LET US ENTERTAIN YOU: FUNNY MONEY

H

enry Perkins is a mild mannered accountant who— up to now—has lived a pretty routine life. It’s his birthday, and he is looking forward to a quiet dinner with his wife, Jean, and their good friends Vic and Betty Johnson. Just a nice, simple celebration perfectly suited to a man who has little excitement in his life. That plan goes right out the window, though, when Henry discovers the briefcase he is carrying is not full of his papers, pencils, memos, etc., but stuffed with cash—lots and lots of cash! That’s the setup for Ray Cooney’s wonderful comedic play, Funny Money. The show that delighted London audiences for two solid years, and then charmed audiences in France for over three years more, is making a stop at The Adobe Theater on July 7-30. Funny Money has entertained audiences wherever it has played. It is, after all, a situation many people have probably wondered about…what would you do if you picked up the wrong briefcase on your way home from work and it was full of cash? Henry decides he wants to keep it and get out of town. Of course, that is easier said than done. First, there are his dinner guests, the Johnsons—how to get them to go home so he and Jean can disappear? And who’s that knocking at the door?

6I

New Mexico Entertainment • July 2017

The police?! What else could possibly go wrong? A lot! When a man carrying Henry’s briefcase is fished out of the river with a bullet hole in his head, more police arrive to give Jean the “bad news.” Then, of course, there are the bad guys: “Mr. Nasty” and “Mr. Big”. Appearing in Funny Money are Tim Riley (Henry Perkins), Jennifer Benoit (Jean Perkins), Sunny Greycloud Sampson (Bill), Neil Faulconbridge (Davenport), Eriks Zapeda (Betty Johnson), Daniel Anaya (Vic Johnson), Jesse Miller (Slater), and Vince Tomardy (A passerby). Director Andrea Haskett says the show is a lot of fun. “The thing about a great farce is the number of doors and timing. So come for the farce and stay for the shtick!” Funny Money, directed by Andrea Haskett (Dancing at Lughnasa, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, and The White-Headed Boy), opens Friday, July 7, 2017, and runs through Sunday, July 30. Friday and Saturday performances begin promptly at 7:30pm, and Sunday matinees start at 2:00pm. MAKE ‘EM LAUGH: RUSTY RUTHERFORD Where did your love of comedy come from? I grew up in a family that laughed a lot. My dad has always been quiet and serious, but very clever when does make jokes. My mom is very warm and often accidentally funny. Since I can remember I’ve always enjoyed making people laugh. I was voted “class clown” in high school, as well as “most likely to start a cult.” I was pretty proud of both of those. When I realized that through comedy I had the power to make someone’s day a little bit better, I decided it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Do you remember your first gig? What was it like? My first time doing comedy in front of a live audience was my sophomore year of high school. I had just started my own Public Access TV show called “Don’t Watch This” and my plan was to do a stupid routine for the talent show auditions and film myself getting kicked out of the auditions and pulled off stage. To my surprise, the judges liked my act, which involved me running around with a rubber mallet chanting, “When I say Rubber, you say Mallet!”and I was chosen to perform in Sandia’s talent show. The day came and I was confident that the entire audience of 2,000 teenagers would hate the act, but I thought it would be funny to watch on tape later on. Well to my surprise, when I walked onto the gym floor wielding my rubber mallet, the audience went wild. The euphoric rush I got from the screaming audience got me instantly addicted to the stage. My first time do straight stand up was the opposite. I was 17 and did an open mic at Chelsea’s Street Pub, a restaurant that used to be at the mall. It was a Monday night and the audience consisted of a few other comedians awaiting their turn on the mic, and two tables of families eating dinner that had no idea a comedy show was going on that night. I did what I thought stand

8I

New Mexico Entertainment • July 2017

MAKE ‘EM LAUGH: RUSTY RUTHERFORD up was supposed to be, and I filmed it. I watched the video of my set and realized just how bad it was. I was very bad, specially at stand up, for quite a while before I started getting into the grove and discovering my voice. Stand up comedy takes a lot of persistence of being bad for a while and grinding through those painful times with the hopes that it will pay off down the road, but I’m definitely glad I stuck it out. What do you feel is missing when it comes to the comedy scene in Albuquerque? Stand up is finally starting to boom again. Our city has a growing handful of up and coming comics, who often double as producers and promoters, working their tails off at their craft and making our scene know. That being said, the majority of our city still has no idea how much comedy is happening here. It would be great to have producers and promoters that aren’t necessarily comics to but still have a passion for the art to help make it know how much comedy happens here. It would be great to have a comedy club again, but in the meantime I would like to see more of the casinos and venues that bring big national comics to New Mexico reach out and start working to have local openers. The comedians would get more exposure and the audience would discover hilarious local talent that they may have no idea was here otherwise. What is your inspiration when it comes to planning your sets? Being on stage alone with a microphone and an audience is one of the most freeing and liberating feelings in the world, but the time a comedian is on stage is a small fraction of the actual work that goes into stand up. The stage is when you get paid off for all you’ve been 9I

