Do you love the sports you play? Why not play it in university? (It may boost your chances of getting into your dream university!) Nick (Sung Hyun) Oh
In the very first sports council newsletter where I introduced myself, I said that “I aim to play NCAA Division 3 Basketball”. Today I want to talk about what I meant by NCAA D3 and how it can help with your university applications. The NCAA, an acronym for National Collegiate Athletic Association, is an organization that regulates the athletic programs of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. As of Oct 2020, 1098 colleges and universities are members of the NCAA. The NCAA adopts a threedivision system; NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III. Schools that are part of D1 and D2 can offer scholarships to their athletes whereas D3 schools are forbidden from offering any athletic scholarships. So, for what reasons do I want to become a D3 student-athlete? First of all, unlike becoming a D1 or a D2 athlete, becoming a D3 student-athlete will allow me to experience an all-around college life where I will be able to take on all the necessary academics to earn an undergraduate degree while being able to play the sport I love at a competitive level. Secondly, if you are going to be a part of the D3 sports team from the university you are applying for, it boosts your chance of being admitted.

There are many Division III universities that you may be interested in like MIT, Caltech, NYU, Johns Hopkins, and Emory. Indeed, I will be applying to these universities and I believe three students from my year including myself, will be the first ones in NLCS history to apply to become an NCAA D3 student-athlete. I am aware that my university life may become crazy busy if I do become a D3 athlete, but I don’t want to miss the incredible opportunity of being able to play basketball in university while still receiving all the education - not even the slightest bit. I will be discussing in future articles about how to become an NCAA D3 student-athlete. For now, study hard and play (sports) hard!
