MAY 2015 President’s Message…………2 Doggy Derby………………..3 Spring RTC…………………4 Yuda Bands...………………..5 Member’s Corner……………6

I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the Objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

A note from your

PRESIDENT:

Key Clubbers, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Suess perfectly describes our vision for the new service year: caring and passionate Key Clubbers ready to make a difference. As your 2015-2016 President, I can say with a lot of confidence that we have an amazing service year to look forward to. I, along with the new officers, will be doing everything we can to make sure that you all have opportunities, to serve, lead, and care. Both the Executive Board and the Committee Board have come up with several new service and fundraising projects that are sure to interest all of you, including a Barbeque Social, Basketball Tournament, Tricky Tray, and a Masquerade Ball. With great pleasure, I can say that our first service project of the year, the Yuda Bands Project, has been a huge success. Together, with the help of our officers, members, and peers, we have been able to raise over $1000 for scholarship funds for Willian Lool, a 16 year old Guatemalan. Our accomplishments have also been noticed by the NJ District Board, who has chosen us to host Fall Rally, the largest gathering of Key Clubbers in New Jersey at Six Flags. As the host club, we are in charge of creating signs for the NJ District Board members, decorating the park prior to Fall Rally, and ensuring that the event runs smoothly. This is a great honor because WE have been chosen over all the Key Clubs in New Jersey to host this event.I hope everyone has an amazing summer and I look forward to working with you all next year! Yours in Caring and Service, Shreya Keshive

On Saturday, May 2, Key Clubbers traveled to the Kiwanis Doggy Derby at Yelencsics Park to help out. The doggy derby included many activities such as live music

and different booths where visitors could pick up pamphlets regarding how to bathe a dog and how often dogs should be checked up. There was even an adoption booth with several young puppies in a play area. There was a station for dogs to have their pictures taken in derby hats so that they could enter the “Cutest Dog” contest or the “Best Costume” contest. As the warm breeze blew, tiny Chihuahuas and enormous Retrievers pranced away in various color skirts, shirts, and hats. There were also several competitions that tested how quickly the dog could run to the other side of the park to how much water a dog can balance on its back when walking. As the afternoon sun be-

came more intense, people flocked to the lemonade stand the hotdog and hamburger barbeque. All proceeds supported various outreach projects in Edison, and overall, it was a success.

These past two weekends, Key Clubbers from around the state met up for the Regional Training Conferences, or RTCs. Here’s what you need to know about them:

What are RTCs? Regional Training Conferences, or RTCs, are a series of training conferences organized by the NJ District Board. All members of Key Club - general members, officers, and advisors alike - are invited to join! RTCs are held from 9am to 1pm on select weekends, and they feature informative workshops on a variety of topics, including: district events, service and fundraising ideas, public speaking, and ways to get more involved with Key Club. New club officers are strongly encouraged to attend - in fact, each officer MUST attend at least one RTC during his/her term in order to be distinguished at the end of the year at District Convention. Each club is encouraged to send at least one representative to its nearest RTC - and keep in mind, the more the merrier!

Why should I go? Going to an RTC can help you become more familiar with how Key Club branches from your school's club, to the NJ District level, and to Key Club International. You'll be able to get to know your 2015-2016 District Board and make friends with numerous other Key Clubbers around New Jersey through fun icebreakers. When are the next RTCs?

Yuda Bands! What are they? You may have seen them around everyone’s wrist lately, but did you know this is all for charity? A Yuda Band is a handmade leather and coconut bracelet from Guatemala, and the basis for a service learning project run by youth in high schools, jr highs, and middle schools across the United States.

Yuda is derived from “aYUDA”, the Spanish word for help, aid or assistance. Sales from Yuda Bands are used to build scholarship funds for youth in developing nations who would otherwise be unable to continue their education beyond the end of public education (6th grade) because of financial circumstances.