New Mexico Entertainment • July 2017

working on. I strive to find inspiration in everything around me. Much like a photographer will always have an eye open for their next shot, I try to stay constantly open and aware of the potential for humor in everything around me. Because of this, some of my jokes come from little things I’ve observed that sparks a funny thought, others come from personal struggles that I try to find the humor in, like girls breaking my heart or trying to figure out how I’m going to pay rent this month, and other bits come from things that I find bigger to society that I attempt to get people to view in a new way through humor. I feel like constantly looking for the humor in everyday life is a good way to live, not only for comedians, but for everybody.

“...I realized... through comedy I had the power to make someone’s day.” What gigs do you have coming down the pipeline? I host the “First Friday’s Comedy Contest” on the first Friday of every month at 8:00pm at Tractor Brewing in Wells Park. It’s a great chance to see myself and 10 other comedians all in one night. I will also be performing at Palmer’s Brewery on Friday, July 28th at 8:00pm. And if you want to mix things up a bit, I act in The Dinner Detective, an interactive murdermystery dinner theater show that is full of laughs at the Marriott Uptown, July 8th and July 29th at 6:00pm. Cindy Pickett Picking the brain of

10 I

New Mexico Entertainment • July 2017

O

n a cool January morning, I got to meet the mother of all movie mothers. Known as the matriarch to the mischievous fellow Ferris Bueller, Cindy Pickett solidified her place in 80s cult movie history as Katie Bueller in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. As excited as I was to meet the woman who played one of the coolest movie characters on the planet, I also appreciated Pickett’s work as another mother in a madefor-television movie that still touches my heart to this day, I Know My First Name Is Steven. Even though these two movies (released in 1986, and 1989, respectively) truly showcase Pickett’s acting chops, the acting bug bit her years before. The daughter of director and drama teacher Cecil Pickett, acting was in her blood. Pickett started strong in her career, landing a role on the legendary soap opera Guiding Light as Jacqueline “Jackie” Scott Marler Spaulding. “It was a dream job,” Pickett says. “Good pay, wonderful scripts, and amazing talent. A 15-year-old Kevin Bacon was cast at the same time, and Jobeth Williams, who had been a friend of mine in Houston, also was added to the cast. The writers had an uncanny knack for writing our personal history into our character, which gave them more depth than the usual sappy material on the other soaps. It was the perfect training ground for a theatre actor going from projecting to the last row in the theatre to the intimacy and simplicity and necessity of less-ismore on film. When it was our story line, we would have to memorize 30 pages of dialogue a night! That was a great challenge from having weeks to prepare in the theatre to an overnight “candles in the bath” memorizing session and not knowing your 11 I

blocking until you were on set and ready to shoot. But what that did was make the actor more vulnerable and the emotion more spontaneous, which is something so important, even necessary, for close-ups and the life and truth of a character on film.” Pickett stepped out of her comfort zone in 1980 when she appeared in the erotic film Night Games (Jeux de Nuit), finding herself doing several nude scenes. Although the film didn’t boost Pickett’s career at the time, she doesn’t regret the opportunity. “With Night Games, it was an opportunity to work with a legend on, yes, not so great material, but I didn’t care,” shared Pickett. “I got to travel to the Philippines and work with an international crew. Remember, I was still fresh from Texas, college, and regional theatre. Growing up in the theatre, I was not shy about my body. How many times did we have to all dress in the same dressing room!? Modesty does not belong in the arts. Plus, I had never travelled outside of the country—and to get paid for it?” Not shying away from nudity created a proud moment in her career, leading to other opportunities. “To work with a Svengali and to have my name tagged at the end of ‘Bardot, Deneuve, Fonda...Pickett!’ I did a very tasteful layout for Playboy. The West Coast editor became my friend, and she let me pick out some of the shots for my personal use, which I use at these conventions. I put [shots of myself from] Ferris Bueller on one end of the table and [from] Playboy on the other—they are my two best sellers!” Pickett found herself flourishing in other roles, including Kay Stayner in the television mini-series I Know My First Name Is Steven, the

story of Steven Stayner, who was kidnapped at the age of 7 by child molestor Kenneth Parnell and who returned to his family at the age of 14. The mini-series was riveting, and Pickett passionately played the part of Steven’s mother, Kay. She remembered her time on set. “I had given birth to my son, Shane, six weeks before when they offered me this wonderful role,” said Pickett. “I still had my baby weight and wasn’t really ready to work. But when I read the script, I knew I had to play this woman, who kept the faith he would come home, long after everyone else had given up. She and I became friends as we did many interviews together. She was very powerful in her quiet strength. I got to know her whole family—they would visit the set—and Steven did a cameo at the end of the movie playing the cop who brings him back to our house, after being gone for 7 years. I’m sure you know it ended in tragedy, this fable. Steven bought a motorcycle with the 12 I

