2022 Qatar World Cup - Ongoing Arguments
Nayeon Chloe Kim
On November 21st, 2022, the Qatar World Cup is being held with the first match between Qatar and temperature only goes up from 20 degrees Celsius to about 25 degrees Celsius. However, these changes caused the players to suffer more due to their tight schedules. The majority of the players are who compete in the Champions League and Premier League. However, the World Cup made the Champions League and Premier League stop in the middle of their season. Not only the tight schedule but also injury is one of the important factors. While playing football, it is natural

for players to get injured. However, due to fixed and compact schedules, if the players have a severe injury, they will eventually lose the chance to attend the World Cup because of familiar with Qatar raised the red flag between 2012 and 2014 when the infrastructure construction for the 2022 World Cup started. They warned that the rights of hundreds of thousands of foreign workers hired on the World Cup sites will be violated if labour regulations and construction company practices were not changed. Just in 2021, one year before, 50 foreign labourers died and more than 500 others were seriously injured while another 37.600 suffered

mild to moderate injuries. However, now (in 2022) more than 6.500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar since it won the right to host the World Cup. The workers had to work from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm – 12 hours – every day. Due to the harsh working hours and the hot temperature, it was a severe condition for many workers to survive.

Sean Yunseong Kim
The world cup is starting soon… Many people would want to visit where the world cup takes place. This time, the place that will receive the honour of hosting the world cup is expansions and format modifications since that time. Over 200 teams from across the world participated in the two-year qualifying procedure that preceded the 32-team final event that is now being played.

Although it was rare for the sport to be played outside of Great Britain at the time, Scotland and England competed in the first recognized international football game in Glasgow in 1872. At the end of the nineteenth century, matches between English and Scottish clubs were regarded as the "football world championship," such as the match in 1895 against Sunderland A.F.C. as well as the Heart of Midlothian F.C., in which Sunderland triumphed.
independence in 1930. The national associations of the chosen countries were asked to submit a team, but because Uruguay was the competition's location, European teams had to travel a long way and at great expense across the Atlantic .

Football, the World Cup has evolved for a long time throughout different ages. In this article, you saw how the world cup was formed. It came from a really small organism to grow into the major international event that it is right now. How much do you think the world cup will grow?

Heung-Min Son’s First Appearance after Surgery
William Shinwoo Kim
Son appeared in public for the first time after
undergoing orbital fracture surgery. He looked bright, but still had swelling on his face. Son visited from you! Playing for your country at the World Cup is the dream of so many children growing up, just as it was one of mine too. I won’t miss this for the world. I can’t wait to represent our beautiful country, see you soon.” He has announced his intention to participate in the World Cup in Qatar. What people are most looking forward to is whether Son will participate in this year's Qatar World Cup. Paulo Bento, the coach of the Korean national team, announced the final squad

The Thrill of Football: NLCS and the World Cup
Andrew Junseo Chi
One of the most popular sports in NLCS is football and the biggest football tournament in the world is being held in Qatar right now. However, whereas everyone supports the NLCS team, not everyone supports the Qatar world cup. The fact that more than 6500 migrant workers have died throughout the hard work of building the stadiums and infrastructure has caused controversy around the world. Despite the very low wages of the workers in Qatar, the winner of the World Cup will be awarded 42 million dollars.
Many people around the world love watching the World Cup, especially when the results can be so surprising. Some of the teams that were evaluated as weaker teams have miraculously performed very well. Saudi Arabia allocated November 23rd as a national holiday after beating the mighty Argentines. Of course, there are many very famous footballers this 2022, like Messi and Ronaldo, who will probably be playing for their last World Cup. However, several rising stars are becoming more popular as well, such as Gue-sung Cho who has seen his Instagram following grow from 500,000 followers to reaching almost a whopping 3 million followers.
The day that I am writing this article is the day that determines whether Korea goes through to the round of 16. The pressure that our national football team will be feeling is

immense, much more pressure than our NLCS football squad will feel before their next match.
Our school squad generally plays for fun but taking pride in representing your country is of much greater importance. As the famous saying goes; The ball is round, the game lasts ninety minutes, and everything else is just a theory. So, let's support both individual football teams in unison.

