From timely tasks like debris removal to major considerations like fertilization, Benjamin Mateos, owner of Be Green All Pro Landscaping, offers insights on achieving a flourishing yard.
From concept through construction, Ben Chapman Development is dedicated to building high-quality, luxury homes.
Spring is here, which means your yard will soon be in full bloom!
Although, when it comes to landscaping, beauty is more than soil deep. From the unpredictability of spring weather to the acidity of soil to the positioning of your yard about the sun, many factors contribute to how well your yard will bloom. With spring at our doorstep, New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine interviewed Benjamin Mateos, owner of Be Green All Pro Landscaping, to walk us through everything that needs to be done so that your outdoor space can look its best.
Mateos has devoted his entire professional career to learning the art of landscaping. Born and raised in Mexico, Mateos immigrated to the U.S. 24 years ago and immediately began working in landscaping. “After more than 20 years working in this field, I decided it was time to start my own business,” Mateos says. In 2021, Mateos opened Be Green All Pro Landscaping. After just one year in business, Be Green won a Best of the Press award. “It was such an honor to be positioned alongside landscaping companies that have been in business for decades.”
What are a few basic things everyone should do to their landscaping in spring?
The most basic thing you need to do is remove all the leaves and debris that fell over the winter. You should also clean up the flower beds to prepare them for mulch. Finally, it’s very important to dethatch the lawn. This removes the layer of dead grass so that new grass can start to regrow.
Does your landscaping need anything major in the spring?
The most major thing your landscaping needs in the spring is fertilizer. After the cold winter leaves your yard brown and dead, fertilizer brings it back. It’s very important to fertilize your trees, shrubs, and lawn so that they come back beautifully. If you get the timing right, the temperature in spring is perfect for fertilizer.
“Bill
—LisaWhat is the right time to start your spring landscaping?
Typically, the right time to start spring landscaping is March, when the temperature starts to go up. Of course, it’s completely weatherdependent, and weather here can be unpredictable. However, as long as the weather permits, the second week in March is usually the ideal time to start.
Are there any trends in landscape design that you’re noticing?
In landscape design, including elements like large boulders and small evergreens is becoming very popular. Landscape design used to feature just a lot of flowers, but by including more evergreens, your yard can look bright and nice all year long.
Do you have any tips for spring landscaping?
The best tip I can give is to start controlling your weeds now. You want to prepare your lawn so it’s not overwhelmed by weeds in the summer. Another great tip is to use the right amount of mulch in spring; this protects the roots in summer so that your flower beds look their best. Finally, test your soil if you can. Determining how acidic or basic it is lets you know what flowers to plant and what will do best in your yard.
What are some things homeowners can do on their own?
Homeowners can clean up their flowerbeds and yards, mow their lawns, and even prune their shrubs with a bit of practice. However, keep in mind that there may be some things they are missing. When we mow the lawn, we don’t just cut the grass. We check water levels to make sure that there’s not too much or too little, as either one can kill the yard. You also want to be careful not to prune too much or too little, as that can damage or even kill the shrub.
What’s better left to the professionals?
Leave fertilizer and pesticide applications to the professionals. If you apply it at the wrong time, either it won’t be effective, or it will damage
or even burn the landscaping. You should also talk to a professional when you are doing a new planting. We’ve gotten several clients when they call to ask why their landscaping is not doing well. Each plant has different soil, sun, and water requirements, to name a few. For example, some trees need full sun while others need shade. Knowing these details makes a huge difference in the beauty of your landscaping.
Perennials or annuals?
Both! I love annuals, but perennials are essential too. You should do a nice mix. For example, there’s a type of azalea that flowers twice a year; add some annuals to that, and you will have a beautiful flower bed. And, if you add in some nice small evergreens and hardscaping details, you will have a flowerbed that looks beautiful all year.
Be Green All Pro Landscaping is a family business. Mateos has eight younger brothers that all work with him. “This business is important to all of us, and we all have the expertise to tackle any job. There’s nothing too big or too small,” Mateos says. Be Green All Pro does landscape design and installation, hardscaping design and installation, retaining walls, steps, stone veneers, fence installation, irrigation system installation and maintenance, lawn care, fertilizer and pesticide application, Christmas lights and décor, and snow removal.
“Customer satisfaction is the most important part of my business. I’ve spent decades building my knowledge and expertise. Now, I’m building a business, but I’m also building relationships. I truly believe that building great relationships is essential.” n

From the very beginning, Max Gurwicz Enterprises has had its finger on the pulse of Atlantic County. The company began in 1954 when aspiring developer Max Gurwicz and his son Edward made a rather daring move — they purchased land in Northfield. With all the hustle and bustle of Northfield today, this might seem like an obvious choice, but in those days, most people lived on Absecon Island.
