INTROducing Mint '14

Mint ’14 is the innovative and eclectic event promoting fashion recycling and ethical practice, designed specifically for the students of Loughborough University. Taking place on Saturday 22nd February, the Mint team are launching their very first charity Fashion Show and Thrift Shop event at Loughborough University Student Union. The event aims to promote responsible and sustainable fashion, the use of recycled clothing. Mint is devoted fundraising event for Unicef’s Syria Appeal, aiming to raise a lot of money for the cause. Mint are a non-profit organisation (NPO), run by a team of dedicated volunteers – committed to revolutionise your opinions about sustainable fashion, inspiring you to make a difference. We aim to make a difference through our events, taking Mint to multiple venues and encouraging individuals all over the UK to create and innovate with clothing with existing material. We aim to inspire, promote recycled fashion and charitable action through the student community.

1

ABOUT MINT '14 Mint ‘14 was founded in 2013 by the curator and art director, Natalie Kaye Goldsmith. After an extensive ideation, the event was pitched to universities all over the UK, including Loughborough University. The event was positively received and plans began to emerge. A year later, after recruiting a large team of volunteers, headed by 6 extremely dedicated coordinators (see page 8), this event has been possible! Striving to improve the lives of those supported in Unicef’s Syria Appeal (see page 6), Mint ‘14 endeavors to encourage charitability in the student community, alongside making a difference by promoting both recycling of material and sustainable fashion practice. Mint ‘14 provides both a social platform and point of sale - a direct accessibility to some of the most eclectic and original hand-selected thrift clothing sourced from charitable donations. Mint ‘14 also provides a promotional channel for new young designers to exhibit their recycled clothing creations. 2

The Fashion Show exhibits “The Recycled Fashion Competition”, whereby budding textile designers (and amateurs alike) are invited to flaunt their creations live on the catwalk. The show aims to inspire and challenge you as both spectators and participants. In a buzzing atmosphere accompanied by live music and DJ sets, with cocktail bars at your disposal, you can expect a night packed with entertainment, inspiration and creativity. The Thrift Shop, open on both Saturday 22nd (day/night) and Sunday 23rd February (day), is your platform for indulging in recycled bargains. The events team have been working hard to source only the most current and eclectic range of recycled clothing, perfect for your upcoming SS14 wardrobes. All money raised in the Thrift Shop will be donated directly to Unicef’s Syria Appeal, alike with all funds raised throughout the event. The store remains open until 1am on event night - this late night shopping experience will be one to remember.

CURATORS LETTER Welcome to Mint ‘14! First and foremost, I’d like to say a huge thank you for coming! I’m Natalie, the curator and art director of Mint ‘14. I began my venture in Summer 2013, where I began to ideate the combination of two of my key passions and hobbies; fashion and charity. Inspired and motivated by making a difference in this world, we strive to create a mind-blowing innovative event that you will never forget. This is not your standard fashion show - it’s eclectic twist and incredible combination with a thrift store - what more could you want? Not only is this a brilliant opportunity to be inspired by the recycled creations of the industries up-and-coming designers (or maybe even bid for them!), it’s the perfect place to purchase “new” clothing to begin to fill your SS14 wardrobes! Be sure to visit the Thrift Shop, pick up some bargains and get creative.

NATALIE KAYE GOLDSMITH CURATOR & ART DIRECTOR

At Mint ‘14, we have designed this event to engage you, create positive attitudes towards recycling fashion and to encourage charitability. Unicef’s Syria Appeal is a cause in serious need of funds to make a difference to the lives of many suffering; I invite you to support our competition designers, visit the Thrift Shop, purchase one of our exciting MintBox’s full of wonderful little treats or simply donate as generously as you like in any way, shape or form. This will, in turn, help us to reach our much-desired goals. I’d like to take this opportunity thank my extremely determined and committed team for all their hard work and ambition. And to you, we thank you for your amazing support. Together we can make a difference. 3

