NLCS JEJU NEWSLETTER 17 June 2022

6 • VALEDICTORY • UGC NEWS • ARTS FESTIVAL

PRINCIPAL’S LETTER Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju The academic year has drawn to a close with the usual celebration assemblies in the Senior and Junior Schools. As always we have much to celebrate here as students have achieved so much be it in their academic or the co curriculum. What has been particularly encouraging to see over the last few weeks is the greater community feel with us being able to have more events and performances including Sports events which have seen students coming together and for there also to be parents and other visitors around school. Therefore we were able to have a great Arts Festival this year with more professionals and alumni in attendance running workshows and participating in performances with our students. We could have more students in to watch along with their parents which gave us some enthusiastic audiences. We are indebted to the planning and tremendous efforts of our staff in the Art, Dance, Drama and Music departments led by AVP Neil Tamlyn who along with many student leaders, the Tech Team for the theatres, teachers across the school and of course those students who participated to produce such an outstanding Arts Festival. We have also had a number of events to encourage students to socialise and to build up their teamwork skills to develop greater collaboration this term. Sports Day was enthusiastically participated in by both Senior and Junior Schools and thanks go to all who organised the events so successfully. Students were loud and very encouraging for their fellow House participants! It has been wonderful to see House reinvigorated once more in both Junior and Senior Schools and the biggest cheers and excitement in celebration assemblies is always as the results of the houses are announced. The end of an academic year is a time of reflection as well as some sadness. This year has been very difficult as we have had to operate with restrictions and measures which have constantly changed due to the pandemic which has impacted on our community. As we come out of the pandemic we know clearly how important the focus must be to rebuild once more community and cooperation. Sadness too as we are saying goodbye to our class of 2022, some students returning to other countries and of course some staff who are moving onto other schools to further their professional careers. On behalf of our community we want to thank all our leaving staff for their service and commitment to NLCS Jeju. We wish them and their families health and happiness in the future. For the rest of our community we wish you all a wonderful summer and we look forward to welcoming you back in August along with new students and staff.

Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

ARTS FESTIVAL 2022 An incredible week, made possible due to the number of talented students, alumni and teachers at NLCS Jeju - who all volunteered their time to work together to create something spectacular. Thank you to all our performers and everyone who supported them - including the tech crews (staff and students) and student media teams, supervising teachers, Marketing, ONLJ alumni and to the audiences who showed great appreciation. NLCS drumline performed in several locations around Seogwipo and Sagye. The students showed fantastic team spirit in helping each other and setting up for the concerts in record time. We were invited back as the owners of the venues were thoroughly impressed by their performances and impeccable behaviour. Go Drumline! “What I’ve learned from this trip would be cooperating in a team to make a better outcome.” Brian Yongjun Kim Y7 “It was a wonderful experience to perform in front of others outside of school as a drumline member. In particular, I will never forget the cheers of the audience and the drinks(Gatorade) they gave me. The teachers and some of the audience danced while performing, making it even more passionate and fun to play. Overall, it was an enjoyable drumline trip!” Uran Amy Seo Y10 (Video)

MUSIC ONLINE COLLABORATION PROJECT Mr. John Herbison - “We have finished recording this year’s collaboration project with NLCS SIngapore and world famous Jazz pianist and singer, Liane Carroll. Liane has been working with students online and has conducted a master class with them as well as a private concert which showed the breadth and depth of her immense talent as a performer. With over 90 students involved from both schools. Through the year students have been working hard, learning the music and recording their parts. Students have been involved in learning how to record, mix, light, film, direct, choreograph, and of course perform (dancers and musicians). Most of the rehearsals and recording sessions have taken place at lunchtimes or break times as well during our music production Bryant, The Ellington Studio which shows the tremendous commitment our students have towards the performing arts at our school. A huge congratulations to DJ Baik in Year 11 who, for the second year, has taken on the task of editing the video which has taken countless hours to get it to a very professional standard. We hope you enjoy our version of John Bettis’ and Steve Porcaro’s ‘Human Nature’ You can watch our previous projects here. 2020-2021 - ALL NIGHT LONG 2019-2020 - SUNNY

UNIVERSITY ACCEPTANCES Though the application and offer process to universities is not yet complete, below are some of the acceptances that we have already received. We are so proud of all our students and the fantastic offers they have received. Full details of all results and our School profile will be provided in August/September once we know all our results and destinations.