As it turns out, they were onto something. That Northfield property became Ridgewood Estates, a large community with some of the area’s first state-ofthe-art residences, and it drew families from the island to the mainland. That was just the beginning.
For the next almost 70 years, Max Gurwicz Enterprises has grown exponentially. Currently under the leadership of Edward Gurwicz (who is now in his 90s and continues to come to the office daily) and his two sons, Joseph Gurwicz and Mitchell Gurwicz, this family business spans three generations. This trio continues the company’s core mission of providing quality developments of all types in the Greater Atlantic County Region.
Evolving with the times, the company has developed a multitude of real estate projects including but not limited to several low and high-rise condominiums, townhouses, single-family home communities, apartments, hotels, shopping centers, and one beloved golf course — Harbor Pines Golf Club.
“Our company started from building single-family homes,” says Mitchell. “In the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, there was a big trend nationwide on residential golf course communities. At that

time, we accumulated a lot of raw land in Egg Harbor Township for single-family development, but when the trend exploded in the late ‘90s, we were ready to provide this very popular product in this area.”
In 1995, Harbor Pines Estates opened, and a year later, so did Harbor Pines Golf Club. This community boasts more than 650 acres and includes a residential neighborhood in addition to a full-service golf club that’s open to the public. And rather than simply moving on to the next project, in true Gurwicz fashion, when Harbor Pines Golf Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2022, the company used that milestone to do what it has always done — evolve with the times with the announcement of a three-part expansion plan. As Mitchell said at the anniversary celebration, “25 years isn’t a time to rest, it’s a time to re-invest.”
When Harbor Pines first opened, the golf business and customers were very different. Now golfers are more sophisticated, residents are more engaged and the general public and golfers alike seek new and more modern entertainment and dining venues. With that in mind, stage one of the expansion was to build a new state-of-theart pro shop that was completed in 2022. Stocked with the latest clothing and equipment trends, the pro shop, like the course and club, is open to the public with experts on hand to guide your purchases.
The new pro shop opened the space needed for stage two — a new dedicated bar and restaurant with an independent kitchen and a new deck overlooking the 1st and 18th holes.
“Over time it became apparent that we needed an additional dedicated venue for daily food
Leisureand beverage, in addition to our banquet and event space, situated in a way that took advantage of the amazing views we have here at Harbor Pines,” says Mitchell.
With that, The Roost Pub & Grill, a modern, hip space with a great vibe that includes 2500 sf of indoor space and 2000 sf of outdoor seating, opened in May 2023. With its exposed brick and beams, thick butcher block tabletops, and a leathered granite bar top, the indoor space can be characterized as an “industrial farmhouse.” The outside space features both high and low-top dining under umbrellas, comfy lounge seating, and Adirondack chairs by the fire pit — providing that perfect laid-back spot for enjoying food, friends, and amazing sunsets over the golf course.
“The Roost promises to be a go-to spot to enjoy delicious and hearty pub food, cocktails with friends, and of course, post-round drinks. Also, with the introduction of weekly live music, it’s pretty spectacular, if I do say so myself,” says Mitchell.
The final stage of the Harbor Pines Golf Club expansion is updating the banquet facility, which is happening now. The existing ballroom will be completely redone, enlarged, and modernized, capitalizing on its prime location and unbeatable views. It will be ready to welcome weddings and special events this spring.
With a huge renovation to an already thriving golf course, one might think that Harbor Pines Golf Course was the crown jewel of Max Gurwicz Enterprises. However, while Harbor Pines is definitely special to the Gurwicz family, there isn’t a favorite project. Just a favorite way of doing business — evolving with the times. n
Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Tracy Morgan, and Sharon Osbourne have been raving about semaglutide for weight loss, and with good reason. Marketed under the brand names Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, this medication is skyrocketing in popularity, making the semaglutide industry a multi-billion dollar market almost overnight. The frenzy to get semaglutide has even led to a global shortage.
Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to the class of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Approved by the FDA for type 2 diabetes management, the weekly injectable Ozempic led to rapid weight loss in diabetes patients, prompting it to be prescribed “off label” for the treatment of obesity. Rybelsus tablets are approved to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy injectable is a more potent form of this drug and is the only FDA-approved semiglutide for weight loss.
