appy Month of Haunts! I would be the first to say that the month of spirits, spookiness, and scares is not a big fan of mine. I experienced a haunted house with my kids and needless to say, it did not turn out well.

But even though I’m not a fan of being scared out of my wits, October offers plenty of events for the hardcore fans and the simple at heart. This month’s issue we talk with Cassandra Peterson who created The Mistress of the Dark, Elvira. We had the opportunity to discuss how Elvira came to life, the misconception of being a larger than life character and the end of a 21-year show that has been a staple in the L.A. scene.

We also spoke with the creator of Indigenous Comic-Con, Lee Francis, on developing a comic convention that focuses on the Native American community, celebrities, and artists, while celebrating its third year in the comic and popular culture arena.

Duke City Opera sat down with Bradd Howard to talk about the camaraderie of the band, their musical influences, and upcoming performances.

He also had the opportunity to speak with the legendary artist Henry Rollins about his new tour, a travel slideshow coming to the Kimo Theater on October 12th.

Rollins discusses his transition from music to spoken word, the different countries he’s visited, and how the U.S. is seen in their eyes. Finally, we sat down with Charles Esten, the star of ABC’s Nashville to discuss career, music, and family.

n a world of back to back comic conventions, there is the search for one that stands out in a completely different way. Celebrating their 3rd year, Indigenous Comic Con provides fans with their comic, sci-fi and popular culture fix, while honoring the Native American culture at the same time. The event returns to Isleta Resort and Casino on November 2nd4th, 2018 with Meow Wolf as their Executive Sponsor for the second year in a row. Lee Francis, Director of Indigenous Comic-Com, is excited to bring what he feels was a much needed event back to New Mexico. “I founded the Indigenous Comic-Con in 2016 as a way to bring together Native and Indigenous folks from multiple pop culture fields. What I had noticed for many years was how we were all 8I

siloed in our respective fields and conventions. There are so much crossover and interconnections, it was just a way to create a space where we could connect and celebrate our identities as Indigenerds.” ICC will continue to bring new events, guests and vendors and they are excited to introduce a brand new exhibit, Electric Chaco, a new interactive story exhibit that reimagines Chaco Canyon in an alternative future and celebrates the spirit of this amazing landmark as a gathering place for Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas.

Francis explained how the exhibit came to fruition. I’ve been kicking around with Indigenous Futurisms for a while and I began to think how it might play out for Pueblo folks and Natives here in the Southwest. I tried

“Over two-hundred sponsorships, last year and we are on track for that this year as well. Essentially, it gives folks who may not be able to travel out here to New Mexico, a chance to be a part of the Convention and give back to Native kiddos at the same time. New Mexico’s Own Dust City Opera

T

I (Paul) volunteered a band, that didn’t exist yet, to open a friend’s CD release show. I had been trying get a band going for some time and I had enough experience and connections to try it again. I had played with Travis in a jazz big band, I knew Greg from our time in Wildewood together, and Danny was in the short-lived Paul Hunton Band some years ago. I was stressing about finding the right guitar player and somehow it occurred to me to 10 I

ask the bass player from Le Chat Lunatique to play guitar and it worked out beautifully. Then I stumbled on the profile of Clara, who played both clarinet and accordion, and hoped that she would be cool. The rest is history!

As for the name, Dust City Opera was the last incarnation of a band that started out as the Rough Ridge Raiders around 2009 or so. I liked the name and felt like it hadn’t had the chance to live up to its potential so I brought it back to life!

Describe to us Dust City Opera’s sound? Who are your musical inspirations?

At its core, Dust City Opera is folkrock with horns. Sometimes dark and cheeky, it takes influence from some of my favorite artists, including Tom Waits, the Felice Brothers and the Handsome Family.

What can we expect to see from the band in the near future?

We’re a new band, we’ve just reached our 6-month mark so we have a lot in front of us. We’re hoping to put out our first studio album in early 2019 and we’re continuing to get our name out there by playing the local venue circuit to build our fanbase. We have had the pleasure of playing regularly at Canteen Brewhouse, The Mine Shaft Tavern, Marble Brewery, Tractor Brewing – the whole brewery scene has been very supportive of our music.

We’re also working on publishing some videos online to extend our reach outside of the local scene.

hat can you possibly ask the woman who has created a cult icon?

That was the question around our office as we discussed our upcoming interview with the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira, who will be making an appearance at this year’s Santa Fe Comic Con on October 1921st at Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino. But under the costume lies the woman behind the mascara and big hair, Cassandra Peterson. Peterson has been sporting the black wig and tight-fitting black dress for over three decades and it has truly become her second skin. Her journey to one of the most beloved characters started as a child. Peterson was always drawn to the horror genre, playing with horror-themed toys and shows while other girls played with their Barbies.