New Mexico Entertainment • July 2017

money he got for selling his story, and, not too long after our movie aired, he was hit by a car on a rainy night on that motorcycle and killed. As an actress, it was a very emotional experience as I had just had a son, and the thought of him being abducted made the experience and the feelings very real, which is what you must find as an actress—the truth.” Many actors strive to have that one role that will memorialize them. For Pickett, that movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. She is remembered as the loving mother of America’s favorite misunderstood misfit. The experience on set was a loving one, and Pickett remembers it fondly. “Ferris Bueller has been invited into the national archives. How many actors can say they have been in a film that has been deemed a national treasure! When we made this delightful, and in the end, important movie, we had no idea that it would be the John Hughes film that would rise to the top and turn into the cult classic it has become.

All of Hughes’s movies were fun and captured the teen angst that kids today can still relate to. To me, that is the definition of a classic: endurance, relatability.” Pickett was always impressed with Hughes’s talent, who seemed consistently able to tap into the mind of the American teenager. “John had some kind of insight into the pulse of that generation, and Ferris embodied the best: the hope of how to be positive and live in humor and push the envelope a little, to manage and maneuver through that minefield of adolescence. The last line says it all, ‘Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.’ That was not the final line that was written in the original script. I think it is something John came up with as we were shooting.” In addition to Hughes’s ability to understand and reflect the generation’s youth through his writing, Pickett also deeply respected Hughes’s directorial prowess. “He loved ad-libbing if it worked. We had that freedom, and he always encouraged his actors to bring something fresh to a scene. He was a genius.” Working with the cast, Pickett recalls, was a comfortable, gratifying, and even luxurious experience.

“As far as being on the set, the kids mostly stayed together after work, but in the Bueller house, there was a pool table, and when there was a long lighting set up or at lunch, we would all migrate to that pool table! It was an easy set, with a perfect cast, and everyone got along. On Fridays, the caterer would always make a grand meal with lobster and champagne. It was magical in every way—the ‘windy city’, great cast, brilliant script, even more brilliant director.” Not only was the cast tight, Pickett fondly remembers Hughes joining them offset for some nights on the town. “On the weekends, sometimes we’d go dancing, and John would go with us. He wouldn’t dance but loved being with young people— he was so young at heart. The girls would all dance together, and he would just watch and walk us back to the hotel.” While working on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pickett got more than a phenomenal acting experience. She also met her future real-life husband. “As you probably know, Lyman Ward, who played Mr. Bueller, and I met and started dating while we were making the movie, and eventually got married and had a couple of kids of our own. When my son was around 8 years old, he turned to me after we had watched the movie a million

“I do believe and live by that last line: ‘If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.’” and one times and said, ‘Mom, why didn’t you name me Ferris?’” Pickett continues working, finishing up projects Star Trek Equinox: The Night of Time, Opus of an Angel, and Rose, which was filmed here in New Mexico. She counts her blessings every day that she gets to wake up in the morning and do the work she is passionate about. When it comes to