about the fashion show

The Fashion Show exhibits “The Recycled Fashion Competition”, whereby fashion designers and amateurs alike are invited to design and exhibit their finest recycled fashion pieces. Aiming to influence, inspire and challenge the norms of fashion design and style, this competition allows a platform for designers to be creative and original - creating pieces for the catwalk that reflect Mint ‘14 sustainability ethos. The show aims to inspire and challenge both the spectators and the participants, encouraging interactivity and involvement with the process of recycling. The fashion show, consisting of two parts, will run for a total of 1hr 15 minutes, displaying the eclectic and elaborate designs of our creatives. The winners of the Mint ’14 Awards, explained below, will be announced at the end of the show. The receipt of a Mint ‘14 Award will open a variety of huge opportunities for the winning designer. The show will both begin and be concluded by a selection of live music performances; including The Beasty Traps, Dexter White and Violet Class.

ABOUT THE THRIFT SHOP

opening times

We have designed the Thrift Shop experience as one that’ll change your opinion of charitable and second-hand clothing sales. Our late night shopping experience, on Saturday night, is designed to create an exciting, inspiring and buzzing atmosphere - where you can begin to fill your SS14 wardrobes. The store is open between 12pm and 5pm, then again between 7pm and 1am at the evening event. We re-open on Sunday 23rd between 11am and 6pm, for those last minute buys.

The Thrift Shop is your platform for indulging your money-savvy selves in recycled bargains. The events team have been working extremely hard to source only the most current, stylish and eclectic range of recycled clothing that is perfect for your upcoming SS14 wardrobes. Over the past few months, the Mint team have advertised for clothing donations , mainly from the local area of Loughborough, to gather a large quantity of clothing - to be recycled and sold on. The clothing has been extensively sort with only the most elite of items taking pole position upon the selective rails of our store. Clothing with less appeal or in questionable condition was distributed to other charitable causes, as well as being donated to the designers of the Fashion Show Competition as raw materials. Out of the 1000s of clothes donated, the store has a large selection of current, good condition second hand clothing for you to rummage through to your hearts content, cocktail in hand. Fantastic quality clothing and the bargain prices to match, make this original shopping experience one to remember, all in the aid of charity. All money raised in the Thrift Shop will be donated directly to Unicef’s Syria Appeal, alike with all funds raised throughout the event.

UNICEF SYRIA CRISIS APPEAL “ This one millionth child refugee is not just another number. This is a real child ripped from home, maybe even from a family, facing horrors we can only begin to comprehend.” (Unicef Executive Director Anthony Lake “With the crisis in Syria is deep into its third year, more than one million Syrian children have now been forced to flee their country. Children have been killed, forced from their homes, seen unimaginable violence and lost family members and friends. Many are struggling to get an education and are living in makeshift shelters and camps, where they are at increased risk of disease as the summer temperatures rise. Caught in the horrors of war, children are at risk of losing their childhood and their future. The fear, stress and trauma experienced by so many children is just part of the human crisis.” “One in every five schools has been damaged or destroyed or is being used as a shelter. As the start of a new school year approaches, children are at risk of missing out on the chance to rebuild their lives through learning.”

36

INFORMATION SOURCED WWW.UNICEF.ORG.UK

THE CRISIS “The systematic destruction of health, education, water and sanitation services not only hampers with life-saving support, it also adds grave challenges for the future.” “Children are being exposed to grave human rights violations including sexual violence and torture. For over two years, stories of children being killed, maimed, tortured and used as fights have been falling on deaf ears. Unicef - alongside UN agencies - urges governments to urgently find a political solution to end this crisis. Parties to the conflict must stop targeting civilians and cease recruitment of children. Children and their families must be safe to leave Syria and borders must remain open so they can cross safely.” “Unicef is working night and day for the children of Syria. We are providing children in Syria and refugee children in the five neighboring countries - Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt - with safe drinking water and sanitation, vaccines, education and psychological support. Unicef is one of the few international organisations with permanent presence in Syria.”

mint '14 support Every single penny that comes into the hands of the team at Mint ‘14 will be donated to Unicef’s Syria Crisis Appeal to fight this very cause. The cost of your tickets, the revenue from the Thrift Shop, merchandise and MintBox’s alongside all additional donations made at the event will go to Syria. The Team have worked hard to keep costs to bare minimum, with the aid of our sponsors, to ensure maximum donation to Unicef.