Sanctioned Champions of the World Cu p
Bella Ahyoung Kim
The scent of triumph and defeat fills the stadium as well as the living rooms of families all over the world who’ve set aside personal matters for this presumably most awaited event of the year. Qatar, despite corruption allegations, has been given the right to host the 2022 World Cup and the international society has channelled its attention to this single nation that will be in charge of organising fruitful matches. With South Korea recently emerging victorious, the World Cup has also been the subject of conversation here in NLCS Jeju. Who will remain as the single victor is still a mystery, nevertheless the true champions have been identified throughout the game .
The hosting country of this year’s world cup, Qatar, is notorious for its hostility towards the LGBTQ+ community. Persecution of homosexuals or individuals with queer gender identities is prevalent in the nation and abuse has become evident from the 2022 World Cup: LGBTQ+ individuals will not be welcome in the World cup. It has recently been reported that the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals have been arbitrarily detained, meaning that they can be arrested without any legal basis for their lack of liberty. Despite Qatar presenting its governmental stance as nonhostile towards the LGBTQ+ community and publicly announcing that all fans are welcome “without discrimination”, whether this is legitimate seems obscure.
The lack of answers from the official Qatar government and the continued oppression of the LGBTQ+ community left individuals with queer gender identities vulnerable and exposed to threat. When it seemed as if the possibility of the LGBTQ+ community being guaranteed equal treatment in the World cup was slim, seven nations stood up to cease the injustice. The captains of the following European nations - England, Wales, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, and

the Netherlands - announced wearing “OneLove” armbands in support of the victimised LGBTQ+ community. The rainbow-coloured armbands are a signal support of diversity and inclusion which seems to be a desperate necessity in status quo Qatar. However, this benevolent gesture triggered a major backlash and severe consequences for the teams. Hours before matches began, FIFA made an unprecedented announcement that they will be issuing a yellow card to every player that is wearing the armband. Considering that two yellow cards in a game are an automatic exclusion from the match, the issuing of a yellow card is detrimental to the success of the teams in the World cup.
Breaches of kit regulation normally paying fines and for the teams who were expecting this form of sanction, a yellow card left them in confusion and disbelief. The teams had their duties to fulfil, duties as members of the national team and as football players who came to win. The prioritisation of these duties was inevitable therefore team captains had to lose their armbands and express support through a more subtle method.

True sportsmanship lies in respect, justice and morality. The demonstration of such humanitarian principles showed who the true champions were in this year’s world cup. Despite having to negotiate their moves due to inevitable reasons the seven nations are worthy of recognition and will remain as victors, victors in the hearts of many over the globe.

The Most Tragic Events in the History of Sports
YJ Yoo
Last month, on the 29th of October 2022, people (mostly around the age of 20) gathered in the alleyway across Itaewon Station for a Halloween party. As it was the first festival in a while with Covid restrictions lowered, approximately 100,000 people gathered around a small area of Seoul for joy. However, this happy occasion soon turned into an unforgettable disaster as visitors started to get crushed among others due to high pressure from all directions toward them. 157 lives were sacrificed with 197 others injured with damages ranging from a simple bruise to a heart attack. This incident was a very depressing event which also left lots of people suffering both physically and emotionally. Therefore today, I want to introduce some of the most tragic events in the history of sports and how they should never happen again, just as how this Itaewon case should never happen again.
1. Zambian National Football Team Plane Crash
On the 27th of April, 1993, an aircraft named DHC-5 Buffalo that carried most of the Zambian national football team crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Libreville, Gabon. Although the transport aircraft from the Zambian Air Force was specially arranged for the football team, a total of 30 people (25 passengers and 5 crew members) were all sacrificed in this incident. This news was especially devastating news for Zambia as the team was on its way to the 1994 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Senegal in Dakar. Not only that, it was later discovered that the main cause of this aftermath was due to the pilot’s fatigue and the faulty components of the aircraft. Before the flight had taken off, there were several defects in the engine such as disconnected cables and a trace of heating. However, these factors were neglected by the crew and the scheduled trip had been commenced, which was to stopover at three refuelling points in Brazzaville (Congo), Libreville (Gabon) and Abidjan (Ivory Coast). At the first

stop, some problems were noted in the engine but these were also not considered. As the flight took off at the second stop, the left engine started to catch fire which could cause failure in the normal operation of the plane. Then instead of turning off the burning left engine, the pilot accidentally shut off the right engine, leaving no power for use. This ultimately led to the crash into the Atlantic and the horrifying event that is still remembered as a tragedy. What not only the Zambian government/air force but the whole world should do is to check all aircraft to search for any faulty parts in the plane, then rather than taking the risk, take some time to find another suitable vehicle available that is safe and trustworthy.
2. The Munich Massacre
During the 1972 Summer Olympics, which was held in Munich, West Germany, an attack from the Palestinian terrorist group Black September (BSO) occurred on September 5th and 6th. This assault was carried out by 8 members of the BSO, resulting in 12 victims: 8 Israeli coaches, 5 Israeli athletes and 1 West German police officer, as well as 5 perpetrators from a total of 8 in the plot. When the attack started, the terrorists infiltrated the Olympic Village and killed 2 people from the Israeli Olympic team, taking 9 as hostages. The perpetrators asked for the release of 234 Palestinian prisoners that were held in Israeli jails as well as the imprisoned founders of the Red Army Faction, Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof. However, instead of negotiating, the West German police decided to ambush the terrorists which led to catching 5 members of the terrorist group but sacrificing all the hostages in addition to one of the West German police officers. The other 3 members were all captured and arrested but got released the next month in the hostage exchange. Ultimately not only were all the hostages killed but the BSO had not been suppressed which meant that the mission had failed. Because the execution of the rescue attempt and the overall handling of the situation was so poor, the West German government was highly criticised by many people around the world with heavy grief and sorrow. It may be a fact that

