Lustrum celebration Indonesian style NL Chamber members celebrated the fifth birthday on Wednesday 18 January in Skopje.

However, in order to do so, one needs to know what the guest may expect. In other words: we first need to get acquainted with eachother, before we can effectively introduce guests from our own business networks. Indonesian cuisine Therefore the group agreed to start with a pleasant networ­ king event, just for the current Dutch entrepreneurs in Mace­ donia. The initiators of both Natuurgevelsteen BV and ­micro investment fund Microdonia BV

offered to host such an event at the Natuurgevelsteen Inspiration Centre in Hollandsche­ veld, near Hoogeveen. The date is 15 June 2017, the day before the annual Open House of the company.

Early January a group of Dutch entrepreneurs with activities in Macedonia gathered in the Netherlands to exchange ideas on developing a B2B event on doing business in Macedonia. The initiator for this meeting was Jasper Mulders, owner of software developer Tricode BV. “Since 2010 we are running a development centre in Skopje. We are very satisfied with the results and that message we would like to share with the Dutch business community,” clarifies Mulders. “By sharing all our experiences on doing business in Macedonia with our combined busi-

Skopje Marathon on 7 May Several members made it a tradition to participate in the Skopje Marathon. NL Chamber is sharing the spirit of healthy competition! The annual Skopje Marathon takes place on 7 May 2017. Registration for the marathon, half marathon, relay marathon and 5 km is open at the site: www.skopskimaraton.com.mk. Groups can register as a (company) team for 5 km and half marathon.

Following the results of the membership survey, NL Chamber is preparing a third networking event for early summer. Whereas members clearly expressed the wish to have more networking events throughout the year, NL Chamber plans to use the annual celebration of “Hollandse Nieuwe” for a semi-public summer event.

“Hollandse Nieuwe” is the new herring of the season, caught with at least 16% of fat in the period of May to July and preserved in the traditional way by gibbing. Provisional date is 21 June.

Company Day at Ambassador’s Conference The annual gathering of all Dutch ambassadors includes a speeddating session for companies on 2 February in Rotterdam. End of January Dutch ambassadors, consuls-general and permanent representatives return to the Netherlands for their annual gathering. The last afternoon of the confe­ rence, Thursday 2 February, is dedicated to the Dutch business community with two rounds of speeddating. 15 minutes Dutch entrepreneurs can register here for up to four informative conversations of 15 minutes, which of course may lead to futher exchange of information as soon as the ambassadors have returned to their embassies. The event takes place at an UNESCO World Heritage location: the former factory for coffee, tea and tobacco Van Nelle Fabriek in Rotterdam on Thursday 02.02.2017, 15h15.

General Assembly scheduled for 22 March The provisional date for the annual statutory gathering of members is 22 March 2017. The General Assembly of members is the highest organ of NL Chamber. At this annual gathe­ ring the Board presents the results of the previous year as well as the budget and the

plans for the new year. With the membership survey that the Board conducted last autumn, there is fresh input on the expectations and desires of the members.

The current Board was elected in 2016 and there are no new elections scheduled.

Results Membership Survey The Board of NL Chamber is incorporating the results into the new annual programme. The new Board of NL Chamber, elected in Spring 2016, wanted to have a clearer view on the members, their motivations for membership, their satisfaction and expectations. See Graph 1. The two annual networking events - the birthday celebration in January and the breakfast in September - are valued “good” to “excellent” by 94%, whereas 31% of the respondents would like to see more such events. economic policies A vast majority of 75% would also like NL Chamber to form and express opinions on economic policies (Graph 2). Customs procedures were mentioned in particular by 15%.

For the occasion of the “Business Borrel” by the Nether­ lands Embassy in Tirana, Dutch supplier of horticultural consumables and agent for greenhouses and equipment GreNeth joined NL Chamber on a series of visits to Albanian companies in horticulture with strong Dutch ties. This included a Dutch investment in a raspberry nursery and a seedlings contract grower in Dutch greenhouses, both in Divjakë.