UNICEF AT WORK 2013 In 2013, Unicef worked to vaccinate nearly 2.4 million children against measles. They helped more than 260,000 children to continue education. They provided more than 10.2 million people with safe water. They also gave psychological support to over 380,000 children. In June, the UN launched its largest - ever humanitarian appeal. US $3 billion was expected to be required in order to meet the acute needs of refugees until December 2013. Unicef is appealing for over £300 million of this meet the needs of Syria’s children - the same amount as UK holiday makers spent on sunglasses in 2012! INFORMATION SOURCED WWW.UNICEF.ORG.UK

UNICEF SYRIA CRISIS APPEAL

“Unicef is the world’s leading organisation for children. We work with families, local communities, partners and government in more than 190 countries to help every child realise their full potential. In everything we do, the most disadvantaged children and the countries in greatest need have priority. Unicef UK raises funds for Unicef’s emergency and development work around the world and advocates for lasting change for children worldwide. This includes working to change government policies and practices that restrict child rights in the UK and internationally. We are a registered charity, supported entirely by voluntary donations. Unicef UK provides health care, water, nutrition, education and protection for children. We do whatever it takes to make a lasting difference to children’s lives. The money you raise will help us to carry on with out life-changing work.” (Unicef, 2012) “The largest humanitarian operation in history has seen Unicef provide support for millions of affected children and their families. More than 4 million children are now in need of humanitarian aid as a result of the crisis: some 3.1 million children inside Syria and more than a million in refugee camps.” (Unicef, 2012)

WHAT YOUR MONEY WILL DO - HOW UNICEF HELP

“UNICEF’s work relies entirely on voluntary contributions. We receive no funding from the government budget. We use all contributions wisely and are one of the most efficient non-profit organisations in the world. We work to deliver long term, sustainable and cost-effective solutions.” (Unicef, 2012) Unicef are working hard to ensure that the millions of pounds they raise annually helps those in desperate need. LOUGHBOROUGH RAG & LABEL Mint ‘14 has worked in collaboration with the Loughborough Student Union; negotiating and extensively planning the logistics of the event as well as working towards making the best out of the venue features and layout. Loughborough Student RAG has worked in collaboration with our Fundraising Manager, James Lythgoe, alongside the fundraising team to ensure that Mint ‘14 achieves the highest possible revenue, thus creating a hopefully extremely substantial contribution to Unicef’s Syria Crisis Appeal. Providing us with highly valued information and guiding our event venture, RAG have greatly influenced and nurtured our idea through to production. A huge thanks to everyone at LSU RAG for your great support and aid. All donations will also count towards the 2014 RAG fundraising total. In 2012, LSU Rag raised an outstanding £1,080,724.46 for 146 different charities, making them the best student fundraising organisation in the country. Loughborough Student Union Label Magazine have also supported Mint ‘14. Their Style Team have joined with ours, combining knowledge and creative input to create an innovative fashion event. Label have also enabled the advertising of Mint ‘14, as well

as providing us with feature space within the magazine, to display promotional material such as recycled fashion blogs. Label was a huge contributor to the success of the donation collections, as well as assisting the Thrift Shop team to creatively select the garments for sale. Many thanks to all at Label that encouraging our venture and for providing us with the support we needed to make this event an all-rounded success. 41

Inside the envelope is a donation slip that allows you to sign up to the newsletter and acknowledge your donation; you do not have to complete this. Collection boxes will be located around the venue. Thank you again for your amazing support this evening. Already left? It’s not too late to donate - simply visit www.mint2014.tumblr.com for more details.