List

UGC - AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES TOUR Our University Guidance Counsellors are experts in their field. In order to give our students the best advice when selecting universities, the team invites universities to visit NLCS Jeju and in turn they visit overseas universities - as the only way to know what a university is really like, is to experience it in person. In May, Ms. Izabella Sloczynska and Mr. Victor Cho visited the following US universities: Boston University, Boston College, Berklee College of Music, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, Rhode Island Institute of Design, Yale University, Columbia University, Princeton University, Chicago University and Northwestern University.

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO On Friday 10 June, a member of the Admissions Team at The University of Chicago met with our Year 12 students.

PRESIDENTIAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP 20 students are selected each year in Korea to receive this scholarship, the recipients receive $50,000 per year for 4 years. Congratulations to two NLCS Jeju students who were selected this year - Seonghyun (Sean) Yoon and Hyeyeon (Angela) Seo. Hyeyeon says - “It’s a great honour to receive this scholarship as it means that my dreams and potential as a scientist is being recognized by the country. NLCS Jeju supported me in providing opportunities in science (especially computer science for me) and various service experiences: from initiating one to joining services freely. Service has been and still is a huge part of my life and I am planning to continue my service work wherever I go. I would encourage everyone to at least try a service bryant before deciding whether or not to do it! We wish her all the best with her Computer Science degree at USC.

MEDICINE OFFER Lots of students have received excellent offers, Sooyong Sung shares with us her offer news and explains how NLCS Jeju supported her from when she joined in Year 9. Congratulations to Sookyong and thank you for sharing your thoughts. Name: Sookyong Sung (Seyfried) Year: Year 13 Joined NLCS Jeju: Year 9 University Destination: King’s College London Subject: Medicine MBBS Why Medicine MBBS? As part of the IBDP you have to complete an extended essay, my subject choice was around dementia and from that I learnt that I wanted to have a profession that helped care for and educate others. I love children and hope to specialise in Paediatric Psychiatric medicine. Whilst studying at NLCS Jeju I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local orphanage - which inspired me to want to work with children. I decided to study in the UK as I want to learn more about the NHS and the equality of care that is offered in the UK. For me, being a doctor is not about the potential earnings, more about working for others. How has NLCS Jeju supported you? Emotional Counselling Being able to talk through my thoughts and feelings on a regular basis really helped me. Students should know that the team is there for general conversations and not just when support is needed. NLCS Jeju Alumni (ONLJ) - Work experience As I have no family or friends in the medical profession I struggled to find work experience which is needed for university applications. However, the NLCS Jeju alumni was a great resource and through the ONLJ I was able to find a number of work experience opportunities. Though I could not work in the NLCS Jeju Medical Centre, the team allowed me to volunteer at School events where I could assist nurses with some aspect of their work.

Boarding I learnt lots of life skills (such as working as a team and living harmoniously with others) and was able to seek advice and support from older students in the same home. I was also able to attend church every Sunday which introduced me to students from other homes, year groups and alumni who all provide support, guidance and friendship. Lots of opportunities I enjoyed being a House Captain. The School listens to our ideas. If we have suggestions of ways they can support us, opportunities that can be offered or activities that we want to do in boarding - they help make our dreams come true! “The IBDP is challenging but NLCS Jeju provides support and guidance in all areas of School life. If you are considering NLCS Jeju I would recommend you to find out more about the School and if you do join the School I would also recommend that you are a boarding student.”

CHARITY T-SHIRTS Saddened by the number of abandoned dogs in Jeju, Jusung Lee, Seunghyeon Koo and Eunbae Lim started a charity in February with the aim of raising money to make the lives of these dogs better and to encourage people to adopt dogs and not buy them. They design and sell t-shirts via Instagram and all proceeds go to Jeju Alps (A Jeju based dog charity). Jusung has always been a dog lover, he and his friends felt that a well designed and fashionable t-shirt would be a desirable item to purchase but also give them a platform to spread their message and promote their Instagram page. To date they have raised 600,000 KRW. Jusung said he ‘admires the policy in France which bans the sale of dogs - meaning people can only adopt dogs’ he hopes that all countries will follow this legislation.

DODAM DODAM - SINGLE PARENT PROJECT TEAM Well done to Sujeong (Crystal) Park and Chaemin (Angela) Park who held a secondhand clothing and book drive in June. The items were donated to single parents and their children in Yehyangwon.

ONLJ All of our graduating students are welcome to join the ONLJ alumni group. Visit our website for more information or email Ms. Yuri Shin - alumnioffice@nlcsjeju.kr for more information. The ONLJ is a community based around the world, connecting all our previous students together for the mutual benefit of work, support, friendship, study and much more! Don’t miss the chance to be part of something wonderful.

