lbuquerque Little Theatre will begin their 88th Season with the Pulitzer Prize Winning play, Driving Miss Daisy. It tells the story of an elderly Jewish matron, Daisy Werthan, and her chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn. At first, Daisy is none too happy about being forced to rely on a black man to get from one place to the next. Gradually, however, Hoke wins her over, and during the 25-year span of the play, the two develop a deep-rooted affection. This masterpiece is a delicate depiction of racial tensions, the passage of time, and the experience of aging. Playwright Alfred Uhry creates

Driving Miss Daisy will be performed by Alaina Warren Zachary as Daisy Werthan, Marc Lynch as Hoke Coleburn, and Nicholas Urzetta as Boolie Werthan and will be directed by Paula Stein. TURN IT UP: 3 ON A MATCH

How did the band come together? Since 2005, our bassist David DeBonis had this vision playing in a Kabarett [a political, satirical form of Cabaret] style band, something that would re-capture the moods, the feel, the desperation and presence of European Kabarett before WWI, before WWII, and during the Great Depression between the world wars…something that conveyed the effect of those events on the psyche and emotions of the citizens of Europe and America. In those times, there persisted a hedonism in the face of social, economic, and political collapse. David, along with our pianist Brad Clement, had been playing together in a band in Albuquerque, mixing and matching music from different eras, including Cole Porter, Kurt Weil, George Gershwin, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Zappa, and Devo. This band, called the Goldsteins, fronted by Mark Andrews of the Strawberry Zots, attempted to find common threads among these songs from different eras. (Note: Goldstein was the co-arch-antagonist to Big Brother in George Orwell’s 1984…a trope the band wanted to utilize in its attempt to show parallels between socio-political musics of the early

and the late 20th century.) While the old songs in that band appealed to David, the newer songs did not, so he left the Goldsteins while its remaining members went off to play 1980s electronic New Wave dance music…with sequenced bass parts. Within a few months, David met Tina Panaro, a vocalist and neighbor in Corrales, and the two began formulating a Kabarett project. Tina was originally from New York City,

“...we have some very interesting dedicated repeat customers. What we are doing is unique.” where she fronted the New Wave band Reverse, which was a CBGB’s fixture. Tina, her husband, and children had moved to New Mexico after the attack on the World Trade Center. Here in Albuquerque, she began singing with a Cabaret group called UpStaged. Although she has since left UpStaged, Tina still was interested in performing cabaret music. This interest found its match

with David. Tina and David then conscripted Brad, (who was still playing New Wave music on synthesizers). After nearly 10 months of rehearsals and much uncertainty whether this Kabarett Trio would even work, the three all met at Hancock Fabrics going-out-of-business sale and bought $300 worth of velvet for stage curtains. After local seamstress genius Susan Palmer sewed up the velvet and it was hung on a framework of electrical conduit and recycled crutches, we knew we were committed as an act. Who are your influences in music? Just as performance of classical music for centuries has preserved that music, we are interested in keeping alive the songs of the Kabarett. In this respect, our influences would be composers like Eric Satie, who some would say is the father of Kabarett music, Kurt Weil, Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Hollaender, Rudolph Nelson, and performers like Marlene Dietrich and Lotte Lenya, etc. How would you describe your sound? We try to remain true to the original arrangements of Kabarett songs, adapted to the trio of bass, piano, and vocals. The songs range from rousing

beer hall songs, to dirges and ballads, as well as satirical pieces. In addition to the sound, however, we are very visual. We have many stage props, lots of antiques, period attire, bits of old movie clips we project on screens, and we do occasional shadow theater performances. Has the band seen a following in New Mexico? Nothing huge, but we have some very interesting dedicated repeat customers. What we are doing is unique. What is your take on the music scene in New Mexico? Our show is outside any music scene here. It is more a conglomeration of music, stage performance, and a vintage atmosphere, which spans across genres What are some of your upcoming gigs? At the end of August, we perform at the Press Club. Our performance at Casa Rondeña will be announced soon. Kelly Jo Designs on the Patio in Los Ranchos is expected in early October, and Friday, January 12, 2018, there will be a CAC SALON performance at Las Ristras Restaurant in Corrales. THE SPORTS CONNECTION: ALBUQUERQUE SOL

