Key Clubbers visited the town’s preschool at the Municipal Building on Westfield Ave. The children were all excited for the second visit from the Key Clubbers and all had their holiday spirit. The Key Clubbers taught the children the lesson of how it is important to give rather than to receive. Along with the lesson of giving, members helped the children decorate arts and crafts. The best part was when Santa Clause himself came to visit the preschool in Clark. One of the member’s father dressed up in a Santa suit and asked the children what they would like for Christmas. It was a great way to get excited for the holidays and spread the gift of giving. Happy Holidays from the Key Club board!

Women’s Shelter Collection

Throughout the month of December, Key Club has been collecting various items to donate to a local women’s shelter. The shelter has asked us to collect anything that is in good condition that count be used to help our the women and families at the shelter. Some of the items were toys, gently worn clothes, shoes, belts, and coats. On the last day of the collection, the club advisor’s office was full of bags and boxes that were donated by general members. A frequent donator was senior Brittany Carmino. Mrs. Zamboni, our club advisor, reported that she continued to “bring in tons of huge bags of clothes.” Shout out to you Brittany for being such a great help! The collection will be continuing into January.