“I was drawn to it and repelled to it all at the same time, I mean it scared the hell out of me,” shared Peterson.

“Particularly Vincent Price who I had seen in House on Haunted Hill...I had nightmares about him and everything, but I couldn’t wait to see his next movie.” Peterson also believes that a childhood accident was the possible draw into the genre as well. “As a very young child I was burned and had a lot of scars on my neck and shoulders and I was called a monster and kids would point and run away from me, and something drew me to the horror genre because I thought I’m one of them, a monster.”

Despite the setback, Peterson knew she was destined for greatness, even at a young age. “I knew I always wanted to be in show business,” shared Peterson. The journey had her becoming the youngest showgirl in Vegas, meeting Elvis, appearing in a Bond film, performing as the lead singer in two Italian rock bands and working with Federico Fellini all before the age of 21. But it would be a contest that would change her 13 I

life forever. After the death of Larry Vincent, aka Sinister Seymour, who hosted a popular weekend horror show called Fright Night, producers of the show decided to keep the show running with a female host. After their first plan didn’t come to fruition, they sent out a casting call. Peterson jumped at the opportunity and won the role. Now, came the job of creating a character. “After I got the job I had to come up with a look,” remembers Peterson. “That basically involved me calling my best friend at the time, a guy named Robert Redding was an artist and just incredibly creative. He was an artist, performer, super creative guy and we started going what we felt the character should look like.” The duo looked to Sharon Tate for inspiration in The Fearless Vampire Killers, but the look was immediately shut down, requesting that the character needs to wear black. Back to the drawing board, Peterson and Redding then drew from a famous character. “We basically came up with something that looked like Morticia Addams, Vampira, you know...just a female vampire was what we were going for with a little hipper 80’s twist. The hair...the 60’s hairdo, because Robert’s favorite singer in the world was Ronnie Spector in the Ronettes and that was her hairdo, so he decided that was the hairdo I should have.”

Before they knew it, they had a home run. Elvira was introduced to the world and there was no looking back. Peterson realized she had a real hit on her hands. “Right about the beginning of October in 1981, first thing - I was listed in the phone book - back then everyone was in the phone book,” laughed Peterson. “I started getting calls morning, noon and night.

The phone was ringing off the hook asking me to make an appearance at someone’s restaurant...beauty salon or someone’s groceries for Halloween.”

had to change her number in the process. “It was ridiculous how many calls I was getting, and not long after that, I was asked to be on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. That was a big deal back then. That was the only last-night talk show at the time on television...and when you’re on Johnny Carson’s show you know you kind of made it to the big time. So, getting offered to go on that show... that’s possibly the moment I go, ‘Whoa, I’m on to something here.’”

The public was getting to know and love Elvira, but quite often the public forgot that a real person laid under the costume, sometimes creating misconceptions when other projects came into play. “After I got the role of Elvira, I still went out on

calls for other acting jobs. The casting directors in town honestly thought I looked like that, so they call me in on a part that they were expecting this tall, Amazon with black hair to come in and in comes this kind of tiny, petite red-headed. They were not prepared for that. So that was one of the things people really couldn’t distinguish - my real self and Elvira. They didn’t know that I was only playing a character on t.v.” But as time went on the world accepted both Elvira the character and Cassandra Peterson, the actor. “As time has gone on it’s got better, going out more like myself - showing up for television shots, commercials or conventions as myself.” That has lead to another issue - anonymity. “It has a good side and bad side,” said Peterson.

“I use to be completely anonymous. I could just go around, in Hollywood, doing whatever I had to do without ever being recognized and that is definitely not possible anymore. It was great for me when I was raising my daughter because we could go anywhere and no one would recognize me. Then she won’t have to put up with all the things that celebrities kids had to put up with. We were pretty free to be normal people back then.

Now, for me, people recognize me a lot more these days as myself.”

Peterson is also letting go of some things. She has announced that she will be stepping down after 21 years from her show, Knotts Scary Farm, at Knotts Berry Farm. A decision that Peterson feels is happening on a high note. “I love doing the show. I 15 I

stopped because of two things. One is I was always in L.A. for Halloween and the rest of the country might have thought I disappeared during Halloween and number two, it is just incredibly difficult to do.” Peterson would perform two nights a week from August to November. “It takes every ounce of energy and strength I have because it’s a pretty energetic show...it’s a pretty big production and it kicks my butt. I need a break from this!” The choice to move on from Knotts has opened Cassandra up to other projects, even completing ones that have been in the pipeline. “I have several things I’m pitching right now.

