he 2012 Tony Award winning musical, Once, makes a stop at Popejoy Hall. Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Sam Cieri, who plays Guy, shared how this haunting musical parallels his life and the character he plays. “I find a lot of myself in Guy. Right before doing this show, a year and a half ago, I gave up on music, very similar to the character, and I definitely had the moment like in the show where he walks away from it all. And [like Guy], I found my way back to music.”

Mackenzie Lesser-Roy, who plays Girl, the influential muse in Guy’s life, talks about the musical from her character’s point-of-view. “From Girl’s per6I

spective, Once is really about the journey of turning this man who doesn‘t believe in his music at all…into someone who is much more confident and someone who can share his music with the world. I think a lot of my character is in me. I think her passion and her love for people around her is definitely in me.”

Artistic Director Shaun Peknic feels that it’s the overall presentation of the band and performers that makes this musical such a unique experience.

“Martin Lowe (Musical Supervisor and Orchestrator) took those songs and turned them into incredible arrangements and orchestrations for 12 band members. So when you hear a song that was originally played by just Girl at a piano and all of a sudden you have cellos and violins and guitars and all these things supporting that music, it turns into something that’s transcendent on stage. The company is a band. They have to live and breathe as a band.”

TURN IT UP: RAWRR

R

AWRR! is a unique band that has been a staple of the Albuquerque music scene for several years. The band members push the boundaries of traditional songwriting with odd time signatures, and their ever-evolving sound, inimitable style, and melodic creations are a breath of fresh air.

RAWRR! carries the listener on a

progressive, transcendental journey of witty lyricism and skilled musicianship. With a blazing panache, RAWWR!’s stage presence is both captivating and inspiring. MAKE ‘EM LAUGH: BRIAN VANDERHOOF

H

ealthcare professional turned funny man, Brian Vanderhoof, splits his time between making people laugh and cry. Between shooting Indie films and MRIs, Brian finds time to visit open mics and perform in shows around Albuquerque. Raised by a father with a twisted sense of humor, a young Brian grew up on Monty Python, SNL, and the like, but waited until nearly two years ago to hit his first open mic.

Nerves killed his first attempt to take to the stage but with a little liquid courage he made it. “After bombing on stage in front of so many people so many times you get over it. Nothing really phases you after that,” Vanderhoof says. After those first, uncomfortable forays into live comedy, it didn’t take long before his writing ritual took over, and he began regularly attending open mics and including comedians in his film projects. Vanderhhoof says, “One fuels the other, I love both film and comedy. Comedy has helped me re8I

fine and shape my voice, which helps my film tremendously. Luckily comedy has introduced me to talented people who I enjoy working with.”

His latest project began its life as a 48-hour movie project in June 2015. It has since expanded into a short that he will be entering into film festivals.

Film aside, Vanderhoof would like his comedy to make him a more self-realized person. He says, “Comedy can bring me closer to being my truest self. A Comedy Central special would be great in the process, but being a better me is the first step. Honest self reflection will help me in my film career too.” Looking at peoples’ insides, shooting movies, or making jokes, Vanderhoof is a multi-talented up-and-comer who keeps his friends close and puts them to work. e is Freddie Mercury reincarnate, and Albuquerque will have the opportunity to witness Gary Mullen & The Works on stage at Popejoy Hall on March 17th. Mullen took a moment to sit down and talk about the icon he portrays and what his stage show offers fans of Queen.

Did you find it difficult to be Freddie Mercury and how did you prepare?

I didn’t find it difficult, as I’ve been a fan since I was a small kid and would pretend to be him. When I started professionally, I went back and watched concert footage and videos to study his movements and mannerisms.

What is it about Queen that make you a fan?

I love everything about them. Their fusion of so many musical styles, musicianship, songwriting, and their exciting live performances.

What can audiences expect and appreciate with your stage show?

We are trying to recreate a moment in time that you will never see again, Queen with Freddie. We try to make the show as exciting as we can every night and involve the audience as much as we can to make them really feel part of the whole concert experience.

What was it like to meet Brian May? Meeting Brian was amazing. It felt like a real “Wayne’s World” moment, but he was such a nice guy, and it was a fantastic experience.

What is your goal with every show?

