NOW SHOWING: THE PUNI...NO WAIT, TAKEN...NO THAT’S NOT IT EITHER. OH, THE EQUALIZER
“You know this guy just plowed through a good chunk of our guys like nothing, maybe we should just leave him alone and write off our losses.”
B
efore I start I want you all to know that I like this movie. It is a good action flick that understands that a good chunk of what makes an action sequence enjoyable is the anticipation of the action, not just the action itself. This movie lets you sit there and go “Oh shit, you done fucked up, here it comes!”, and that foreplay makes the climax of the hero kicking the shit out of a bad guy even better. I think there is some relationship advice in there somewhere, but I digress. I say this because what I’m about to write is going to sound like criticism, and it is because I’m a fucking critic, but even as I say these things I want you to remember that I really liked this movie and it was an enjoyable two hours of film watching. How many fucking “Exspy/special forces/assassin trying to live a normal life” action heroes do we need? When are bad guys going to learn “You know this guy just plowed through a good chunk of our guys like nothing, maybe we should just leave him alone and write off our losses”. Nooooo these fuckers just keep throwing henchman after henchman at bad asses then go
“Well I’ll just kill their wife/kid/dog, that will teach them!” Yeah, that is a fucking good idea, why don’t you just give them a chainsaw, bend over, and let them fuck you with it. So if this formula is so overused why is this movie decent? Well first off it is a reboot without feeling like it is a reboot. Sure the series that was made back in 1985-1989 was pretty popular, but it never reached that “Classic” status that many other properties that they talk about rebooting (I’m looking at you “Ghostbusters”). This keeps it from being bogged down by heavy expectations to live up to. This lets them pull what Marvel did with “Guardians of the Galaxy”, pretty much make a completely new property while building off of a decent foundation by reworking the original story to a more modern audience. So in the end this is a reboot that can become even better than the source material it is drawing on and I hope it gets popular enough that Sony continues the story. If only Marvel could make a “Punisher” movie this good.

COVER STORY: SEAN PATRICK FLANERY By Teresa Ewers
W
hen Sean Patrick Flanery made a stop back to the “Querque”, as he likes to call it, last month, to say that interviewing the star of Boondock Saints and Dexter wasn’t a little intimidating would be an understatement, not because the man has over 90 projects on his resume, but because the man is a live wire. You never know what he’ll say or do. Not surprising, as this is the same man that, while attending the University of St. Thomas in Houston, saw a beautiful girl leaving a building on campus every Monday decided to drop an English class and sign up for "whatever the hell they were teaching in that building". The building was the University's theater department, and the class was acting. Well, I can truly say that Flanery is one of the most down to earth people you could meet and has a mouth like a sailor, another one of his best traits - speaking the truth, no matter it may be addressed. It’s also safe to say that his impulsive nature has worked for him. His love for theater led to some amazing roles and the opportunity to work with acting greats like Christopher Walken in the movie Suicide Kings, an experience that Flanery cherishes. “I dig working Christopher Walken,” says Flanery. “He’s a solid individual. I love work with big name like Walkin. I’ve made a career out of doing independent films, so I 8

truly enjoy experiences like that.” One of Flanery’s most memorable roles, Connor MacManus in the Boondock Saints franchise, is one he has a soft spot for and he understands why it resonates with fans. “Our characters do what everybody secretly wants somebody to do in society. There’s people out there that just deserve it.” Flanery has played in several different genres, but when it comes to choosing a favorite, he says it comes down to something else. “It about good, good material. I love to do good writing. I love to do something that I don’t have to convince myself is real. If the writing is good enough and believe it wholeheartedly, your body takes over and surprises you with what it does. That’s my favorite stuff to do.” Flanery took part in this year’s Albuquerque Comic Con and shared how he felt about his fan base and events like the Con that give him an insight of how his fan feel about his work. “Doing film you don’t get that immediate response like you do in theater. But when you go to an event like this and hear what people think about the films and the work that you’ve done, so it’s mutually beneficial. It’s nourishment for the Thespian soul.” When Flanery is not working the mind with scripts, he is working the body as a high ranking martial artist, earning his black belt in

He owns his own BJJ academy called Hollywood Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in West Hollywood, Ca. where he trains regularly depending on his film schedule. Flanery also spends time with his special pooch, Donut, who has become a real fixture in his life. “She’s 14 years old,” says Flanery. “I got her when she was 5 months old and she is one of the best creatures I’ve ever met.” Flanery currently wrapped on his latest film, Kepler’s Dream, filmed here in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and has been greenlighted for Boondock Saints III. He also has four others new films, The Last Word, Broken Horses, Gibby and The Kiss.

