Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju
Your sincerely, Lynne PrincipalOldfield
PRINCIPAL’S LETTER
Over the last few weeks we have been discussing the value of community and this has been a theme of assemblies and the work of the houses in engendering a sense of belonging to NLCS Jeju through house competition and the pastoral system. This is also seen in the lively house activities in Junior School. The sense of community is also very strong in the boarding homes and this year we are pleased that some houses are now full as the value of a British boarding education is fully recognised as seen by the interest from current and new students. With the easing of some COVID precautionary measures it has been possible to have opportunities for the School to come together on a regular basis as we are once again able to have weekly assemblies in person rather than relying on live streaming to tutor groups. Linked to this it has been beneficial to have parents once more coming in and participating in School events so that they too feel part of and understand the NLCS Jeju community. We already have begun to have visitors including academic speakers and universities coming into school and many more are planned to visit and be guest speakers to our students in societies and enrichment weeks. Please do let us know if you have expertise and passion for a subject and would be prepared to guest speak to students. We would love to hear from you!
This week we are celebrating the successes of last year’s Year 11 students who have achieved record breaking results at NLCS Jeju in their IGCSE examinations. Their celebration today has given us the opportunity to join with them and their parents to recognise this success and to wish them well as they have begun their journey through the IB Diploma Programme. What is even more remarkable is that these record breaking results are from a year where we have predominantly boys and yet worldwide girls have been outperforming boys! We will be finalising the statistics for you once we get the final results back following any remarks, but it is interesting to note that boarders have outperformed day students which is testament to the academic support they receive in the boarding homes in an atmosphere where the well-being of students is paramount as they are encouraged to have a balanced approach to study.

Four NLCS Jeju students received “Honourable Mention” in this summer’s competition.
Students always moan in mathematics lessons “How is this going to help me in the future” or “How is this even related to our lives.” We used to partially agree that mathematics is a very theory-oriented subject but after participating, we gained insight on how mathematics can be used to change the world and how the complex equations and letters on our maths teachers’ board can actually connect to real-life situations.”
INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICS MODELING COMPETITION
Congratulations to Sehun Jeong, Jihong Kim, Kyubin Min and Jinwoo Chun (now Y12): “The IMMC is a mathematical modeling competition requiring its participants to apply mathematical knowledge to real world problems in order to propose possible solutions. This year’s challenge was to compare different boarding and disembarking methods in various types of aircrafts to determine the most time-efficient method. To find the most efficient system, our team had to first brainstorm all the variables and assumptions. We then applied 3 commonly used boarding/disembarking methods and 2 other devised boarding methods to 3 types of planes(one entrance aircrafts, two entrance aircrafts, and flying wing aircrafts). By collecting the data from our coded model, we could find the most efficient boarding/disembarking method for each aircraft. The whole experience was extremely rewarding yet arduous as well. Time management was key as we had so much to write within a limit of only 5 days. It was hard to find time within the school term but the process of understanding, analysing, and solving real world problems was thrilling as it was something we would not be asked to do within the school curriculum.

Last month, nine teams from NLCS Jeju participated in the National Statistics Competition, hosted by Statistics Korea. Three teams successfully completed round one and were required to present their posters to the judges in person and answer some challenging questions. One team produced a poster explaining the current situation of waste drugs, and the ideal solution. Ms. Minsoo Cha said “It was indeed a valuable experience in increasing our knowledge in the field of Statistics.”

Other News NPQML SUCCESS
Congratulations to Dr. Max Karamalla, Mr. Glenn Roberts and Ms. Aisleen Renshaw who have all completed The National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML). The qualification is accredited by the Institute of Education in the UK and supports the professional development of aspiring and serving middle leaders. This qualification consists of a programme of seminars focusing on various aspects of school leadership and culminates in a project that improves student academic outcomes and an increase in the capacity of their team.
30 nominated Korean representatives took part in this year’s camp, three of whom were NLCS Jeju students - Seok Hyeon Moon, Jeong Gyoun Song (Luke) and Stella Han. Here, Stella provides insight into the camp“The idea of Asian Science Camp (ASC) was co-proposed in September 2005 after the Lindau Science Meeting by Professor Yuan-Tseh Lee from Taiwan, the 1986 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, and Professor Masatoshi Koshiba from Japan, the 2002 Nobel Laureate in Physics. ASC is an annual event that aims to enlighten science-talented youths through discussions and dialogues with top scholars and technologists in the world and to promote international friendship and cooperation among the best young students of the next generation in Asia. ASC2022 korea was the first camp in 2 years as it had been postponed due to covid. It was carried out in the Institute of Basic Science, located in the city of Daejeon, also known as the Silicon Valley of Korea, being a home to numerous private and public research institutes, centres and science parks. From my participation, I found the insightful lectures from Nobel laureates of varying fields of science to be invigorating as a student aspiring to seek a career in research. The opportunity to listen to such diverse collection of lectures allowed me to realise that even in the narrowed field of applied medical science, to become a researcher in the field would mean not only studying the basis of biology and chemistry but also collaborating with researchers of other dispositions in the field of physics, data science, engineering and more. This prestigious opportunity allowed me to decide that, even as a student aspiring to study medicinal sciences, I would seize all opportunities to broaden my perspective into other fields of sciences as well.”