these types of attacks are not happening as often as in the past, but it is also a fact that they are continuously reoccurring and all global institutions as well as governments should make perfectly sure in any situation, that this does not happen again.
3. Bradford City Stadium Fire
Some people believe that this case is close to an exception from other cases which were all done or due to humans. However, undoubtedly, this case is one of the deadliest human-made disasters in the history of sports. On May the 11th in 1985 at the Valley Parade stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, a fire broke out that killed 56 spectators in total and injured at least 265. There was a match in the Football League Third Division, which was surprisingly the last game of the season, between Bradford City and Lincoln City. The atmosphere was very cheerful, positive and celebratory just until the fire had begun. A television commentator, John Helm, had noticed a small single blaze and figured it was a fire at around 3.4o p.m. Just after a few minutes, the fire had spread and become massive due to the weather with lots of wind that was especially strong on that particular day. People could not escape their seats because of the enormous flame that had engulfed the whole stand and even if they did, the turnstiles gates were locked after the match had begun so people could not flee, leading to countless lives being burnt. Then, why was the fire created in the first place? After investigation, it was found that one of the fans in the stand attempted to extinguish a lit cigarette when it slipped through floorboards and onto the rubbish that was accumulated for months. This had started the ignition and although the wind had taken part in spreading the flame, the assimilated litter under the stand was mainly the major cause of the fire becoming inevitably huge. Although this incident is regarded as due to a “natural cause”, the fact is that both the lit cigarette and the litter built up for several months were all because of humans. Hence quite different from other cases, people prevented this from happening again by

upgrading the standard of all stadiums in the UK with other facilities and pieces of equipment to control the disaster if ever it were to happen again in the future.
4. Estadio Nacional Disaster - The Lima Riot
Undoubtedly, this disaster is the worst incident that had happened in the history of association football and might be the same in the history of sports. A football match, between Peru against Argentina, was held on the 24th of May, 1964 at the Estadio Nacional in Lima. This game was important for Peru as they wanted to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics football tournament without any trouble. The score was 1-0 to Argentina with approximately 6 minutes left with the ball’s possession on Peru’s side. Just after a few seconds, Peru scored a goal which was disallowed by the Uruguayan referee. Because this goal could have equalised the score difference, Peruvian fans went furious that they even started to enter the pitch. It was good that the police were placed in the stadium, but their actions were not the right choice. They fired tear gas canisters around the stand to prevent more people from bombarding the field, but this led to further chaos and people running around to escape from the gas. What all people thought was that exiting the stadium was the only pathway to escape the whole disastrous situation. People all ran for the exits but the gates were closed, surprisingly, with corrugated steel shutters that pushed the front people back when they were pushed towards the front as well. This high pressure had been the cause of the massacre of 328 deaths and 500 injured, mostly from internal haemorrhaging or asphyxia. On the contrary, interestingly, people no one who stayed inside the stadium had gotten killed or injured. The reason was simple. The only possible dangers inside the stadium were the enraged fans and tear gas canisters. This case is another great example of a disorganised and uncontrolled incident that could have ended with fewer casualties with just the right response or the precaution that should have been taken. Because riot cases are quite

common in sports events, it is absolutely necessary to improve the secureness when these vibrant and sometimes heated matches take place.
Besides these tragedies, there have been countless more. Just on the 1st of October 2022, which was last month, there was a fatal human crush that produced 135 casualties with 583 others left injured. As I have continuously mentioned, our mission as sports fans and their mission as sports institutions or governments are the same which is to prevent this from happening again. Our job is to follow the correct instructions and remain calm as sports fans when things get tough for our team. Their job is to install new advancements to the facilities of the stadium, place sensible police to prevent any conflict within the safety measures and make sure that all the players, as well as staffs, are safe during the matches. If we were to all work together as a sports community, we can stop these disasters with great casualties from happening again. Help us make a society where people around the world can enjoy sports both safely and freely.