T

he sport of soccer became an Albuquerque pastime when the Albuquerque Sol came to town. Ron Patel, founder of Albuquerque Sol, sat down with New Mexico Entertainment and talked to us about his passion to make the Sol the talk of the town in sports. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT ALBUQUERQUE AND SOCCER THAT RESONATED WITH YOU? Living here for many years, I realized that we are a soccer town. Outside of the University [of New Mexico], which has a first class soccer program, there are no other pro or semi-pro teams. I saw the Sol as a way to unite the community through sports. Basically, I saw a gap in the marketplace and aimed to fill the gap. WHERE DID YOUR LOVE FOR THE GAME COME FROM? I was born in Liverpool, England, and, according to my dad, [I’ve] been kicking the ball since I could walk. In England, soccer’s birthplace, it is by far the most popular sport. I grew up

12 I

as a Liverpool F.C. [Football Club] fan, but we also had a local team called Chester City. Right now, there are many New Mexicans who have favorite teams in MLS [Major League Soccer] (USA), Liga MX (Mexico), and the Premier League (England), but they’ve never had a local team to connect to. We exist to unite and elevate New Mexico through the world’s beautiful game. HAS IT BEEN A CHALLENGE IN ALBUQUERQUE FINDING AN AUDIENCE WHO EMBRACES THE LOVE OF THE SPORT? It has not been hard to find soccer fans in New Mexico. What was difficult was learning the nuances of running a minor league sports team in this market. I’ve been an entrepreneur for 11 years and have experience in running businesses, especially in this market. However, it is not easy to learn how to run a sports franchise. If it wasn’t for the exceptional people that make up our organization, we wouldn’t be here today. From the intern staff to gameday staff and coaches, it’s a huge consolidated

staff to run a sports business. Then, you have to find the right product on the field, the players!

them. They have had the better of us for most of the rivalry, something we look to change in the coming years.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS GAME THAT MAKES IT EXCITING TO WATCH? The great thing about soccer is that there is always something going on. You don’t have to wait for the next commercial break—there is continuous action. What makes the game beautiful is that whilst the goal is the high point of the action, it’s the lead up to the goal which is really quite beautiful. To see a team move the ball as a unit, not as individuals, and then to cap that with a strike to the back of the net—it’s a beautiful site.

THE SEASON IS WINDING DOWN SOON. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE OUR READERS TO KNOW ABOUT NEXT SEASON? We are just getting started! We’ve had a plan from day one to grow the business into a full professional soccer franchise. We are doing everything we can to try to grow into a pro franchise and build a downtown soccer stadium that will be a crown jewel of our city. We love this place and we are here to stay! NME - Teresa Ewers

WHO IS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING OPPONENT? I presume you are asking which opponent is the toughest? Definitely FC [Football Club]Tucson. They have been our rival since we started. We play them multiple times each year, and it’s always a battle. They have a great organization from top to bottom, and I love competing against Kareem with some young fans. ®Provided by Albuquerque Sol.

ore than just pretty face and killer abs, JR [James Roch] Lemon is proving to have some serious acting chops. Currently playing the character Nurse Kenny on NBC’s hit show The Night Shift, Lemon is enjoying his decision to make acting his passion. But this decision didn’t come naturally. During filming of Night Shift’s Season 4, Lemon took some time out to do a photoshoot, answer questions about how he got started in the business, and share his goals for the future. You received a BS in Management Science and Engineering, yet you choose to pursue a career in acting. Where did the desire to act come from? I was signed as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders right out college, but I got cut during camp later that year. I originally came to Southern California to train and stay in shape. While training, I met a few guys who were doing sports commercials and making great money. Once I decided that I liked it, I put myself in local acting classes. I realized about 5 months into acting class that this was what I wanted to be my job.

