War VS Sports, Which Will Win YJ Yo

Nowadays, the majority of people know about the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Causing at least 13,000 casualties, this war is still ongoing with conflict and making both Russia and Ukraine suffer severe damages. At this point, you will wonder, “What does this war have to do with sports?”. However, this war especially made a large impact on the world of sports. In today’s newsletter, I want to talk about the 3 main factors that gave different impacts on the sportsdom.

First and foremost, the sports world fell into shock and grief when it received the news that a few sports athletes were killed in war instead of getting all the fame from their careers.

One example of these stars is Vitalii Sapylo and Dmytro Martynenko. They both were not very famous in the world of sports but were considered as great players in their team. According to FIFPRO, they were the very first footballers to be sacrificed in the war. Another example is Yevhen Malyshev, who was a biathlete that played in the Ukraine Junior National Team. Aged only 19, he was killed in a conflict with Ukrainian and Russian soldiers. Like these faithful athletes, the death of sports stars filled the world with grief and became the motivation for other surviving players to send the message of stopping the war towards the public.

Another factor that impacted the sports world was the cancellation of various sportrelated events, which turned huge amounts of practice into nothing for some athletes and disappointed the crowd that waited for the great show. Robert Lewandowski, who was judged as the best football player of 2021, simply stated on his Twitter that "I can't imagine playing against the Russian national team in a situation where armed attacks continue in Ukraine”. not yet cancelled, but if the pressure is continuously given, it is likely for this round to be held later, or even never. Additionally, this was not the only case. According to UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), the Champions League final, which is one of the most famous and well-known tournaments, was originally going to be hosted in Russia but the location changed to France due to the currently active war between Ukraine and Russia. Even though sometimes players themselves reject playing a match or having a competition, it is a disadvantage for them as well because their hard preparations for the tournament could turn into dust. However, ignoring this fact, players and committees are applying more pressure to the host organisation.

Although the death of athletes and cancellation of sports events made the sports world fall into shock and full of disappointment, the most significant fact is that war itself caused emotional damage to the majority of athletes both who were Ukrainian and who were not.

Dayana Yastremska, a Ukrainian tennis player, after her close victory of 2 to1, said that “This victory is nothing compared to what happened in my country”. Another Ukrainian tennis player, Elina Svitolina, who won 2 to 0 against a Russian player, could not smile even though she gained the victory.Yet, this grief does not apply solely to Ukrainian players. In the NBA, players from Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets put their arms around each other in support of two players in the league. Whether the players were Ukrainian or not, they supported each other and emphasised grief for the country.

Unavoidably, it is a fact that the sporting world was full of grief, rage, and disappointment.

Despite this, athletes did not give up and kept working hard to stay focused and finally gain great results for their audience. In the short term, it seems like the war won the battle against sports, but in the long run, sports will undoubtedly win the war against war.