ean Patrick Flanery has truly made a name for himself. With over 90 roles under his acting belt, including playing the role of Connor MacManus in The Boondock Saints and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, Bobby Dagen in Saw 3D and Jacob Elway on Dexter, Flanery enjoys what he does and shows no signs of stopping. When it comes to the legacy he wants to leave behind, Flanery has a goal that most people strive for. “I think everyone would like their legacy to be that they left this place a little better than they found it,” shares Flanery. “I’m in the most expendable industry known to man, it’s not like you change the world with films, but hopefully something I’ve done has made somebody think and maybe make a positive choice in their life.”
THE ART WORLD: PEEPSHOW AT STRANGE FACTORY By Winter Elise
P
eepshow. The word alone conjures images of dark seedy establishments where people slip coins into a machine for a short glimpse of a beautiful naked woman. In some cases it may remind you of the pin-ups of yester year smiling in the kitchen with high heels on. Peepshow Stranger Factory style will be showcases the female form in an empowering way, turning your preconceived notion upside down. Curated by Brandt Peters a select group of artist will be displaying their take on empowered, beautiful, and sometimes dangerous works of the female form. Stranger Factory in Nob Hill features in their words “post modern, pop surrealist and “lowbrow” art community to Albuquerque”. They are continually pushing the norms of the art community, with shows dedicated to areas of art usually ignore in the galleries of New Mexico. With a new show every month, and artist from around the globe there is always something to see at Stranger Factory. More then just showing off the artist they work with Stranger Factory brings workshops by these artist to their location in Nob Hill. By the middle of this year They hope to have their workshops back up and running featuring tutorials by the artist on display. Having personally attended a number of these workshops last year I have to say I can’t wait for them to make a comeback. One of the main concerns facing Stranger
Factory is space. With so many talent artist showing paintings, sculpture, and toys, they are looking to increase their square footage. When asked why they choose to open an art gallery here in Albuquerque rather than the art mecca of Santa Fe, they felt the homegrown gallery they had in mind simply belong here in ABQ. “ When we were looking Santa Fe had an unsustained feel to it, while Albuquerque felt as if it was growing and changing.” Brandt Peters and Kathy Olivas did the research on both towns before moving out here from Los Angeles. Talking to people in Santa Fe they found a culture designed for an older crowd of art collectors who thought of art has an investment. Santa Fe had no plan to bring in younger customers or artists and the gallery scene was politically motivate and stagnant. Albuquerque was newer on the art scene, with a more cooperative mentality that catered to the younger generations. Come out in February, and every month after that, to see the newest in a steady stream of thought provoking, eye candy that Stranger factory has to offer. See, feel, learn what great art can do for your soul.

THE CUT: FRESH ABQ
F
reshABQ may not be a household name yet, but it will be. This innovated venture by Chef Jon Young of Corrales, New Mexico will soon be on everyone lips and their stomachs. It’s not just a food truck; it’s a food revolution on wheels. FreshABQ stands out from the crowd by offering a dine-in experience in a mobile setting. Cooking with only the freshest ingredients, as local as possible, FreshABQ is embracing sustainable, green living, while remaining community focused. FreshABQ began as an idea in Chef Young’s mind. Watching the food truck revolution spread across this nation, he wanted to bring people to their food in style. The plan formed when he and his wife, Melissa Young, found the old KOB news 1955 Twin Motor Coach bus just sitting outside Socorro, New Mexico, not being used. With a vision few could h a v e
seen, and a skill set to make it happen, the Youngs and their mechanic, Micah BlackGarcia, drove, and of course towed, the vintage bus up to Corrales and began renovations. The touring bus is in the process of going form a rusty hollowed out shell to a food bistro on wheels with seating for twelve. The bus will be themed after the famous Orient Express and will take its passengers on tantalizing food adventures. During the month, the bus will go from a fresh food truck menu to Epicurean Chef ’s dinners in different locations around New Mexico. What better way to bring the land and its food together in one place? Most of the fresh produce will be supplied by Arca, a private not-for-profit organization. They help supply over 600 jobs for developmentally disable children and adults and organically grown food here in New Mexico. “Giving back to the community and sustainably sourced food is important to FreshAbq,” says Chef Young. “We want people to know what’s in their food, where it comes from, and how it was prepared.” In the future, Chef Young and his wife envision taking FreshABQ even further, by taking the bus and its passengers out to locally source their food themselves. “It’s important to see each step in the process to truly appreciate your dining experience,” shared Young. New Mexico has many unique food options available and FreshABQ wants to take you to them all. Visit www.supportfreshabq.com and find out how you can help bring this dream to life.

FEBRUARY 2015 UNTIL FEB 1 I THE NIGHT THOREAU SPENT IN JAIL The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail is an exciting, poignant, accessible, and intellectually engrossing play with several shifting and interpolated scenes from the real and imagined life of Henry David Thoreau (1817-62), the great nineteenth-century American author and poet-philosopher. The play is a dramatic representation of a vital moment in our history, in which the 29-year-old Thoreau’s ardent refusal to pay taxes—in protest to the United States government’s involvement in the Mexican War—landed him in prison in his home of Concord, Massachusetts. 27-MARCH 22 I THE KING AND I East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story.