Our goal is to give the audience 120%, every single night. As Freddie would say ‘Leave them deaf, blind, and wanting more.” NME - Teresa Ewers

NOW SHOWING: EDDIE THE EAGLE

T

hey had me at, “From the producers of Kingsman: The Secret Service.” I had the opportunity to check out a special screening of the upcoming movie Eddie the Eagle. Eddie the Eagle is based on the true story of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie Edwards, the British skier who, in 1988, became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. Taron Egerton, who played Eggsy in the action hit Kingsman, impressed me as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, transforming himself from the sexy, fitted-suit-wearing spy to the awkward, geeky, and far-from-athletic Edwards. Sporting a twisted posture and a huge underbite, Egerton is this innocent man-child.

Not the average-looking athlete, Edwards is determined to be

an Olympian, despite everyone around him, including his own father, telling him otherwise. After being denied a place on the Olympic ski team, Edwards discovers that he can still make it to the Olympics as a ski jumper, a category that no other athlete was competing in. The change in sport leads to a long line of challenges, including the British Olympic Committee changing the rules, almost preventing him from competing. But with the help of his reluctant coach, Bronson Peary (played by Hugh Jackman), a former Olympic ski jumper now driving a snowplow in Garmisch, Edwards prevails.

There are moments in the film that made me question what the true end game is with Eddie and his dream of competing. Is the film

about him taking to the slopes to become an amusing media sensation for a brief 15 minutes of fame, or is it about Eddie showing that rare, do-or-die spirit that only a handful of athletes have shown in the history of the Olympics?

In the end, Edwards, who became a laughingstock in the process, surprised Olympics officials and attendees alike by showing what he is truly made of.

In this day and age of remakes, Eddie the Eagle is a refreshing change of pace. Many are familiar with the story, and thanks to YouTube and Wikipedia, you can get the breakdown of Edwards’ history. But with Dexter Fletcher’s directing, Egerton’s acting style, and

a terrific soundtrack, the viewer is taken on a powerful journey - feeling every rejection Eddie feels and the impact of every time he crashes. This movie leaves you cheering on Eddie from beginning to end. ***½ NME - Teresa Ewers

T

he voice alone entitles him to its own Wikipedia and IMDB page, but there is more to Kevin Grevioux than a voice. One of the masterminds behind the popular Underworld franchise, Grevioux is a genius at knowing what his audience wants, and he continues to give it to them. I had the opportunity to meet Kevin during the Albuquerque Comic Con in January. If his resume didn’t impress me enough, the photo op he gave us holding a copy of our magazine impressed me more.

After graduating from Howard University with a degree in microbiology, Grevioux began work towards a Master’s degree in genetic engineering. During his first year of graduate school, Grevioux chose to take screenwriting and cinematography classes. That seemingly small decision had a major impact on Grevioux’s life path, moving him away from science and towards writing and acting in the City of Angels. But since Grevioux was currently in a field that was basically guaranteed to keep him in paid work, that shift was somewhat of a risk. It was all due to Spike Lee. “I was working in a laboratory and the National Cancer Institute at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, when Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It came out. I immediately knew what I wanted to do with my life, but I was already on that path of being a professional scientist. It was rewarding even though it was an entry level lab position, but I was simultaneously taking genetic engineering courses in grad school as well. Having to work full-time and go to school fulltime was doable, but it ceased to be

fun anymore. So, while I was in grad school, I also took my first few film courses in screenwriting and cinematography. Film won out, and here I am.” He said the decision was a simple one. “The impetus came from my having always been creative as a kid. Then loving both comic books and horror movies. You know what they say, ‘Do something you love and you never have to work a day in your life.’”

Grevioux’s distinctively deep voice lends a unique and intriguing flavor to his on-screen characters.

When asked where it came from, Grevioux simply answered, “Puberty.” That voice can be heard in such films as Men in Black II, where Grevioux plays Pineal Eye; I, Frankenstein (for which he wrote the original screenplay) as the character Dekar; and The Batman, as Solomon Grundy.

But it was an idea of his and director Len Wiseman that led to one of Grevioux’s most memorable characters, Raze, a lycan (or second-breed, humanistic werewolf) in the film series, Underworld.