Semaglutide mimics the effects of GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone that prompts the body to produce more insulin and improve glucose levels. It may also provide a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. In higher amounts, it interacts with the brain to suppress appetite and create a feeling of fullness. Essentially, it reduces hunger and keeps us fuller longer, so we eat less.
Chris M., a Civil Engineering Tech from Egg Harbor Township, is one of the many people who have benefited from Wegovy. After gaining weight due to some of her mental health medications, Chris went to an endocrinologist for help. At 5’8” and 195 pounds, Chris had high blood pressure and a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMI) over 30, considered obese, making her eligible for Wegovy. However, before she could begin the medication, she had to follow a threemonth weight-loss program recommended by a nutritionist. At the end of three months, she had lost only five pounds.
Wegovy made her efforts much easier. In just under a year, Chris has lost 48 pounds, and she plans to stay on it until she reaches her goal of 139 pounds. The only side effects she experienced were loss of appetite and nausea in the first few weeks. However, she says, “I would get nauseous after I ate. I learned fast that it was from the portion sizes I was having. As soon as I cut those down, that went away.” In addition to Wegovy, she adopted healthier habits such as portion control, reduced calorie intake, and
increased physical activity, all of which contributed to her success. She stopped eating out of boredom and learned to chew her food slowly and taste the flavors of food. When asked if she feels better after losing weight, she responds, “So much!
Physically, it helped me with all the inflammation I had in my body, and I feel great. I don’t look at it as a diet anymore. It really is a better way to eat.”
According to endocrinologist Dr. Samar Bursheh, owner and medical director of Nutriamed in Egg Harbor
Semaglutide is not a magic weight-loss bullet or a free pass to eat whatever we want and still lose weight.
Township, semaglutide is not a magic weight-loss bullet or a free pass to eat whatever we want and still lose weight. The FDA approved the medication for weight loss “in addition to diet and exercise.” Those are keywords, meaning it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
“It works best with lifestyle changes,” says Dr. Bursheh, passionate about helping her patients with “lifestyle medicine” at Nutriamed. In addition to medical consultations, Nutriamed offers fitness programs, nutrition counseling, and healthy cooking classes.
Dr. Bursheh recommends a three to six-month customized program to
learn about healthy lifestyle changes before beginning this medication. She says many people are willing to do the work but need this kickstart.
“If you are not on medication, your body will try to get you back to your baseline line weight because it will think you are starving. These medications help the body understand that you don’t need to fight weight loss.” For those who don’t make changes, “It will work initially, but then they plateau three to six months after starting.” Plus, without physical activity and a nutritious diet, patients may lose muscle along with fat. The ultimate goal is more than losing weight. It is achieving better health and a fit and functional body.
She explains, “You must be mentally ready to utilize all the tools we have to help you lose weight.
This medication is only a tool.
If you don’t have the proper foundation, the tool will stop working. It is no miracle drug, but it is a very efficient drug.”
The long-term effects of semaglutide are still unknown. However, we do know the long-term consequences of diabetes and obesity, which are heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some forms of cancer.
Semaglutide injections are indicated for people with a BMI of 28 or more with comorbidities or a BMI of 30 or more with no comorbidities. Like any drug, it should be used appropriately and under medical supervision.
This medication is not a magic potion to slim down for summer or lose 15 pounds for your daughter’s wedding. “However,” says Dr. Bursheh, “For those with diabetes or obesity, the benefits outweigh the risks.”
Semaglutide is only approved for weight loss under the brand name Wegovy. The typical dose for weight loss is 2.4 milligrams, administered weekly as subcutaneous (under the skin) self-injections. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor will start you on a low dose first to decrease your risk of stomach/abdominal side effects and gradually increase your
dose.
Not recommended for everyone, semaglutide may cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and constipation. If you experience abdominal pain, nausea, minimal urine, thirst, dizziness, pale skin, or any mental/mood changes, contact your doctor immediately. Before using semaglutide, read your pharmacist’s medication guide and instructions. With a price tag of more than $1,000 per month, it is very expensive.
When it comes to any medications, we should do our research and consider the risks and benefits.
However, if you qualify, your insurance may cover it.
Finally, the incredible demand for semaglutide has led to dubious marketing, questionable online sales, and failures to address the underlying causes of disease. If you are interested in semaglutide, visit a respected medical professional and use a reputable pharmacy.
When it comes to any medications, we should do our research and consider the risks and benefits. With the input of medical and other health professionals, we need to make the best choice for us. n

Unleashing the Cyberbeast: Tesla’s futuristic all-electric super truck redefines rugged luxury. From its lightning-fast acceleration to its innovative features, explore the Beast’s beastly exterior, luxurious interior, and versatile usability, as Tesla sets the stage for a new era in electric utility vehicles.