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL AWARD 2021-22 It is only when children step out of their comfort zone do they really grow and learn. This is true both in and outside of the classroom. Through a combination of how well the government managed the pandemic and brave leadership, our school managed to keep our Duke of Edinburgh International Award programme running alongside our Bryant programme throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. This is something the school should be very proud of and I believe the benefits to our pupils will last a lifetime. Our International Award pupils have visited Hyeopjae, Gimnyeong, Chuja Island, Hwasun, The National Cemetery, Baekasan, Andong and Cheongnyangsan during the pandemic. They have experienced wonderful things and pushed themselves both individually and as a team. A huge thank you to Ms. Oldfield, Mr. Machin, Mr. Coll, Mr. Scarlett, Ms. Donaldson, Mr. Quinn, Ms. Bull, Mrs. Sommerville, Ms. Sangster, Dr. Levett, the UGC team and everybody else who has supported the International Award programme throughout the pandemic. Next year we are running Bronze (Year 10), Silver (Year 11) and Gold (Year 12) cohorts for the first time which is very exciting. Have a wonderful summer everybody - see you in August! Mr. Chaddock.

JAM SCIENCE VOLUNTEERS DEHUMIDIFIER PROJECT Following on from their previous project (Upcycling: Let’s build an Elastic Band Powered Boat!), Seobin (Rayne) Lee and Woobin (Remy) Lee, the co-chairs of JAM Science Volunteers, have an exciting new project! • Collecting discarded and unwanted dehumidifiers - aptly renamed “Thirsty Hippos” • Turning them from single-use products to multi-useable widgets • Modify them - recharge them with water absorbents, specifically calcium carbonate • Place in key areas around NLCS Jeju to absorb moisture over the summer break • Contribute to a mildew free and healthy environment to study “Due to Jeju’s humid climate (and especially the notoriously humid summers), dehumidifiers such as thirsty hippos come in very handy for keeping studios/dress rooms dry and fresh, free from mould or mildew. These make use of an absorbent material such as sodium polyacrylate, which collects the moisture in the air and prevents the surrounding environment from becoming damp.” Look out for one of the 20 Thirsty Hippos around the School.

TRANSITION DAY Some lovely photos of our Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Day in May. We are looking forward to seeing you all in Year 7 in August!

TACSI AWARD Year 10 spent the last Friday afternoon of May celebrating their huge effort and commitments to extracurricular activities over the last school year as part of the TACSI Award program. The TACSI Award is a new initiative designed to encourage students to be reflective about their CCA and Service endeavours and aims to imbue them with greater meaning and substance as well as preparing them for the CAS element of the IB Diploma Program . As part of the celebration, organised and run by the brilliant team of Year 10 Tutor Group Representatives, many students took part in a talent show and some received Gold TACSI awards. These were given to students who submitted excellent reflections for Service, Creative and Active pursuits over the year and demonstrated multiple character strengths throughout the process. Silver and Bronze Awards were given out in tutor times this week. Overall the event served to highlight that so many of the young people at NLCS not only work tirelessly in the pursuit of academic achievement but spend huge amounts of effort and time learning and developing through countless other avenues. Congratulations Year 10.

NLCS HUB PODCAST - SPATIUM Spatium is an international podcast where the Hub team interviews guests from around the world to discuss various topics. Shona Hyun Park, the Spatium Director, says “the name Spatium conveys the meaning of a thinking space where everyone can share everything - distance does not define us.” Previous podcasts have featured guests from Germany, Puerto Rico, London, Dubai, America….the 7th episode (click here) sees Shona interviewing a software engineer who majored in Computer Science to show the reality behind a hugely preferred academic field in the society. Spatium is edited by Jihoon Andrew Kim, visit the Spatium website to listen to previous and future podcasts.

ASIA RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIPS - TRANSLATOR We were proud to learn that Joohwan Son (class of 2018) worked as an official translator at the recent 2022 Asia Rugby Championships. “I was able to experience such a good opportunity because of my past rugby experience which was organised by Mr. Dan Long.”

JUNIOR SCHOOL DROP OFF We understand that the School drop off can be difficult, but it is very important for the safety of all our children and other pedestrians that all car drivers act with caution and consideration to those around them. Cars should form an orderly queue and children should only be allowed to exit the car at the designation drop off point. Allowing children to exit the car sooner puts them at risk. New road signs will be installed soon and further action will be taken against those who ignore the requirements.
