Iho News 22 September 2023

Message from the BM Aewol - 15 August 2023

Mrs Washington It is always an exciting and busy time of the year introducing our new students in to the Iho way of life. What has been most pleasing to witness is the effort our existing students have gone to, to make our new students feel welcome. Homesickness is a normal part of leaving home at a young age, and it can take a while to settle. Below is a comment from one or our leaders who went through homesickness when she first arrived 2 years ago, who is now absolutely thriving in all areas of school. Iʼm also really proud of our Iho parents who support their children from afar which must be difficult. We often hear what parents say through their daughters, and this year in particular, we have heard many optimistic and hopeful comments from parents that their daughter will do well. We have to say this makes a significant difference to your child being successful. Congratulations to Grace and her media team for putting this newsletter together. Iho proud!

Induction Day Aewol - 15 August 2023

Induction Day

Welcome

Wednesday 23rd August was induction day. Staff of IHO house and year 11 student leaders greeted new students and held a question session on boarding. The student council then took the new students on a school tour, showing all the different facilities the school has to offer. Most of them had their first lunch with old boarders.

The IHO staff tried their best to help new boarders overcome homesickness and adapt well in the new community by offering endless support. All the boarders returned to boarding homes and began getting ready for the new academic year. We played name games, introduced ourselves and talked about our summer. We were excited to meet our new room mates.

Activities Iho - September 2023

Water Gun fight

Ms Zhangʼs Dumpling Spectacular

The girls had an absolute blast engaging in a spirited water gun fight! It was a fantastic outdoor activity that's not only fun but also great for refreshing their brains. We're lucky to have a spacious area in front of our dormitory that is covered in lush green grass, giving the girls the perfect spot to enjoy this kind of activity.

On 3rd September, some of the Iho girls made dumplings with Ms Zhang. Ms Zhang and the students made approximately 500 dumplings. After making the dumplings, they enjoyed eating them as well as sharing them with the other Iho girls. They had a really fun time making the dumplings and enjoyed the learning process! Thank you Ms Zhang for all of the effort.

Spraying water on each other on a hot summer day was a cool way to beat the heat, and it brought everyone closer together.

Iho Beach Trip Iho - September 2023

Sunday 10th September On 10th September, all of Iho boarding house went on our annual trip to Iho beach. Completing our tradition of writing a goal on a leaf, we threw them in the air and hoped for the best luck with the new academic term. We had an amazing time looking at the sunset and having fun on the beach with delicious snacks. We explored the quirky cafes along the waterfront this year and played volleyball and paddled in the water. Always a special time at Iho beach.

Girls Programme “Girls on Fire” is our moto this year with a matching Aleisha Keys song. Link here if you care for a listen! The song is about being grounded, passionate, and finding your inner spark. We want our girls to find what it is that lights them up, ignites their world and how they can develop to be their best. Rather than going through the motions of their day, we want to know who they really are, what strengths they have and how they are going to take this through to the world, now and when they are ready to make a difference. More to come…..!

Year 11 Leaders They have been ʻon dutyʼ supervising prep and helping with the juniors hand in their electronics. They have exciting plans for after the term break so we look forward to seeing these come to fruition.

Non electronic time This year we introduced a non-electronic time during Sunday afternoon. They are receiving their electronics earlier in the morning if they wish to study, however when we asked them if they were more productive with their time last Sunday, 70% said yes. Our goal is to encourage students to work smarter with their time. There is little point sitting at a desk and not being efficient in the output of their study. They will study better and have more focus and retain more, if we have a balanced lifestyle with physical activity, being creative, being outside in nature and many other options. We look forward to seeing the impact on the girls over the year.

What to bring back We have already noticed a drop in humidity so when the girls return they will need their winter uniform. They may like to think of bringing a winter blanket, and of course warmer clothes. With a lot of sickness around at the moment, and more to come over the winter months, please send some masks back with your daughter.

Until next time… 23 September 2023