By Molly GolubcowThe Chaîne des Rôtisseurs invites all lovers of gastronomy, good food and fine wines to share its values of excellence and camaraderie, uniting us in the continuation of great culinary traditions. Join the Atlantic City Bailliage!
Tesla has done it again. The innovative company has come up with an all-electric super truck that travels up to 340 miles on a single charge. When in “beast” mode, it goes 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds but handles like a sports car thanks to steer-by-wire and rear steering. It’s versatile — you can haul a 2,500-pound payload or take it to a tailgate party. At first glance, it looks like an overgrown Transformer toy that James Bond and Mad Max designed together. So, what is this armored personnel carrier wannabe called? Say hello to the Cyberbeast.
Offered in three models: tri-motor all-wheel drive (AWD), dual-motor AWD, and rear-wheel drive (RWD) models, Tesla marketing touts their latest creation as a vehicle “built for any planet.” In late 2023, Tesla started taking orders for the Cyberbeast ranging in price from $61,000 to $100,000 — depending on power and amenities.
No question about it, the Cyberbeast is rugged, but sort of futuristically beautiful as well. It is a definite attention grabber, so be prepared for people to stare at your vehicle when stopped at a red light. Built from an ultra-hard stainless-steel exoskeleton, problems like dents, dings, and long-term corrosion are almost nonexistent. And, if needed, repairs are simple and quick since there are no paint issues involved.
The truck is fully equipped with armored glass, including an all-glass roof, that can resist getting slammed by a baseball at 70 mph. In addition, the acoustically designed glass provides a quiet ride no matter what noises are going on around you.
Like a gentle giant, the Beast may be rugged on the outside, but very much tame and relaxed inside. The spacious interior comfortably seats five adults immersed in a spacious, modern cabin. Advanced technology features include fast-charge capabilities for

phones, laptops, or power tools from the front or back seat as well as in the bed area with wireless charging. In addition, the Cyberbeast comes with built-in hospital-grade HEPA cabin filters to help protect 99.97% of airborne particles.
Another example of creature comfort in this Beast is a large 18.5” infinity touchscreen in the front and a 9.4” touchscreen in the back. In addition, the sound system is out of this world — 15 speakers, including two dedicated subwoofers and distributed amplifiers.
As a rugged utility truck, the Cyberbeast can haul up to 2.5 tons of stuff, recreational or professional. The tough-as-nails 6’x4’ composite bed does not require a liner and is big enough for 4’x8’ construction materials. For security purposes, the Cyberbeast comes with 67 cubic feet of lockable storage. In addition, the truck easily tows 11,000 pounds — that’s equivalent to an African elephant or two and a half Mercedes Maybach 560s.
For recreational purposes, the Cyberbeast is ready to accommodate your needs. With all-terrain tires, you are covered driving in and over any environment from mountains to the beach. For camping trips, the Cyberbeast can transform into an ultra-light tent. The optional attachment, shaped like a geodesic airframe, inflates in minutes without the need for any structural poles.

Some people may ask, “What kind of warmth can you expect from a place with ice in its name”? Surprisingly enough, you will feel welcomed the minute you land at Keflavík International. As you pass by airport stores and cafes, you get a sneak preview of what your visit to Iceland will be like — the warmest wool sweaters, comfy robes for a dip in a thermal pool, a potent shot of Reyka vodka, and souvenir posters of the magnificent Northern Lights.
Founded by Vikings 1,000 years ago, Iceland — a country as well as an island — is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Whether you visit in the summer or winter, geographic wonders like black sand beaches, volcano craters, active geysers, and impressive waterfalls are plentiful. In addition, the marvel of witnessing the Northern Lights is a sight to behold.
If you are not a nature nut, Iceland offers concerts, healing spas, and slews of museums.
Strolling Around Reykjavik
Reykjavik, the world’s most northernmost capital, is packed with lots of things to see and do. If you are a museum-goer, the charming city hosts many options like the National Museum of Iceland and the Settlement Exhibition — for a historical perspective. The Perlan Museum features a panoramic planetarium that immerses you in Iceland’s
natural wonder — the Aurora Borealis. And, unique to Iceland, check out the Phallic Museum. No joke. The serious/ scientific museum is dedicated to anything phallic. Yes, there is a gift shop!