I’m pitching an animated series and, people will be happy to hear this, it’s the first time I said it, I’m pitching a live action show television show. I’m

pitching a series hosting horror movies again on a cable network and my autobiography, I’m still working on that - I have got to finish that thing!”

Peterson hopes that the cutting back of the show at Knotts will lead to follow-through on her upcoming projects.

Cassandra Peterson is heading into another decade of being the host with the most. When discussing her legacy, Peterson knows it will be a good one. “People would come up and say that you’ve gotten me through one of the hardest times of my life or you helped when I was a young kid and I was being bullying. Somehow the character, Elvira, gave them some incentive to be strong and courageous. That would definitely be my legacy and it truly makes it worthwhile with this crazy career that I’ve had.” Peterson is excited to see what the future will hold and will continue to have the Mistress embrace her and her career. Henry Rollins Travel Slideshow Tour

es, Henry Rollins is in our art section. The frontman of State of Alert, Black Flag, and the Rollins Band has become an avid traveler over the years, taking photos every step of the way. Rollins is currently on tour providing fans with an intimate evening of photos and stories of his favorite stomps through including the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, South America, and Antarctica. He is making a stop right here in Albuquerque at The Kimo Theater on October 12th. As he states on his website, “For many years, I have documented my travels all over the world with a camera.

Never easy, but always worth it. The photos have stories behind them. I have selected several images, to show and talk about.” New Mexico Entertainment’s Bradd Howard had the opportunity to ask Rollins a few questions of his transition from music to spoken word, how he chooses his travel locations, and how America’s political environment has impacted his travels.

What was the transition from punk to spoken word like? What inspired it or did you feel that it evolved somewhat naturally?

1983. I read something I had written and told a quick story and that was it. People came up to me afterward and said how much they liked what I had said. The promoter guy asked me if I wanted to do some more shows, opening for poets he managed. I said yes. I did a few of those and then the poets were opening for me, which I think a few of them didn’t appreciate.

Of all the things I’ve ever done, it’s being alone on stage which feels the most natural. There’s no one I ever saw that I tried to be like, I just went up there and talked. I have seen a lot of people who stand alone on a stage and talk, storytellers, comedians, etc. and many of them are great but it never occured to me that I want to be like them.

In your stories you talk about experiences all over the world, how do you choose specific locations?

Mainly, the history of a place. If there was a war there or if the place was invaded, like Central Asia, parts of which were flattened in the 13th century by the Mongols. Anywhere the Soviets tried to beat into submission.

Almost anywhere is interesting to me.

What I’m not looking for is a leisure trip. I don’t want to sit on a beach or the hotel pool. I want to learn something.

To what scale have you noticed the impact of America’s current political climate in your global travels? Has that been an influence on your current tour?

Since the Trump administration has been in effect, I’ve been to Australia a couple of times, Peru, the Philippines, Taiwan, Germany, Holland, England, Belgium, and Canada. So far, I haven’t been threatened or challenged on anything. I’ll be back in Europe later this year as well as Ukraine and Russia, so maybe there will be some pushback. Usually, it’s just media people who get in my face about a president and when they do, it’s always a Republican. Reagan was the worst for that kind of thing. A lot of snark and anger. I got it but it’s not like I was hanging out with the guy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I got some grief from someone at some point. I’m not all that worried about those who don’t like Trump being angry about me being an American. have said it before, Arcadia is to be commended for all kinds of books on local people, places, events, colleges, aviation, high schools, and traditions. Arcadia is now aligned with History Press so if you can’t find it, it wasn’t written – yet. Two new Arcadia books feature very different places in New Mexico – Gallup and Galisteo/Cerrillos. They specialize in historic photos, interviews, and identifying the lost. The Gallup book focuses on the people who made Gallup from the beginning and the people alive now, who keep the traditions going. The Galisteo/Cerrillos book begins with the turquoise and gold mines that really began the settlements. Gallup had coal and lumber to grow on. Galisteo was founded in 1617 while Cerrillos was a new railroad stop in 1880. The first settlers came to Gallup in 1539. Both books talk about the influence of Native Americans.

There is a fascination to find out what came before the modern cities. If you are going to either place, get the book first to read up on the history and people.

Nashville’s Charles “Chip” Esten

I

t’s funny the interviews that will make you giddy. My assistant got the notification that Charles “Chip” Esten was coming to Albuquerque to perform at Isleta Casino and Resort on September 30th and knew how much I loved him on Nashville. So, after setting up interviews to make my staff happy, the tables have turned.

