TURN IT UP: VANS WARPED TOUR By Teresa Ewers

ECHOSMITH

O

ne of the hottest tickets in 2014 is the Vans Warped Tour. Warped is jammed packed with over 70 bands offering Albuquerque a rock experience you will not forget. Warped began as a showcase for punk rock music, but its more recent line-ups have featured diverse genres. Created by Kevin Lyman, The Warped Tour was an bright idea thought up by Lyman while working on skateboarding shows like Vision Skate Escape and Holiday Havoc. The name came from the short-lived magazine, Warp. This year's show is featuring around 76 bands and artists including Emilie Autumns and Echosmith. Learn more about t two of this year’s artist.

I

n 12 short months, Echosmith have gone from little-known Los Angeles alt-pop gem to Warped Tour's undeniable breakout band. Basking in the glow of a summer spent playing to thousands of fans all over the country, the quartet-which consists of Sierota siblings Jamie (vocals/guitar), Sydney (vocals/keyboard), Noah (vocals/bass), and Graham (drums)-is even more excited to share their music with all the people who weren't able to see them on the annual punk-rock summer camp. "We were super excited when we June 2014

found out we'd be playing [Warped Tour]," remembers Jamie. "So many bands grow from that and come out with tons of fans." Adds Sydney, "Going into it, I was totally nervous because we were so different, style-wise and age-wise, from almost every other band and I wasn't sure if that was going to work against us, but it ended up being the exact opposite." The band was originally slated to play just the first half of the tour, but the reaction was so overwhelming, they were invited to stay until the end, which meant more people would get to hear music off the band's upcoming debut album, Talking Dreams, out Oct. 1. "I remember the first time it happened [on Warped], it seemed so weird to me," remembers Sydney. "I'd get the chills every time--even though it was 110 degrees. It's just so cool to see other people as passionate about the band as we are." One song that seems to get the loudest crowd response is "Cool Kids," a dreamy Smiths-esque strut that encourages people embrace our differences because that's actually what makes each and every one of us cool. With lyrics like, "I wish that I could be like the cool kids / 'Cause all the cool kids seem to fit in," it's no wonder fans of all ages are relating to the sentiment. Echosmith's "in crowd" of outsiders is sure to grow when the band hits the road for more tour dates this fall. So what's it like for them to look out on-stage and see a sea of smiling young faces staring back? "I think it's really cool to be the same age as our fans," explains Sydney, "because when we meet each other and start talking, it's like we're friends already."

LET US ENTERTAIN YOU: ABQ COMIC EXPO By Teresa Ewers

A

lbuquerque is in for another outstanding year of comics. This year we experience the Albuquerque Comic Expo, an educational nonprofit corporation dedicated promoting the popular arts primarily through an annual convention and other public events that celebrate the rich history and cultural impact of comics. ACE was developed when creator Greg Derrick felt there was a need for a strong comic convention in Albuquerque. "Albuquerque is a great place, but it had nothing in the way of comic book conventions," shared Jyllian Roach, Media Manager for the Albuquerque Comic Expo. "The idea was to create an show that focused on comic books and pop culture, while also promoting ideas like community and literacy." When it comes to how the expo differs from other conventions here in the state, Roach shared that ACE had a clear vision to make their event different. "ACE differs from other comic shows, both here in the state and on a national level, by remembering that people come to these shows to have fun," says Roach. "We don't want to be the kind of convention that makes attendees pay an entry fee and then pay to enjoy themselves. Yes, we have paid events and there are many amazing exhibitors and artists selling their wares on the show floor, but we go out of our way to make sure that an attendee can come to

the show and still have plenty to do without having to open their wallet a second time." This year's event is sure to please, including celebrity guests Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hunk), J. August Richards (MarvelÂŽ Agents of Shield) and RJ Mitte of Breaking Bad, comic guests Aaron Campbell (Green Hornet, Year One, Sherlock Holmes), Chris 'Oz' Fulton (Transformers, Bettie Page) and Chrissie Zullo (Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love). "There are a two factors when choosing guests for ACE," shares Roach. "The first is listening to fans. In previous years, we would ask followers on our Facebook and Twitter accounts to tell us who they would like to see. This year we did things just a like bit differently and gave fans the opportunity to help us design ACE through our funder's forum. We want our fans to be involved with making the show great. The other thing we keep in mind is the idea that we want to bring to the show amazing people who have never been to Albuquerque. This year, we are bringing comic legends Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti and pop culture icon Joel Hodgson - all of whom have never participated in an event in the state." You can find a full list of guests and show details on their website at www.abqcomicexpo.com.