life, she looks to her famous movie as a mantra. “I feel very blessed to have been a part of the experience that was the making of this classic [Ferris Bueller], and I do believe and live by that last line: ‘If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.’” She is living by those words every day. BETWEEN THE PAGES This cookbook is for adults and kids who cook together and learn together. The NM organization Cooking With Kids, founded in Santa Fe, produced a wonderful book that celebrates over two decades of educating school kids about growing and cooking healthful food. The authors have put their cumulative knowledge and souls into this book—a true gift to us all. As a bookseller, I once sold children’s cookbooks—this one take the “cake”. The spiral spine opens flat and can turn back on itself to save space, and the pages are sturdy enough to wipe clean. My grand-daughter Kate (10) who cooks enjoys the illustrations drawn by her peers. Our favorite is the banana hugging a carrot. There is a helpful glossary of cooking words and an exceptional index. Many recipes are from around the world, replete with histories of recipe origins. This cookbook is also a how-to guide, from planting seeds to harvest time. What to plant? Purple potatoes or purple carrots? Cook with legumes, fruits, and grains? There is a recipe for them all. The cookbook also provides creative space to write a poem using recipe names, as well as coloring pages. Kate especially likes the clear ingredient lists and directions. And how she and her grand-dad can plant a new summer garden with the book’s mantra—together. NME - Ruth E. The Adventures of Spike & Jeremiah c e l e b r a t e s children’s power of imagination. The book highlights the relationship between a young boy and his reptile as they discover the wonders of the world by incorporating art, friendship, and wonder. Native author Magdelena Thomas looked close to home for the characters of the book. “The story was inspired by my sons and the fact that there were no books that highlighted a bearded dragon.” Bearded dragons are frequently favored as excellent reptilian pets for children. Reader response to the book has been favorable—it is nearly out of stock on Amazon. Thomas has been happy with the support. “The response has been great but slow because I am an independent, self-published author. It is up to me, and my vision, to knock on doors and continually talk to people about my passion for my son and Spike [the bearded dragon] so they can join the adventure!” The book is truly a family affair, with Thomas giving her sons the opportunity to take part in the process. “My oldest son, Matthew, also gets involved in the setup of book signings and picture approval. We encourage each other every day to be the best version of us. I am a huge advocate [of] allowing your children to flourish under guidance and encouragement.” The Adventures of Spike & Jeremiah will be having a book reading on Friday, July 28, from 11:00am to 12:30pm at Bookworks in Albuquerque. The reading will be followed by a signing with the star of the book, Jeremiah, and a #SpiketheBeardedDragon mascot. NME - Teresa Ewers

THE CUT: CHEF MARC QUIÑONES OF MAS

THERE’S A NEW

CHEF

IN TOWN W

ant the recipe for taking something great and making it even better? We know just the guy to ask! Chef Marc Quiñones, who was named Executive Chef of Hotel Andaluz earlier this year, is bringing his own flavor to the already established MÁS – Tapas y Vino, located inside Albuquerque’s boutique hotel. The full-service restaurant and tapas bar— small plates, for those who are wondering— has been thriving since it opened in 2013, bringing traditional Spanish cuisine to the downtown area. With bold flavors, locallysourced ingredients, and a thoughtfully crafted menu and wine list, MÁS had proven its success and left very little room, if any, for improvement. Enter Chef Marc Quiñones. Well-known and highly respected in the culinary scene, it was only a matter of time before Quiñones’s passion and skills transformed into flavors of their own, resulting in changes both inside and outside of the kitchen. Quiñones sat down and discussed his new role at the downtown hotspot and what the future looks like at MÁS – Tapas y Vino now that he’s the new chef in charge. “You see, MÁS was a very good restaurant before I got there, but upon my arrival, I knew that to take it to the next level was going to require me to dedicate myself to focusing on the details,” he explains. “I am very detail-oriented. I also enjoy being visible in the restaurant and our open kitchen gives me the ability to interact with our guests on a

16 I

daily basis. That’s fun, and I know [the guests] enjoy seeing me in action leading my team.” MÁS guests aren’t the only ones who get to see the chef in action. Quiñones has a pretty impressive social media presence with over 30,000 followers, all of whom get to see the life and work of Albuquerque Magazine’s two-time “Best Chef in the City” award winner live in action. Whether he is showing off one of his beautifully presented dishes or documenting one of his television appearances, his followers are always up to date on what @ChefMQ is up to! “From my early days, I have been very consistent in interacting and involving my followers on my journey. By being consistent in doing that, the amount of people who follow me has grown tremendously over the years,” he says. “But again, it’s only because they, too, feel a part of what I do. And that’s genuine. So many people have come down to MÁS to try my food, and I am just so appreciative.” Within a month of his reign, Chef Marc Quiñones rolled out brand new menus in both MÁS and Ibiza— the rooftop lounge located within Hotel Andaluz. He only slightly modified existing guest favorites, he says, but the majority of the items on the current menu(s) are brand new. He did, however, remain true to the Mediterranean and Spanish focus but simply added a more contemporary flair. With so many dishes to choose from, a newcomer might seek a recommendation from the Le Cordon Bleu Graduate, in which case Quiñones was quick to recommend The Iberian Black Pig. “It’s literally called The Secreto cut because it’s hidden inside the shoulder of the pig. We sear on the plancha and serve it on top of grilled sourdough with a little caramelized onion, fresh thyme, and oregano,” he describes. “The dish is finished with a bit of maldon sea salt. Totally out of this world….Just fantastic!” Outside of the kitchen, Quiñones is a loving father and husband, who he says he owes everything to his family. “They support me so much and are so understanding of my obligations,” he gushes. “They are so much fun, and if I am not working, you can best believe that I am spending my time with them.” The future looks bright for both Chef Quiñones and Hotel Andaluz; a perfect pairing, if you will. To get a taste of the passion and hard-work that goes into these dishes, visit MÁS – Tapas y Vino for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and meet the chef who’s stirring up something different.
