Key Club Takes A Beach Trip

What did you do all summer?

By: Brianna Lukaisewicz Vice-president

On July 26th, the Kiwanis club had their summer K-Family picnic in Toms River NJ. This was a time for people from all the different branches of the K family to come together, from the K-kids, builders club, Key club (of course), Circle K, and Kiwanis. When the picnic first began, we started off by going around to the different beaches near the bay where the picnic was being held and cleaned up the trash around the beaches. It was such a great experience getting to clean the beaches with different members of the K-family from all over!

After the beach cleaning we all returned to enjoy some BBQ food made by the Circle K members! Later on came the activities. First we all went outside and had a sandcastle building contest. Of course, the key clubbers built the key club logo symbol as our sand castle. After the sand castle contest, there was a water balloon toss contest which quickly turned into a water balloon war! Needless to say our little war turned into another service project with us all cleaning up the water balloon leftovers. To top off the picnic, there was a throw a pie at a circle K district board. Whoever put in the most money in got to throw a pie. Our district governor, Josie, got to throw a pie at the Circle K district governor. Overall, it was a day filled with service and fun!

Thanks For Coming to the First Meeting! n September 9, 2015, the first 2015-2016 official service year meeting was held inside Arthur L. Johnson’s cafeteria after school. Once again, the new board introduced themselves to the crowd of key clubbers, new and old. The amount of new faces present at the first meeting was so refreshing and gave great hope for the new year. After a brief introduction of each board member, the upcoming events were read aloud to the crowd of members. Like last year, two guest speakers, the Pask’s joined the first meeting to explain the significance of the upcoming Miracles for Myeloma 5k on September 26, 2015. The members were moved by the heart-felt speech delivered by Mrs. Pask who is diagnosed with the disease. At the end of the guest speaker’s speech, members were directed to the back end of the cafeteria to sign up for upcoming events. Some freshman members personally introduced themselves to the board and asked their questions pertaining to Key Club. A total of 208 students signed in the first meeting! O

A Letter from the Secretary

Personal Hour Logs are due October 1st !!

This year we decided to try something new with the way we would keep record of everyone’s hours. I have created an excel spreadsheet in order to keep up-to-date records and to allow members to know their hours at all times. To assist in this effort, I have also created an hour log sheet. For all students who wish to participate on daily pre-school aftercare visits or PTA babysitting, this hour log is MANDATORY. The reason for this is because it is extremely difficult for a board member to go to every aftercare/babysitting event. So in order to get an accurate record of who attends these events, we are depending on you. If members want to use their logs to record any and all hours, they can. For everyone no matter what, the hour logs will be due on the 1st of every month. Once I receive an accurately completed hour log I will use it to update the master hour log so that we can update our records monthly. The logs will be accepted earlier than the first, but no later unless specified at one of our meetings. For those not attending the babysitting events, the logs will serve as a double check for us. We will have your hours already from the sign in-sign out sheets at every large event. Personally, I highly recommend using these hour logs especially to the underclassmen. By the time senior year comes around and you are applying to college and scholarships, it will be difficult to remember all of the great community service events that you participated in. Therefor to help you later on, I advise making a photocopy of your hour log so that you have one to keep for your own record and one to submit to me. If you want an hour log, either go to Mrs. Zamboni’s office or speak to one of our board members. I hope we have a fun and productive service year! —Georgia Stavrakis ALJ Key Club Secretary aljsecretary.georgia@gmail.com

The Second Meeting of September

The second general meeting was on September 16, 2016 in ALJ’s cafeteria afterschool. The day before, the board members met in the library to plan how the meeting would go. Our club advisor suggested we approach the meeting differently so keep the meetings interesting. All the students piled into the cafeteria waiting for the meeting to start while the board members handed out fliers, agendas and shirt order forms. The Key Club bell was rung and the meeting began with the board members explaining what Key Club meant to them. Then, Kristina and Brianna, president and vice-president, discussed the upcoming events like the garage sale for Tylor’s Soldier’s , the bake sale and the need for volunteers on Back to School Night. The editor, myself, then talked about one of ALJ Key Club’s biggest events: the Miracles for Myeloma 5K Walk/Run on September 26, 2015. The event needs volunteers to set up, clean up and join the club’s team online. More information about all the events can be found on the agendas. After the events were explained, Mrs. Zamboni and I gathered all the returned contracts that were handed in by the meeting to pick a winner for a free long-sleeve Key Club shirt. The lucky winner was Nicholas Serpe, a freshman member. The meeting was adjourned with Brianna ringing the Key Club bell and students began signing up for events.