THE 5: RICHARD HATCH By Teresa Ewers The name is well known in the sci-fi genre, and Richard Hatch is proud of his history. Known for his character, Apollo, and then Zarek in both the original and revamp of Battlestar Galactica, Hatch has held these characters close to his heart. He took a moment from his latest event to answer five answers about his time on Battlestar and upcoming projects.

T

o say that Battlestar Galactica is dear to your heart is an understatement. You have been a strong proponent for this show coming back, for years after it was cancelled. What was it about this show that drives such passion for you? What I love most about the Battlestar story is that it’s about the heroic struggle to survive the impossible, which brings out the very best and the very worst in all of us. This story of life and death forces every character to deal with their humanity and with their deepest fears and frailties, where they are put into situations where they must make morally conflicting decisions and step beyond their bias and limitations to achieve the impossible. What better landscape for creating great drama and testing delving deeply in the heart of every character. Great premise. The character of Zarek was interesting. When you read the script and who this man was, did you come in with an idea of how you would play him or just decided, 'Let's see how this goes'? I loved the breakdown for Zarek!! “A

deeply wounded, damaged and conflicted idealist still struggling do the right thing, a man who had lost faith in the system for good reason and who always spoke the truth whether anyone wanted to listen or not”. I was told that this character of Zarek was a political revolutionary a la Nelson Mandela only darker, but as always actors take the basic character layout and build upon it with their intuition and imagination. We had very talented writers and directors who worked with us to evolve and deepen these characters. Zarek was one of my most favorite characters in my career. What lead to the team-up with you and Star Trek star Walter Koenig? You've now appeared in two projects with him? How did that get started? I was always a Star Trek fan and through the conventions I met him several times. When they were casting for Inalienable, a script he wrote, he decided upon me, which surprised me as I didn’t really know him that well. However I loved the story and the character he wanted me to play. Actually one of the most challenging char-

THE 5: RICHARD HATCH By Teresa Ewers acters I’ve ever play. A man who felt responsible for the death of his family when he was driving and lost control of their car. And after he’s infected and thinks he’s going to die he discovers that the very thing he thinks is going to kill him actually resurrects his life. A powerful character arc. After that very positive experience working with Walter it was only natural to want to work together again. One of your current projects is a reality show called, "Who the Frak?" Tell a little bit about that. Who The Frak is a social network built around a reality show I came up with and developed with my business partner, Michael Wehrhahn. I was asked to do a reality show a few years back, but wasn’t sure how I felt about that. I studied all the reality shows at that time and even brought a team together to film some segments for a idea I had to see if I felt positive enough

about the experience to move forward with the company interested in me. I actually like doing my own filming but didn’t like the ideas the company had about developing a show around me. They wanted to get rid of all my friends and cast actors to play some of the roles in the show. I realized they weren’t really interested in reality, or in my life, but in just creating superficial drama and shocking the audience. I decided to develop my own reality show, which would follow me and my actor, director, and producer friends in the industry, as they all tried to find success in this very up and down entertainment business, which can test one on every level and creates realistic and very moving and uplifting drama. So, what other projects do we have to look forward to? I just finished filming a pilot presentation with Malcolm Mcdowell called Cowboys and Engines, a steam punk retrofuristic western set in 1887. Also finished filming another pilot call After The Harvest, a post apocalyptic story a la MAD MAX with Vernon Wells, who played the bad guy in the original Mad Max series. Also just filmed the role of General Karn in Prelude to AXANAR, which is an introduction to the movie, a very high end fan/indie trek film, which I think is going to change the face of fan films forever. The level of talent and scope of production is quite amazing. We will be filming the movie in the Fall. Last but not least I’m developing a webseries to launch my own Sci-fi novel entitled Magellan, which will debut early next year. We will be shooting the webseries later this year. Other than that, I teach and lecture on acting and “Creating a more successful life” all over the country, at Colleges and Universities and also for private organizations. I also have an ongoing acting workshop in Studio City on Tuesdays. Go to richardhatch.com for all the details and info.

