A Church of Influence

Fall 2012

The Chicken Flap: Who Influences Who? SECRETARY-TREASURER MARCUS McCLAIN The Body of Christ, the Church, has always faced the challenge of “being in the world, but not of it” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). That is never truer than today. In a torrid season of change when just about “anything goes” we need to be reflective of some time-proven if not eternally expedient principles I am certain by now that from God’s Word. First, we need you are aware of the controversy to remember that what we do in that has occurred because Dan our physical body and with our Cathy, President and CEO of body needs to proceed only after ‘Chick-fil-A,’ spoke personally of his support for a Biblical marriage model. The national media, political pundits, and those self-appointed cultural commentators who believe that they are the voice for societal standards have weighed-in on the subject with their predictable talking points. It seems as of we ask permission from God (1 late that the Body of Christ, the Corinthians 6:19-20). Secondly, Church, is no longer surprised we need to be extremely careful at the behavior of the world but that we do not do anything that the world is certainly surprised, might cause someone to lose shocked, indignant, and even faith (1 Corinthians 8:9). Thirdoutraged if and when the Body ly, remember to be conscious of of Christ, the Church chooses to what and who we worship (Roexpress itself. mans 12:1-2). My mother told us Certainly, if we behave when we were kids growing up by their definition of tolerance in the ‘parsonage’ while trying to we would have to remain silent shape our character this simple or even worse: surrender to the little phrase. “Don’t go where world’s influence and begin to you wouldn’t take Jesus, don’t adopt their conversation, worsay anything that you wouldn’t ship, attitude and appearance. want Jesus to hear, and only Then, and only then would they do things Jesus would approve be ‘comfortable’ with us.

of.” I used to think that statement was too restrictive; I have lived to learn that what she was providing was solid counsel for maturation. Sharon and I live in the shadow of a tourist mecca. We can always pick out the tourists because they stand out. They look different; they talk different; they are obviously not from northern New Mexico. Well, similar to out-of-place tourists, the Word of God tells us that this is not our home, that we are citizens of heaven, aliens if you wish. Shouldn’t the Body of Christ, the Church, have a vocabulary that is different, a look that reflects righteousness, a behavior that models Jesus, and priorities that reverence our Heavenly Father? As the Body of Christ, the Church, contends with the immense changes and challenges of the 21st century—just like Dan Cathy did when he took a stand for righteousness—let us hold true and faithful to God’s Word, the love of His Son, and the Power of His Spirit. As always, God Bless You Big!

The Body of Christ, the Church, has always faced the challenge of “being in the world but not of it.”

Celebration Affirmation Partnership

YD

The New Mexico Ministry Network places a high priority on student ministry. We not only want to be a part of ministry to students, but ministry through students as well. Here in New Mexico we have a variety of churches, youth groups and Network youth events that are worth celebrating. Please join us across New Mexico as we celebrate our annual Youth Day on September 16th, 2012.

As you celebrate the ministry to youth and the youth in ministry, don’t forget to honor and affirm those who participate in these ministries. Many of those who serve give large amounts of time, money, and effort to make a difference. Based on the monetary reward, they obviously don’t do it for praise. Honoring them is obviously the right thing to do. Much of the youth ministry connection and many of the large events in New Mexico exist because of New Mexico Student Ministries. Please make Youth Day a day of partnership by receiving an offering in your church for New Mexico Student Ministries. Your financial partnership is what allows the New Mexico Ministry Network to continue to focus on developing ministry to and through the youth of our state.