The Karate Master: Rafael Ağayev
Jason Jiho Jeon
How he started
Like his father Lotfi Zadeh, he started playing football at the age of 7. At the same time, he started practicing karate at the school of his first coach, Rafael Mammadov. His first coach was able to instill in him a great love for karate and taught him the first habits and skills. By participating in the first national competitions, he attracted attention and began to train in "Budokan", one of the most famous sports clubs of the republic, under the leadership of Fuzuli Musayev.
How he starts to be successful
At the first championship of the Republic, Aghayev won an overwhelming victory over all his rivals and was noted by the President of the National Karate Federation, Yashar Bashirov, who saw great potential in him and his unusual fighting tactics. Aghayev was very diligent and had the will to win, but he lacked international experience. He first took part in the National Team in

1997, at the open World Cup in Miskolc, Hungary. His first performances were not successful at the international level competition, but the next year he won the Open Championship of England and performed very well from then on.
How he succeeds
At his first World Championship among Cadets and Juniors, which was held in 2001 in Athens, he won 3rd place in the team event, and the following year became the European Champion. Thus, up to this day, he holds the lead in his weight class. Despite his young age, he managed to achieve all of the highest sporting victories in karate; he is a multiple European Champions and repeated as World Champion. At one World Championship, he was able to win two gold medals. This happened in 2008 at the 18th World Championship in Tokyo, when he won in the 70 kg weight category and the open category. The President of the World Karate Federation, Antonio Espinosa called him the "Diamond of the Karate World."

The Challenges of Swimmers
Sharon Seongwon Yoon
Unlike any other sports that take place on land, swimming takes place underwater, which makes it one of the most risk-taking and tough sports. Swimming focuses mainly on holding one’s breath underwater, which leads the competitors to undergo harsh training for years. Even young swimmers are trained to hold their breath for over 2 minutes; Michael Phelps, one of the most world-breaking swimmers, held his breath for 22 minutes and 22 seconds underwater. Even though in most competitions, swimmers hold their breath for not more than 20 seconds, it is a crucial ability that a swimmer must have.
However, these essential abilities of swimmers could lead to severe outcomes, which all have to overcome. Some examples include eye pain, ear pain, diarrhoea…etc. Even though swimming does not involve any physical wrestling between swimmers (since it is an individual race), some tactics they use could lead to physical damage as well. For example, the ‘tumbling
NLCS JEJU SPORTS COUNCIL January 7, 2023
22
turn,’ which is used when the swimmer pushes off the wall, could be harmful to inexperienced swimmers. It is very challenging to estimate where the swimmer should make their turn if it is their first time. The only thing that is needed in this process is practice and adaptations. If they are used to their physical abilities and if they recognize their physical characteristics, it is easy to estimate where they need to complete the tumble turn.
Another skill that a swimmer has to develop is a dive, also known as a start. It is when the swimmer goes on top of the diving stand and gets ready to dive as far as possible. In this process, some naive swimmers could dive straight toward the floor instead of going forwards. If the pool they are training in has a low depth, it is dangerous, since swimmers could damage their neck muscles or their heads.

Benefits of Sporting: Why you should aim to work out at least twice a week
JY Lee
There are two types of people: those who generally enjoy any type of physical movement and those who despise the thought of even getting out of bed. Everybody knows that working out and making some sweat is good, but how is it good? In this article, we hope to introduce you to the secrets behind working out and how it benefits you.
There are three main types of physical activities: aerobic, muscle strengthening, and bone strengthening. Different types of activities improve different aspects of your body! Therefore, as well as finding out about the benefits of physical activity, we should understand the different types of activities.
NLCS JEJU SPORTS COUNCIL January 7, 2023
24
Aerobic activities are activities that increase the heart rate and the body's use of oxygen. They include swimming, cycling, walking, rowing and so much more. Aerobic exercise benefits you in various ways including improving cardiovascular conditioning, decreasing the risk of heart disease, lowering blood pressure, and increasing HDL or "good" cholesterol.
Muscle strengthening activities are physical activities which increase skeletal muscle strength, power, endurance and mass. Some examples are lifting weights, climbing stairs, cycling, dancing, and doing push-ups, sit-ups and squats. They benefit you as they help maintain muscle tissue, increase strength, improve bone health, control body fat, and decrease the risk of injury
Finally, bone-strengthening activities are activities that produce a force on the bones that promotes bone growth and strength. Examples of these activities are running, jumping rope, basketball, and tennis. These activities help you build strong bones that protect your body against injury and improve balance and coordination.
Building your health is a very important task and it is one that cannot be procrastinated. You need to begin to strengthen your body so that you will be able to maintain a healthy body even when you grow older. All the activities above are easily accessible within our school community as CCA or Bryant activities. To improve your health and have some fun, why don’t you work out or try a new sport starting today?