As you stroll down Laugavegur Street, the picturesque and hipster shopping area, you will no doubt be tempted by unique goods and crafts that only Iceland can produce. Although it is just a little longer than a mile, lots of shopping opportunities call to you from souvenir Icelandic wool sweaters (a must-buy) to mineralpacked cosmetics made from local volcanic ingredients and minerals.
Another hallmark sight in Reykjavik is the Harpa Concert Hall. Located on the Old Harbor, the building is an architectural wonder. Shaped a bit off-kilter, the modern building’s exterior of LED-lit glass cubes is stunning when illuminated at night. Inside, the acoustics are beyond phenomenal. Try to take in a concert or get a tour of the “guts” behind the sound and light systems.
Iceland is not only surrounded by water but offers many water wonders on land. Formed from thousands of years of volcanic activity, the countryside beckons you with breathtaking waterfalls, glaciers, and geysers. As a convenience for tourists, Mother Nature seems to have arranged many of Iceland’s must-see natural wonders around the 186-mile route called the Golden Circle. Located in the southwestern part of Iceland, tour operators are always available to take you around the island.
Highlights include Thingvellir National Park, Strokkur Waterspout, and the Gullfoss Waterfall. Originating from the nearby Langjökull Glacier, the powerful Gullfoss waters cascade down 105 feet in two separate flows — a sight to behold.
If you are a hiker, Iceland combines stunning places to see water, ice, and more. Drew Gilbert, an avid hiker, explains what sold him on Iceland, “My fiancé and I wanted a vacation to do

non-stop hiking with amazing views, and that’s exactly what we got. Our favorite site was the Skaftafell Glacier — a once-in-a-lifetime experience — and it was beautiful. The glacier will be gone in years to come, so something about being on the glacier was even more meaningful.”
A trip to Iceland is not complete without a dip in one of its many natural thermal pools. Although the pool/lagoon is man-made, the Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular (and touristy) places to splash about. The warm waters, a byproduct of the adjoining thermal plant, produce a soothing and relaxing area to absorb natural salts and minerals. The Blue Lagoon offers plenty of amenities, from lockers and cafes to pamper-mebig-time spas and hotels.
The Northern Lights, known as the Aurora Borealis, occur when solar particles ionize high in the atmosphere. As a result, the sky becomes a kaleidoscope of mostly wafting greens and blues that illuminate Northern skies. Since Iceland is located so close to the Arctic Pole, you may be able to catch a glimpse even from a high point in Reykjavik. However, you have a better chance of seeing a more vibrant sky by heading out of the city. Important Note: Even during high season (September through April), seeing the lights is not a given — weather and other atmospheric activity can literally cloud your view.
Tours are plentiful. You can opt for a 3-hour bus tour that will take you to areas where the skies are clear and unobstructed.
Other options include a 4-hour Jeep ride to smaller, secluded spots — and hot chocolate provided! If you are a die-hard Aurora Borealis hunter, you may want to spend a few nights enjoying the skies by signing up for a multi-day tour.
Another option is a 3-hour boat tour out of the Old Harbor in Reykjavik. If you don’t see any lights that night, the captain will let you return another night, free of charge. n

Since the mid-19th century, nature has played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic landscape of America. The Hudson River School painters, led by artists like Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt, embraced the vastness and grandeur of the American wilderness, capturing awe-inspiring landscapes that spoke to a burgeoning sense of national identity. As the country expanded westward, artists like Frederic Edwin Church ventured into uncharted territories, translating the sublime beauty of untamed nature onto canvases that mirrored the nation’s manifest destiny. Fast-forward to the 20th century and nature’s influence can be seen in the regionalist works of Grant Wood and the abstracted landscapes of Georgia O’Keeffe. From the sublime wilderness to the nuanced interplay of urban and natural environments, American artists have continued to draw inspiration from the ever-evolving relationship with the diverse landscapes that define their nation.
The New Jersey landscape has become an inexhaustible muse for artists, weaving its way into the fabric of artistic expression across various movements and media. New Jersey artists like Bob Boyd and Allison Tyler Soucy play a pivotal role in raising environmental concerns, using their art to raise awareness about the fragile
state of our planet. As a photographer living near the beaches and wetlands, Bob has been exposed to the endless cycle of wildlife and landscapes that change each season. “The first time I captured a bird in flight, I strongly desired to improve my skills and capture more of these majestic creatures in motion. My focus is on capturing these creatures’ beauty, grace, and incredible ability to survive in the wild.” As a photographer, the quality of light always plays a crucial factor that determines the outcome of a photograph, and Bob takes full advantage of the opportunity that presents itself just before and after sunrise and sunset.
