North London Collegiate School Jeju

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju

As we approach the Winter Holidays and for many the celebration of Christmas, NLCS Jeju has been showcasing all that makes us so special. We have seen academics of the highest as students in Year 13 interview for places at Oxbridge, brilliant and stimulating academic enrichment weeks such as in Geography and English, and the plethora of Cocurricular activities in so many areas.

It has been delightful to have our parent community in school to celebrate with us and we are pleased that so many parents now feel comfortable about returning to school to participate in Parents as Partners workshops as well as watching their children, be it in sports activities or arts events. It was wonderful to have such enthusiastic audiences for the First School Production which as usual was a tremendous team effort and engaged every child. The Winter concerts for music have been of the highest standard and the orchestral and ensemble performances were of the highest calibre and a real treat for all of us. Our thanks go to the tremendous efforts of all the students across the school for their commitment but also the leadership of the arts staff as well as student leaders. For those of you who have missed these events they were live streamed and are now on our Youtube channel.

Our students are still ensuring they advocate for a better world both globally and within our community and so it has been delightful to witness the work and understanding of our Year 1 environmental protesters as well as to hear about the works of some societies and the School Council. Their contributions are highly valued and their work does bring about change in society both here at NLCS Jeju and beyond. Student commitment is also evident in all the preparation for the Christmas bazaar which is on Monday and I sincerely thank all of you for your support either in the work you are doing at the bazaar or through supporting it. The causes we support are excellent and our support does make a difference to the lives of a number of communities.

As the term draws to a close I would like to wish all of you a restful and enjoyable Winter break and we extend our best wishes to all for 2023 which we hope will bring us all health and happiness in a peaceful world.

sincerely,

GEOGRAPHY ENRICHMENT

WEEK

Geography is a varied and exciting subject and for this Enrichment Week our Geography Department, societies and students focused on one of its many topics- sustainability. There were lunchtime lectures and documentary showings, as well as a number of informative stands in the corridor.

Students and staff were able to learn more about an app that scans barcodes to show how eco-friendly a product is, how to make sustainable food choices, the impact of fast fashion on the planet, how sustainability differs from country to country and radioactive waste management, to name a few.

Mr. Dorian Brown also recreated Professor Edward Hawkins climate stripes along the corridor to give a compelling visualisation for us all - ‘No words. No numbers. No graphs. Just a series of vertical coloured bars, showing the progressive heating of our plant in a single, striking image.’ More Pictures. https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAifRR

ENGLISH ENRICHMENT WEEK The Main Event

Another excellent Enrichment Week - thank you to our English Department and our English Society for arranging everything. We enjoyed poems read by teachers throughout the day and lectures. There were many competitions too - a spelling bee, a meme creation competition, book cover drawing competition, a ‘guess the main character’ competition and a literacy science competition! https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAiocd

Our students recently delivered the gifts purchased with donations from our community to the Jenam Children’s Centre and Yehyangwon Group Home. Thank you to our Service team, students and to those who donated. Read more here….

Jenam Children’s Centre

The Jenam Children’s Centre volunteer work began in the 2017-2018 academic year. All of the members visit the Jenam Children’s Center every Saturday to deliver unforgettable and precious time to the children. The Jenam Children’s Centre volunteer team is providing both emotional and academic support to the children by teaching subjects such as English and mathematics or conducting various activities such as making Pepero and even dodgeball through regular discussions.

This winter, the Jenam Children’s Centre Volunteer Team held its seventh “Be a Santa” event to deliver small but meaningful gifts to children for Christmas. After receiving a list of gifts that the children of the Jenam Children’s Centre wanted, a small amount of money was donated through the participation of parents, students, and faculty of NLCS Jeju. Our volunteers all worked together to wrap the children’s gifts and delivered them to the children of the Jenam Children’s Centre on December 3rd. Seeing the children smiling brightly with gifts in their hands made us feel better. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to parents, students, and faculty members who participated. Thanks to your support and help, we were able to successfully finish the meaningful event called “Be a Santa.”

Our Jenam Children’s Center volunteer team will continue to make efforts to ensure that all Jenam’s children can live bravely without losing their bright smiles as they are now.

BE SANTA

Yehyangwon Group Home

This Christmas was an important anniversary for Yehyangwon Bryant as it was a day of sharing a promisingenjoyment with the childrenwho firmly believe in Santa. At the thought of the children jumping in grand enthusiasm and greeting us—the older brothers and sisters who appeared with huge red pouches—our members’ faces blossomed with warmhearted smiles. This is how we began preparing for the “Be a Santa” project—in the hope of deepening our friendship further with the children and creating unforgettable memories.

On the day of the event, we sneaked into the Yehyangwon building, displayed gift toys neatly, and hid ourselves to surprise them. After a short period of time, the children opened the door and faced the incredible gift packages from Santa Claus. The sight of the children running around the room with full euphoria touched our hearts. The head of the centre showed genuine gratitude to us, the children shared their gifts with us, Mr. Mark Kim and Ms. Jarvis watched the scene proudly, and the laughter of our team members bloomed in such a harmonious atmosphere; it felt like everyone became a family.

In the process of opening the piles of delivered boxes one by one and cutting the wrapping paper around to turn them into pretty gift packages, there was always active participation from our dedicated team members. I would like to express my gratitude to our team members who volunteered to give up their free time and always maintained a friendly atmosphere, working with a good heart. Furthermore, thanks to the enthusiastic support and donations from the entire school community, including parents, teachers, and students, we have been able to purchase loads of gifts for the children. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who made this journey possible. Without all of you and your silent support of the new challenges we attempted to take on, this project would not have been a success.

