Pyoseon News Unity, Achievement, Commitment.
Message from Mrs. Spivey As we come to the end of a long and busy term, I wanted to reflect on some of the amazing activities and challenges that our Pyoseon students have participated in. I continue to find it incredible that they have the energy and time for all these activities after the busy schedule of boarding life here at NLCS. Some of the highlights are featured in this newsletter in articles written by our busiest students. For that, I am grateful. This term we have tried to embrace some key values which have been decided upon by the students themselves. Our personal values are “kindness, open-mindedness and empathy”. I think that some of the achievements of our Pyoseon students thoroughly reflect these values and none more so that our two prize-winners at the boarding presentation evening. Congratulations Yeonjae for winning the “Value-dictorian” Award and Apple who won the Pyoseon Spirit Award, nominated by the staff. I do hope that all the girls find time to rest and recharge their batteries over the break and enjoy spending time with their other families, away from the Pyoseon family! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! Emily.

Message from Apple and Elina In November Elina and I went to Yale University for a debate/writing competition. It was the tournament of champions, and we went there because we won the first two tournaments which were held in Seoul Where we became Korean Champions. It was such an honour to be in the imposing campus of Yale, and make so many friends from all over the world. We were competing against 600 teams form all over the world. Our final piece debate was titled “this house believes that when fiction writers fill a gap in history it brings more good” and we had to speak against the motion. We were debating against a strong team from Indonesia and we won! We also came second in the team writing event where we each had to choose our own title from a list of options and each write 850 words in 1 hour. We were nervous when we first started but we would recommend this experience to anyone because it definitely opened our minds to other cultures and countries. We made so many memories that will last a lifetime and learned so much about history, debating and different styles of writing. Seeing Yale in real life has renewed my desire to apply to this University in the future.
Message from Chloe Park Hello, this is Chloe Park in Y10. In this section of the Newsletter, I'd like to shed some light on the area of extra-curricular activities. These pursuits, often overlooked, offer more than just a break from academics. They provide a chance to explore new angles, confront challenges head-on, and most importantly, pursue personal interests. One such experience that piqued my interest was a dive into the site of cultured meat production. This began with an opportunity to peek behind the curtain of a cultured meat lab, in the point of growing awareness of the environmental concerns tied to conventional meat production. My subsequent research led to an analytical paper that dissected the nutritional comparison of red meat and cultured meat, positive environmental impact that cultured meat can induce, and future consumer adoption. Being in that lab, surrounded by the tangible aspects of what I had read about, was nothing short of fascinating. It was a firsthand look into a scientific process that bridged theory and practice, leaving me with a sense of awe and much rigour towards this invention. I also took part in the John Locke essay competition. My submission focused on the relationship between monetary values and happiness, according to the Hedonic Adaptation Treadmill Theory. It was a deep dive into economic principles and human psychology, weaving together strands of knowledge to present a coherent argument. In summary, these extracurricular pursuits transcend the mere fulfilment of requirements. They represent invaluable opportunities to explore, acquire knowledge, and apply skills in ways that extend beyond the confines of the standard curriculum.
Message from Reina and Soyeon On November 25th, 2023, we actively participated in the VEX Robotics Competition held at St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju. Our task involved independently designing and constructing a robot to compete against various teams in the game named "Over Under." The objective was to score the maximum number of balls into the opposing team's goal. Despite facing numerous challenges during the lengthy process of building our robot, we successfully addressed each issue, resulting in the creation of an impressive robot that excelled in competition. Our team encountered various obstacles throughout the construction phase, but our determination and problem-solving skills allowed us to overcome these hurdles. Remarkably, our efforts paid off, and our robot performed exceptionally well, securing a commendable 3rd place overall in the qualification rounds. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering it was our inaugural participation in such a competition. The entire experience provided us with valuable insights and positive moments. We look forward to the opportunity to participate again next year, aiming for even greater accomplishments.
Message from Amber Activities are a big thing in Pyoseon. We do weekly activities every Saturday night, sometimes a competition, sometimes just a whole house activity for people to enjoy. Only recently, Pyoseon had a in-house competition/event when we decorated our door and made gingerbread houses within our year groups. Aside from that, there are Sunday activities where you can do sports; and breakouts where you can use the school facilities to either catch up on your classwork or just practice ( eg) art, music lesson, dance, sports, etc). We are also allowed to have free time, where we are can use the boarding house facilities such as the kitchen to do baking and/or cooking, which is a popular free time activity for multiple year groups. We also have the support of teachers and older students in Academic Enhancement sessions, where boarders are supported in various subjects or test practice on 1-to-1 or smaller group sessions. This is for all boarding students but Pyoseon has created one in-house too.
Message from Minchae From November 29th until December 2nd, we performed the musical ‘Cats’ in the PAC. Cats was one of my best experience in NLCS Jeju. It was a great opportunity for me to meet more dancers and perform as one group. We had a lot of pressure to perform a great musical but with Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Smith’s help, cats was able to be finished perfectly. During the practices we faced a lot of difficulties but as a one group, we went through all the problems together. Cats was a chance to know more dancers in school which created bond between us by using our bodies.