ystery Science Theater 3000 - you hear the name, you know the show and you know the comedian behind the laughs. Joe Hodgson began his career in seventh grade as a magician and ventriloquist. He performed in local events and upon graduation from Ashwaubenon High School, he moved to Minneapolis to study Theater and Mass Media. Hodgson continued to develop his magic act by adding comedy and performing the new act in coffee houses and comedy clubs. His regular gig at The Comedy Magic Club lead to his network television debut on The Late Show David Letterman. But it was the show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) that made Hodgson a household name. Building on his gift of designing toys, Hodgson built three robot puppets and created MST3K in 1988, which was picked up by The Comedy Channel, which became Comedy Central. Hodgson surprised audiences when he made the decision to leave the show after their 100th

episode. In a 2008 interview, Hodgson shared his feeling about his departure from the show. "I was, like, totally happy at Mystery Science Theater. I loved it. I wanted to stay, but I was basically having a fight with my partner, Jim Mallon. So we weren't getting along and so I just felt like - I thought it really could possibly jeopardize the show. It would have been easy to create factions out of the group. And by that time it would not have been a fun show to work on. And so, I felt like I saw it coming and I just thought [leaving] was the best thing at the time." Hodgson moved on to other projects, including his new show, Cinematic Titanic, following the same "riffing on bad movies" premise. The show had a strong seven year run finishing on December 30, 2013. Hodgson is currently touring with his new show, Riffing Myself, a one-man-show detailing his life and career through slides, video and live interaction. Hodgson will be presenting this show at this year's Albuquerque Comic Expo. Learn more at http://abqcomicexpo.com/events/riffing-myself/

ust south of Central Ave. on Gold Street sits ArtBar. A small unassuming place from the outside, ArtBar spacious layout and full stocked bar will make you glad you stopped in. It’s a members-only club here in downtown Albuquerque. Before you let that turn you off, there are some things you should know. The membership fee of $30 a year goes to a support art programs all over Albuquerque. They hope to expand that to helping communities throughout New Mexico. Once you’re a member, you can bring up to ten guest with you at any time, as long as you’re on-site with them. It also gives you the ability to rent out ArtBar and hold your own art openings or events on the premises. The night I went, ArtBar was presenting comedians on a road trip from Seattle. The bartenders are friendly, attentive, and, most importantly, mix a great drink. The bar itself is a work art, from the hanging lights to the comfy couches set around the room. Aaron Kirby is on stage. Slipping around the curtain we fined seats on one of the leather couches by a window. I’m barely in my seat before I start laughing uncontrollably, which continues until his set ends. Next up, Derek Sheen. He truly looks like he is right out of Seattle, circa 1992, with his flannel shirt and shorts. Microphone in hand, he has the audience holding their sides within seconds. Now these guys are not for the light of heart, or easily offended, but I can imagine those people would know better then to go to comedy shows. Check out ArtBar, pay the membership fee (it goes to a good cause), and see what happening in the art world of downtown Albuquerque. - Winter Flack

n 2006 R.J. Mitte moved to Hollywood, California, with his family to support the foray of his sister, actress Lacianne Carriere, into print and commercial work. For fun, Mitte began training with Los Angeles talent manager Addison K. Witt in Sherman Oaks, Cal. And though many of the actors in the studio were working actors, Mitte was using acting as a means to build friendship with kids his own age while living in a new city. At the encouragement of Witt and talent agent Debra Manners of the Daniel Hoff Agency, Mitte began auditioning for commercials and TV shows like Grey's Anatomy. Mitte tried his hand at background roles and became a regular student on the popular Disney show Hanna Montana, later being romantically linked to the show's iconic star, Miley Cyrus. Mitte was cast as Walt White Jr., a series regular, and character with cerebral palsy on AMC Network's Breaking Bad and though Mitte has a mild case of the disorder, he had to do what all actors do: research the character and even relearn many of the challenges he had endured as a child, in order to convey a more pronounced version of CP. After the show's six year run, Mitte moved on to other shows and films, including a recurring role on the ABC Family drama series Switched at Birth portraying Campbell, a premed student paralyzed from a snowboarding accident who uses a wheelchair. COVER Y: J. AUGUST COVER STOR STORY AUGUST RICHARDS