“I find my initial inspiration in realistic images. My work captures a dynamic and striking moment in nature, which can only be experienced through a still capture.” Although Bob appreciates traditional photography, he is particularly drawn to images created through “Photo Artistry.” This process involves using Photoshop to create a layered and exciting work of art, where the starting point is an excellent photographic image. The photograph freezes the action, inviting the audience to observe the details, colors, beauty, and

By Bob Boydtextures that often go unnoticed by the naked eye. The story is about the changes with each season, the quiet yet powerful response of wildlife, and the landscape that goes unnoticed. The audience is invited to witness the mighty play behind the scenes and before our eyes.
Nature has the power to evoke emotions and memories. For Allison, being human is often tragic and, at the same time, full of enchantment. Over the years, she has had her share of both while striving to live in an atmosphere full of wonder and delight. “That feeling of being startled by nature is what I hope to create in my art. That element of the unexpected, the catch of breath upon seeing something singular and wild, brings me fully present, even if only momentarily.”
Many artists find a unique balance between realism and interpretation in their nature-themed pieces. Allison’s structures created in nature may be fantastic. Still, she aims to blend them with their environments in ways that could make a passerby wonder if they’re seeing a naturally occurring phenomenon. “That’s the hook for me. I love that moment of pause and ponder.”
Allison admires but has never felt the pull to create realism, so her abilities are primitive, abstract, and whimsical, not realistic. The oddities of the natural world fascinate Allison through anomaly, asymmetry, and wonkiness. She loves finding and working with bones, carapaces, and kooky things to provide a solid connection to the dead. “It’s intentionally precarious and ephemeral because everything is precarious and ephemeral.”
Contemporary nature art reflects a dynamic interplay between artists and the environment. Artists like Bob and Allison employ diverse mediums and innovative techniques to explore humanity’s complex relationship with nature in the face of ecological and humanitarian challenges. Their work invites viewers to experience ecosystems firsthand, from traditional representation to an environment fostering a renewed appreciation for the beauty and fragility of the natural world. n

As I enter my 20th retail year in the wine business, the consumer is thirsty for knowledge, more than ever. I know this by the questions I receive and the attendance at our events and classes. For this, I express my gratitude for allowing me/Passion Vines to play a part in your wine journey. Let’s jump in…
Sue W. from Margate asks, “I love oysters, but always hesitate on the pairing. What do you suggest?”
Hi, Sue!! I love your question. I just returned from a trip to NYC where we visited a traditional oyster bar. I want you to focus on 3 words: brininess, minerality, and acidity. That’s it! A classic pairing with oysters is a crisp, dry white wine such as Muscadet or Chablis. These wines have high acidity and minerality that complement the brininess of oysters beautifully. Champagne or a good quality sparkling wine can also be an excellent choice!
My personal choice: Domaine de la Bregeonnette Muscadet Sevre et Maine 2022 ($19)
Donna B. from Somers Point asks, “How do I know if a wine is Organic?”
We are asked this question a lot, Donna. To determine if a wine is organic, you have two options. Scenario one: you’re solo, in the wine aisle, without any resources to help. We’ve all been there and sometimes prefer it that way. You should look for certification labels on the bottle. In the United States, a “USDA Organic” seal indicates the wine meets strict production and handling standards. In Europe, the “EU organic” logo serves a similar purpose. Additionally, the wine should have certification from an accredited organic certifying agency; another trick, when you’re solo, is to know the importer located on the back label. Every imported wine must list its importer. The best importers are very strict in their buying standards, and once you know that they specialize in sourcing “organic wines,” then you can trust them.
This is especially helpful because many wineries follow organic methods without certification.
Scenario two: ask for assistance!
Our team loves to answer questions, especially related to “integrity” and
“standards.” As I often say, there are wines made in a boardroom and wines made in a vineyard… always choose the latter. Lastly, read the label carefully, as there’s a difference between wines “made with organic grapes” and those that are fully certified organic.
My current favorite Organic dry red: Azienda Agricola La Torre Rosso di Montalcino 2021 ($39)
Tom W. from Linwood asks, “What’s the difference between organic and biodynamic?”
Tom, a great piggyback question to Donna’s above. Organic farming focuses on growing grapes without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms, relying on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods. Biodynamic farming goes beyond organic practices, incorporating ideas about a vineyard as an entire ecosystem. It includes the use of organic farming methods but also follows the biodynamic calendar and involves preparations made from fermented manure, minerals, and herbs. Biodynamics considers broader cosmic influences and rhythms, with the aim of creating a self-sustaining system. Both aim for sustainability and environmental harmony, but biodynamic farming includes more esoteric concepts and is often seen as a more holistic approach.
