PRINCIPAL’S LETTER Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju It was a real pleasure to be able to have parents on campus in the PAC attending the Year 6 production of ‘The Three Questions’. We were all treated to a wonderful production which involved all of Year 6 and displayed their many talents: acting, singing, playing some original musical instruments and dancing. This was a whole school effort and thanks go to the teachers who supported them from the Junior School as well as teachers from the Art, Dance, Drama and Music departments. It was also delightful to see the Year 10 students assisting in the production. I also wish the Year 6 students, who are away on their OutDoor Education residential trip on the mainland with teachers, a very enjoyable experience. Academically it is a challenging time for students in Year 11 and 13 who still have IGCSE and IBDP examinations continuing. In fact, the final two IGCSE examinations occur on the 20 and 21 June, after the end of term! It is also a very busy time for the Year 10 and Year 12 students who are engaged in work for the assessed parts of their examination programmes with coursework or IAs. I have also been delighted to see students in Years 7-9 engaged in Individual Project Work and various Stem Projects. This term has also seen an explosion of students developing their passions in various areas and obviously we have hundreds of students preparing for the Arts Festival, or the Visual Art Show to showcase their talents. The NLCS Jeju Middle School Rugby Squad will compete at the 51st National Rugby Championships on 26 May. As well as representing NLCS Jeju, the students have been selected to represent the Jeju Sports Council at the championships. The squad attended the Jeju Sports Council opening ceremony on Thursday 19 May. We wish them all every success both in their preparations over the coming weeks and at the competition. The whole School is also preparing for our visitors from NLCS for the Inspection Visit during the week beginning the 23 May and also Governors for the Summer Board Meeting on the 1 and 2 June. Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

ENRICHMENT WEEK STORIES LATIN AND PHILOSOPHY WEEK During the enjoyable Latin and Philosophy Enrichment week our Year 7 students heard a lecture on Socrates which included an entertaining reading from Plato’s Republic, as well Mr. Mundy’s Barbarian lecture, see his article. There were also several lunchtime activities including a derivative (words that come from Latin) challenge, a mythology quiz and display, Roman Board games and a Roman phrases display. Several staff and students also made use of a Roman Soldier Photo-opportunity. Thank you to all the students who helped and attended these events and to the teachers who arranged such interesting activities.

BARBARIAN IDENTITIES Thank you to Mr. Munday, who gave a lecture to our students on 11 May, he says “The phrase barbarian today is associated with someone who is uncivilised, cruel and unclean. This phrase comes from the Romans and Ancient Greeks. This phrase is clear to us today but there is no clear definition of a barbarian from the Roman perspective. They used this phrase barbarian, the most notable being Roman general Julius Caesar and Roman historian Tactitus. What makes a Roman barbarian changes consistently throughout the Roman period and Ancient Historians link the Roman word barbarus to the Romans’ numerous conflicts with the western Germanic tribes. Unlike the Romans, the Ancient Greeks did define a barbarian. The Ancient Greek bárbaros was used to label all foreigners (including the Romans). We also believe that the origins of the word is onomatopoeic because the “bar bar” sound represents the perception of other languages to the Ancient Greeks.”
CAREERS EDUCATION EVENT On 6 May we held a Careers Education event at School for our Year 10 students. A number of external speakers, from a wide variety of careers, and two of our own Year 13 students, gave inspirational and informative talks to our students. Special thanks to: Ms. Adele Vitale (Professional Doula) Mr. Mike Forster (Advertising Agency CEO) Mr. Mike Kim (Product and Graphic Designer) Mr. Robb Harker (EDM Agency Director) Mr. Jaesung Lee (Architect) Ms. Kate Edwards (Game Industry Cultural Consultant) Angelina Lee (Year 13) Elysia Bae (Year 13)
OTHER STORIES FROM AROUND THE SCHOOL YEAR 6 PRODUCTION Our Year 6 production of ‘The Three Questions’, a Korean Folktale, was outstanding! If you missed the performance you can still watch our livestream here. A huge congratulations to all of our Year 6 students - every student had a role, whether that was on stage performing or behind the scenes making the set and props, providing technical support and much more, this was a real whole year group effort.

FOBISIA SHORT STORY COMPETITION 2022 Our very own David Kwon has won this year’s FOBISIA Short Story Competition, in the Year 3 - Year 4 category! The theme was ‘Memories’ and David wrote an exciting story titled ‘The Memory Cafe” - find out what magical secret the teabags at the Memory Cafe possess, by reading his winning entry: here. In an exclusive interview with David, he explained that his passion for reading led to him having the courage to write his own stories. His love of reading started when his Mum would read to him when he was young, he now reads every day, even if he has lots of homework and is busy - he says “you can always find time to read, even if for just a short time”. David does not have any additional classes outside of school, instead he studies at home on his own. He starts his homework as soon as he returns home, organising it by the deadline date. If he completes his homework he will do some additional self study, read or play boardgames with his Mum. David’s advice to all students - “Just read! Read whenever you can! It will improve your English Language skills, it will increase your vocabulary, it will help with your writing skills. Read in other languages too, it will also help improve those language skills!” Currently reading: Frankenstein Favourite book(s): Harry Potter

BOOKSALE UPDATE The Library and Service Ambassadors visited the Yehyangwon Orphange in Hallim to donate the incredible 3.5 million won they raised from their secondhand book sale. This money will be used to replace a damaged floor. The students were able to speak at length to the staff at the orphanage and have a look around, before meeting some of the children who live there. Very kindly, Year 5 students Tejy Jang, Sean Yoon, Lucy Kim and Hayoon Cho, also donated a 200 000 won gift voucher they recently received from KCTV for participating in a recording of ‘The Lion King’.
We are very proud of our kind and generous students!

BEE ASSEMBLY As part of our Bee Week activities, five NLCS Jeju students lead a very informative and thought provoking assembly on bees. They focused on the rapid and worrying decline of bees around the world, they explained why bee numbers are worryingly low and what impact that has on the world. NLCS Jeju bee keeping may be small, but if we all do our part - we can make a difference and literally help to save the world. Watch the presentation here. “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” - Albert Einstein
