A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju We are all delighted by the beautiful Spring weather and it is wonderful to see students socialising and playing sports outside during their breaks. We have also seen groups actively engaged in coursework field days and the service activities outdoors once more, as well as more sport fixtures in place. We also have a number of International Award ( Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme) expeditions taking place for both bronze and silver awards. Academically this term is important for all our students and particularly those engaged in their IGCSE and IB Diploma examinations which continue until the last week of term. Students will also have transition days to look forward to and to participate in as they continue their NLCS journey. With the further opening up and lessening of COVID-19 restrictions we are continuing to offer more opportunities for parents to come into school and celebrate with us or be informed about upcoming changes in the School. We also are happy to welcome parents to find out more about boarding at NLCS Jeju rather than being a day student so that they can learn of the advantages this can bring. By arrangement we can give tours of boarding homes and opportunities for parents of existing or potential new boarders to understand the boarding experience at NLCS Jeju. Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

UKRAINIAN SONG IN ASSEMBLY We recently welcomed two talented musicians from Ukraine, currently living in Jeju, to perform at our Whole School Assembly. Husband and wife, Mr. Oleg and Ms. Anna Tsiatko performed ‘Melody’ by Myroslav Skoryk. An incredibly moving recital which allowed us all time to reflect on the devastating times being experienced in Ukraine. Also, inspired by violinists who are performing around the world for Ukraine, Jinyeong Oh, Jamie Koh, Sola Yoon, Hyeon Moon and Ms. Boyun Kim gave a beautiful and heartfelt performance of a Ukrainian Folk Song, ‘Verbovaya Doschechka’, arranged by Illia Bondarenko. Thank you to Oleg and Anna who took the time to visit our School, Ms. Katrina DanielsSamasa for arranging the visit and to Ms. Ruth Baker for organising our School musicians.

YOUNG REPORTERS FORTHE ENVIRONMENT COMPETITION YEAR 9 ECHO CHO YRE is an award winning programme coordinated by Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The programme empowers young people to take an educated stand on environmental issues they feel strongly about and gives them a platform to articulate these issues through the media of writing, photography or video. Echo Cho entered the competition as Korea’s representative and won the Best Award. You can watch her video HERE

An inspiring message from Echo: “Save the World : Start Right Now! Climate change is hugely impacting our entire planet. It reduces the quality of life, and poses a great threat to not only today’s humanity, but also future humankind. If no actions or efforts are taken, Earth would be led straight away to extinction. Therefore, it is truly important to start something we can do right now. Through this video, I wanted to send the message that individuals should practice the 5Rs, and countries should slow down the speed of climate change through carbon neutrality and renewable energy. What I want is not something grandiose. Right now, even small things must be practised for tomorrow to be continued”.

BEEKEEPING Resident bee enthusiast and now regular guest writer for the NLCS Jeju Newsletter, Chandler Ahn, shares her latest bee related article focussing on Colony Collapse Disorder. Look out for more updates from Chandler in future newsletters and on our social media.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Unanswered Questions, South Korea’s most popular true crime TV show, called it the ‘serial bee-napper’; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prefers the term ‘phenomenon’. CCD is a phenomenon in which the majority of worker bees in a colony disappear. 7.8 billion bees were reported missing in South Korea during this year’s spring thaw. In classic CCD fashion, no bodies were ever found; all that was left behind was the husk of the hives, along with an eerie silence where the bees’ buzzing used to be. It isn’t simply that the bees are disappearing. CCD is symptomatic of a score of underlying problems—pesticides and other toxins, global warming, loss of bees’ feeding grounds— which together spell out disaster for the planet’s future. Bees are responsible for onethirds of the world’s food supply, and also for the reproduction of 85% of all pollinating plants. Einstein’s grim prediction—that if the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, humans would only have four years left to live—seems less like conjecture with each passing day. Bees are disappearing, and the best way to save them is to understand them. NLCS Jeju’s beehives are more than just buffers for the bee-napped Apis mellifera—they are opportunities for our students to grow to love, not shy away from, a bee’s buzz. ‘He is not worthy of the honey-comb,’ says Shakespeare, ‘that shuns the hives because the bees have stings’; so let’s first learn to appreciate the majesty of the bees before we rush to reap the fruits of their summer-long labours.

SWIMMING SUCCESS Year 8 Siwoo (Jason) Jeong has been selected to represent Jeju Freestyle Swimming in a national athletic competition on May 28. Siwoo has been swimming for 6 years. Over the years he has trained hard, entered many competitions and has even won gold and silver medals for 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. Siwoo’s favourite stroke is Freestyle ‘I want to feel the highest speed in water’, his advice to others ‘never give up, even if you are slower than others, always do your best and only be concerned with competing with yourself’ Good luck to Siwoo in his upcoming competition.

YEAR 7 STEM PROJECTS

Emma Cho, Claire Kim and Chloe Lee Their experiment into whether or not different flavoured cough drops had different melting points took longer than anticipated - they all agreed that experiments outside the classroom were very different to expected and that the teacher’s advice was correct and the original method was actually the best method!