“Coming up, Kenny has some of the biggest relationship news that one can have. I’ll let you do the math!” 14 I

Your first gig - what was the experience like? Night Shift was the first theatrical set I had ever stepped foot on. And yes, I was terrified. I remember that in my first scene, all I had to do was deliver one line and and try to be funny. I realize now the impossibility of that task. Shadow Love was an interesting series. How did you get involved and what was it about Amir that found you connected you to the character? A good friend of mine approached me about being in his web series. I honestly thought that he was creating a platform for himself. On day 2 I realized the entire thing was about my character. I really like the heart of Amir. You have experienced both big and small screen—which one would you say was a greater challenge? They both present different challenges. TV can move so fast that sometimes it can be tough to get a grip on what is going on. But the cool part of TV is that you could spend years working on the same character. Each year you get a chance to improve on what you were maybe doing before. Ultimately, it’s all just storytelling, though. I got to experience what it’s like on the set of The Night Shift—you guys have a lot of fun producing that show. Do you remember when you got the call to play the role of Kenny? I remember it very well. I had originally auditioned for the role of Paul. Robert [Bailey Jr.] and I did the network and studio tests together, and I had heard about him

getting the role. I was walking down Abbott Kinney in Venice Beach, and I remembered getting the call from my managers that they wanted to book me for another role they had me read for the next day. It was this nurse role, Kenny, and he was described as a dryhumored Asian-American male…the rest is history. What is it about Kenny’s character that resonates with you? I’m very much so drawn to Kenny’s deep need for family. It’s why he’s everybody’s best friend, why he’s like the bartender of the ER, why he’s always hopelessly looking for love. This season we seem to see a little bit of an insecurity with Kenny as he watches a new nurse, now a doctor, Cain (played by Mark Consuelos) come into the picture. What direction will Kenny be taking for the rest of the season? Up until ep 6 or 7 we see Kenny Up until episode 6 or 7, we see Kenny increasingly going downhill. He’s testing the family that he’s always been there for. Seeing if they’re willing to put up with his stuff. With Cain, Kenny smells something fishy. He knows the underworld of shady people probably better than any other staff member. Not long ago he was beat up by a loan shark that he

couldn’t pay back (black eye in first 2 episodes). So I think Kenny sees something similar going on with Cain. Not all the way on the up-andup. What can we look forward to with Season 5 of The Night Shift? Coming up, Kenny has some of the biggest relationship news that one can have. I’ll let you do the math! What upcoming projects can you share with our readers? Coming out in August is a project I’m really excited about. It’s going to be the first ever story mode in the Madden NFL video game. I play the lead character Devin Wade, and you get to track and play my story, from being a college football washout quarterback to a potential member of an NFL team. It’s going to be awesome. What would you like your legacy to be? I have done my job if we all as people begin to realize that we are a lot more similar than we are different. The issues that we face within our country need to not only be addressed with our intellect, but even more importantly, with our empathy. NOW SHOWING: ALIVE AND KICKING

N

othing gets me more excited than a dance film. Swing legend Dawn Hampton says, “How can you listen to that music and not tap your foot?” Alive and Kicking takes a look inside the history of the high-energy swing community and its resurgence in this modern-era. Swing was created during The Great Depression with the music of Count Bessie, Louie Armstrong, and Duke Ellington used as the backdrop. Performed in the 1920s streets of Harlem in the Black community, Swing and Lindy Hop were dances of the American pastime. Watching the high-speed turns, flips, and kicks make you think that folks might fly across the room if that connection between dancers was lost, but somehow the partners stay connected, continuously in-sync and never missing a beat. Alive and Kicking interviews those who are lovers of the dance and keep it alive around the world. Legendary performers like the late Frankie Manning, the Godfather of Lindy Hop, shared his experience of

performing in such amazing movies like Hellzapoppin and talked about how, when he was ready to retire, the country came a-calling for his expertise. The documentary also includes the Queen of Swing, Norma Miller, who doesn’t mess around when it comes to what she expects when it comes to Swing. The documentary shows that Swing, like dance itself, is universal, finding homes in such countries like Korea, Sweden, England, and the United States. This form of dance has been a release for dancers like Steve and Chanzie, who see it as an escape from their full-time jobs, to Augie, a U.S. Marine, who credits dance for saving his life after coming out of the service. “Everyone’s gone through their dark times. Everyone’s always been in a position they’re really finding a reason to go on,” says Augie, “For me, it was the dance—it was Lindy Hop.” The film includes commentary from Director Susan Glatzer and Director of Photography John W. MacDonald. It also features archival footage, giving the viewer the opportunity to see where the