Grevioux shared where the concept of Underworld came from. “Lots of different places. I had done some interracial dating and would notice the stares we would get. That was one thing. And then there was my love for the old ‘monster mash’ films like The House of Dracula or Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Writing Underworld was just a natural outgrowth of what I was familiar with.”

The success of Underworld was no surprise to Kevin. “I knew people would dig it because I was an old genre guy. Not even the director

liked the idea at first.” Underworld has now become a $458 million dollar franchise worldwide, spanning a comic book series and possibly a cartoon adaptation.

Grevioux has seen success as both an actor and a writer, but when it comes to a challenge, Kevin shared what will always be a monster for him. “I would say writing. I mean, they both can have their own unique and particular challenges, but I’m a character actor. People want me because of my voice and physicality, so there’s no surprise there. With writing, I’m digging deep within myself to tap stores and reservoirs of knowledge and experiences to come up with unique and exciting narratives.” When it comes to inspiration, Grevioux has many sources from which to draw. “Life itself. My love for comics and science. God and my family. Anything empirical or experiential becomes fair game to me.”

The success of Underworld led to Grevioux’s creation of DarkStorm Studios, extending his action comics to a bigger audience. Grevioux talked to us about how those studios developed. “Darkstorm is a comic com-

pany I created a few years ago to be a holding tank for the myriad of ideas I have and the need to get them out there. It can take forever for a script to become a movie or a TV show, and comics allows me to get it to the public quicker.” While waiting for those ideas to come to fruition, Grevioux has played some of the most memorable characters in film. Kevin will have new character to add to his resume, but the project is hush-hush, says Grevioux. “Nothing that I can speak about right now.”

With a career that includes voice work, writing, acting and producer credit under his belt, I wondered what the future holds for Grevioux and what he would like his legacy to be. Again, his answer was a simple one, “That I did good and interesting work with creative integrity.”

A man whose personality and presence towers over the characters that he plays on screen, Kevin Grevioux shows no signs of slowing down.

We await the new creatures, villains, heroes and heroines he’ll present on screen and page. But until then, we’ll relish in his current works...and that voice. NME - Teresa Ewers

BEHIND THE SCENES: FILM FOUNDATION’S PLANS FOR 2016

T

he New Mexico Film Foundation (www.nmfilmfoundation. org) has big plans for 2016 here in New Mexico. With workshops, grants, and special events planned throughout the year, the Foundation hopes to keep growing and giving back to the film community. Raising awareness outside of the film community is also a big goal for 2016.

Independent to Union, Actors to PAs, the Film Foundation is striving to offer something for everyone.

Some of the events that are on the calendar so far for this year are: March 5: Using Emerging Media to Promote Your Film - Carolyn Miller March 26: New Mexico Actors’ Showcase- Featuring acting talent in New Mexico.

Oct 13-16: For the On the Page Screenwriting Conference, visit www.onthepage.us. The site will be operational soon with a list of workshops and lectures for aspiring screenwriters.

The Foundation is currently looking for donors and funders for the following grants: The George R. R. Martin Science Fiction/Fantasy Screenwriting Grant, the Lockheed Martin Film Grant, and the Beau McNicholas Post-Production Grant.

FOLLOW-UP:DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE

A

dark room with floating pieces of Jareth’s castle, the Labyrinth baby holding a bubble, glitter on the floor, and a bubble machine made Friday night’s tribute to David Bowie unusual and a little magical.

Multiple screens showed the making of Labyrinth, as well as the movie itself. Behind the scenes of the movie flashed by, showing David Bowie smiling as he practiced dancing with Jennifer Connelly just as the first band of the night took the high stage at The Library.

The tribute was a brilliant and wonderful idea. Many I spoke to were happy to be there to pay their respects to the man in their own way, and to donate to a great cause, the UNM Cancer Center.

The bands that played were also thrilled to have the honor of playing David Bowie covers. Albuquerque Underground Zine brought in multiple bands. My favorite was Kyle Martin, who is normally a 20 I

Western-rock player. His rendition of Fame nearly brought the house down!

However, the switch between each band took so long, the lull left some people barhopping, then coming back later. For example, it took more than ten minutes for Kyle Martin’s band to set-up and warmup, and they only played one song.

