Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju

For all of us in our community over the last few weeks there have been moments of tremendous elation and then moments of heartbreak and sadness. We witnessed the happiness, cooperation and fun experienced by our students as they participated in their House Music events, the camaraderie we see around the school and cooperation and fun seem in their passion in lessons as well as their social activities at breaks, lunchtimes and in CCAs. However as a community we have to support each other as well in moments of tragedy and pain as witnessed during the horrendous events at Itaewon which have impacted on so many of us. As a community we offer our condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of all who have suffered loss.

We are fully aware that parents’ circumstances change and we wish success and happiness for students who leave us to continue their education elsewhere. One consequence of this is that for those students for whom there may not have been places initially we seek permission to adjust the allocation of students and classes accordingly. In January after ‘Seollal’ we will be welcoming some students into a year 3 and a year 4 class.

For other students in year 9 and 11 they are deciding their choices for IGCSEs and the IB diploma Programme respectively. We encourage students to discuss with other students, their teachers as well as their families, suitable choices to make. At IGCSE they should also continue to take a broad range of subjects including the Arts as in the IBDP breadth is required.

The School is working closely with our sister schools on ensuring that we all share a common philosophy rooted in our aims and objectives as NLCS schools of ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion’. We therefore look forward to the events and activities organised by the Cultural Awareness Committee for Diversity Week beginning on Monday 14 November. We have many visitors joining us to work with our community from across the world and so I hope that all of our community will respond with interest, enthusiasm and participate in full.

The new Astro Turf was officially opened by our Chair of Governors, Ms. Helen Stone, on 26 October. Joined by our Governors and Big 8 - the pitch was used within moments of the ribbon being cut. The new Astro Turf replaces the old grass pitch which is located near the Medical Centre. The high spec, multi-purpose pitch is in addition to the other on campus sports facilities that all our students have access to and we know it will be the stage for many sporting triumphs in the future.

MIDDLE LEADERS CONFERENCE -DUBAI

During the first weekend of the recent term break, 6 members of the NLCS Jeju teaching team travelled to the UAE to visit the NLCS sister school in Dubai. Over that weekend, our teachers were joined by members of the NLCS families from London, Dubai and Singapore in an effort to share good practice and to learn more about educational leadership from some highly experienced educators. In total there were 31 teachers, each holding middle leadership positions, working together and learning to lead from selected senior leaders and established names from the world of education. Professor Dave Pedder and Dr Elaine Wilson, formerly of Cambridge University gave truly inspirational messages to the cohort and urged collaboration in pedagogical ideas and research methodology. Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teachers, also spent time with the group taking a deep dive into the world of teaching leadership. Members of the Senior leadership team in Dubai rounded off the conference with considered and applicable techniques and tools to develop the skills of the participants.

This conference was the opportunity to make a collaborative bond among faculty members and continuity to share best practices. There were one-to-one sessions among staff members to learn about the strategies used in different departments and cultures in NLCS family schools.

The conference was a clear success and the organisers have already begun discussing and planning the next one to be held in another of the NLCS stellar family of high achieving schools.

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

Three NLCS Jeju students attended an event at Jeju City Hall, Traffic Centre, to contribute to the National Freedom of Movement Governance Establishment Agreement. Alex Yang, Benjamin Han and Kevin Kim (all Year 10) acknowledged that for those with mobility issues there are often ‘barriers’ in society which disadvantage them – particularly related to transportation. Keen to ensure that these barriers are removed, they have worked together on a project – compiling data in order to create a community map that informs everyone of areas that are accessible and which are not, detailing the barrier. Mr. Warren Neiland, who joined the students at the event, said “It’s an exciting project that the students have taken on as a team and will have significant benefits for the GEC community in which NLCS student are leading”

There were very strange goingson earlier this week, when our Year 2 students arrived at School to discover very large footprints along the corridor and furniture tipped over! With the help of their parents they looked high and low for clues to figure out what happened and who had invaded their classroom over the half term break. Take a look at the photos of our detectives hard at work!