New Mexico Entertainment • August 2017 I 17

history of swing began. The film also address a visually obvious fact, which is that this dance craze that was created by the Black community in the streets of Harlem seems, more recently, to be limited of African-Americans. “There’s somehow a disconnect happening,” shared Allison of The Harlem Swing Dance Society. “When we talk to the children, ‘Where did this dance start?’ they say Europe, they say almost anything but Harlem.” I love that the movie emphasizes that it’s the responsibility of the Black community to keep Black youth educated on what the

community has created, in this case, swing. Swing is the pursuit of happiness. Watching this documentary, you can’t but smile, groove, sway, and get swept away by these individuals who have found an outlet of expression and relief. It’s a whole other world that you easily get caught up in, and it’s a world that I wouldn’t mind being a part of. NME - Teresa Ewers

BEHIND THE SCENES: MATT PETERSON

What do you love about the film scene in New Mexico? I love the community feel of it—from large scale feature films and television to smaller sized independent films and shorts—there’s a great sense of pride, family, and community. Some of the most successful films and television as of late were created right here in beautiful New Mexico. I believe that’s in large part due to the hardworking, talented local community of film folks! Whenever I’m lucky to get cast on a project or be called to help crew, I always see some wonderful familiar faces. It’s very comforting to see people you may have known for a long time doing things they love to do...and doing them well. We have some of the best and brightest right here in New Mexico! It takes quite a village to create a film, and we have one of the BEST! Where does your passion for acting come from? I’ve been a nut for film since I was

a kid. I remember the first film I ever saw in the theater— well, at least the one that had an effect on me. It was called The Man from Snowy River, a western set in Australia. A young cowboy, new to town, falls for the beautiful daughter of the town’s main ranch owner. Protective father doesn’t dig this at all. Challenges cowboy, cowboy succeeds in challenge, and Father is convinced cowboy is worthy now. Anyways, you get it. Classic story. But there was this one scene! All these cowboys were waiting around the edge of a cliff. They had been chasing some wild horses (Brumbies, as the they called them) for prize money from the main rancher. But this cliff was too steep and dangerous for them to continue.

“For me, it doesn’t compare to anything else I’ve encountered.” So as they sat there waiting to figure out what to do, Jim (young cowboy) rides up and over the cliff! Dramatic music and camera angles ensue as Jim rides down after the Brumbies. He of course gathers all the horses with a few loud cracks of his whip and brings them to the rancher father, collects the prize money and

Matt Peterson New Mexico Entertainment • August 2017 I 19

the daughter, and they live happily ever after...at least until the sequel. (Don’t get me started!) So I guess to answer your question...I really wanted to be JIM the Cowboy! But it wasn’t until I started doing stand up comedy that helped with the confidence to be Jim—I mean perform. But mostly it was because of “JIM the Cowboy” You are also working in comedy. Tell us about the high you get from that. For me, it doesn’t compare to anything else I’ve encountered. Once you get over the stage fright and really start working hard at writing jokes and bits, it sort of becomes addicting. You become comfortable being in front of people. You need to be up there. One of the best things and different things is you get instant gratification of a joke or instant disappointment— either way you’re learning on the spot. It’s the best and pretty damn fun! What are some of your upcoming projects? I’ll be out on the road for some dates with the Why The Long Face Comedy Tour as we are starting to book some late summer runs and into the fall

20 I

and winter. Be on the lookout for those dates. Either on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or our website whythelongfacecomedytour.com. Also, I run two featured shows in here in Albuquerque once a month at the famous Guild Theater in Nob Hill and at Palmer Brewery and Cider House every fourth Friday of the month! As far as film projects of my own, I’ve written two short films I hope to shoot this year and have something else in the works as well! Vague, I know. And of course [I am] auditioning whenever I can for films shot here in NM and beyond! What would you like to see more of here in the Land of Enchantment when it comes to film? I’d like to see the continuing rise of New Mexico film as a whole. We have the world’s attention, so let’s really run with it and show the world what we are made of. We are doing pretty good and helping put out some of the best films and television around. So much hard work from so many folks involved has got us to this point, and the sky is the limit. I can’t wait to see what’s next! NME - Teresa Ewers