My current favorite Biodynamic white wine: Paolo Bea Santa Chiara Umbria Bianco 2019 ($59)
Bill D. from Brigantine asks, “How should wine be stored?”
Hey, Bill! Important note: 90%+ of wine on the shelf is made to be consumed quickly/now. This means that attention to detail regarding storage matters less. I will answer your question through the lens of “age-worthy” wine, which is wine that will “get better” (also subjective) with time… Wine should be stored in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature, ideally around 55°F (13°C). Bottles should be kept on their sides to keep the cork moist, which helps prevent it from drying out and allowing air to enter the bottle, potentially spoiling the wine. Vibrations should be minimized, and the space should have adequate humidity to prevent corks from drying out.
For those new to my column, please email me your wine question/s, and I’ll answer! It’s that simple.
With gratitude,

Grab a big soup spoon, and let’s slurp up some local places where you can get that “Umm, Umm Good” feeling.
By Molly GolubcowEver since early man and woman figured out how to a.) build a fire and b.) carve a bowl out of a stone, soup has literally warmed our bellies for thousands of years. Whether clear broths or chunky chowders, cultures from around the world have created their own version of what constitutes a liquid meal. From Texas to Taiwan, people find comfort in concoctions made with veggies, meat, spices, and a pinch of love that simmers for hours until it becomes a bowl of Pho, Mulligatawny, Borsht, or Cream of Broccoli.
So, grab a big soup spoon, and let’s slurp up some local places where you can get that “Umm, Umm Good” feeling.
Whether based on psychological or medicinal theories, a bowl of soup quickly reminds us of Grandma’s love, cozy nights by a fire, or a homeopathic way to fight the flu. According to a study published in Psychology Today, “…eating hot soup or even just holding a warm cup of it may increase positive feelings.”
For example, chicken soup has become known as “Jewish penicillin.” In addition to the psychological aspect of that golden broth making you feel better, scientific data supports the healing ingredients found in chicken fat. Most soups, veggie or meat-based, are jam-packed with nutrients ranging from vitamins A through K to niacin, riboflavin, and zinc.
Buddy Della Fave, owner of Downbeach Deli in Margate, NJ, has sold a matzoh ball or two in his career.
According to Della Fave, “I estimate that we sell about 7,500 quarts of matzoh ball soup a year, not counting all the cups and bowls we sell in the restaurant.”
Soup more than any other food equates to memories. According to Chef Salvatore Giambrone, Queen Bean Bistro in Ventnor, NJ, soup is one of his favorite things to create. “Making soup reminds me of my childhood. If I was feeling sick, my mother would make soup, adding a little white pepper for flavor. For me,
a bowl of soup is like being a kid again.”
The world gets more global every day, and soup is no exception. Like other ethnic cuisine, soups offer flavorful ingredients that were once uncommon to the American palette — Chinese and Japanese options like Won Ton, Hot & Sour, and Miso. You can also find interesting soups in non-Asian restaurants as well. For example, the Good Dog Bar in Atlantic City offers a Miso Chicken & Tofu soup packed with oyster mushrooms, scallions, and a sesame oil drizzle.
7 Sisters in Pleasantville, NJ “bowls” you over with their authentic Vietnamese soups like Pho — a full and steamy bowl of delight packed with noodles, veggies, and any meat, tofu, or seafood you can think of. For example, the Đặc Biệt is filled to the brim with rare steak, flank, brisket, tendons, tripe, and beef meatballs. For vegetarians, the Bún Bò Huế Chay offers a flavorful no-meat broth with vermicelli and a slew of Hue-style spicy veggies. All soups are then topped off with trimmings like jalapenos, sprouts, cabbage, and Thai basil.
Chef Hien Tran puts hours of “love” into the broths she creates. “Our broth is authentic to the region in Vietnam where it comes from. I don’t believe in one broth for all soups. Depending on the kind of soup, ingredients like ginger, lemongrass, and scallions simmer in their own pot for at least eight hours until it is just right — it’s our signature at 7 Sisters.”
For south-of-the-border soup options, Isabella’s in Ventnor, NJ offers Sopa Azteca — complete with crispy corn tortillas, sour cream, cheese, and avocado. Another Latino choice is Caldo Cammerones — a shrimp and veggie seafood soup at Sabor Salvadoreno in Atlantic City.