To help our new students and staff navigate their way around our Senior School, a new map with a key has been created. Map. We will soon create one for our First and Junior School buildings.
Research tells us that active, social activities lead to the development of higher-level thinking and significantly boost communicative, leadership and self-management capabilities. In an inclusive and collaborative environment our students are afforded the best opportunity to build both their own self-esteem and sense of responsibility towards others. By enhancing our students’ ability to collaborate we also afford them the best preparation for real life social and employment situations. Top universities, such as MIT, want to recruit students who are exceptional at collaboration and prioritise such skills when assessing applications.
Our Sixth Form focus for this academic year, both academically and pastoral, is building our communicative and collaborative skills. Communication is highly valued across the IB programmes as one of the five approaches to learning that all IB students work to develop. Here at NLCS Jeju, our IB Diploma classes offer multiple opportunities for our students to develop their teamwork and collaboration.
On Friday 19 August, our Year 12 began their IB Diploma DP journey with our first ever DP Induction Day for all Year 12 students. It was a busy day, with a carousel of workshops, where both students and staff could get to know each other better and explore what it means to be an IB student.
After an intensive morning of workshops we then celebrated the start of the Diploma through some friendly competition at the bowling alley. Profiles
Our Induction Day Goals: to develop collaborative skills and to build our tutor groups into effective teams, to introduce key elements of the IB programme - Group 4 Project Workshop, Academic Integrity Workshop, to enhance our well-being and build trust - Building a Group Workshop, Positive Psychology Workshop, Practical Yoga Session, to develop House Spirit.

YEAR 12 INDUCTION
As the year progresses our Year 12 students will continue to build their collaborative skills in follow up sessions in selected tutor times, led by our Head of Drama, Mr Ian Pierson. This compliments our wider Tutor Programme which is framed around developing the Learner Profile attributes whilst also allowing time for our busy Diploma students to plan and reflect on their CAS activities. During the induction Shona and her fellow students took part in various activities, such as IB learner profiles, STEM projects, drama, yoga and bowling. “We all learned that IB was also about collaboration and being an internationally open-minded learner, and that IB is all about balancing and finding your true academic passion.”
YEAR 12 INDUCTION - STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
Hyun Park (Shona) attended our Year 12 Induction Day and reflected on her time at NLCS Jeju, since joining in Year 9 and now starting her IBDP.
Shona believes that her IGCSE studies have “built up her skills and knowledge” preparing her for the IBDP. She still felt a combination of “nervousness and exhilaration” before starting Year 12 but returning to School and attending the induction changed those feelings to anticipation of what “new unforgettable experiences” she would gain.
“I believe that the induction day was a definite “Isuccess.”amlooking forward to diving deeper into my learning and expanding my academic interests, with the six subjects I am passionate about.”

Shona hopes to study abroad once she graduates from NLCS Jeju. She strongly feels that “NLCS Jeju is there for you to guide you and support you towards a successful lifestyle and provides colossal opportunities outside the classroom to expand our passion. I was able to grow my leadership skills, communication skills, resilience and collaboration skills which are all the values that IB aims at.” Thomas Zhu 6) Saturday 24 September

A message from Eunju Seo, Big 8 Cultural Awareness Ambassador - “The Cultural Awareness Committee (CAC) is a committee that stands by the vision statement, “to have reflective, open-minded global citizens with perspectives on customs, morals, arts, literature, and principles of the diverse cultures around the world”. We wish to appreciate cultural diversity as fostering cultural awareness is an essential step towards making sure that all members of the school community feel able to learn in a safe, inclusive environment.

Cultural Awareness Committee news BOARDING STUDENTS - IGCSE SUCCESS
From Diversity Week to celebrations of various cultural dates such as St.Patrick’s day and Christmas, the CAC has been involved in creating opportunities for all students to become involved in spreading awareness about cultural diversity. This year, we wish to take another step forward, publicising cultural events that tend to be less recognised through the “Global Highlights”, which will be integrated into the NLCS school newsletter this academic year. Furthermore, in order to best represent and celebrate the different cultures in our school community, we would like to invite all students, parents, faculty and staff to contribute to our plans for the 2022-23 academic year. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please let us know through the google forms.