Four new members since summer Since the previous edition of this magazine four new members joined NL Chamber. In the second half of 2016 four companies joined NL Chamber: Pakomak and Atelier AVA as well as Dutch-owned Doj­ rana Fresh Produce and Fruit & Cake. joint venture in packaging waste Pakomak DOO is a unique joint-venture of 11 Macedo­ nian companies in food industry, established to manage the legal obligations concerning packaging waste. Companies that receive or use significant amounts of packaging materials have to organize selection and collection since disposal through the ordinary channels for domestic waste is prohi­ bited. As a private company registered for waste management with the Ministry of Environment, Pakomak organizes the collection and processing for recycling of packaging materials for over 800 member companies. For its founders and other producers that create retail packaging waste, Pakomak organizes public separated collection of paper, cans, plastic bottles and glass through so-

called “Eco Corners” at shopping areas and other busy places. Amongst the founders is NL Chamber patron member Pivara Skopje and members Tikves and Stobi Winery. The Law on management of packaging and packaging waste can be found here. event decoration

Dutch fruit grower After two years of experience in fruit trade in Macedonia, the people behind Dojrana Fresh Produce concluded that in order to improve reliability of supplies, quality and stan­ dards, they needed to take cultivation into their own hands. Dutchowned Dojrana Fresh Produce DOOEL started developing 250 ha. of agricultural land for the cultivation of cherries, apples and table grapes near Dojran. fruit and cakes

Another new member is a Dutch-owned company that is trading in fresh fruit, bakery ingredients and ready-made cakes. Fruit and Cakes DOOEL is supplying the largest retail chains in Macedonia with both imported and local fruits as well as imported bakery pro­ ducts, while exporting other fruits and cakes from Macedonia.

Tikves and Stobi wines in the Netherlands With another wine tasting event in Amsterdam and an incoming visit by Dutch journa­ lists, Macedonian wines were promoted. End of August a group of publi­ cists embarked for the Dutch Press Tour to wineries in Mace­ donia. Objective of the tour was to introduce these culinairy influencers to the flou­ rishing wine sector of Macedonia - and make them write, tweet, post and share about it.

Pivara Skopje and Pakomak clean Vardar river bank Supported by the Netherlands Embassy and organized by Pakomak, a large team of ­Pivara Skopje employees cleared the lawn along river Vardar from litter. Driven by joint ambitions on Corporate Social ­Responsibility (CSR), Pakomak and its foun­ der Pivara Skopje go beyond their legal obligations in packa­ ging waste management with regular environmental clea­ ning actions.

NL Chamber members support flood relief On Saturday 6 August afternoon rainshowers turned into a heavy thunderstorm that lasted almost the entire night with 93 liters of rain per square metre and over 800 lightning strikes in the area of Skopje. The enormous amounts of water led to floods in the area of the village of Stajkovci, just north-east of Skopje, which

caused 22 casual­ties. Pivara Skopje donated an amount of 100,000 EUR and bottled water to the Red Cross, whereas its employees were volunteering in the flood relief. Employees of Nido Global Textile and BDO donated various goods, whereas Boekestijn Transport Services arranged for the transport of donations

One of the most important events for the fashion industry, the fabrics and trimmings trade fair Première Vision is slowly extending the scope to garment sourcing with a Manu­ facturing section. New Deputy visiting NL Chamber members Andri van Mens visited companies in Stip and Kocani. In the first four months after his arrival, the new ­ Deputy Head of Mission at the Nether­ lands Embassy, Andri van Mens, visited ten Dutch companies in and around Skopje, Stip and Kocani. The visit to the Dutch laboratory for propagation of Pha­ laenopsis, Anthura in Kocani was scheduled at the moment that owner Iwan van der Knaap was also present. The Dutch

Webshop success

Out of the 9,469 webshops that started in 2015, 412 stopped the same year and 2,185 more stopped in 2016. In 65 cases the webshop stopped due to bankruptcy. Main challenges for webshops to be successful are maintai­ ning a wide assortment, deli­ very within 24 hours and freeof-charge return shipments.

Circular building

The Dutch regional energy network company Alliander had an existing complex of buildings for 600 employees redeveloped into one energy-positive contemporary workspace for 1.550 employees. Architect ­ homas Rau reused 86% of T the existing buildings, canopied by a wave roof with skylights, creating a large atrium. Waste wood was transformed into wall panels, concrete from demolished building parts was transformed into granulate for the atrium floor and old workwear was converted into isolation material. Measuring 382 by 124 metres, the lifting vessel Pioneering Spirit is the largest ever built and owned by Dutch Allseas. The vessel can lay pipes at a depth of up to 3.500 metres at a speed of 7 km a day and lift entire offshore platforms up to 48.000 ton. The first project was the removal of a 13.500 ton oil platform.