Indian food lovers, do not feel abandoned. Nizam’s in Egg Harbor Township serves up a rich, flavorful soup — Mulligatawny, delicately spiced with fresh vegetables and lentil puree.
Another characteristic of many soups is the chunk factor — pieces of chicken, beef, seafood, and veggies that scream for a fork instead of a spoon. For example, in Atlantic City, the Corn & Crab Chowder at Dock’s is full of corn and crab pieces. Likewise, the

Knife & Fork serves up hearty bowls of love in their Tuscan Three Bean Soup. Another Italian favorite, Pasta E Fagioli, from Girasole in Atlantic City is a meal in and of itself — packed with homemade traditional Neapolitan pasta and beans.
And, what list would be complete without the mention of French Onions Soup? Smithville Inn offers a bowl filled with onions, herbs, beef broth, and three smothered cheeses. It may not be the best menu choice for a first date, but wrapping the long and stringy cheeses around your spoon and into your mouth is delicious — don’t forget to sop up the onions and broth with some crusty bread. n Visit NJLifestyleMag.com for more suggestions on local soup spots.

Could another 4 years of a Biden Presidency make the stock market go down? What if Donald Trump reclaims the presidency? We took a look back over the last 40+ years to see if any conclusions could be drawn from the past.
Ronald Reagan: 1981-1989 (Republican)
40 years ago, America elected Ronald Reagan to be the President. Many were concerned that this former actor lacked the experience needed.
Some were afraid he would cause a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, or that Reaganomics would trigger a depression. The stock market proved less fearful, posting a 14.2% average annual return throughout his 8-year presidency.
George Herbert Walker Bush: 1989-1993 (Republican)
George H.W. Bush succeeded Reagan having gained experience for the job while serving as Reagan’s V.P. Some Americans may have worried that he wouldn’t have the same leadership to keep the economy rolling, however, the S&P 500 continued performing posting a 15.7% average annual return throughout his 4-year term.
Bill Clinton: 1993-2001 (Democrat)
With the Democrats seizing power from the 1992 election, some thought that higher taxes and increased regulation would doom the stock market. Amazingly, stocks kept moving higher, posting a whopping 17.2% average annual return throughout his 8-year presidency. History would prove that a Democratic President did not cool the stock market as stocks overheated and even bubbled up towards the end of Clinton’s second term.
George Walker Bush: 2001-2009 (Republican)
The economy went into recession shortly after George W. Bush was signed into office. This was triggered by the dot com bubble bursting and rising interest rates. While the economy and stock market recovered through most of the rest of his presidency, the stock market crashed towards the end of his 2nd term as a deep recession rocked markets around the world. The great financial crisis caused the S&P 500 to decline 37% during Bush’s final year and while he left office with stocks at a very low point, his presidency saw a negative (2.9%) annual return of the S&P 500 while he was in office.
Barack Obama: 2009-2017 (Democrat)
Barack Obama was another President who was elected and some viewed him as being inexperienced. While stocks were at a low point when he was signed into office, the economy recovered, and investors
saw a 14.5% annual return on the S&P 500 through his two-term presidency. Once again stocks performed well despite modest tax increases and regulation.
Donald Trump: 2017- Present (Republican)
In 2016, clients often asked if the market would plunge if Donald Trump won the presidency. Dow Futures actually did plunge overnight upon his victory, however, the next day stocks rallied back with the Dow closing 256 points higher. Things continued rallying through the end of 2016 and the S&P 500 rose over 21% the following year. While the Coronavirus saw stocks plummet 33% in March of 2020, overall stocks advanced 13.7% annually throughout Donald Trump’s 4-year term.
Joe Biden: 2020- Present (Democrat)
Stocks continued advancing after Joe Biden took office with stocks rising almost 27% in 2021. While 2022 was a rough year for stocks (-18%), they rebounded the following year, and in 2024 stocks have reached new all-time highs shrugging off inflation and fears of a recession that never came (yet at least).
Conclusion
When looking at past administrations and how the markets performed, a clear conclusion as to which party the market prefers cannot be drawn. The one thing that we can conclude is that markets tend to go up over time no matter which party is in office. Looking at past returns through different administrations has allowed us to see that since 1980 the stock market has earned an average annual rate of return of just over 10%. There have been many Presidents, wars, and even pandemics that have come and gone, but having an investment in the market over a long period has proven successful through simply buying and holding. As always, time in the market as opposed to timing in the market is where wealth accumulation is achieved. n