BETWEEN THE PAGES: SUMMONING

T

his collection of poems by Jeanne Shannon leaves the reader stunned by her ability to evoke universal emotions of longing, beauty, pain, awe, and pure joy. Her imagery and attention to detail blended with her obvious love of the natural world takes us on a visual journey where less is more and where words become a vehicle through which she allows us access into her very soul. Jeanne’s worldview has a visionary aspect that is timeless. The book is divided into six sections: “Dissolving Forms,” “The Colors of the World,” “Honey Locust,” “Summoning,” “Etude: Prime Numbers,” and “Of the Hours, Seamless.” In “Dissolving Forms,” the author looks beyond “the scrim of what seems to be” to explore the mysterious, the metaphysical, and the (perhaps fluid) boundaries of time and space. “The Colors of the World” looks at visual art, music, color, and the phenomenon of synesthesia, a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when hearing a sound produces the visualization of a color (something Jeanne Shannon experiences). “Honey Locust” moves through the yearly cycles of the natural world, from January’s “Moon of Popping Trees” to a December noon, from Jemez Springs, New Mexico, to Dungannon, Virginia. In “Summoning,” Shannon travels through the past, looking at the fairground carousel of her childhood and at moments spent with her favorite uncle listening to songs on his car radio. “When Panthers Roamed in the Blue Ridge” is a meditation on her family’s life in rural southwestern

Virginia in the 1940’s. In other poems, she goes back to her days as a college student studying music at a small women’s college in the 1950s and imagines Europe on the eve of World War I and the stars as they may have been ten thousand years ago. “Etude: Prime Numbers” offers a meditation on each of the prime numbers from 2 to 97. Each entry has the number of words that corresponds to the number itself; that is, Number 2 has an entry of only two words, while the entry for Number 97 is 97 words. There are references to concepts in science, religion, and metaphysics, and to mysterious phenomena such as the crop circles that appear regularly in English grain fields. “Of the Hours, Seamless” is a collage that blurs the boundary between poetry and lyric essay. It is a long journal entry recording the author’s reflections and preoccupations on a spring day in 2002. It features fragments of newspaper articles, excerpts from letters and phone calls, and notes about books, movies, stars, planets , and the mystic anchorite Julian of Norwich, who “could keep a cat for company, but not a cow.” It also offers advice to writers, including the admonition, “Write when you have something to say.” NME Summoning Jeanne Shannon Mercury HeartLink 2016 Paperback $15.95 215 pages New Mexico/Arizona Book Award winner for poetry - Reviewed by Joanne Bodin, New Mexico award-winning author and poet

ll you car enthusiasts, listen up! The 4th Annual Downtown Showdown Rod and Custom is coming to Albuquerque on September 9th at Cecilia’s Café (230 6th Street Southwest). This is the fourth year of this annual event. Event creator, Gary Aragon, saw this as a passion since he was young. “I have grown up with Classic cars all my life, I was raised in a bad neighborhood and cars were my way of staying away from my surroundings, my brother was the one who got me into the cars,” shared Aragon. “The show is a traditional hot rod show with radical customs of the 1950’s and 60’s. It’s always been an era I have loved and wanted to design a show.” The event features some of Albuquerque’s nicest work in cars.

“We offer a kick-off pre-party at a local Custom Car Shop called Joez Shop, giving people the opportunity to check out his work.” Attendees will have the chance to try some terrific food from Cecilia’s Cafe. “This is a welcoming get-together for all,” says Aragon. “But also shows the out-of-towners a great time. We have some well known Car Clubs and individuals from Arizona, Utah, California, Texas, and Colorado. There will also be live music from The Shadowmen and Felix Y Los Gatos, with an awesome after-party at US Kustoms.