David Jo, David Kim and Andy Park The team experimented with varying the height of Davinci’s Self Supporting Bridge making the bridge was more difficult than expected, from selecting the most suitable wood for the build and determining the location of force - there were lots of variables to consider.

Sunu Kim, Daniel Joon Lee, Dokyoung Kwon and Hyunjin Choi When attempting to find the best light to grow plants in, the group learnt quickly that relying on the first and only draft is not the correct approach. Agreeing that you need to revisit the plans, design, identify flaws and redesign to reach a conclusion. Regular and detailed observations were also key!

Daniel Kim, Calvin Kim and Louie Kim During their project to explain further the differences between acids and bases the trio learnt more than just science. Working together as a team they agreed it was important to listen to each other’s opinions, be respectful, consider and combine each other’s ideas (even if you don’t agree) but above all else they had to compromise in order to succeed. A valuable lesson to be used in all aspects of life!

Jennifer Lee, Alice Ko and Phillie Kim It’s OK to change your plans! This was the key lesson that the group took away from their project. Despite detailed planning there were three failed attempts to conduct the experiment using mungbeans. Seeking advice from teacher Ms Coughlan, the girls changed to wheat seed and were able to move their experiment forward. They all agreed that you should follow science and not expect it to follow you!

Jeanie Brown, Emily Hwang, Claire Kim and Jianna Lee The group looked at whether or not it was possible to assume someone’s name by looking at their face. The experiment produced data that was both numerical and subjective, making them aware of the difficulties of working with non-numerical data. The team also pondered as to whether this experiment was hindered as due to COVID-19 and prolonged mask wearing people may be less familiar with seeing full faces regularly.

LIBRARY NEWS World Book Day - 23 April Since 1995 the annual World Book Day encourages us all to read and discover authors who contributed to the social and cultural progress of humanity. In order to promote Sora (a student reading app), our Senior School Library prepared a Sora booth and gave away Sora branded cookies and bookmarks!

Poetry Month The Academy of American Poets recognises April as Poetry Month. Our students were invited to the Senior School Library to view a “Novels in Prose” display and were encouraged to create short poems using words cut from old magazines with a display “Poems on the Go”. Ms. Hager Braham, Head Librarian, said “Students’ excitement to enjoy eating a cookie, creating poems or simply browsing this selection of novels in verse was a delight and evidence of how our students are engrossed by English words”

ARTS FESTIVAL LOGO COMPETITION Congratulations to Jiwoo Shin for this year’s winning design - based on the ‘changing reality’ of a star when it explodes and creates a Nebula of gases, Jiwoo has created this stunning visual interpretation of the theme.

WENDY LEE COMMITTEE FOR YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN JEJU Congratulations to Hayoung (Wendy) Lee who has been appointed, by Jeju Provincial Government, as member of the Committee for Youth Participation - Wendy was also elected as the Vice Chairperson. The Committee gathers the opinions of teenagers and encourages their participation in the process of formulating and implementing youthrelated policies.

SCIENCE ACADEMIC TUTORING In the final process of finishing their STEM projects, the girls enjoyed putting into action the skills they have learnt with regard to variables competing to make the highest flying rocket. Team South Korea - Izzy Soyeon Shin and Jaye Choi did ‘smashed it’. Ms. Coughlan was impressed with Layla Jeon and Josephine Choi who refused to be beaten and learnt from their failed attempts to succeed in the final round! The boys showed off their understanding of the periodic table, even going so far as to challenge each other in finding specific elements and writing formulas. Ms. Coughlan recommends books such as “Periodic tales” by Hugh Aldersey-Williams or “The Disappearing Spoon” by Sam Kean, if you want to explore the wonderful world of chemistry. Next time, we will be taking on the challenge to test Giant bubble recipes and wands.

YEAR 8 FIELD TRIP Our students studied energy sources on Jeju at the power plant near Hwasun Beach and the wind farm at Sangchang. Taking wind readings at different sites around Songaskan they’ll complete an investigation into the best location for a wind farm to meet the energy needs of Jeju.

LYRIC WRITING COMPETITION Students were given the opportunity to create lyrics for the piece that the school has commissioned alumnus Steven Seo, a Sony artist, to compose for Arts Festival 2022. This is the first time that the school has commissioned a piece and we are thrilled that it is being composed by an alumni, featuring lyrics created by a current NLCS Jeju student. Congratulations to Hannah Kim, whose lyrics were selected.

MUN NEWS Our students will participate in the DAEMUN III online conference titled ‘Securing our Future’ on 14 May. One of our student delegates, Roy Song, successfully applied for a Student Officer position on the WHO Committee and will be the ‘Assistant President’. Roy has been a delegate since Year 7, has lots of experience and won the Best Delegate award at JEJUMUN last October. This position is an honour for our School and we are very proud. Good luck to all our delegates!

INTERVIEW WITH MODU MAGAZINE Read Jeslyn (Seojung) Park’s interview with MODU magazine here. The MODU DREAMER section of the youth career magazine allows teenagers to share their stories with other teenagers. Jeslyn was a winner of the ‘2021 Korean Talent Award’ which is the focus of her story. (Provided by MODU) Link
