welcome
stuart MCLaren head CoaCh Merry Christmas everyone! I trust that you had a great Christmas Day with your family and friends and that Santa Claus was good to you. As I’ve remarked previously, and as most of you are already aware, we are a little different from the other clubs we compete against in the Midland Football Alliance. One point of difference in particular strikes home at this time of year. With the majority of our players moving to Loughborough to be students of the University it means that out of term time (Friday the 13th of December was the last day for 2013) our players head home to catch up with family and friends. But with fixtures to fulfill over the Christmas period we rely heavily on a commitment from our players to return to the midlands for matches. As well as the considerable time commitment there is a financial burden with the club unfortunately unable to cover travel expenses. Now please don’t get me wrong, we are not looking for sympathy but when you watch the match today please recognize the commitment it has taken for each of our players to be here. Looking back on our season to date we have to say that
44
we are a little disappointed with how it has shaped up. We were unfortunately unable to make much progress in the FA Cup or Vase and our league form means we are in no position to threaten the leaders. When you add the fact that we lost our 2 year hold on the League Cup when we lost 1-0 to today’s visitors it has been far from our best period. The obvious reasons for this are we have not defended well as a team and at crucial moments in some matches we have failed to take our opportunities in front of goal. The less obvious reason is also one which I take great encouragement from. The nature of our club means that we will always have a turnover of players as they graduate following 3 or 4 seasons with us. We have had many influential players from last season’s treble winning squad move on which has created opportunities for others. Most of those others have been 1st year players and I am happy to go on record and say that I’m delighted with the performance and potential of this particular group of lads. We may not have always got the results we had hoped for, or indeed at times deserved, but the overall level of performance from the squad in general and the new players in particular promises much for the rest of the season and beyond. A huge part of our club focus is development and with the lessons learnt and the work we will put in on the training pitch I’m convinced that the current group will go on to achieve some great things in the remainder of the current season and next season as well.

QUORN FC The origins of Quorn Football Club can be traced back to 1924 when a group of local men from the Village Wesleyan Chapel formed a football team. In 1937 the Club, then known as Quorn Methodists gained access to the Leicestershire Senior League with a final name change to Quorn Football Club taking place in 1952. Throughout its history Quorn FC has consistently been a high flyer among Leicestershire’s senior teams, producing several players that have progressed to higher levels of excellence. Jackie Lee a Centre Forward went on to play for Leicester City and Derby County becoming an international, when he played for England v Ireland and scored. Richie Barker, who went on to play for Derby County and Notts County later managed Stoke City, Dion Dublin, who enjoyed a great playing career joining Manchester United, Aston Villa, Coventry, Leicester City, and Norwich as well as playing for England.
hospitality and due to the pitch’s natural drainage games were very seldom called off. Quorn moved to its present ground on Farley Way in 1994 with the establishment of a new modern Clubhouse large enough to cater for the demands of a progressive Football Club both on and off the field, a football pitch with a playing surface that is second to none, and a large Astroturf training area. Driven by the Club’s ambition to have a ground satisfying the facility criteria of Leagues at a higher level in the Football Pyramid, the following 14 years has seen remarkable progress, with the development of a 350 Seat Grandstand, built with the potential of increasing its future capacity to 500, large spectator car parking facilities, outside spectator toilets, and the establishment of a large grass training pitch to compliment the Astroturf.
In recent times Luke Varney, who was sold by the Club to Crewe Alexandra FC, and who developed into one of their most exciting players scoring 25 goals for them in the 2006/7 season, his quality was then recognised by Charlton Athletic who signed him for £2.5 Million in July 2007. Luke is currently playing for Leeds after spells at Derby County and a season long loan period for Blackpool in the Premiership. Over the years Quorn Football Club has played at several grounds in and around the village, but it was in 1960 that it relocated to Warwick Avenue, there it enjoyed the reputation of always providing good

WILLIAMS AND NTI: A STUDENT FEEL TO WORCESTER CITY
For Loughborough Students George Williams and Daniel Nti the journey to Step 2 of the non-league has been made in unison. After first combining on a football pitch at the tender age of seven, the pair were re-united at 18 in the first team squad for Loughborough University Football Club, but neither suspected their undergraduate careers would lead to them being headhunted by a non-league club with a proud tradition and passionate fan base. The pair moved to Worcester City in a joint deal over the summer and after being thrust into the first team limelight from day one, both are relishing the opportunity of regular football just two steps from the Skybet Football League. “At first you would think it would be pressurising because all eyes are on you, but once you get used to it, it fills you with more confidence,” Nti told The Youth Team Captain. “I felt like Loughborough was my comfort zone and I loved it there, but obviously if I want to step up in the game I need to find my feet in the higher leagues.
“But that’s a challenge I’m relishing, it’s not something I’m afraid of doing.” Nti set a new precedent for student football in the non-league pyramid last season by finishing as top scorer in the Midland Alliance League with 34 goals, building on an equally impressive season in 2012. And the forward has already grabbed five goals in a City side looking to recover from a disappointing start to the season. “Some of the players you play against are more experienced because they might have been at professional clubs in the football league and dropped down. “You can see their experience, but it’s nothing you should be scared of, it just allows you to appreciate the level you’re playing at. You gain a lot of respect for the standard of football.” George Williams has slotted straight into City’s regular right-back berth after a summer of eye-catching performances for Great Britain Students at the World Student Games in Kazan.

THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR
CHRIS BEREZAI
Is there a team more despised in English football than Milton Keynes Dons? The general opinion seems to be that the club has no right to a place in the Football League having stolen it from the original Wimbledon FC, whilst supporters up and down the country sneeringly refer to the Dons as “Franchise FC”. But have they got it all wrong? Is the MK Dons model actually the blueprint of running a successful club in this country? Let’s first strip away the dirt and look at how the club has thrived since its move. When the shift to Milton Keynes was first mooted the original Wimbledon were already in a mess and playing outside their home borough to satisfy Premier League criteria. With the club and Merton Council unable to reach any agreement over a new ground within the borough, there seemed to be no way home. Was the club already in its death throes? And if so, was the move to Milton Keynes the “regeneration” that
12
the club needed to survive? It could be argued that the move not only saved the club, but also galvanised those who had stayed loyal to the cause enough to realise what they were going to lose, and therefore created the impetus for the development of what we now know as AFC Wimbledon. The move was certainly controversial, but since settling into their new home the club have further annoyed their critics by appearing to have done everything right. They have become a model “club in the community”, and have developed a fan base by targeting the town’s youngsters. The new stadium was built with an unfinished top layer, to be completed when and if the club needed it, and on top of everything, a deal with amplifier company Marshall gave them the coolest shirt sponsor in the League - but the animosity towards them still remains.

spotlight popping the bubble
The FA have said that any similar proposals in the future will be rejected, but they also know that they haven’t a hope in hell of backing that up. Any prospective move will simply point to MK Dons, shout “precedent!”, take it to Court and watch the FA wring their hands in helpless despair. Part of the FA’s reasoning for allowing the move in the first place was that it was a unique case in British football – but that’s simply untrue. Meadowbank Thistle were bought and shifted lock stock and barrel 18 miles South West to Livingston in 1995 with barely a murmur of protest, whilst the case of Airdrieonians is even more spectacular. When the original club folded in 2002, a new club, Airdrie United, were founded in order to regain the original club’s place in the Scottish League. Turned down at the League AGM in favour of Gretna, Chairman Jim Ballantyne’s response was simply to approach the administrators in charge of homeless Clydebank FC, make them an offer to buy the club that they were duty-bound to accept, and then simply rename and relocate the club. It was as swift and brutal as that. Clydebank have reformed and play in front of a few hundred diehards in the Junior Leagues; their place in the Scottish League set up is still held by the (now renamed) Airdrie club. So, is it something that we should find more acceptable? Should we be a little more realistic about the economics of the day? There isn’t a season that goes by without clubs going to the wall for a variety of reasons, Hinckley United being the latest victims. But is it better to allow a sickly club to go and find somewhere the grass is literally greener rather than fold completely? Now I’m not suggesting that we go down the American route where the NFL teams chase the money and relocate at the drop of a hat. The history of the NFL is confusing enough because of it: the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals started life
13
as the Chicago Cardinals before relocating to St Louis; after the Cardinals left for Phoenix, the LA Rams moved in to become the St Louis Rams, this after having previously moved themselves from Cleveland, where the Rams were outstripped by their new Cleveland Browns neighbours, who themselves subsequently moved to Baltimore to replace the Colts who had gone to Indianapolis, or rather didn’t move because the Browns became the Ravens, who then gave up their history and titles to a re-animated Cleveland Browns franchise. Keeping up with all this? Good. What I am saying is that perhaps sometimes we need to see the bigger picture. Yes, by all means fight to keep your club, but if the alternative is oblivion....well, in the words of the great NorthEast philosopher Sting, if you love someone, set them free? There’s one final tale of relocation to talk about, and this one concerns a top English club who voluntarily relocated themselves away from their home to another area altogether for financial reasons, shifting their club 12 miles North, despite massive protest from their fans. Yes, 100 years ago in 1913, a troubled Division 2 side on the verge of financial ruin abandoned their home in South London, crossed the Thames, and moved to Highbury in North London. I wonder whatever became of Woolwich Arsenal?