Then it was on to wait for the next band to set-up. He would have liked to play more songs, but all the good ones were chosen already. “I told them I’d only play if I was able to play Fame. They said yes, and all the other great songs had already been claimed.”

I’d say if they ever produce another tribute, keep the awesome room design ideas but limit the number of band changes or have two stages, and perhaps have a back-up PA system. But all-in-all a pretty good idea for a Friday night on the town. NME -Sonja Dewing

his little joint has been in business for two years now. That’s the point that most restaurants are either out of business or established and set to make it. The Shop looks like it will make it.

It’s not fancy. It’s only open for breakfast and lunch. Most days, though, there’s a full house of customers enjoying the simple menu that is done with meticulous care.

The Shop is the kind of operation that just may be the savior of the Albuquerque food scene: Funky and unpretentious, but with a skatepunk DIY ethic that puts quality of food over ambiance.

The walls are covered with local art (for sale) and the industrial floors hint at the theme, or lack thereof. The menu is straightforward: breakfast and lunch. However, the individual dishes are made with attention to detail, local ingredients wherever possible and plated 22 I

in a style to be expected of far more expensive restaurants.

The biscuits and chorizo gravy are filling and satisfying with just enough spice to put a smile on a New Mexican face, as are the Green Chile Eggs Benedict. There is a nice list of sandwiches ranging from the Cubano (with house-made pickles) to the Duck Confit. The confit (coneFEE) is duck poached for hours in its own fat. Rich and unctuous, it pairs perfectly with the acidic dressing.

The downside? Service can be slow, especially during peak hours.

The Shop’s obviously tight margin means that often some of the dishes are unavailable. Get there early for a shot at the Duck Confit. All in all, this place has what it takes to win regular customers and show Albuquerque that it doesn’t take millions to create a place in New Mexico’s culinary landscape. NME - Steve Fye

lbuquerque experienced a luck of the Irish on February 20th when Tullamore D.E.W. Brand Ambassador and Irish pub historian, Tim Herlihy, visited Two Fools Tavern to have a little whiskey and share some knowledge on the popular drink. As far as whiskey experts go, they don’t come more Irish True than Herlihy. A former egg farmer, Herlihy began his whiskey career with the Cooley Distillery. He has since traveled across the country educating others*. Herlihy shared where is passion for the popular drink came from. “I’ve always been a whiskey fan, and it took a long time to realize not only can you be a whiskey drinker but that you could also work in the Whiskey business too. When I began a role with the Irish Food Board (Bord Bia), I started working with the Cooley Distillery and that opened my mind to the World of Whiskey as a career as well as learning about the craft of Whiskey distillation and maturation” As Tullamore D.E.W. Ambassador, Tim has presented on Irish whiskey history, cocktails, and one of his favorite topics, the Irish pub. When asked what his favorite drink was, he was quick to answer. “Tullamore DEW neat or on the rocks, and I’m also partial to a good Whiskey Sour, before whiskey, I worked with my Dad at our family egg farm where we have 80,000 hens. For me an egg white whiskey sour combines my love of Tullamore DEW Irish

Whiskey and also our family egg farm, plus it’s an excellent cocktail” Tim is a true expert in the history of Irish whiskey. Crowned Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky: Best Irish Whiskey Ambassador, he now has the belt to prove it. Educated in the ins and outs of whiskey, Herlihy shared what is the worse affront that could be done to a whiskey drink is: “...Having it alone.

Irish Whiskey is meant to be shared and enjoyed with friends, it’s best enjoyed with a toast: Here’s to Cheating, Stealing, Fighting and Drinking. If you cheat, may you cheat death. If you steal, may you steal a heart, If you fight, may you fight for one another. And if you drink, may you drink with me. Cheers!”

Herlihy’s favorite is an Irish Pub. He explained why this favorite stop among whiskey fans is taking over the world.

“An Irish Pub, like Irish Whiskey and Irish people is simply friendly. There’s no occasion for the Irish Pub, it’s every occasion, it’s a warm and welcoming, place. There’s nothing pretentious about the Irish Pub, it’s a place to see your favorite bartender, have a chat with friends and raise a toast. It’s Irish hospitality at its finest.”