16

June 2014

A

s a young child growing up in Bladensburg MD, all J. August Richards ever wanted to be was an actor. Even then, the only thing better then being an actor to the little boy was to be a superhero. Well, today he has accomplished both of those goals. Playing Deathlok on Marvel® Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has given Richards the chance to play a superhero, and a super-villain and a dad, in the first season of the show alone. We can only image what will happen in the upcoming second season. At the ripe old age of two, Richards' parents would put him up on stage everywhere they went to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The applause and recognition certainly fed into his drive to be an actor. Richards went from the Pledge of Allegiance, to a preforming arts high school, where he honed his talents and applied to only one university. The University of Southern California accepted him to their acting program, offering him scholarships and grants to help him get through school. His mother, hoping her son would pick a more practical course of study, encourage Richards to go into law. While at University Richards took a Law 101 course, his teacher would spend much of class going back and forth debating with Richards. This prompted his teacher make Richards an offer of going into law when he gave up on acting. Richards never took him up directly on the offer, but went on to play more then one role as an attorney. It probably wasn’t want his mother or teacher had in mind, but even they can’t argue with success. Angel, one of the roles where his character, Gunn, played an attorney for evil, Richards speaks fondly of the role. "Angel was a challenge, forcing

the characters to change almost daily, in turn forcing the actors to grow and stretch with them." Joss Whedon, the creator of Angel, was a huge influence in Richards' career. He speaks fondly of the days working with Whedon on Angel and now again working with him on S.H.I.E.L.D. “It’s great to meet my fans and have the parents remember me as Gunn, while the kids know me as Deathlok.” Angel may have ended over ten years ago, but the show is still alive and well in syndication, creating new fans everyday. Richards loves any role that challenges his ability to act. “I did a musical one time where I had to learn to tap dance in the six weeks of rehearsal and I did.” He has physical confidence in his body and believes if someone else does it, he can do it. He tries to do as many of his own stunts as he can. “I do them, because I enjoy it,” says Richards. When ask if he had any hidden talents, Richards says he considers himself to be a good dancer and musician. He has written and recorded songs that he has released on YouTube. He actually posted one of them, so he probably can't consider his musical side a hidden talent anymore. Being part of Marvel has been a real-life experience. “I got the part in a matter of two days. The minute I heard Joss was doing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I knew I wanted to be a part of it.” Deathlok is a character he has always loved. He is very different from Richards, but there is a deep connection there. “Working with Joss is just beyond a dream.” Deathlok takes two hours a day to get into costume and a half hour to get out. Richards will be in town for the Albuquerque Comic Expo. “I love Albuquerque, I would love to retire

there, says Richards. He fell in love with New Mexico when he was in college about fifteen years ago. They toured many high schools, doing a musical about chemistry. He rapped about the scientific theory, but claims not to remember a single word about it. Richards would like to leave a legacy behind that he was a great friend, a good relative, and the person that makes peoples day a little brighter. When Richards decided to be an actor at such a young age, neither he, nor his parents, knew what to expect from this endeavor. Iconic roles in shows such as Angel and MarvelŽ Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., to guest star roles in a number of exciting shows, to rocking out on YouTube, Richards' career has been full and ever-changing. He has no current plans for what comes next, but a quick look at his track record, it's sure to be another great role his fans can sink their teeth into..

BETWEEN THE PAGES: POOR PEOPLE’S FLOWERS By Winter Flack

I

rene Blea, New Mexico native who earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Colorado Boulder, has released her second novel in the Suzanna series set in 1920’s New Mexico, “Poor Peoples’ Flowers”. The novel picks up with Suzanna, now an adult, husband returning after a two year absent. Suzanna runs away from her life and leaves her children behind in hope of finding a better life. Violence and loneliness permeates life for women in Northern New Mexico, with few

options and even fewer ways to escape. The church was the only place to turn for help in those days, for anyone. The language is authentic and beautifully crafted to fit the times. The description breathes life into the New Mexican countryside. The characters are richly emotional with diverse issues of their own. A Humanities scholar, Blea takes an in-depth look at what drives to make the sometimes-horrible decisions they have to make, and the guilt that comes with life choices. This novel is more then just a look into the past, it’s a message of why society needs the changes that were brought and we need to fight to keep improving the conditions people live in. An emotionally raw look at abuse that until so recently was considered normal this profound novel will make you reevaluate your life and that of those around you..

BEHIND THE SCENES: ALBUQUERQUE STUDIOS

B

reaking Bad, The Avengers, The Lone Ranger and Fright Night - what do these movies have in common? They were shot in New Mexico and the studio responsible for the work, Albuquerque Studios. ABQ Studios had been part of some of the biggest blockbuster to film in the Land of Enchantment and New Mexico Entertainment magazine got the opportunity to sit down with Wayne Rauschenberger, Chief Operating Officer of ABQ Studios, to learn more about this amazing studio. How is Albuquerque Studios different from the other film studios in the state? Albuquerque Studios (ABQ) is the largest production facility in the state, with eight gigantic, world-class sound stages and more than 366,000 square feet of total production and support space. ABQ was purpose-built with the intention of accommodating the biggest and most sophisticated blockbuster feature films in mind. Together, all of the studio facilities in the state serve different segments of the market, and work closely together to offer a broad menu of options to film and television producers and thereby ensure that our experienced New Mexico crews have a steady stream of work to keep them busy. What are some of the productions you've worked on? ABQ has hosted 18 feature films and hundreds of hours of television drama production since opening its doors in 2007, including Marvel's The Avengers, The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington, Terminator: Salvation, Due Date with Robert Downey Jr. and Zack Galiafanakis and the full series run of Sony/AMC's multiple Emmy Award winning drama Breaking Bad.

