MORE THAN JUST A FRONTAL Looking beyond the facade is indeed a necessity, especially when it comes to architecture. The facade is a time capsule - one that can take on multiple forms. It is the reflection of the society at the time: its surrounding, the innovations relevant, and the people that occupies it.

SHOWCASES
Facades were and are still deployed for both functional and formal purposes. On the surface, they are merely objects of frontal and filtering values, either used to project an appearance or to fabricate a division between the interior and exterior.

INTERACTS
With recent and on-going innovations of architectural technology, the role of a facade is radically changing and are constantly being redefined - from static to increasingly kinetic designed solutions. Beyond the purposes of showcase, divide, and reflect, the new-found interactive quality is the latest addition to the list of functional purposes that a facade could serve.

Role of The Facade
The Balmain St. Project From the beginning, Lens01, with the introduction of the gatehouse and its wall, the idea/concept of translucent facade was sparked. Prior to the designing process, research and site studies aided in the in-depth understanding of the site, its surrounding, and pre-existing features that could be the potential design variables of inspirations. The perforated brick facade of the gatehouse is the direct translation from the conventional use of brick of the surrounding suburb of Cremorne. By doing so, the gatehouse is able to both radiate its own sense of uniqueness in contrast to its surrounding, while still retaining localized aspects through the use of the traditional palette.
In response to Cremorne's diversity and its constantly evolving landscape, the shelters that resides within the site are intended to reflect the revitalizing quality of the newly given title - The Silicone Valley. Hence, the use of a more 'modern' material, polycarbonate, is considered. Once used for appliances within various fields (medical,electrical,food,etc..,), Polycarbonate surfaces has been re-introduced into architecture as envelopes due to its light-weight, protection from UV radiations, heat resistance, translucent qualities, and more. The use of this material as the envelope/facade has provided an opportunity for it to filter light during the day, and flaunt light during the night. When juxtaposed, the semi-opaque nature of the material beautifully harmonizes to the use of the perforated-brick gatehouse, with the contrast in colour and the similarity in their ability to interact with light.