Esten received recognition playing the character, Deacon Claybourne, for six seasons on the music drama show, but there is more to Chip besides his guitar playing and excellent voice.

So we had the opportunity to discuss his upcoming performance, his time on Whose Line is it Anyway, the final season of Nashville and his love for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Esten’s time in high school led him to football, where he played at T.C. Williams High School, home of the Titans (yes, the ones from the movie Remember the Titans), and college led to him performing on the stage. But 22 I

music was always his go-to. “Music was the first love. I grew up playing guitar, well, trying to learn guitar. I was just writing songs and learning to play what I heard on the radio.

That’s from way back when I was younger,” shared Esten. “In college, I was actually in a band and I stayed an extra year, because...when I am I ever gonna get a chance to do this.” After a year Esten’s friends graduated and moved on to living the professional life as doctors and lawyers while Esten still was trying to figure out where his life might lead. Soon he turned to some close friends that led him down a different path. “I knew a couple of people in Los Angeles who were acting and I always wanted to do that in some fashion or another,” said Esten. “So, I figured I could go out to Los Angeles and be an actor.” That journey would always find him working with other musicians giving him the ability to work on his music, but would never

last. Those moments came in useful in terms of his career. “Along the way, I used my music a couple of times.

One of them was playing Buddy Holly in a musical production in London on the West End. I got on “Whose Line is it Anyway.” I used a little bit of the singing and songwriting. You have to improv a song off the top of your head.

But music took a back seat for Esten.

Soon he focused on country music. “I ended up writing with a friend from Nashville. Once or twice I was meant to even come here [Nashville] and perform at The Bluebird with them.

But twice I had to cancel because I kept getting acting work. It seemed that the acting was getting in the way of the music. I remember asking my wife, ‘When I am ever gonna get to Nashville?’”

Unbeknownst to Esten, his question would be answered. His acting and music would collide and the script for the television show Nashville fell in his lap. The role of Deacon would change his life. “Deacon opened all these doors. I just recently played my 104th Grand Ole Opry appearance.

I really couldn’t ask for more...the acting would bring me back around to the music.” Esten’s role of Deacon, the talented musician with a struggling alcoholic past, would keep him busy for six years. The music created for the show was fitting of the country history that many fans have come to know and love. Inspired by the country of before, Esten shared how Callie Khouri and T-Bone Burnett worked to have the music of Nashville be a character on its own. “Between the two of them, we had the authentic heart and soul of Nashville very much taken care of. But, I know for a fact that T-Bone, in his shepherding of the music, was not looking at that point to imitate country radio. He was, in some way, for all purposes, even trying to beat it a little bit. He knew with some of these scenes you didn’t want to start suddenly singing some pop radio song. It might be a great song, but it wouldn’t be as emotionally resonate, or as stirring as the deeper stuff he was trying to reach for.” Esten said goodbye to his character earlier this year when the show ended in its sixth

season. The show has truly opened the flood gates when it comes to new projects for Esten. He is currently working on a new TNT show called Tell Me Your Secrets and Esten is excited about the direction the show is taking. “I was interested in what the project was and the people that were starring in it. There’s a lot of quality [in the script] and the tone is...different.

It’s darker than what I’m used to. I was really excited about that.”

Esten’s passions are vast and include an organization near and dear to his heart. Esten’s daughter, Abby, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 2 and a half. After a procedure, the family realized that Abby wasn’t recovering well. She was pale, no color on her lips and these little freckles. Discussing the situation with their pediatrician, the family headed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital and after a series of tests was diagnosed with leukemia. “It was very earthshaking if you can imagine. It was very difficult. A very dark day. A day that you feel very much alone and powerless.” But the doctor laid out the “path to healing” for Esten and

the results paid off. “[Abby] is now 18 years old. She is a freshman in college, where she is playing Division I soccer.

She is strong, healthy, and we are blessed. Our prayers were answered through people who did the research and people who have helped raise money to pay for that research.” It was then that Esten knew how he and his family could give back. “All the blessings we’ve been given through Abby...we want another to have the same chances, that’s why I am the honorable national spokesperson.

My wife is on the board here in the Nashville for the Light the Night campaign. I’m happy to be a part of it and I would just recommend that anybody who has a heart, even if it doesn’t affect you directly...you never know the ripple effects when you do something like this.”

Following your dreams is never taken in a straight line. Esten’s driven and determination led him to a dream role, creating his music, and staying connected to his family. We, his fans, are lucky for it. NME - Teresa Ewers