What is your most memorable production so far? Oh, so many amazing memories to choose from, getting to know the amazing cast and crew over the years on Breaking Bad, or watching the construction of those incredible sets

from The Avengers. Those were some of the largest sets anybody has even seen and there aren't many other places in the entire world they could have built them. How important is it to have the film industry here in New Mexico? The film industry is incredibly important to the economy in New Mexico. Film and television production generates thousands of great jobs for New Mexico families, and industry publication Deadline.com recently reported that New Mexico is one of three states, along with Georgia and Louisiana, that have seen industry union membership grow by more than 800% since 2001. And the crew growth and skills development is only part of the story, there are also hundreds and hundreds of service and supply companies that have been founded in New Mexico over the last 10 years, all existing solely to provide services and material to the entertainment industry, not to mention expanded payrolls at hotels, caterers, lumber yards, and dozens of others businesses "up and down main street" that have been positively impacted by the film industry. Meanwhile, thousands of new visitors come to our state to see the beautiful vistas they see in True Grit and Lone Ranger or to see the locations from a beloved TV classic like Breaking Bad. As our state's economy lags behind our neighbors in emerging from the great recession, New Mexico needs the film industry now more than ever before. Can you share any upcoming projects you have coming up? We have a number of really exciting shows coming up that we’re hosting, including Fox's blockbuster new series Hieroglyph, set in ancient Egypt, a very cool trailer was just released online that everyone should look for. We also have the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul, which just moved in and started building their sets, they premiere in November on AMC and we hear the scripts are every bit as good as Breaking Bad was so we couldn't be more excited.

FOLLOW-UP: 2014 UNM WRITER’S CONFERENCE By Winter Flack

D

espite protest in downtown and Nob Hill, and a helicopter falling on UNMH causing the shut down the entire campus Saturday morning, the 2014 UNM Writer’s Conference kicked off right on time. Due to power issues the conference, that was scheduled to be at the sub on campus, was moved to the continuing education buildings. The conference open with Anne Hillerman, daughter of Tony Hillerman, as the keynote speaker. She spoke fondly of her father and his passion for writing and of her own. She shared some of her strategies for writing and share

excerpts from her new book Spider Woman’s Daughter. A panel discussion followed with agents and editors from New York answer crowd questions about the business of writing and publishing. Information flew from start to finish about how to write. Jason’s Deli followed the panel discussion with a catered lunch. The dining hall was lively with chatting and people browsing the shopping, book so f course on writing books. After lunch the classes began. The set up allowed you to choose from three option for the first hour-long workshop and then two choices for

the second and third hours of the workshop. It was also time for the editors and the agents to field pitches from the participant. There is nothing as nerve-racking as trying to sell a total stranger on your idea in 10 minutes. It went surprisingly well without anyone passing out or hyperventilating. The annual event is something that anyone interested in possibly publishing a piece of writing should attend the knowledge to be gained in the first half of the day alone is mind blowing. The classes are icing on the cake of how to start your new career.

EXTRAS: BACK ALLEY DRAFTHOUSE By Winter Flack

N

estled behind NYPD Pizza on Central Ave in the basement is Back Alley Draft House. You may have heard the name last year when the rains came and flooded the downtown area. There was a picture of the Draft House going around on Facebook with water rushing through the bar. If you missed out on hearing about it then, now is the time to try it. They are well stock with microbrews from around the country on tap and you can have hot food served up from NYPD Pizza, they share a kitchen. We walked in early on a Saturday evening. The place only had a handful of patrons but the sun was still up. Taking a seat at the bar we were greeted by Kendra the friendly bartender who helped us choose the beer best suited to each of our taste.

The Stone Stout is a great choice if like me you love the darker beers. Kendra told us about the place and that there would be an open MIC comedy night there on Mon about 6:30. We took our time drinking our beers. If you have ever had a strong stout you know you only get one and you should enjoy it. We returned on Mon to check out the open MIC night.
