New Sports Facilities Sumatra (Marty) Dillon
Over the summer break, the sports department has been working hard to provide us with new and improved faculties. We spoke to Mr Roberts, the new Director of Sport, to learn about all the new developments and future projects to happen in the future. Dancers might notice the new polished floors in the dance and gymnastics studios. The floors were sanded down and polished to be lighter and better for such activity. The multi gym had a similar treatment, as the floor was sanded and cleaned, and the equipment was removed, serviced, and reinstalled in the gym to be used by our sporting community. In the sports hall, the floor has been sanded and the court lines have been repainted. The astro fence has been replaced with an open fence that now allows wind to blow through, which will make it stronger in defense against typhoons and fierce Jeju wind. Over the spring break, the sports department plans on adding blue padding, branded with NLCS Jeju, around the fencing. The community astro, near the junior school, has also received a new fence around tennis 2

courts and football goals. The concrete posts have been reinforced in order to be stronger against the threat of typhoons. You may have noticed the lighter flooring of Squash Court 1, which has been sanded down and the floor relaid. The sports department hopes to do the same for Squash Courts 2 and 3. Due to the increase in popularity of table tennis, the sports department are planning on having a curtain on the balcony, along where the staircase is, to prevent the loss of table tennis balls during PE classes, CCAs, and Bryants. Over Chuseok break, the swimming pool was closed. During this time, the pool was backwashed: emptied of all water in order to have its floors and tiles cleaned, and then was replaced with fresh clean water. The pool is now a much clearer, blue colour, and open again to all eager swimmers. Students may have also noticed the four new basketball hoops: two available for senior school, and two available for junior school. These new mobile posts have created more entertainment and sporting opportunities for our whole school community. This may be unknown to our students, but the sports department is also proud of the new shelving by the astro store. While a mainly invisible update, it is always important to keep organization updated and neat, and improve all sports facilities. Over Christmas break, the sports center is to be repainted entirely. Notice boards and old photos will be taken down to keep the sports center updated and freshened. At the front entrance of the sports center, the department hopes to put up names and titles for all the sports staff, to let students become familiar with the entire sports department. The photos are going to be replaced with newer photos, taken by the sports council and submitted by teachers and students alike. We are proud to announce the new diversity of sporting photos that will be put up in the sports center, representative of the diversity of sports and athletes in our school. Future Long Term Projects 1.
The sports department hopes to turn the current empty GoChat space into a developed sports facility more useful to the students.
2.
They also plan on updating the Halla and Junior courts, to freshen them up and keep them updated.
3.
The grass area in front of Geomun is currently bare, but the sports department hopes to make it a sporting facility that can be used for junior school Bryants. 3

Possibly the fastest way to get yourself into a team - Become a valuable member. Nick (Syung Hyun) Oh Everyone dreams of being the all-around superstar for their team; the star that can do it all. Unfortunately, this requires a lot of time, effort--and probably a lot of luck as well. But what if you have a sports trial next week? Or what if you have to prove to the coach that you are valuable enough for the team within a short span of time so that you are not dismissed? If this is the case, I advise you to find a role in the team that you can specialize in. Because, at the end of the day, the players who can consistently help their team win games are the ones who will remain. So, what roles can you play in the team of your discipline to prove yourself? For basketball, there are so many ways other than scoring to help your team win. If you become really good at things like rebounding, screening, and defending pick and rolls, you can have a profound impact on your team. Furthermore, these are areas that you can work on to make yourself stand out from others (at high school level) in a relatively short period of time. I guarantee that if you are a basketball player and you become a good rebounder from learning how to box-out and being aggressive (which can be learnt more quickly than other skills), you will be able to play on the team even if you fall behind in all the other areas.

Indeed, if you are urgent to be able to play a vital part on the team, work on areas that are very important but are less emphasised or recognised by others. Nick Collison, a former professional basketball player for the OKC Thunder - “Find your way of playing the game”.