We will continue our efforts to build beautiful memories with the children of Yehyangwon. Inscribing valuable life lessons taught during this project in our hearts, we will promise to become a better Yehyangwon Bryant and show more development in the future. (written by Keonyi Kim)

ECONOMICS TRIP

Year 12 and 13 enjoyed a short trip to the production plant of Jeju Brewery recently organised by Ms. Paliwal. Students learnt of the importance of the clear water of Jeju for the brewing process, the discovery in the last 1,000 years of the 40,000 year history of brewing that yeast influences the unique taste of each beer enabling brands to be developed and the USP appealing to a younger demographic with beer for consumption with food. The group was treated to a tour of the production facilities and a question and answer session which also explained the history of the company.

IBDP HISTORY

IBDP History students have been busy the last few weeks acting out several role-plays. The Year 13 students took part in a Model UN role-play on China’s representation in the United Nations in 1971. The Year 12 students debated the terms of the Washington Naval Conference (1922), and the London Naval Conference (1930). They also re-enacted the story of the Chinese Communist Party’s Long March 1934-35 (the video will be linked in the newsletter after the winter vacation).

Role-play activities are a great way for students to understand and remember past events as well as develop the skills and attributes of the IB learner profile. By placing themselves in the shoes of historical characters, the students were able to gain greater understanding of why certain decisions were made and also develop their awareness of historical perspectives.

The past - NLCS Jeju

ONLJ Profile

Jerry Hanbyul Rim Class of 2021 UCLA Political Science

memories

“For me, it is di icult to fully comprehend the notion of being an alumnus of NLCS Jeju. The days of sprinting across the astro turf, of writing last-minute essays in the library and of performing devised pieces in Studio One still feel like yesterday. However, at the same time, I realise that I am no longer the premature boy from Year 5 who secretly shed his tears in the bathroom of Harubang. Amongst the 8 and a half years that I spent at NLCS Jeju, there are specific moments that vividly remain in my mind. For instance, there were times when the other boys and I became FBI agents, executing our own Mission Impossible to save our electronics that lay beyond locked doors. Some times, we were athletes, glorious victors, even national champions: not mere students who study all day long, 9-to-5. I still remember not only the taste of jjajangmyeon that I had on Jindo beach but also of the salty tears that I wept a er a miraculous comeback in the National Championship final. I truly cherish these memories, these moments, as these fragments of experiences built the present ‘me’.”

The present - Life a er NLCS Jeju “Leaving this friendly but rather insular environment was challenging. For the first time in nearly a decade, I encountered individuals that come from distant social backgrounds and experiences. Like a bird arduously breaking its egg to embrace the bigger world, I struggled to acknowledge the 'bubble' that I lived inside and take steps beyond it. Nonetheless, I have faith in me, as in NLCS Jeju, I was taught to be resilient - to bounce back despite all adversities.”

The future - What is next? “I am joining the Army in December to complete my Military Service.”

ONLJ

39 NLCS Jeju students took part in the JejuMUN IX held at KISJ on 18-19 November 2022 - the first ‘live’ MUN since the pandemic. The event involved 250 Year 8 to 13 students from GEC schools debating a diverse range of historical, fictional, and contemporary topics within several different UN committees.

Well done to the following students for their outstanding work in preparing committee background guides, developing the rules of procedure, and running the event on the day through their work as chairs and co-chairs.

Eunju Seo (Yr 13 - Under Secretary General), Seojung (Jeslyn) Park (Yr 13 - UNSC Head Chair), Joona Kim (Yr 12 - UNSC Deputy Chair), Rahee Hong (Yr 12 - UNSC Associate Chair), SeongJoon (Steven) Yang (Yr 12 - ECOSOC Head Chair), Hayoung (Wendy) Lee (ECOSOC Deputy Chair), and Geumbee (Chandler) Ahn (ECOSOC Associate Chair) and Geonwoo (Geoff) Kim (Yr 11 - Fictional SC - Deputy Chair).

Whilst all the NLCS students participated brilliantly throughout the two-day conference, special mention must go to the following award winners in their respective UN committees:

• Dongwook (Warrick) Kwon (Yr 12) - Best Delegate for his work representing Poland in UNSC

• Lyulf Tuffs (Yr 11) - Best Delegate for his work representing Legolas in Fictional SC

• Kyungkyu (Richard) Park (Yr 12) - Outstanding Delegate for his work representing Russia in UNSC

• Minjune (Dan) Huh (Yr 10) - Outstanding Delegate for his work representing Iran in DISEC.

• Geon Ha (Eric) Hyun (Yr 12) - Honourable Mention for his work representing David McNee in the Iranian Embassy Crisis Committee

• Jaehoon (Roy) Song (Yr 10) - Honourable Mention for his work representing Janie Orlean in the fictional Crisis Committee ‘Don’t Look Up’

• Keonyi Kim (Yr 12) - Honourable Mention for his work representing Kim Kyu Sik in the Korean Cabinet Historical Crisis Committee

Mr. Anthony Quinn said “It was a pleasure to watch the students participate in vigorous debate, respond to the challenges of thinking critically on their feet, and doing so in a supportive and respectful environment. Well done to all participants and award winners.” More Photos
